Creating Dr. Hauschka Products

A fusion of manual work and technology

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit our manufacturing facility. Entering this area has a strict protocol: freshly showered, no makeup, lab suit on one side of a bench, lab booties on the other. I remember pondering over two containers of Damask Rose Essential Oil knowing I was looking at 500,000 euros worth of this precious organic or biodynamic ingredient!

All employees pass through two airlock gates to enter the manufacturing area in which Rhythmic Conditioner ampoules are automatically filled in accordance with the hygiene regulations for pharmaceutical products. A constant downward air stream protects the valuable ampoules against dirt. These ampoules contain the medicinal plant extracts hand‑picked by our gardeners that characterise our skin care products.

The combination of manual work with precise technology, and natural rhythms with automated systems is typical behaviour at the WALA/Dr. Hauschka facility.

Dr. Rudolf Hauschka paved the way: he was not only a chemist but also an avid lover of nature. He developed a procedure for preserving medicinal plants without the use of alcohol.

Dr. Hauschka’s extraction procedure

With his rhythmitised, aqueous medicinal plant extracts, Rudolf Hauschka developed groundbreaking new pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. Even today, we still use his procedure to produce our extracts: we cut up freshly harvested plants, mix them with water for seven days, subject them to polarities of light and darkness, warmth and cold, rest and movement, press and filter them and sometimes add a little ash to the pressed residues. The extract now contains the essence and the powers of a medicinal plant – and can be preserved for many years.

Our company name reflects our unique manufacturing methods: WALA stands for Warm Ash and Light Ash.

A rhythmical manufacturing procedure is also used to create oil extracts and aqueous alcohol*‑based essences for our skin care products. During this procedure, the oil extracts are subjected to a specific warming stimulus. Dried plant components, such as rose buds from our partner project in Iran, are carefully transformed into oil at a temperature of 37°C, or in other words at human body temperature.

Depending on the recipe, we mix the medicinal plant extracts, essences, tinctures with high-quality waxes and oils to produce ready-to-use products. Out of principle, we do not use any chemical/synthetic fragrances, dyes or preservatives.

Our skin care products benefit from the expertise and stringent hygiene standards in relation to pharmaceutical manufacturing.

*Why do some of the Dr. Hauschka products contain alcohol?

Herbs and flowers are the core of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care preparations and many are extracted in a mixture of alcohol and water. We use a certified organic food-grade ethyl alcohol (ethanol) from wheat, it’s derived from a fermentation and distillation process and is gluten-free. Many plants are extracted in alcohol because it extracts the widest variety of plant constituents, or the plant’s botanical actives. Alcohol also serves as a natural emulsifier, preservative and carrier, helping botanical active ingredients penetrate the skin. Our alcohol is not drying to the skin when part of a carefully formulated Dr. Hauschka composition, you’ll know this when you use our Toners. Isopropyl alcohol is never used in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products.

Hot Weather Make-up Tips

Screen Shot 2016-01-26 at 2.43.38 PM

Always cleanse, tone and moisturise before applying makeup. You may wish to use a matte moisturiser such as Rose Day Cream Light or Melissa Day Cream if you have a Combination Oily T-Zone skin condition. Leave your moisturiser to absorb prior to makeup application.

For a long lasting makeup go for our International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar’s technique of…

1) Foundation 01 as a ‘primer’
2) Concealer, inner eye only, not outer eye where it’s likely to sit in fine lines
3) Translucent Powder Loose, applied with Powder Brush and tapped to remove excess before applying
4) Apply Foundation in your shade, applying with a foundation blender brush for that ‘air-brushed’ look. Yes, after powder, for long lasting makeup.
5) Translucent Powder again, applied with Powder Brush and tapped before applying, think less is more, you don’t want a caked look
6) Apply Bronzing Powder and Blusher
7) Set your makeup by misting Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner
8) If need be use Translucent Powder Compact during the day

HOT TIPS for a long lasting eye line

1) Moisten an angled brush with water
2) Pick up colour with your brush from just the one corner of the darkest shade in your Eyeshadow Palette
3) With your brush apply a line to the lower lash line from outer to inner, starting a little further out than the outer edge of your eye
4) You’ll need to pick up more colour with your brush, then apply to the upper lash line from the outer to the inner and beginning from the extended colour from your lower lash line so the two meet
5) Define your brows with the residual colour left on the brush, if it’s not too dark. Alternatively, choose one of the two lighter taupe colours in the Eyeshadow Palette
6) Set and keep lines soft with dry powder over the top

And if you prefer a more defined upper lash line…

1) Use Eyeshadow Palette for your eyeshadow, using a little of the darkest colour close to your lower lash line, with an angled brush is best for application.
2) Apply Kajal Eye Pencil Black close to the upper lash line, smudge and use darkest colour eyeshadow to set.
3) Apply Liquid Liner Black close to the upper lash line. This technique will make the application of a Liquid Liner much more forgiving.

Set your lipstick with Karim’s technique…

1) Apply Lipliner over the entire lip area, don’t do outlines
2) Apply Lipstick
3) ‘Kiss’ a tissue to remove excess
4) Apply Translucent Powder Loose with the powder puff
5) Apply Lipstick again
6) Apply a dab of Rose or Cherry Gloss mid bottom lip only

3 Reasons Why You Should Choose Natural & Organic Body Care

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Your face is a very small area, however, we often pay much more attention to using natural and organic products on our face, rather than our body, yet our body is a much larger area for absorption of conventional chemicals.

1. Your skin absorbs some of what you put on it

How much actually gets absorbed is up for debate, some say it is up to 60%, others say very little will make it to our bloodstream. Our skin is the largest organ of our body and it is semi-permeable and we do know medicinal patches work well enough using our skin as a medium.

We also ingest products through the mouth – as with lipsticks. Sprays may be inhaled.

Choosing certified natural and organic products will reduce your toxic chemical load significantly.

2. We are exposed to so many synthetic chemicals every day

Many women using conventional beauty products are being exposed to hundreds different synthetic and petro-chemicals every day. From shampoo, styling products and hair spray to deodorant, makeup, face and body products. It’s makes sense to do all we can to lower this exposure.

3. Natural, organic and biodynamic products work better

Your body can better use and metabolise natural substances. Nature makes things whole and complex, science separates and isolates. Whole substances contain everything they need to be effective, these are ingredients your skin understands.

So, how do you choose safe skin care?

Read ingredients, rather than labels.

Which Moisturiser is the best choice for you?

Screen Shot 2016-01-11 at 10.18.45 AM

All our Moisturisers, including Clarifying Day Oil, are highly concentrated, for example Rose Day Cream contains 30 organic or biodynamic Roses! They’re designed to be applied as follows:

  1. Warm around a large pea size amount of Moisturiser (3-4 drops of Clarifying Day Oil) between the palms of the hands to melt the oils and waxes.
  2. Apply using the palms of both hands to skin still moist from Toner which locks in hydration, aids absorption of botanical actives and ensures even and economical application.

Applying our homeopathic knowledge of ‘like treats like’ we recommend an oil for an oily skin. It may seem counter-intuitive however, harsh products just ‘strip’ the skin creating imbalance and the skin produces more oil to compensate whereas Clarifying Day Oil calms and relaxes the skin.

If you get pimples then definitely add Coverstick into your morning regime, to treat and conceal with just the right amount of tea tree and manuka for their anti-bacterial properties, and tapioca starch which absorbs. Amazing product!

If Foundation is too rich for your skin then mix a little Translucent Bronzing Tint with your Clarifying Day Oil.

Please noteClarifying Day Oil may also be used as an Oil ‘serum’ by mixing a drop or two with Rose Day Cream for additional protection against the environment and an anti-oxidant boost for any skin condition.
