Secrets of the Moors

Even in this day and age, moorlands have lost none of their magic or their mystery. They also contain a valuable medical raw material that provides protection and warmth.

Warmth, protection and a kind of barrier function

The peat extracts contained in Dr. Hauschka Moor Lavender Calming Body OilMoor Lavender Calming Bath Essence and WALA Solum Oil are gently warming and relaxing – a protective shell against external influences and a must for those prone to coldness and weather sensitivity. Combined with natural essential lavender oil, the product gives off a soft fragrance that paves the way for a good night’s sleep.

Moor (Peat) collection…

North of Bremen lies our destination – one of the largest continuous moorlands in the north-west of Germany. At the heart of the highmoor, we want to cut peat for later use in our medicines and skin care. Sound crazy? Perhaps it does initially. But peat has special properties that we have been harnessing for decades.

The Team from WALA/Dr. Hauschka Production are assisted in their efforts by a local farmer whose tractor we now follow along bumpy paths into the dense thicket, the mist still hanging heavy before our eyes. A lone cow eyes us suspiciously. Presumably it is a rare occurrence for so many people to troop by her remote meadow at the same time.

For centuries on end, the highmoor and its surrounding area had a cool, damp climate with high humidity and rainfall. Water accumulated in the soil, especially in the upper layer. Rather than decomposing, dead plant matter turned into peat owing to the lack of oxygen and the highly acidic nature of the constantly damp substrate – a process that bears witness to seclusion and stagnation. The moor grew constantly during this time, albeit very slowly – around one millimetre per year. Finally, it even extended above ground water level, hence the name ‘highmoor’.

The peat-cutting site looks rather unspectacular at first – a mud hole lined with young birches and pines, heather and mushrooms. Between the branches, spiderwebs glisten in the dull morning light. It is freezing cold. The men have to dig around two metres deep. In spite of the cold, there are beads of perspiration on their foreheads. “Good thing we had a hearty breakfast”, jokes Walter. As they work away, the men’s spades dig with a smacking sound into the ground, which is heavy and moist, greasy and black. A fine acidic smell wafts up from the site and the only sound is the laboured breathing of our colleagues working tirelessly with their implements. Otherwise muffled silence holds sway. The mist has swallowed up the world around us.

The farmer is already standing in the pit, some six feet deep. “The ground is starting to look lighter here”, he says, casting an expert eye on the work in progress. This is the layer of peat that we need. It is light brown and fibrous, containing pieces of conserved wood and plant parts. Six stainless steel barrels are lifted down from the tractor trailer. For the moment, they are still light, but once filled with peat, each weighs around 70 kilograms.

However, before we head for home, microbiologist Simon from WALA Basic Research, has another job to do: spade in hand, he jumps down into the pit and takes samples of the soil, which he then packs and labels with the utmost care. As he explains: “The bog has not only conserved many plant parts but also the pollen from the vegetation of the time. Based on this, we can determine the age of each of the layers of soil.” His initial estimation? “Between 3,000 and 5,000 years”, he says with a smile, “but when we have analysed it, we will have an even better idea what age the soil comes from and what vegetation turned into peat here over the millennia.”

Nadia from WALA’s Development of Medicines department views the lively scene with mixed feelings: “Normally, we don’t take so many people with us to cut peat.” Usually, it is just Walter and herself. After all, the peace and quiet of the moors and respect for nature are of great importance for WALA when extracting the valuable raw material.

This same peace and quiet is also central to the therapeutic use of moor extract – together with warmth, protection and a kind of barrier function. In order to produce the extract, WALA employees mix the peat together with purified water and treat it using the rhythmic light process. At sunrise and sunset, the mixture is taken to the light and stirred. After seven days, it is pressed and then further processed together with extracts of horse chestnut and field horsetail. This is done in different ways depending on whether the extract is to be used later on for preparations intended for internal or external application.

In this way, the lifeless peat from the cool, damp and secluded moorlands is transformed into a vibrant, medically effective substance. Among other things, it may help to strengthen liver functions, invigorate the body’s fluid processes, stimulate kidney activity. It also helps to relieve pains, to form a protective layer of warmth and to provide protection to those prone to weather sensitivity who are fixated by external stimuli.

Winter Skin Tips

Screen Shot 2016-04-06 at 4.58.42 PM

Dryness and dehydration are prime reasons for premature wrinkles so it’s imperative we protect our skin from these conditions, and during winter we need to be particularly vigilant, as outdoor weather is drying and indoor heating is dehydrating.

So what’s the solution to winter dryness and dehydration?

Screen Shot 2016-06-14 at 9.40.56 AM

Hydrating Mask is Dr. Hauschka’s ultimate winter skin fix, twice a week, cleanse early in the evening and apply the mask, also include eye contour area, and leave on to absorb all evening, removing with a moist, tepid cloth before bed. You’ll love how your skin feels in the morning!

TIP: If your skin is extremely dry/dehydrated you may also use Hydrating Mask as your ‘day moisturiser’ for a month long boost or until condition improves.

Hydrating Mask’s super rich blend of botanicals soothes, protects and revitalises while sealing in moisture, leaving skin feeling smooth and supple.

– Quince seed extract replenishes and helps dry skin to retain moisture

– Nourishing Almond, Avocado,Olive and Jojoba oils

– Rose Wax and organic Shea Butter soothe and protect

Rose Day Cream contains Shea Butter, Beeswax and precious Rose Wax to protect your skin from outside elements and indoor heating. Precious extracts of Rose Petals and Wild Rose Hips help to balance and harmonise your skin, softening Marsh Mallow, calming St. John’s wort and nourishing Avocado Oil for winter care. Rose is a warming ingredient.

Quince Day Cream contains Quince Seed extract which helps your skin to retain moisture, while Quince Wax is protective against the environment. Quince is a cooling ingredient, however, that’s fine for some parts of the country.

TIP: Winter Mask Blend Treatment:

Firming, Moisturising and Hydrating Mask Blend, for a dry and/or dehydrated skin that also needs firming…

  1. Cleanse early in the evening
  2. Apply a generous amount of Regenerating Serum including eye contour area as an ‘eye mask’ as well
  3. Then apply Hydrating Mask over Regenerating Serum, including eye contour area
  4. Leave to absorb all evening, removing with a warm, moist cloth just before bedtime

If your skin is dry, red, irritated, itchy or flaky in winter, choose Soothing Mask instead of Hydrating Mask to strengthen and restore a sensitive skin. Regenerating Serum is also formulated for a sensitive skin.

Calendula (Marigold)

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This page tells you more about Calendula (Marigold), where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

Calendula (Marigold) essence processing
Calendula (Marigold) essence processing

Raw material profile

Thought to originate from the Mediterranean, this annual plant germinates extremely reliably and has strong, resinous stems that grow up to 70 centimetres tall and are covered in felty hairs. It delights us with its bright yellow and orange flowers. What we regard as a single marigold flower is actually made up of over a hundred individual petals.

The inner substances of this medicinal plant include flavonoids, triterpene alcohols, essential oils and carotenoids, which are anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and calming, as well as soothing mucilages.

Screen Shot 2016-06-10 at 11.21.28 AM

Why is calendula used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

Calendula impress with their unbelievable vitality. As soon as they have formed a bud at the top of the first stem, further stems with buds grow from the leaf axils. More stems then grow from the leaf axils of these secondary stems and so on and so forth. The marigold’s love of repeat flowering is simply unquenchable. Cut off the flower heads and marigolds will respond by producing more buds.

The energy-packed marigold gives its regenerating and structuring powers to rough, cracked, irritated and sensitive skin, as well as skin prone to inflammation. It helps to repair unstable skin barriers, alleviates blemishes and soothes, for example, irritated skin as a result of exposure to the sun.

Screen Shot 2016-06-10 at 11.09.51 AM

Concealer ingredients

Concealer creates an even complexion in two ways. The product base uses avocado oil and shea butter to richly moisturise the skin. Marigold essence is formative and structuring. Carrot extract revitalises the skin. The Concealer with mineral pigments comes in three shades to gently conceal minor blemishes or any signs of tiredness around the eyes.

The marigold follows the course of the sun: its flowers open at daybreak and close again at sunset. This calendar-like movement in time with the sun led to the scientific name Calendula, from the Latin ‘calendar’ meaning the first of the month.

Bumblebees love to sleep in marigold flowers. If you take a look at marigolds in the early morning you will find sleepy insects inside.

Marigolds take control of their area: their roots secrete a substance that drives away tiny worms that feed on roots. Organic gardeners therefore like to plant marigolds as a form of natural pest control.

Origin, cultivation and processing

The organic marigolds used in Dr. Hauschka products are grown only a kilometre from WALA/Dr. Hauschka on the Sonnenhof Farm, our own Demeter farm. At summer harvest time, WALA employees meet Sonnenhof staff in the field at sunrise. They carefully pick every single flower head by hand in order to obtain a high-quality harvested product. The heads have to be twisted off the furry stems in such a way that no stem residue remains on their underside. No automated harvester could work with this level of precision.

The freshly harvested flower heads are then processed in three ways. Firstly, some of them are sent directly to Bad Waldsee and the WALA subsidiary SaluVet, some 100 kilometres away. There, the employees use a special rhythmic WALA procedure to obtain an essence from them. The extract is obtained using a cool mixture of water and alcohol. Secondly, some of the flower heads remain at the Sonnenhof and are carefully dried using warmed external air at temperatures constantly below 40°C. A rhythmic WALA procedure is also used to obtain an oil extract from the dried marigolds. This is mixed with warm oil at a temperature of 37°C (human body temperature). For the third production process, the Sonnenhof employees harvest the entire blossoming plants, including both the stems and the flower heads. WALA employees then create pressed juice from these. Unlike the plant extracts, the freshly pressed juice contains the full, undiluted character of the energy-packed plant. All substances found in the highly complex medicinal plant are contained in the substantial juice. This gives it its extraordinary effectiveness.

The different ways of processing marigold highlight its diverse properties. The aqueous and cooling essences give shape and structure. The cool, concentrated pressed juice provides assistance if the skin needs acute support. The oil extract supports the skin in its regenerative activities. All three extracts are used in different Dr. Hauschka Skin Care formulations.

Lose the night cream, your skin will thank you for it!

  • During the night your skin is metabolising and eliminating the day’s waste, that’s one of its many functions as the largest organ in your body.
  • The night time rhythm of the skin is one of a ‘breathing out’.
  • How do you know this is happening? Because skin disorders such as eczema, shingles, chicken pox or measles are much worse during the night. How often have you woken up in the morning to be greeted by a pimple?
  • There are no environmental factors that you need to protect your skin from while you’re asleep.
  • A night cream – which is usually a heavy, expensive, occlusive substance impedes your skin’s normal night time process.
  • Sleeping isn’t ageing!

Dr. Hauschka’s gentle and effective Soothing Cleansing Milk respects your skin’s pH and hydrolipid layer, along with hydrating treatment product Toner, supports our no night cream stance. Dr. Hauschka’s night treatment preparations embrace botanical essences held in a watery solution. These allow the skin to breathe freely and overcome any weaknesses and imbalances.

At first our ‘no night cream’ guiding principle seems unusual, however within one month (a skin cell cycle) you’ll need no more convincing!

New customers support your skin in the transition off the use of night cream with Renewing Night Conditioner, one ampoule a night for a month, then switch to Night Serum or Regenerating Serum.

Dr. Hauschka Deodorants

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 11.39.24 am

Sage Mint Deodorant and Rose Deodorant

The formulations of Dr. Hauschka Deodorant were optimised in 2015. They rely on the authentic nature and the full force of their natural ingredients. The effective formulas make it difficult for odour causing bacteria to grow. As a finely balanced composition, the two roll-ons protect and care for the skin, are well tolerated by the skin, and do not stain and do not contain pore constricting aluminium salts. An elegant, delicate fragrance of rose and herb and the fresh touch of sage and mint.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 10.30.20 am

Sage Mint Deodorant – herb fresh reliability

The interaction between the fresh mint fragrance and the herbal bouquet of sage provides long-lasting freshness, you can count on reliable fresh protection. The oil-free Dr. Hauschka Sage Mint Deodorant contains the essences of sage and witch hazel, two naturally effective, anti-microbial and astringent components. The vivacious fragrance of mint and the natural bouquet of sage harmonise to provide a long-lasting feeling of freshness. People who are physically active can trust the reliable, fresh protection offered by Sage Mint Deodorant. The composition of active botanical extracts and essential oils deodorises gently and hinders the growth of odour causing bacteria. Unpleasant odours are effectively prevented.

Tip: The herb fresh scent of Sage Mint Deodorant is ideal to partner with invigorating Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body WashLemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Milk and Quince Hydrating Body Milk.

Rose Deodorant – gentle protection

Creamy Dr. Hauschka Rose Deodorant works reliably and it’s gentle on your skin. Carefully coordinated components with mild deodorising and moisturising properties are used in this creamy formula. The moisturising oil in the rose formula imparts a sense of well-being, while the essence of lady’s mantle has an astringent effect and helps to regulate the process of perspiration. Rose water and essential rose oil add an elegant, delicate fragrance which lends a note of freshness and covers unpleasant scents. Rose harmonising properties and the roll-on is suitable for normal to sensitive skin.

Tip: Rose Deodorant harmonises perfectly with Rose Nurturing Body Cream, Rose Nurturing Body Oil and Rose Nurturing Body Wash which provides warmth and security.

Feel fresh – in every situation

New Dr. Hauschka deodorants provide protection and care for the skin. Whether during exercise or in stressful situations, the body starts to sweat under a wide variety of circumstances. Perspiration is a completely normal metabolic function, but it can be unpleasant in certain situations. This is why the new deodorants from Dr. Hauschka inhibit the growth of bacteria and cover odours naturally. However, they do not suppress the process of perspiration itself – which means they do not need to contain aluminium compounds.

Like a balm for the skin, Rose Deodorant contains moisturising jojoba oil, while Sage Mint Deodorant has a gel-like consistency and is oil-free. Both stay on the skin longer than short-acting deodorant sprays, imparting a lasting feeling of natural freshness.

How quickly and how much a person perspires depends on a number of factors – diet, clothing, and individual levels of activity and stress. Perspiration regulates the body’s temperature, eliminates metabolic wastes and combines with the skin’s acid mantle to form a barrier that protects us from harmful germs.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 10.37.33 am

What makes Dr. Hauschka Deodorants’ so effective in fighting the undesirable side-effects of perspiration?

The key lies in the newly developed formulas, with their authentic character and the full power of their naturally astringent, anti-microbial and moisturising ingredients. Both products are vegan and contain neither aluminium chlorohydrate nor other soluble aluminium compounds which constrict the sweat glands. The fundamentally different formulas of the two deodorants combine effective skin care and proven protection. Deodorising ingredients were composed and refined with moisturising extracts of medicinal plants and natural essential oils.

  • Tests have shown that both products are very well tolerated by the skin and offer long-lasting effectiveness
  • Do not sting when applied directly after shaving
  • Do not leave any traces on clothing

Please note: If you are going through transition from anti-perspirant use, that blocks your pores, to natural and organic Dr. Hauschka Deodorants, you may experience a couple of weeks detox.

Daily Mail > Possible link between anti-perspirants and breast cancer

Telegraph > Aluminium possible link to breast cancer

Editor’s note: When my partner’s Aunty was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer her oncologist advised “Switch to a natural deodorant such as Dr. Hauschka.” Of course her oncologist had no knowledge that I worked for Dr. Hauschka. I believe women should be made aware of comments such as this.

Why do we perspire?

Perspiring or sweating plays a vital role in maintaining normal health because it helps our bodies:

  • eliminate toxins
  • maintain the balance of salt levels
  • regulate the body temperature

On average we lose around 500mls to 1 litre of liquid a day through our skin. Generally, this evaporates very quickly.

We perspire

  • when we exert ourselves through exercise and physical activity
  • with the release of adrenaline due to fear or worry
  • when your environment is too warm

Interestingly, perspiration is almost odourless when it’s fresh, but when it stays on the skin it develops an odour. This smell is created by bacteria that breed in the warm, moist and nutrient-rich conditions created by perspiration.

What’s the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants?

Antiperspirants: Stop you from perspiring

Deodorants: Stop the bacteria from smelling, by killing the bacteria or neutralising the smell

The science behind deodorant

Scientists figured out that the best approach would be to prevent these bacteria from breeding, thereby having a deodorising action. The first commercial deodorant was launched in 1888. Unfortunately, in the quest for ever stronger and more effective deodorants, stronger and more powerful chemicals started to be used.

The science behind antiperspirants

Antiperspirants are based on ingredients such as aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium zirconium trichlorohydrate. These aluminium ions form a temporary blockage in the sweat ducts, stopping the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface.

Most antiperspirants contain ingredients which react with protein molecules present in perspiration and swell to form a gel-like substance. For these to be effective, their molecular size needs to be small enough to allow them to enter skin pores so that when they swell and turn to a gel, they effectively block the pores and prevent sweat from being secreted.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 11.35.47 am

What’s the alternative to chemical deodorants?

Zinc ricinoleate is the zinc salt of ricinoleic acid, extracted from the seeds of the castor oil plant. Zinc ricinoleate does not inhibit normal perspiration, and will not interfere with the natural flora of the skin. Instead, it ‘fixes’ the odours produced by bacterial decomposition in sweat so that they cannot be released into the atmosphere and cause the characteristic sweaty smell.

Chemicals in deodorants

Many familiar brands of deodorants contain triclosan. The chemicals in deodorants which prevent bacteria from growing have been linked to health problems ranging from skin irritation and contact dermatitis. Excessive use of spray deodorants have also been linked with more serious problems such as allergic reactions, asthma and breathing difficulties.

Chemicals in antiperspirants

Aluminium found in antiperspirants can cause inflammation, Aluminium chlorohydrate and Aluminium zirconium chlorohydrate are both used in chemical antiperspirants. These are both based on aluminium and can cause skin irritation.

Research suggests that aluminium-based compounds may be linked to elevated aluminium levels and health problems including breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Antiperspirants also have another downside – not only can they cause the problems mentioned above, but they also prevent the body from eliminating toxins through perspiration and reduce our ability to regulate body temperature.
