3) On Wednesday or Thursday night each week of the programme cleanse early in the evening and apply Cream Mask. Leave to absorb all evening, removing just before bedtime.

Why 28 days?
Your skin cell cycle is 28 days.

What you will need:
✓ Dr. Hauschka products (Cleansing, Toning, Moisturising) for your daily morning and evening rituals
Clarifying Steam Bath
Clarifying Clay Mask
✓ The Cream Mask most suited for your skin: Revitalising, Hydrating, Firming or Soothing
Renewing Night Conditioner, or if you have sensitive skin then Sensitive Care Conditioner. You will need 28 ampoules out of your 50 pack, so use the remaining ampoules for your next 28 Days Skin Fitness & Detox treatment.

Every Day – Morning

1) Drink warm water and lemon juice first thing upon waking in the morning and do this every morning. If it’s going to be easier then juice a pile of lemons, put the juice in ice blocks and freeze. Take one block out each night and place in a cup, so you’re ready for the morning. We need to make this habit quick and easy. Aids the body in a clear skin, flushing out toxins, jump starts the digestive tract, aids the liver in its cleansing processes and increases detoxification.

2) Use 5 drops of Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence in your basin cleansing water. We recommend Compress & Hydration + Press & Roll, at the basin, rather than cleansing in your morning shower.

Why do we promote ‘Compress & Hydrate’?
a) Warming your skin first softens your pores to ensure a much deeper cleanse
b) You will use your cleansing products much more economically
c) Complete by splashing or compressing with cool water after cleansing to activates a minute muscle beside the hair follicle, contraction helps to remove any last remaining dirt
d) Your skin will feel so much softer without the need for harsh exfoliation
e) Check out our Compress & Hydrate + Press & Roll video

We want you to get the best results!

3) Cleansing Cream – ‘press & roll’ technique.

4) Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner – close eyes and mist onto the skin, 3 pumps should do.

5) Day Care – all are highly concentrated so should always be warmed between the palms of the hands and applied to skin still moist from Toner. This ensures even and economical application.

Clarifying Day Oil – to balance and regulate an oily/blemished skin
Melissa Day Cream – for sensitive combination (oily t-zone, dry/normal cheeks) skin
Rose Day Cream Light – for normal or sensitive skin, usually recommended for a younger skin, up to around 35.
Rose Day Cream – rich and highly protective for normal, dry, sensitive, mature skin
Quince Day Cream – cooling, soothing and protective for normal skin or sensitive skin
Tinted Day Cream – tinted moisturiser for normal, dry, sensitive or mature skin
Revitalising Day Cream – for aiding sebaceous activity and guiding skin to a balanced state in a normal, dry, mature/pallid skin
Regenerating Serum & Regenerating Day Cream – specific support for firming a maturing skin

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Every Day – Evening

1) ‘Compress and Hydrate’ skin to soften the pores in readiness for cleansing. Use 5 drops of Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence in the water
2) Soothing Cleansing Milk
3) Apply Renewing Night Conditioner or Sensitive Care Conditioner ampoule.

This is your weekly routine, so repeat until you reach your 28th evening. By which time your skin will be deeply cleansed, nourished, more even toned, soft, radiant and healthy!

Great skin care is about using the highest quality natural and organic products. Eat fresh, nutritious food, drink 6-8 glasses of water daily, 8 hours sleep and put measures in place if you’re stressed – a state of relaxation, happiness and laughter is good for your skin. A 30 minute daily walk in the fresh air is good for your body, mind and soul, in nature if you can.

Mixing Clarifying Clay Mask with water in readiness for application

For those that need it here’s step by step instructions on how to do a Clarifying Steam BathClarifying Clay Mask and Cream Mask for Day 1 which will be repeated once a week during the programme, alternatively there’s full instructions in your product box:

1. Compress and hydrate your skin, cleanse with Soothing Cleansing Milk, remove with the warm, moist Dr. Hauschka Compress Cloth.
2. Place 1 heaped teaspoon of Clarifying Clay Mask in a small container in readiness.
3. Dilute two teaspoons of Clarifying Steam Bath with ½ litre (500ml) of steaming water in a large bowl. Lean over the bowl, covering the head with towel, and steam for 5-10 minutes. Follow with Clarifying Clay Mask application.

Please note: If you don’t wish to steam, then you may do this step with Clarifying Steam Bath and ‘Compress and Hydrate’ instead.

4. While your skin is still warm and moist mix 2 to 2 1/2 teaspoons of water (I use the Clarifying Steam Bath water) to the Clarifying Clay Mask in the small container. The consistency you want is spreadable, not too thin because it will drip off your face and not a paste.

5. Apply mask to your face and neck excluding eye contour area ideally with a mask brush. Apply from the centre of the face outwards. We always work in the direction of lymph flow. Allow to dry, it’s no longer active once dry.

Clarifying Clay Mask Tip: Watch where the clay mask dries first. That’s a good indication that particular area of your face is dehydrated. Are you missing that area with your Day Care? Do you need a richer Day Care product?

6. To remove Clarifying Clay Mask the Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Sponge makes the job quick and easy, but a non white face flannel will do, moistened with the now lukewarm facial steam water. Remove by moistening the mask first, then wiping.

7. Now apply your Cream Mask (Revitalising, Hydrating, Firming or Soothing) including the eye contour area, as an eye mask.

8. Leave on for at least 30 minutes to absorb. I leave mine on for most of the evening. Remove Cream Mask with a warm moist Compress Cloth before bedtime.

9. Apply the contents of a Renewing Night Conditioner Ampoule.

Please note: If you are new to Renewing Night Conditioner ampoules, flick the top to ensure all liquid is in the bottom of the ampoule, then using a towel break off the glass top. Pour 1/2 the contents into the palm of one hand, spread between the palms of the hands and quickly press into the skin and repeat with the balance of the liquid. Apply nothing further to your skin. It’s bedtime.

Note: We do not recommend any heat for a rosacea skin condition – use tepid water for a Compress & Hydrate instead.

Your skin will reward you for the extra effort, it will look radiant, refined and even toned, nourished and pampered. x

Do you really need an eye cream?

Homepage_SLIDESHOW_BeConfidentBeJoyous

Do you really need a specialised eye product?

  • The skin around the eyes is thinner and shows signs of ageing more quickly than other areas of the face
  • It’s also more delicate and vulnerable due to thin skin
  • More prone to allergic reactions
  • Subject to much movement e.g. squinting
  • Under the eyes may be prone to puffiness
  • The eye area doesn’t contain oil glands to keep the skin moist like the rest of your facial skin

So yes, a day time specialised eye product is highly recommended, with ingredients to protect against the environment, and to nourish, nurture, soothe and refresh.

Eye Revive refreshes, revitalises and soothes eyes that are tired, strained, puffy or red. A must for irritated screen eyes and post air travel.

Ingredient focus: Eyebright (Euphrasia) for its anti-irritant, astringent and soothing properties.

Please note:  The use of eye creams at night time is likely to result in puffy morning eyes. Use your oil free Night Serum or Regenerating Serum for the eye contour area at night.

Pomegranate

Pomegranates not only taste good, they have a range of health benefits. Anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties have been ascribed to them. They’re also resistant to drought and can store much moisture and vitality in their fruit.

An age-defying ingredient

  • We process the whole Pomegranate fruit, including the Peel for our products, obtaining a preparation that promotes regeneration of the skin.
  • Pomegranate Peel is an important ingredient because its extract inhibits an enzyme that is responsible for the breakdown of collagen in ageing skin.
  • At the same time, the extract activates an enzyme that’s involved in the production of collagen.
  • Pomegranate Seed Oil contained in the whole-fruit extract stimulates cell division in the keratinocytes, cells which produce the important skin-strengthening protein keratin.

Is your make-up working for your skin too?

Pomegranate extract is a key ingredient in Dr. Hauschka Foundation, so as a treatment Foundation you’re getting superb value. It’s both a sumptuous make-up and a product that’s also integral to your age-defying skin care programme.

Pomegranate is also to be found in Regenerating Neck and Décolleté Cream and our luxurious Regenerating Body Cream.

Tip: For a particularly dry mature skin, or in winter time, you may like to try Regenerating Neck and Décolleté Cream as your face cream as well as for neck and décolleté. It’s a richer formulation than Regenerating Day Cream, because there’s less sebaceous glands in the neck and décolleté area.

Dr. Hauschka Regenerating Range supports a maturing skin.

Applying our homeopathic knowledge of ‘like treats like’ we recommend an oil for an oily skin. It may seem counter-intuitive however, harsh products just ‘strip’ the skin creating imbalance and the skin produces more oil to compensate whereas Clarifying Day Oil calms and relaxes the skin.

If you get pimples then definitely add Coverstick into your morning regime, to treat and conceal with just the right amount of tea tree and manuka for their anti-bacterial properties, and tapioca starch which absorbs. Amazing product!

If Foundation is too rich for your skin then mix a little Translucent Bronzing Tint with your Clarifying Day Oil.

Please noteClarifying Day Oil may also be used as an Oil ‘serum’ by mixing a drop or two with Rose Day Cream for additional protection against the environment and an anti-oxidant boost for any skin condition.

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 1.23.55 pm

Tips

  1. After eye contour application, with the residual Regenerating Eye Cream that’s left on your ring fingers apply around the contour of your lips as boost against lip lines.
  2. Never use eye cream at night, it’s likely to result in puffy morning eyes. Do apply firming and oil-free Regenerating Serum or revitalising and oil-free Night Serum to the eye contour area at night after cleansing and toning.
  3. Use your once or twice weekly Cream Mask treatments around your eye contour area too, as an eye mask. A favourite Mask Blend of ours is to use Regenerating Serum then Hydrating Mask over the top of the Serum and leave to absorb for as long as possible. This is our super nourishing and plumping mask treatment blend. Remove with a warm, moist cloth prior to bedtime.
  4. Always treat your eyes and eye contour area with the utmost care. Remove eye make-up with Soothing Cleansing Milk on a dampened cotton wool pad and use gentle sweeping movements from the inside to the outside corner of your closed eye.
  5. Get regular eye check-ups, and wear your sunnies and a hat.

Mature Skin

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 12.08.39 pm

Beautiful skin isn’t always healthy – however healthy skin is always beautiful.

Mature Skin: Declining elasticity, wrinkles, an increasing tendency to dryness, possibly with constantly red cheek/nasal region (visible capillaries), thin skin, irregular pigmentation due to menopause, age spots, sun damage.

Natural & Organic Skin Care for Mature Skin
The key to beautiful mature skin is to age with healthy skin.

As we age, our skin needs specific care it may not have previously required. The process of cellular renewal slows, and skin naturally loses elasticity and resilience. Dr. Hauschka’s Regenerating Range supports productive skin renewal, refining skin and energising its regenerative processes for a firmer, smoother, radiant appearance.

  • Noticeably firms and tones
  • Supports the skin’s natural regenerative functions
  • Enhances skin elasticity
  • Balances moisture content, making skin feel smooth, soft, firm and supple
  • Antioxidant-rich red clover, acerola berries and raspberry seed oil protect against free radical damage and support the skin’s natural processes of renewal
  • Also formulated for sensitive skin

Your Essential Day Care

1) Cleanse with our Correct Cleansing and Hydrate and Compress. Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence in your basin water relaxes, Rose Nurturing Bath Essence is an exotic way to begin the day and Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence is energising. Cleansing Cream deep cleanses after the night time activity of the skin, removing impurities without stripping the skin of moisture and protection.

2) Close eyes and mist your skin with Facial Toner then apply 1 pump Regenerating Serum to firm a mature skin, helping to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while balancing moisture content.

Oil-free Regenerating Serum for day and night use gives ample moisture and a fresh, firm feel. With its formulation of moisture-regulating quince seed extract, isoflavone-rich (also referred to as phytoestrogens), regenerative red clover, vital bryophyllum and clover blossom honey. Regenerating Serum fortifies the skin’s natural functions, regulates moisture and noticeably refines and firms the skin. It also soothes reddened, sensitive skin. The result: a refined and firmer complexion.

3) Warm approximately a rice size amount of Regenerating Eye Cream between your two ring fingers and apply from inner to outer eye contour. A light formulation day time eye care product containing nine plant oils including precious borage seed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid and many unsaturated fatty acids. Together with moisture rich extract of quince seed, decongestive birch leaves, silica-rich field horsetail and isoflavone-rich red clover to firm and strengthen. Antioxidant protection from cherry fruit and sea buckthorn oil.

4) Moisturise with Regenerating Day Cream, a rich cream with a luxurious composition of vital bryophyllum (kalanchoe), isoflavone-rich and the great regenerator red clover, silica-rich field horsetail, vitamin-rich acerola (cherry) fruits and harmonising rose petals enhances the skin’s tone and elasticity and smoothes wrinkles and lines, leaving the skin looking radiant. Finest plant oils such as precious raspberry seed oil, avocado oil and shea butter provide rich protection all day long. The cream also soothes reddened and sensitive skin.

Screen Shot 2014-03-11 at 2.17.15 pm

Tip: Add a little Translucent Bronzing Tint and mix with your Regenerating Day Cream prior to application, this then becomes a tinted moisturiser. As we age our skin may become a little pallid, Translucent Bronzing Tint puts uplifting, youthful warm tones back into the skin.

Plant pic: highly regenerative and isoflavone-rich Red Clover

Regenerating Neck and Décolleté Cream is specifically formulated to replenish, fortify and firm skin for a smoother appearance. A readily absorbed cream that makes the skin feel firmer and refines its structure. Field horsetail with it high silica content and firming action supports the connective tissue of neck and décolleté. Extracts of marshmallow, birch and red clover form a luxurious composition to help the skin retain moisture with exotic argan oil that’s highly compatible with the skin and counteracts skin ageing. This cream is a rich formulation designed for the décolleté and neck which have less sebaceous glands.

Your Essential Night Care

1) Compress and Hydrate then apply Soothing Cleansing Milk which is a light, gentle, effective make-up and eye make-up remover plus evening cleansing product from the dirt and dust your skin picks up during the day.

2) Close eyes and mist Facial Toner directly onto your skin

3) Apply one pump of Regenerating Serum. Dr. Hauschka does not recommend moisturisers at night. Indeed in our experience the use of heavy, occlusive night creams exacerbate a dry skin. Sleeping is not ageing.

The delicate area around the eyes is much thinner than other parts of the body because it does not have subcutaneous fatty tissue, which makes it particularly sensitive and prone to wrinkles. Daily application of eye cream is a must plus use your Cream Mask on the eye contour area as an ‘eye mask’. Never use an eye cream at night, it’s likely to cause puffy eyes in the morning.

Eating your antioxidants

The three major antioxidant vitamins are beta-carotene (provitamin A), vitamin C, and vitamin E. You’ll find them in colourful fruits and vegetables, especially those with purple, blue, red, orange and yellow hues.

Beta-carotene and other carotenoids: apricots, asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, rock melon, carrots, corn, capsicum, kale, mangoes, turnip, cabbage, nectarines, peaches, pink grapefruit, pumpkin, squash, spinach, sweet potato, tangerines, tomatoes, and watermelon

Vitamin C: berries, cherries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, rock melon, cauliflower, grapefruit, honeydew, kale, kiwi, mango, nectarine, orange, papaya, snow peas, sweet potato, strawberries, tomatoes, and red, green or yellow capsicum

Vitamin E: broccoli, carrots, cherries, silver beet, mustard and turnip greens, mangoes, nuts, papaya, pumpkin, red capsicum, spinach and sunflower seeds

These foods are also rich in antioxidants:

Prunes, apples, raisins, plums, red grapes, alfalfa sprouts, onions, eggplant and beans.

Other antioxidants that can help keep you healthy include:

Zinc: oysters, red meat, poultry, beans, nuts, seafood, whole grains, fortified cereals and dairy products

Selenium : Brazil nuts, tuna, beef, poultry, fortified breads and other grain products

Cooking tip: To get the biggest benefits of antioxidants, eat these foods raw or lightly steamed. Don’t overcook or boil them.

BTW: I’ve just discovered I can eat Brussel sprouts, chopped finely and in a coleslaw with apple and carrot, who knew! I’ve never been able to stomach them cooked.

Plant Profile: Anthyllis

Screen Shot 2015-07-21 at 9.21.20 am

Scientific Name: Anthyllis vulneraria L.
Family: Pea family (Leguminosae/Fabaceae)
AKA: Woundwort, Kidney Vetch

Habitat
Anthyllis is a native of Southern Europe but is now found throughout the whole of Europe, Western Asia, North Africa and America.

Constituents
Small amounts of saponins and tannins, xanthophyll, organic pigments.

Description
From the distance you think you are looking at a sea of yellowish-orange flowerheads hovering over richly green pinnate leaf rosettes. A closer look reveals that the flowers are actually yellow and turn orange-brown as they fade. Anthyllis can reach a height of 15 to 35 cm (6 to 14 inches). The stems are frequently prostrate but also often raise themselves upwards presenting to the onlooker the dense clusters of yellow papillonaceous flowers which can be seen from April to June. A striking feature of the plant is that all parts are softly hairy. The chalk-loving plant is found on untilled fields and clover fields, by the wayside and on sunny slopes but never where the soil is overfertilized. A special feature of Anthyllis is the marked variability of its appearance depending on the site, an expression of its pronounced adaptability.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kometik

Uses
As the specific name vulneraria (Vulnus = wound) indicates, Anthyllis is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of wounds. It is also sometimes used in cough-relieving teas, in the treatment of frostbite and sore throat and for blood cleansing. It generally promotes the elimination processes of the body.

Interesting Facts
The scientific name of the plant is derived from its appearance and use: anthos = flower, ioulos = down and vulnus = wound together give a softly hairy flowering plant used for the treatment of wounds. The common name derives from the fact that the plant was also used for the treatment of kidney troubles.

Anthyllis probably only gained significance in Germany in the course of the 16th century and was valued in traditional medicine for the treatment of wounds.

The plant from another perspective
The vigorous upward and spreading growth of Anthyllis is the expression of its strong vegetative power. It is this power that strengthens the injured human organism. However, Anthyllis does not grow rampant but with refined culture. The power that fortifies the wound healing process is therefore not uncontrolled, but balanced and finely regulating. The plant’s polymorphism is also an expression of its regulating power.

In the same way as it adapts itself to different external circumstances, Anthyllis also helps different skin conditions to develop in the direction of a balanced, healthy skin. The balanced growth of the plant, which is at the same time an expression of the balance between building-up and breaking-down processes, is transferred to the skin, strengthening its resistance to destructive environmental influences and slowing down the ageing process. The balancing of the building-up and breaking-down processes in the stratum corneum (outermost layer of the skin) also refines the skin and makes it noticeably softer.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

The plant in our products
On account of its positive influence on the skin, Anthyllis is one of the key plants in Dr.Hauschka Skin Care and is contained in many of the face care products and make-up products. In summary, it provides a balanced combination of two important components of skin function:

A form-giving, firming and perfusion-promoting component and
a gland-strengthening component

MiNDFOOD Magazine – NEW Night Serum

Screen Shot 2015-07-07 at 1.33.55 pm

Tender is the Night

The nocturnal activity of the skin is crucial for protection, repair and regeneration, and one new product is embracing the ethos of letting things happen naturally.

Words by Liz Hancock, MiNDFOOD Magazine

In myths and folklore, night is the time when magic happens. Fairies come out to make mischief, the Sandman sprinkles enchanted dust into the eyes of sleepers to bring them good dreams and charmed underworlds materialise to tempt princesses to dance with strangers.

In the plant kingdom, florae utilise night-time to process nutrients absorbed and created during the day and begin the activity of new growth, according to Germany’s Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology.

Night is also a time of magic for the skin. In general, the body and mind process the day’s activity – tissues grow and repair, growth hormones are released, body and mind are energised, nutrients and waste are processed.

Equally, the skin repairs and energises itself as we slumber. Cell production speeds up, metabolic waste is shed, proteins heal damage and tissues are repaired. This is why night beauty products have become an increasing focus for the industry.

But one brand takes a truly unique approach to evening care. A founding principle of German natural beauty brand Dr. Hauschka is to leave the skin free at night, so it can rest and breathe easily in order to regenerate.

Because protection against the likes of sun, wind and pollution aren’t an issue while you sleep, the company has always left the skin unburdened by oils and moisturisers, with a two-step bedtime routine that involves gentle cleansing and then toning to stimulate the skin.

“During the day, your skin can use the protection and nourishment offered by your skincare products,” explains Annette Greco, head of galenic development at Dr. Hauschka. “At night, on the other hand, your skin needs something different: support for the natural processes rather than more substances.”

Now Dr. Hauschka is launching Night Serum, a light, oil-free product with new botanical ingredients to aid skin renewal while you sleep. Dr. Hauschka Night Serum contains rose apple blossom and fruit extracts, and is said to boost the skin’s natural activity, helping it to maintain its own moisture levels, leaving it smooth, radiant and fresh.

Rich in symbolism, the apple is association with Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility. Apples are high in vitamins A and C, which are regenerating and repairing on the skin. A sweet dream indeed.

Plant Portrait – Apple

Apple Blossom
Apple Blossom

Apple Synonyms: cultivated apple tree
Scientific name: Malus domestica Borkh.
Family: Rosaceae (rose family)

Description

At the height of spring, apple trees are exuberantly covered in delicate apple blossom. The effect of these flowers is particularly magnificent on naturally growing trees, which tower to heights of up to 15 metres and are topped with broad crowns. As the season wears on, the pollinated blooms lose their white or pink-tinged petals, which float to the ground, covering it like a layer of fresh snow. For a full harvest, fruit only needs to develop from five percent of the tree’s blossoms. The apple tree draws on all of life and is a key source of nectar for bees. From a botanical perspective, the apple is not a fruit but an accessory fruit; it grows from the receptacle that surrounds the ovary rather than from the ovary itself. The dried structures on the base of the apple, opposite the stem, are the remains of the flower. Like with all members of the rose family, these are five-petalled. When sliced in two, the apple also reveals a five-part core, created from the five carpels that bear the ovules. From a botanical perspective, the parchment-like core chambers or skins make up the fruit, or more accurately, the aggregate fruit.

Habitat

Central or Western Asia

Constituents

Rich in vitamins, especially provitamin A and vitamins B1, B2, B6, C and E; minerals such as potassium, iron, calcium and zinc; trace elements, fibre, antioxidants, polyphenols, flavonoids and organic acids, 75% of theses substances are found in or directly beneath the apple skin.

Screen Shot 2015-04-22 at 11.56.13 am

Uses

Polyphenols and flavonoids, both of which are found in abundance in apple skin, are anti-inflammatory, neutralise free radicals and protect against cell damage. Apples can also help prevent damage to nerve cells, lower cholesterol levels and regulate blood sugar levels. Laboratory tests have shown that oligosaccharide from apples is effective at killing cancer cells.

Interesting facts

The scientific name ‘malus’ is derived from the Greek ‘malon’, meaning apple, although the origins of this term are still unknown. The term ‘domestica’ (from the Latin ‘domesticus’ = home, indigenous) is added to the name of fruit trees cultivated in close proximity to homes. The apple is one of the oldest cultivated plants: not only have apples been found among the burial items in the tombs of pharaohs, but apple trees seem to have been grown in Kazakhstan since 10,000 B.C. The name of the country’s largest city, Almaty, even translates as ‘apple city’. Ancient manuscripts show that in the 8th century B.C., the Babylonians planted apple trees in the medicinal plant garden of King Marduk-apla-iddina (8th to 7th century B.C.) for medicinal purposes. The Romans brought the domesticated apple to Northern Europe from Asia via Greece. In all Eurasian cultures, the apple is a symbol of love, sexuality, fertility and the nourishing value of a mother’s milk, and is associated with certain deities. For the Babylonians, this was the planetary goddess Ishtar, who embodied Venus. For the Greeks it was Aphrodite and for the Teutons, Idun, the goddess of youth and immortality. Like the Greek nymphs known as the Hesperides, Idun guarded over golden apples in her garden. These provided eternal youth and immortality. Apple trees or apples on pictures of Mary, Joseph and Jesus represent Mary’s great fertility. However, eating an apple is also associated with the bringing of knowledge and change. Adam and Eve were evicted from the Garden of Eden after taking a bite from an apple from the tree of knowledge. In ancient portrayals of the Last Judgement, those who have been absolved of all sins hold an apple in their hand as a symbol of their re-acceptance into Paradise. When Mary hands Jesus an apple in ancient paintings, Christ takes on the sins of this world. In handing him the apple, Mary gives him the strength he needs to do this. On biting a poisoned apple, Snow White falls into a deep sleep. In both this fairy tale and Mother Hulda by the Brothers Grimm, where the apple tree calls “Oh, shake me, shake me, we apples are all ripe”, the apples represent the confrontation with female sexuality. In these cases, they are once again symbols of love. But to return to the Romans… These first started carefully growing apple trees in Central Europe, passing on the art of grafting. They knew that when trees were grown from the seeds of cultivated apple trees, their apples did not have the same properties as those of the mother tree. In scientific terms, apples are not homozygous. To reproduce the best varieties, the Romans therefore grafted cuttings to strong root systems. From around 100 B.C., they passed on the knowledge of this technique to their northern provinces where they planted up to 1,000 apple varieties. The present form of the cultivated apple tree is thought to have resulted from the natural crossbreeding between the Asian wild apple (Malus sieversii) and the Oriental apple (Malus orientalis). The apples from the first crossbreeds were still small and extremely bitter. Over thousands of years, 20,000 to 25,000 apple varieties have been created through crossbreeding and selection. The German names of these reflect their many different shapes and sizes; apples can be divided into the several different species: Klapperäpfel (schlotters), Gulderlinge (gulderlings), Rosenäpfel (Rosen apples), Pfundäpfel (rambours), Renetten (reinettes), Streiflinge (stripelings), Spitzäpfel (pointlings) and Plattäpfel (flat apples). Only around 30 varieties are found in today’s shops; the others are not considered profitable. In the 1960s, the EC even encouraged apple growers in Germany to fell their trees, offering 50 pfennig per tree (at the time, this equated to the purchase price of two and a half eggs or 100 g beef). Five million trees fell victim to the campaign, which aimed to promote the Golden Delicious as the standard apple. Fortunately, not everyone got on board with the campaign and apple-loving scientists known as pomologists have been able to record 2,000 different apple varieties that still exist in Germany and make an important contribution to the country’s biodiversity. Retaining the varieties will require constant attention and propagation as apple trees only live for about 100 years.

Apples in Dr. Hauschka skin care

Night Serum is the first Dr. Hauschka skin care product to use apples. The apple tree is a plant that remains with us all year round and is so much a part of everyday life that we can trust it with our eyes closed. As a cultivated plant, there have always been close ties between people and apples. In Night Serum, apple blossom invites the skin to open up and facilitates the nighttime renewal processes. As a fruit, the apple abounds with health and freshness – we desire its radiance and want to see this reflected in the mirror each morning. In formulating Night Serum, Dr. Hauschka selected Berner Rose Apple, a variety that reveals the full beauty and diversity of the fruit. The apples needed to be crunchy, juicy and as soft, rosy and full of vitality as your skin after a good night’s sleep. There also needed to be a balance between sweetness and acidity, as well as a protective yet delicate skin. We obtain the apples from German apple growers who use controlled organic farming methods. The freshly harvested blossoms and fruits are prepared using a proprietary production process – the apple blossoms as a rhythmitised extract and the fruit as apple water.

7 Ways to Revive a Dull Skin

Dr. Hauschka decorate cosmetics; Dr. Hauschka Dekorative Kosmetik

As we mature we lose colour from our complexion, resulting in a pallid/dull skin.

7 Ways to Revive a Dull Skin

  1. Fresh and nutritious food, fruit and vegetables contain pigments called carotenoids, which give carrots their orange colour, tomatoes their red colour etc. When we eat them, these pigments show in our skin, contributing to a glowing complexion. Adequate sleep, plenty of water (hydration is plumping as well), less coffee and alcohol, fresh air and exercise.
  2. Use Dr. Hauschka Revitalising Day Cream. This product is our lightest in texture yet our most activating. It supports sebaceous activity and key ingredient Anthyllis guides your skin to a healthy, radiant state.
  3. Definitely do not use night cream or eye cream at night, they impede overnight functions, and we want to support a healthy functioning, radiant skin with water based botanical extract products. Try Night Serum.
  4. Revitalising Mask treatment twice a week.
  5. Mix Translucent Bronzing Tint with your Revitalising Day Cream to bring warm tones into your skin.
  6. After your Foundation always, always put the colour back in! Use our matte Bronzing Powder (see tips below) and Rouge Powder, Blushing Rose to the ‘apples’ of the cheeks. Think of a child’s skin with naturally rosy cheeks.
  7. Use Eyeshadow Solo Ivory 09 with a Powder Brush to highlight cheekbones. Also a little at the cupid’s bow of your lips and under brow, these areas of highlighting bring radiance to your look.

To get that natural, sun-kissed look, apply bronzer with a light hand, using Powder Brush, building it up in sheer layers. A little goes a long way. Focus on the areas that the sun would naturally hit, including forehead, chin and jaw line, and the tops of cheeks, the tip of nose, using sweeping motions on top of your brow bone and circular motions on your cheeks and chin.

Firming Mask
For mature skin

Formulation: Rose, marsh mallow and pansy support the skin’s natural processes of renewal. Rose petal extract, rose wax, rose essential oil and avocado and almond oils support elasticity as they pamper and enrich the skin. Mango butter and beeswax enliven and replenish. Applying this mask supports your skin feeling stronger and smoother.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care 2014; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik 2014

The Only Ingredients Your Skin Needs

Screen Shot 2015-04-07 at 1.37.25 pm

The experts at Dr. Hauschka Skin Care understand your skin. We know both what it needs and doesn’t need for a healthy, radiant appearance.

What your skin needs

  • Since 1967, we have been crafting natural and organic skin care products and we have identified over one hundred highly potent plants that guide your skin to a balanced state.
  • We know exactly which botanicals and combinations of botanicals will best deliver the visible transformation you’re looking to see.
  • Every ingredient that goes into a Dr. Hauschka Skin Care product has an important job to do. Whether delivering essential moisture, encouraging resilience or improving efficacy, each ingredient is carefully selected for its particular effects and its interaction with the whole composition.
  • We only include the ingredients you need for long-lasting skin health and beauty and we only include fragrance from pure botanical essential oils to stimulate your senses and inspire feelings that uplift, relax or energise.

What Your Skin Doesn’t Need

  • Filler ingredients that serve no purpose to your skin
  • Harsh abrasives and “quick fixes” that disrupt your skin’s natural processes
  • Harsh, overly alkaline or lathering cleansers
  • Synthetic chemical ingredients

Screen Shot 2014-05-06 at 2.41.14 pm

The Importance Of Using Natural Beauty Products

Our skin is the largest organ in our body, it’s semi-permeable and therefore absorbs many product ingredients to the tiny blood vessels below the skin and then into the bloodstream.
On a daily basis, we apply face skin care, deodorant, body moisturiser, tanning products, sun protection, hair care including styling products, make-up and that’s just the morning routine. It’s not difficult to use up to 20 products daily!

  • Synthetic, man-made chemical products are essentially foreign bodies to the skin and, therefore, are over time stressors to the skin.
  • For our health and well-being, all products we place on the skin should be made from the highest quality natural, biodynamic and organic ingredients.
  • What you put on your skin affects both the health of your skin and your body.
  • Knowing this, you would want to use only the highest quality ingredients from nature.
  • The finest natural and organic ingredients support healthy and balanced skin function and a healthy skin doesn’t suffer from premature ageing either.

The ingredients you put on your skin, face and body, do matter

We know to feed our body nutritious, and wherever possible, organic food and it’s the same for your skin care, we’ve transformed nature’s ingredients to make natural and organic skin care convenient and easy to use – ingredients that your skin understands.

Dr. Hauschka Biodynamic Medicinal Plant Garden
Dr. Hauschka Biodynamic Medicinal Plant Garden

Unique in skin care philosophy

At Dr. Hauschka, we have a medicinal background since 1935 with anthroposophical homeopathic remedies and many of these guidelines and of course medicinal knowledge goes into crafting our skin care.

If you have an oily skin you may be tempted to use harsh cleansing products that ‘strip’ the skin, this just results in your skin producing more oil to compensate. Clarifying Day Oil is a lightweight, rapidly absorbed oil, that helps to calm, balance and regulate oily skin. Yes, oil for an oily skin!

We’re absolutely against the use of night creams. During the night your skin regenerates and eliminates, and heavy, occlusive night creams impede this natural process of the skin. Sleeping isn’t ageing. Creams should only be used to protect and nourish your skin during the day time. Use of eye cream at night usually causes puffy eyes in the morning. For night time we use botanical extracts in a watery solution. One month of no night cream and you will see the difference!

Also we understand your skin has differing cleansing needs at each end of the day, therefore we have different morning and evening cleansing products that are both effective and gentle to your skin. Our morning cleanser is a deep cleansing almond meal preparation due to the overnight elimination activity of your skin while cleansing in the evening is to clean the dirt and dust your skin picks up during the day and to remove make-up and eye make-up.

Regenerating Range to support a maturing skin

How do you know authentic natural and organic ingredients in the total formulation?

What percentage of the ingredients in natural cosmetics are organic? What are the minimum standards and the maximum values? Furthermore: how can you describe the high quality of a product other than through its material properties – its finely tuned composition, its more than biochemical effect?

Our entire skin care and make-up is certified with the BDIH seal for ‘certified natural cosmetics’ and/or the international quality seal for natural and organic cosmetics ‘NATRUE’. The NATRUE standard distinguishes between natural cosmetics, natural cosmetics with at least 70% organic ingredients and natural cosmetics with at least 95% organic ingredients. The term ‘natural skin care’ alone is neither legally protected nor defined on a binding basis. At NATRUE you can find the certifications given to each individual Dr. Hauschka product. Look for the NATRUE label for a guarantee that products are as natural as can be! This provides consumer transparency and it’s our guarantee our products are free from synthetic chemical fragrances, colours and preservatives, mineral oils, petrochemicals, parabens, silicones and PEG.

Our preference is for biodynamic/Demeter certified, organic or responsibly wild harvested ingredients. If an organic version of a raw material is not yet available on the global market, we initiate organic or biodynamic growing projects.

Screen Shot 2015-03-02 at 11.21.42 am

There is more to quality than good raw materials

Our recipes depend on the highest quality natural and organic raw materials – but also on the care with which they were grown and processed. By using Demeter farming, we gain medicinal plant extracts that are high in vitality to pass onto your skin. The ingredients come together to form complex compositions made up of more than just the sum of their components. Only when their ingredients interact and are supported by our rhythmic manufacturing procedure do our products take on their unique quality that enables them to stimulate the skin’s natural activity.

The result: a healthy, strengthened, balanced, regulated and radiant skin!

P.S. We have never tested on animals, we test on happy to help out human volunteers.

Which Moisturiser is right for you?

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 5.03.19 pmScreen Shot 2015-02-23 at 2.11.37 pm

IMPORTANT – How to use our Moisturisers
Our moisturisers are highly concentrated, they’re formulated specifically to be applied as follows:

1) Apply in the morning after Cleansing Cream and Toner
2) Place approximately a large pea size of Day Cream in the palm of your hand (or in the case of Clarifying Day Oil 2-3 drops)
3) Warm to melt the waxes and oils between the palms of both hands
4) Apply to skin that’s still moist from Toner, to ensure even and economical application, using the palms of both hands
5) Apply from centre of the face outwards in direction of lymph flow

In the evening after Cleansing Milk and Toning no moisturiser is needed as heavy, occlusive night creams disrupt the elimination and regeneration functions of the skin overnight.

3 Dos & Don’ts for a Youthful Make-up

Screen Shot 2015-04-13 at 3.54.22 pm

Tips from Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist

1) Don’t use black mascara on bottom lashes, too harsh and downward for the longer bottom lashes which adds years, you want your make-up to be uplifting

Do use softer colour mascara on your lower lashes

We recommend soft black Pearl Anthracite Volume Mascara, pretty Aubergine Volume Mascara, Blue or Brown Mascara for lower lashes. Try using a different colour from black for your Kajal Eye Pencil too. We love Aqua as a complementary colour for enhancing brown eyes, Brown for enhancing blue/green eyes or try Anthracite Kajal Eye Pencil for a softer black.

Screen Shot 2014-11-06 at 2.21.54 pm

2) Don’t use glittery eye shadow

Do use matte eye shadow

As we get older a matte eye shadow is much more flattering. Always apply light colours in the natural valley at the inner corner of the eye by your nose and always apply your crease colour from outwards to inwards, not the other way around. Perfect choice is Dr. Hauschka’s Eye Shadow Palette of matte colours.

Screen Shot 2014-11-12 at 4.02.42 pm

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 11.28.10 am

3) Don’t overdo powder

Do powder in a downwards direction as you don’t want to enhance your facial hair, and set by misting Toner, which also gives a more natural look to your make-up.

In general use less make-up as you get older. You don’t want powder sitting in creases. Apply foundation with a foundation blender brush for an ‘airbrushed’ finish and tap your powder brush to remove excess powder and apply downwards.

Tips:

Apply a little of your blusher colour to underneath the brow which gives an instant uplift to your look, taking off years.

To achieve a more translucent make-up, mix Foundation with your Dr. Hauschka Moisturiser.

3 Step Dr. Hauschka Beauty Ritual

Step 1
Clarifying Steam Bath opens your pores and relaxes your skin
Pour the contents of the small bottle into half a litre of hot water in a large bowl. Place a towel over your head and lean over the bowl, allowing the steam to rise onto your face for 5 to 10 minutes. Enjoy the ascending heat and feel how extracts of daisy, nasturtium and witch hazel stimulate the circulation in your skin. Blackheads are softened and impurities reduced.

Step 2
Clarifying Clay Mask cleans and deep cleanses
Using the small porcelain bowl, mix the entire contents of the Clarifying Clay Mask with one to two teaspoons of water. Apply the mask to your face, neck and décolleté and leave it for 5 minutes to take effect. Sit back and relax while medicinal clay and extracts of nasturtium and witch hazel bind with your skin’s metabolic products. Remove the mask with warm water, leaving your skin soothed and your complexion clear.

Tips:

1) Watch where your Clarifying Clay Mask dries first on your skin. This indicates an area which is dehydrated. Are you missing this area with your moisturiser? Do you need to include Hydrating Mask into your weekly regime for a moisture boost?

2) Before using it for the first time and after every subsequent use, wash the mask brush in lukewarm water and a little mild shampoo. Always lay it flat to dry in a sunny place. If you place it upwards to dry, moisture seeps down and may compromise the glue.

Step 3
Cream Masks tailored to your skin condition with medicinal plant extracts
Generously apply Cream Mask to your face (including eye contour area as an eye mask as well), neck and décolleté. After a minimum of 20 minutes, use a warm, damp cloth to remove the mask and complete your feel good ritual.

Steps 1, 2 & 3

The Formulation

USA-/EU-declaration

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Arachis Hypogaea (Peanut) Oil, Beeswax (Cera Alba), Althaea Officinalis Root Extract, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Hypericum Perforatum Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Sorbitan Olivate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Polyglyceryl-3 Polyricinoleate, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Linalool*, Limonene*, Citral*, Farnesol*, Benzyl Alcohol*, Eugenol*, Rosa Damascena Flower Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Zinc Sulfate, Lecithin, Rosa Damascena Flower Wax. * components from natural essential oils

Peanut Oil
Pharmaceutical grade peanut oil is used as an extracting medium for many plants. It has neutral qualities that do not interfere with the herb’s active constituents. It’s a very stable oil, requiring no additional antioxidants. Our peanut oil is steam treated and filtered to remove the proteins related to peanut allergies and has been tested and certified as aflatoxin-free.

Beeswax
This is a wax obtained from ecological beekeeping. For skin care the melted wax caps of the honeycomb cells are used to protect and care for the skin.

Althaea Officinalis Root Extract (Marsh Mallow)
In accordance with our beliefs we use the the root extract in this instance to address the epidermis or top layer of the skin. Even in antiquity the hairy leaves and the roots of the marsh mallow plant were valued for their high mucilage content. This forms a protective layer on broken or inflamed skin, soothing it, giving it moisture and making it soft and supple. The marsh mallow extracts in Dr.Hauschka Skin Care products are prepared using our own special rhythmic processes.

Rosa Damascena Flower Water or Hydrosol (Damask Rose)
Rose blossoms from certified organic cultivation, obtained during the production of rose essential oil by steam distillation. Rose water has a soothing, anti-inflammatory and harmonising action on the skin.

Hypericum Perforatum Flower/Leaf/Steam Extract (St. John’s wort)
St. John’s wort flowers during the longest days of the year, when it absorbs the sunlight intensively. It produces deep red dyes and essential oil. The red oily extract obtained from St. John’s wort has a soothing, regenerating and strengthening action on the skin. It soothes skin reddened by the sun. In cosmetic concentrations St. John’s wort oil does not make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)
Shea butter is obtained from the nuts of the karite tree, which is a native of Africa. This soft plant fat has many skin-nurturing properties. It helps the skin to preserve moisture. The shea butter used in Dr. Hauschka products is obtained from a special cultivation project in Burkina Faso.

Sorbitan Olivate
Organic olive oil and sorbitol, vegetable emulsifier, has been included in the formula. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that occurs naturally in fruit, it’s valued for its nurturing action and its characteristics as a hydrating substance.

Persea Gratissima Oil (Avocado)
The oil obtained from the pulp of the avocado by mechanical pressing has a slightly green hue and contains many essential fatty acids and vitamins. It supports the moisture balance of the skin and prevents it from dryness.

Polyglyceryl-3 Polyricinoleate
Vegetable glycerol and fatty acids from organic castor oil form a skin-friendly emulsifier.

Fragrance
We only use natural organic essential oils as perfume. In accordance with EU regulatory legislation we are required to detail some natural chemical constituents of essential oils that may be sensitisers. Usually these sensitise when in man made synthetic isolation form as opposed to a minute part of a complete natural essential oil. For instance natural Rose Essential Oil has 350-500 chemical constituents.
Every drop of Rose Essential Oil is the concentrated fragrance of countless hand-sorted rose blossoms. As part of our essential oil mixtures, this precious oil is contained in most Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products. Several cultivation projects have been initiated to provide organic or biodynamic rose oil. The fine, delicate rose essential oil is valued for its harmonising action.

Rosa Damascena Flower Extract (Damask Rose Flower)
The rose has been called the queen of flowers. Rose petal extracts are prepared using our unique processes. They unfold their harmonising properties in many Dr. Hauschka products.

Rosa Canina Fruit Extract (Rose Hip)
Dog rose (Rosa canina) is a vigorous relative of the hybrid tea rose, it bears red, vitamin-C rich fruits: the rosehips. Rosehip extract strengthens and cares for the skin. Dr. Hauschka uses extracts prepared using our own special rhythmic processes.

Copernicia Cerifera Wax (Carnauba)
This wax comes from the leaves of the carnauba palm native in Brazil (harvested in protected wild areas). Carnauba wax is one of the hardest waxes of natural origin. It gives the skin protection from external influences.

Zinc Sulfate
Zinc is known as an essential trace element to the human body. Zinc sulfate stabilises an emulsion. An emulsion is a mixture of water and oil.

Lecithin
Lecithins from soy beans (GM free) bind the oil and water components in creams as a natural emulsifier. They have a smoothing and moisturising action on the skin.

Rosa Damascena Flower Wax (Damask Rose Flower)
The precious wax obtained from rose petals rests gently on the skin and protects it from the environment and dryness.

St. John's wort (Hypericum)
St. John’s wort (Hypericum)

Why does Rose Day Cream contain St. John’s wort (hypericum)?

The iconic Rose Day Cream centres on the many facets of the rose. These are joined by St. John’s wort (hypericum perforatum), a vibrant, yellow summertime flower. The radiant petals, which stretch up towards the sun on straight stems, are abundant at the time of the summer solstice. This seems to be an expression of St. John’s wort’s sunny disposition. In Rose Day Cream, this ‘bringer of light’ supports those who are particularly thin-skinned and in need of protection, helping to protect more successfully against external influences.

Do you need a Serum or an Oil?

Or might you need both…

Regenerating Serum
Regenerating Serum

What does Regenerating Serum do?

Regenerating Serum is firming and toning to the skin, you can feel it working it’s magic right from the get go!

You may not be able to see it’s firming action in the mirror on a day to day basis however I remember starting Regenerating Serum (and partner product Regenerating Day Cream), then going off to my hairdresser appointment 8 weeks later and the first thing he said to me was “Have you had work done?”, “No, of course not, *rolled eyes*, but you must be noticing my Regenerating, YAY!”
I’ve had similar situations with girlfriends when I’ve suggested it’s time to go onto Regenerating, and seeing them several weeks later.

  • Quince seed and Bryophyllum extracts replenish, smoothing wrinkles and fine lines while supporting the skin’s ability to balance moisture content
  • Antioxidant-rich Red Clover firms and refines, encouraging the skin’s natural processes of renewal
  • Nutrient-rich Clover Blossom Honey protects
  • Key ingredient Red Clover, it’s the great regenerator – mow down a field of red clover and it will all have grown back in no time at all, this is the vitality impulse we want to pass onto your skin

Who’s it for?

Formulated to support a maturing skin, it’s also cooling and soothing for a skin that may be sensitive as well. We usually recommend for age 40+ however, we may recommend at an earlier age in some cases – premature wrinkles, sun damage.

How do you use it?

Use one pump after cleansing and toning in the morning, and prior to moisturising.
In the evening use one pump after cleansing and toning.

Clarifying Day Oil
Clarifying Day Oil

Fondly referred to as our ‘liquid gold’!
That glorious orange colour comes from Wild Carrot Extract, which provides your skin with a rich source of provitamin A, among other goodies.

What does Clarifying Day Oil do?

Because we also produce around 900 homeopathic remedies we incorporate many homeopathic guidelines into our skin care. Clarifying Day Oil embraces ‘like treats like’ – give an oily skin an oil! Now you may think that’s contrary to everything else you’ve ever heard. However, harsh, overly alkaline, lathering, exfoliating products just ‘strip’ an oily skin, giving that ‘squeaky clean’ feeling that means the pH has been disrupted, then your skin goes into overdrive to compensate, producing even more oil.  We recommend for any age that’s suffering from an oily skin.
Clarifying Day Oil allows an oily skin to regulate and relax.

That’s not the only use for Clarifying Day Oil though…
We also use it to support any skin condition at any age in a blend.

Let’s look at the ingredients:

  • Anthyllis regulates, strengthens and balances any and all skin conditions
  • Apricot Kernel, Sweet Almond, Sunflower, Jojoba Seed Oils and Cocoa Butter nourish the skin
  • Wild Carrot Root Extract is a rich source of provitamin A, one of the skin healing vitamins
  • St. John’s wort (Hypericum) and Calendula Extracts soothe and calm the skin
  • Wheat Germ Oil is gluten free and a rich source of vitamin E, another of the skin healing vitamins

Who’s it for?

Anyone with an oily/blemished skin, at any age
Anyone who wishes to include these ingredients in their skin regime

How do you use it?

For an oily/blemished skin: Use 2-3 drops of Clarifying Day Oil after cleansing and toning in the morning only.

For any other skin condition: Use in a blend, examples…

a) Mix a couple of drops of Clarifying Day Oil with Rose Day Cream prior to application to get your vitamins A and E from Clarifying Day Oil and vitamin C, the other skin healing vitamin, from Rose Day Cream’s Rose Hip Extract. Makes a potent anti-oxidant blend.

b) For a combination skin, Revitalising Day Cream with Clarifying Day Oil.

c) For a maturing skin Regenerating Day Cream mixed with Clarifying Day Oil.
