How to Enhance Your Eyes

Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar

Choosing the perfect eyeshadow

To really enhance your eyes, to make them look more alluring, bigger, brighter and the whites appear whiter, then choose eyeshadow colours that fall opposite to your iris colour on the colour wheel, as opposed to colours that are the same or similar colour as your eyes or colours that match your clothes.

Complementary colours

Colour wheel
Colour wheel

The opposite of blue is orange/golds/browns

The opposite of green is lilac/burgundy/pinks

The opposite of brown is aqua/blues/greens

Using complementary colours provides the most contrast between your iris colour and your shadow colour, therefore it’s this contrast that enhances your eyes.

Suggestions to enhance your iris colour

Blue Eyes

Eyeshadow Trio 04 sunstone, Eyeshadow 05 amber, Eye Definer 02 brown/05 taupe, Liquid Eyeliner 02 brown, Defining Mascara 02 brown, Volume Mascara 02 brown.

Green Eyes

Eyeshadow Trio 03 ametrine, Eyeshadow 03 rubellite, Eye Definer 06 plum/02 brown, Liquid Eyeliner 02 brown, Defining Mascara 02 brown, Volume Mascara 02 brown/03 plum.

Brown Eyes

Eyeshadow Trio 01 sapphire/02 jade, Eyeshadow 04 verdelite, 02 lapis lazuli, Eye Definer 01 black, 03 blue, 04 green, Liquid Eyeliner 01 black, Defining Mascara 01 black/03 blue, Volume Mascara 01 black.

Hazel Eyes are multiple colours so choose the same recommendations as for brown eyes using the colour wheel concept to contrast differing colour flecks in your eyes to highlight.

Aside from complementary colours, everyone needs a brown, taupe and neutral shades palette too, This also includes brown eyes, which can use browns, just need to stay away from muddy browns. Eye & Brow Palette with matte shades for both eyes and brows.

Application Tips

  1. Always apply eyeshadow from outer towards inner, not the other way around, for a professional and uplifting look to your eyeshadow application. When you apply from inner to outer you end up with colour dragging your eye downwards.
  2. When you’re applying your deepest colour to the crease, always keep your eyes open to ensure correct placement of the colour.

Why is compressing and hydrating prior to cleansing recommended?

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

We recommend Compress & Hydration prior to cleansing:

  1. Pour a little Dr. Hauschka Bath Essence into your basin.
  2. Disperse with hand hot water.
  3. Immerse your Compress Cloth, squeeze out excess water and press onto your skin, repeat twice.
  4. Remember to take a moment to deeply smell the aromatics from whichever Bath Essence you’re using.
  5. Cleanse.
  6. Always complete cleansing process with a cool compress or cold water splashes.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Why Compress & Hydrate?

  1. Aromatic benefits.
  2. Compress & Hydration softens pores to achieve a much deeper cleanse.
  3. It also ensures you’re using your cleansing products much more economically.
  4. When you complete your cleanse with a cold compress or splashes of cold water you activate the minute muscle that sits alongside the hair follicle which contracts, helping to remove any last remaining dirt. This simple technique leaves your skin feeling ever so soft without harsh exfoliation.
  5. A daily moment of ‘mindfulness’ during your morning and evening skin rituals.
  6. Your skin will reward you with the extra effort that pore-deep cleansing and truly clean skin brings.

The Power of Nature – Our Biodynamic Medicinal Herb Garden

When harvesting medicinal plants for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, there is no place we prefer to do than in our medicinal herb garden. This is located directly behind our oldest company building in Eckwälden, an agricultural town in southern Germany at the foot of the Swabian Jura Mountains. The local farmers sold a plot of land with heavy clay soil to our company founder Dr. Rudolf Hauschka back in the 1950s. When he started to use it to create a medicinal herb garden, the farmers shook their heads in disbelief. Some may even have had a quiet chuckle. This made them all the more astounded when they saw the oasis that had grown from the clay after several years of work.

The huge range of species grown in the garden is certainly unique. More than 150 different plant species flourish here, to be used in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and WALA Medicines products. The 4.5 hectare plot is continuously tended by six gardeners using biodynamic methods. Over time, these have made the soil fertile and crumbly. Compost created in the garden itself improves the soil’s structure and promotes the healthy growth of the plants. Their leaves, petals, fruits and even roots are manually harvested all year round. Even the seeds that develop into seedlings for 25,000 young plants in spring come from the garden. Our medicinal herb garden is as closed a cycle as possible and also provides a habitat for wild plants and animals. It really is a true oasis.

Interview with Bernhard Ehrmann – head of the Dr. Hauschka/WALA medicinal herb garden

Click play for the video interview with Bernhard Ehrmann, head of Dr. Hauschka/WALA medicinal herb garden.

What does quality mean to you in your everyday work in the Dr. Hauschka/WALA biodynamic medicinal herb garden?

When conducting our gardening work, we believe it is important to consciously monitor the processes and think in cycles. How do the soil, plants, animals and people work together in the garden? Our garden has an array of different habitats: shady, wooded areas and sunny spots, a stream, a pond, windy corners and damp areas. How can we prepare the garden in such a way that plants can become medicinal plants in it?

What turns a plant into a medicinal plant?

If you imagine a plant, your mind creates a picture of a balanced form with roots, a stem, leaves and petals. A medicinal plant differs from this ideal. For example, it may have either extremely long or very short roots. It may flower at an unusual time of year or grow the best in extreme climate conditions. In our garden, we allow medicinal plants to express their natural being as they grow.

WALA medicine; WALA Arzneimittel

That almost sounds like you regard the medicinal plants as equal, highly individual partners.

Yes, you could definitely see it that way. We are each even responsible for looking after particular medicinal plant species and take great care to meet their needs.

What does this plant care involve?

You could say that the people who tend the plants act as spokespeople for them. For example, our gardener Tine Janssen looks after all the wood sorrel. She monitors it very closely and makes sure that it can grow in the best place in the garden for it. Wood sorrel is a forest plant that we enable to grow under trees. Tine can tell if wood sorrel is not as healthy as it should be and needs some extra special care. As the optimum harvest time approaches, she monitors the wood sorrel daily – together with her colleagues in the plant laboratory who will later process it. Together, they choose the precise day on which to harvest the plants. Marigold petals for medicines can even only be picked by plant laboratory staff as these have very specific requirements with regard to the condition of the flowers: they must have already opened but not yet be in full bloom. Fortunately, the plant laboratory is located right next to our garden. The freshly harvested medicinal plants can therefore be taken straight there for processing.

screen-shot-2017-02-02-at-11-00-33-am

The WALA medicinal herb garden uses biodynamic cultivation methods. What makes these special?

Wherever possible, the biodynamic garden represents a closed cycle. We collect the seeds and use them to grow the next generation of plants. We regard the soil as a living organism. Plant waste from the garden and the production processes is put on our compost heaps. You could refer to these as the heart of the garden. Not only do they provide fertiliser for the beds but mature compost also helps to regulate and mediate the processes in the garden.

Plant ingredients with the most vitality, the best for your skin, grow from the very best soil.
Biodynamic gardens: Plant ingredients with the most vitality, the best quality for your skin, grow from the very best soil.

Compost regulates and mediates? What do you mean?

On the one hand quite simply that plant materials from all times of year come together on the compost heap. The diversity offered by the garden is brought together in a single place. This is like taking a long, deep breath in. We then give the compost plenty of time to mature. For two and a half years we leave the plant materials to decompose, to experience the qualities of the different seasons and form something new. This is an intensely harmonious process. After all, harmony means bringing together contrasting elements to form a uniform whole. We could speed up the process by frequently turning the compost. But that is not something we want to do.

screen-shot-2017-01-25-at-2-24-15-pm
Compost is the unifying heart of the garden. Plant material from all times of the year come together in the compost, decompose and mature.

Why is it so important to allow the compost to mature for so long?

Only with time and our compost management can the decomposition process take place in an orderly, harmonious manner. We support the process through the addition of medicinal herbs and by turning the compost just twice a year. As we turn the compost, we notice its smell, colour and consistency. At some point, we will see that it has fully matured. Mature compost is a joyful thing. It is the earth’s gold.

And this is when the long exhale begins?

Yes, exactly. We spread the compost on the beds at different times. Each plant species is given just the right amount of compost for its needs, under the watchful eye of its designated gardener. Once administered, the compost acts like an invigorating mediator. It transfers the harmony of its decomposition process to the plants. Plant growth becomes more regulated as though the compost teaches the plants to find the right balance. The plants become more resistant to pests and turn into powerful medicinal plants for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and WALA Medicines.

How do you know what’s really authentic natural and organic skin care?

screen-shot-2017-01-26-at-12-47-16-pm

Natural Organic Skin Care

The difference made transparent

What percentage of the ingredients in natural cosmetics are organic? What are the minimum standards and the maximum values?

Furthermore, how can you describe the high quality of a product other than through its material properties – its finely tuned composition, its more than biochemical effect?

We don’t think ‘natural enough’ is good enough for your skin. Only the very best, highest quality, natural and organic ingredients for long term results and healthy, radiant skin.

12932831_10154743187300961_7431959760736955626_n
from www.natrue.org

Our entire skin care and make-up range is certified with the international quality seal for natural and organic skin care and make-up – NATRUE.

The NATRUE standard distinguishes between:

  1. Natural skin care and make-up
  2. Natural skin care and make-up with at least 70% organic ingredients
  3. Natural skin care and make-up with at least 95% organic ingredients

This makes it interesting as the term ‘natural skin care and make-up’ alone is neither legally protected nor defined on a binding basis. At www.natrue.org, you can find the certifications given to the individual Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Make-up products for complete consumer transparency.

Go to Brand Directory Dr. Hauschka and click on the product image below. For example when you check Rose Day Cream you’ll see it’s certified to Level 3 – Natural skin care with at least 95% organic (and/or biodynamic) ingredients.

Please note: We have a preference for biodynamic ingredients, these are classed as ‘organic’ ingredients for certification.

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 10.56.32 AM

Look for the NATRUE label for your consumer guarantee that products are genuinely natural and organic. NATRUE certifies the entire product formula, not just one or two ingredients in that formula. Furthermore the entire formula is completely audited from supplier to finished product once every two years. Wherever available, we procure our ingredients from biodynamic or controlled organic farming. If an organic version of a raw material is not yet available on the global market, we initiate organic cultivation partnership projects.

You can count on our products being free from synthetic chemical fragrances, dyes and preservatives, mineral oils, parabens, silicones and PEGs.

We do not, or ever have, or outsourced, any testing on animals, we test on happy to help out human volunteers.

There is more to quality than good raw materials

Our formulas depend on the high quality of the natural raw materials – but also on the care with which they were grown and processed. By using biodynamic agriculture, we actually put more into the soil than we take out. We believe biodynamically grown plants are the highest in vitality and it’s this vitality we wish to transform for your skin.

In Dr.Hauschka skin care and make-up, the ingredients come together to form complex compositions made up of more than just the sum of their components. Only when their ingredients interact and are supported by our unique rhythmic manufacturing procedure do our products take on their very special quality that enables them to stimulate your skin’s natural activity.

However, Toner may also be used at any time during the day to hydrate and refresh your skin, even over make-up.

Toner TIPS

  • Keeping it cool – leave Toner in the fridge, even more refreshing in this heat.
  • We keep the limited edition 30ml size Facial Toner in our desk drawer at work.

Facial Toner gently stimulates your skin’s own regenerative powers and for a youthful, radiant complexion. Formulated with witch hazel and anthyllis (which guides all skin conditions to a balanced state), it activates the skin’s metabolism and leaves the skin feeling fresh. It also regulates and enhances the skin’s processes of moisturising and renewal.

Shea Butter

sheabutter-moor-lavender-calming-body-oil-topimage-1

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This blog tells you more about shea butter: where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

sheabutter-moor-lavender-calming-body-oil-profile-large

Raw material profile

The shea tree (Butyrospermum parkii) is extremely rare. It is natively found in the Savannah regions of the Sudan and the source region of the Niger and the upper Nile. Its natural habitat spans a restricted, approximated 300 km wide region from Mali through Burkino Faso to Ghana, Togo and Benin. It is only here, and nowhere else in the world, that this tree flourishes.

The gnarled shea tree grows to a height of 10 to 15 metres and can easily cope with arid conditions. The lactiferous tree with its leathery leaves does not flower until it is 20 years old but then does so all year round. It reaches maximum productive capacity at the age of 50, then remains fully productive for more than 100 years.

It is the green plum-shaped fruits, which become brown when they ripen, that make the shea tree of interest to humans. From a botanical perspective, these are berries with a diameter of up to four centimetres. With a fat content of over 50 percent, the kernels, which we know as shea nuts, are a sought-after source of nutritional and skin care fat in their African homeland. The sweet fruit purée is also eaten. The shea butter obtained from the shea nuts now has its followers all over the world. This is rich in fats with long-chain saturated and simple unsaturated fatty acids as well as structure-giving unsaponifiables. These give the lipid a melting, buttery character. The vitamin E and provitamin A contained prevent shea butter from becoming rancid.

In Germany, shea butter products were first imported at the end of the 19th century. The first large-scale practical tests of its use in skin care were performed between 1930 and 1952. The chemists were very enthusiastic about the high fat content of the fruits as well as about their long shelf life without preservatives. In the mid-1960s, shea butter disappeared from the world markets and was supplanted by the cocoa butter promoted by the industrial countries. In recent years, the valuable raw material has regained significance as a structure-giving natural substance in high-quality cosmetics.

Moor Lavender Calming Body Oil ingredients

screen-shot-2016-12-13-at-10-09-30-am

The ingredients in Moor Lavender Calming Body Oil have been carefully selected to envelop the skin with protective and fortifying effect. At the heart of the composition is a moor (peat) extract, produced using a proprietary rhythmic processing method. This helps people to protect themselves from within, withstand external influences and use their own strengths to form a new, protective layer. People who are sensitive to the weather and feel the cold easily regard this ability as a blessing. Olive oil additionally strengthens the skin’s barrier function. Shea butter soothes the skin and helps it retain moisture. Natural essential lavender oil unfurls a delicate fragrance, which offers the user a sense of calm and composure for the day and promotes a relaxing night’s sleep. The result: a calming body oil for those times when we yearn for a protective shell. As someone once put it so beautifully: power comes from tranquillity.

sheabutter-moor-lavender-calming-body-oil-why-large

Why is shea butter used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

Shea butter leaves the skin feeling pleasantly soft and helps it to retain moisture. Through their moisture-binding properties, the unsaponifiables in shea butter, in particular, make the skin feel soft and smooth. Shea butter is furthermore well tolerated and particularly ideal for dry and allergy-prone skin.

Origin, cultivation and processing

The shea butter for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care comes from Burkino Faso. In 2001, we provided the stimulus for an organically certified project in the region around Diarabakoko in the south-west of the country. 2,200 women from 17 villages are today involved in the project and collect the shea nuts from several protected, organically certified collection areas. The collectors in the project village of Diarabakoko independently organise themselves in a producer association. This is a women-only association, as is common and natural in Africa. Shea butter has always been a women’s thing and only they are authorised to harvest the nuts. The women named their association ‘IKEUFA’ (Faire bien et meilleur de Diarabakoko), which can be roughly translated as: Do good and better things in Diarabakoko. Their earnings from the shea nut sales enable them to pay for their children’s school fees – so that all of them, rather than just the lucky few can go to school. They are also able to pay for basic essentials like food and medicines.

After harvesting the nuts within the scope of the project, the women shell, dry and place them into interim storage in warehouses that are co-financed by WALA/Dr. Hauschka. The nearby organically certified company Agrifaso, with its head office in Bobo-Dioulasso, purchases the nuts and uses transporters to move them straight from the villages to its small processing unit. There, the shelled nuts are pressed under warm conditions and turned into shea butter. Agrifaso has 40 permanent employees, who ensure the continual production of the shea butter in consistently good quality. Finally, the raw shea butter is subjected to an organically certified refining process to reduce its highly characteristic natural odour.

In the hot Sahara, she butter has a life preserving function: for centuries the people there have used it to protect their skin from the drying wind.

In Africa, shea butter is used traditionally for skin care, for relief of rheumatism, muscle and joint pain, as well as for the prevention and treatment of stretch marks and baby care.

sheabutter-moor-lavender-calming-body-oil-slider-04

The harvesting of the fruits is based on an ancient ritual called ‘Begu’. Harvest time begins with a festival of sacrifice. The women use the fat from the first nuts collected to make a dish of brown beans, which is eaten by the village community during the festival.

sheabutter-moor-lavender-calming-body-oil-slider-05

The shea tree was given its name at the end of the 18th century by the Scottish explorer Mungo Park. He was presumably inspired by the African Bambara language in which ‘sii’ means sacred. In honour of Mungo Park the scientific name of the shea tree is Butyrospermum park (Latin: butyro = butter, spermum = seed).

Rose

rose-rose-nurturing-body-cream-topimage-1

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This blog tells you more about the Rose: where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

rose-rose-nurturing-body-cream-profile-large

Raw material profile

Over 20,000 varieties, innumerable colours from yellow, orange and white to pink and red, single and double flowers, bushes, climbing or erect growth. The range of rose (Rosa spp.) varieties is seemingly endless. Its wild bushy forms come from the Orient and are thought to have spread from Persia and Babylon via Egypt to Greece and Italy. Despite their differences, roses have one thing in common: the fivefold symmetry of their flowers. In other words, each flower head has five petals or a number of petals that is divisible by five. Each of these petals has its own form. Even the five green base leaves that cup the blossom petals from below differ from one another. Rose hips develop from the rose petals. As the fruits of the rose, their form is as diverse as that of the petals. A further typical characteristic of roses are their thorns, which are actually classed as prickles from a botanical perspective. Unlike thorns, which are created through the transformation of stems or leaves and grow as a fused part of the plant, prickles can be easily detached. The original rose varieties firmly embed themselves in the ground with their deep roots. Some hybrid tea roses lack this strong root system and are therefore grafted to the roots of a dog rose.

Roses can be used in all sorts of ways. Rose petals contain essential oil, tannins, nectar, lipids, wax and resin, among other things. With the aid of distillation, both rose water and essential rose oil can be obtained from the rose petals. Rose oil has been shown to contain more than 400 individual constituents. Due to its complexity, the natural scent of a rose cannot be 100% synthetically replicated. In aromatherapy, essential rose oil is used for its relaxant, de-stressing and mood-lifting properties. The wax extracted from the rose petals has a very fine and silky consistency. Rose hips contain high levels of vitamin C, plant acids and pectins, and are strengthening.

Ingredients in Rose Nurturing Body Cream

screen-shot-2016-12-12-at-2-30-56-pm

Four rose preparations take effect in Rose Nurturing Body Cream. Rose wax, essential rose oil and extracts of wild rose fruits and rose petals harmonise the skin. They form the heart of the balancing Body Cream, which offers warmth and serenity by enveloping the senses in a wondrous fragrance of roses based on a rich woodiness. The creamy yet rich formulation stimulates and fortifies the skin’s natural protective abilities. Shea butter from the organic wild collection project initiated by Dr. Hauschka in Burkina Faso joins forces with almond and jojoba oil to provide intensive skin care. The result: velvety soft skin.

rose-rose-nurturing-body-cream-why-large

Why is rose used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

The Rose, she’s full of contrasts and contradiction in the way she expresses herself. She’s strong yet also soft; resistant and thorny yet tender, smells sweet yet also bitter. She opens with fragrance yet contracts with her abundance of firming tannins.

Balancing, harmonising and strengthening for your skin, gentle and nurturing yet also exotic for your senses. The Rose is a symbol of the purest harmony. She has the strength to bring together her contrasting elements and create complete strength of expression.

Different preparations highlights different aspects of the rose: the essential oil sends us on a journey full of dreams, from which we gather strength. The warm oil extract with accentuates the rose’s soothing, rich and protective qualities, while aqueous preparations are dominated by her fortifying and generally harmonising abilities.

Origin, cultivation and processing

For Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, we use rose extracts that have been prepared in several different ways: essential rose oil, rose water, rose wax, oil extracts from dried rose petals, aqueous, rhythmitised extracts from fresh rose petals and extracts of wild rose fruits (rose hips).

We procure the essential rose oil from our independent partners in Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Iran and Turkey. These obtain the oil from Damask rose petals through the use of steam distillation. It takes about a hectare of roses to obtain a kilogram of the valuable oil, which is used in many Dr. Hauschka skin care products. The partners grow the roses using certified organic or Demeter cultivation methods. Our agricultural consultants regularly visit the countries and support them with their experience. Grants for the purchase of rose cuttings or the construction of distilleries help new partners who are just starting out in rose cultivation. This is in line with our commitment to high quality. As, whenever possible, we only use raw materials obtained from biodynamic or certified organic cultivation, we believe that it is very important to establish new, independent raw material partnerships. With the aid of our support and guaranteed purchase prices, new jobs and better living standards are created locally. In Afghanistan, for example, the cultivation of roses offers people an alternative to growing opium poppies.

screen-shot-2016-12-12-at-2-32-36-pm

Ethiopia

Essential rose oil in Demeter quality comes from a rose farm at an altitude of 2,900 metres. This is the first African rose oil from the south of the Sahara.
Further information about rose cultivation in Ethiopia

Afghanistan

Certified organic essential rose oil is produced by a community that has organised itself as a kind of corporate foundation. The project was initiated, and for many years supported, by the World Hunger Organisation with the aim of offering an alternative to the cultivation of opium poppies.
Further information about rose cultivation in Afghanistan

Iran

We obtain organic-quality essential rose oil and dried rose petals from a company in southern Iran which belongs to a foundation that demonstrates a high level of social and cultural commitment.
Further information about rose cultivation in Iran

Turkey

We obtain essential rose oil in organic and Demeter quality as well as rose water and rose wax from Turkey. We have worked with a cooperative in the south-west of the country for more than 20 years.

Bulgaria

We obtain organically certified essential rose oil from several small producers in the Rose Valley, which has a century-old tradition of rose oil production.

Germany

The rose hips from the dog rose (Rosa canina) come from various sources including our own Demeter farm, the Sonnenhof.

rose-rose-nurturing-body-cream-slider-01

The word rose is thought to come from the Indo-Germanic word word or vrad, the meaning of which is retained in Sanskrit as vrad = tender. Almost all of the world’s languages have a word for the rose; it is only absent in the language of the Inuits.

rose-rose-nurturing-body-cream-slider-02

The rose was already the symbol for love, beauty and grace at a very early stage and in Greece it also signified a great lust for life. This wondrous creation seemed to be so unearthly that in many cultures it was seen as a gift from the gods, particularly those of love and fertility.

rose-rose-nurturing-body-cream-slider-03

The rose is also the flower of wisdom and a clear mind. Sub rose dictum: the dictum under the rose was the stock phrase of secret societies such as the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons, which adopted the white rose as their symbol and hung it over their table as a stuccoed rose. A promise made under the rose was deemed to be completely confidential.

rose-rose-nurturing-body-cream-slider-04

The rose’s golden age as a healing plant came with the pharmacists’ rose (Rosa gallic) in the 13th century in Proving near Paris, where it arrived from Damascus. For almost 600 years Proving was the centre of medicinal rose cultivation. Medicines made from roses were sent from there to all over the world.

Elisabeth Sigmund, Co-Founder Dr. Hauschka

In memory of Elisabeth Sigmund

25th October 1914 – 20th December 2013

Elisabeth Sigmund, the co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of 20 December 2013 at the age of 99.

Elisabeth Sigmund was a key figure in the development of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care in the 1960s. She also developed the Dr. Hauschka Facial Treatment methods that Dr. Hauschka Estheticians are still taught and use in their work today.

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 9.47.31 AM
Elisabeth working in the laboratory at WALA/Dr. Hauschka

It was early on in life when Elisabeth Sigmund first took a passionate interest in cosmetics. After completing her school leaving exams and two semesters of a medical degree in Vienna, she trained to become a qualified esthetician.

Throughout her life, Elisabeth Sigmund had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and conducted extensive independent studies into cosmetically active medicinal plants. She consistently used her findings to develop her skin care products.

Elisabeth 1932
Elisabeth 1932

In 1948, she emigrated to Stockholm with her husband and received permission from the Swedish King to open a Cosmetics Institute. There, she began producing skin-normalising cosmetics on a larger scale for the institute itself and continued to develop the formulations for her products. It was during this time that she came up with the idea of oil-free night time skin care after seeing such positive effects on her clients.

Elisabeth around 1927 and 1945
Elisabeth around 1927 and 1945

In 1955, Elisabeth Sigmund had her first visit to WALA/Dr. Hauschka in Eckwälden after her husband had experienced such good results with WALA medicines. Also a Swedish student had spoken of WALA products with such fervour that Elisabeth had the company send her some of their anthroposophical homeopathic medicines, which she used to further develop her skin care products.

In 1962, Elisabeth Sigmund received a letter from Dr. Rudolf Hauschka asking her for ideas for a ‘very special’ approach to skin care, in line with the WALA principles.

Elisabeth Sigmund in her Cosmetic Studio 1954
Elisabeth Sigmund, Cosmetic Studio in Sweden 1954

Her detailed reply went on for pages and was met with an instant invitation to Eckwälden, the home of WALA/Dr. Hauschka. Dr. Rudolf Hauschka expressed his enthusiasm for Elisabeth Sigmund’s ideas by commenting “I have been in love you ever since receiving your letter…”.

Three weeks of intensive discussions led to a joint decision to develop a very special skin care range based on entirely new concepts. In the years that followed, the formulations for this new range were developed with WALA’s senior doctors and pharmacists.

All developments were firmly based on Elisabeth Sigmund’s ground-breaking guiding principle: the activation of the skin’s own healthy function.

The first natural and organic skin care range was launched in 1967.

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 10.14.41 AM

In 1969, Elisabeth Sigmund moved from Sweden to Germany. From then onwards, she shared her extensive knowledge with WALA in person and played a key role in the creation of many products. She remained a valued consultant for all matters relating to Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Dr. Hauschka treatments until shortly before her death and was always willing to listen to the ideas and concerns presented by the future generations.

Elisabeth at 90 being interviewed

We are deeply thankful to Elisabeth Sigmund for her decisive contribution to WALA/Dr. Hauschka’s development and commemorate her life’s work with the utmost respect and appreciation. Her curiosity, energy and knowledge will remain an example to us for all time.

Macadamia

Macadamia-TopImage

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This blog tells you more about the individual ingredient, Macadamia, where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

Dr. Hauschka Foundation

The excellent skin compatibility of the intensively nurturing Foundation is based on a combination of quality natural substances. The rapidly absorbed macadamia nut oil gives the skin a protective finish. It smoothes the skin making it easier for the pigments to be applied evenly. By contrast, coconut oil is absorbed slowly into the skin and leaves a lovely silky feel. Pomegranate provides moisture and vitality and encourages skin regeneration. Shea butter helps the skin retain moisture and is protective. The result is a nurtured, even and radiant complexion.

Macadamia-Profile-large

Raw material profile

It is considered the queen of nuts. In its subtropical home in Australia, the evergreen, sclerophyllous macadamia trees (Macadamia ternifolia) can reach heights of up to around 15 metres. Macadamia belongs to the original silver tree family (Proteaceae), the ancestors of which developed in the ancient continent of Gondwana (consisting of South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Arabia, Madagascar, New Guinea and India) in the Precambrian Age. Today, the tree is grown in Australia and New Zealand, on Hawaii, in Israel and in various countries in Africa and South America.

The appearance of the trees is strongly influenced by genetic variants and growing methods. For example, for months, long panicles of white or pinky-purplish flowers, which can vary massively in numbers, grow on the trees. There can be up to 500 blossoms on each panicle. They bloom from top to bottom. In Australia, these blossoms are pollinated not only by insects; birds and marsupials are among the more extraordinary pollinators of the macadamia tree. As a rule, after around six months only three to five percent of them mature into macadamia nuts, which, incidentally, are not actually nuts. They are what are known as stone fruit, as are walnuts, for example. Stone fruit are surrounded by an unwooded fruit flesh, while in nuts, the fruit flesh is completely wooded to form the shell. The extremely hard shell of the macadamia nut is enclosed by a green fruit flesh.

Macadamia nuts are known and sought-after as a delicious, healthy snack. Macadamia nut oil contains simple unsaturated fatty acids, which can reduce blood cholesterol levels when consumed. These include plenty of palmitoleic acid, a fatty acid which is normally found in animal fatty tissue and which has a strong antioxidative effect. B-group vitamins and vitamin E add to the value of macadamia nut oil for nutrition and also for skin care.Screen Shot 2016-08-09 at 9.38.24 AM

Macadamia-Origin-large

Origin, cultivation and processing

The fair-trade macadamia nuts for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products come from the ‘macadamiafans’ certified organic small farmer project in Kenya. The growth conditions for the macadamia tree are perfect at the high altitudes around Mount Kenya National Park, where the trees are cultivated by small farmers. Despite the optimum conditions, it still takes around 15 years before the trees can be fully harvested, but they then last for decades. The nuts primarily ripen in the months from March to June. Straight after the harvest, the farmers remove the green outer shell. The nuts prepared in this way are then transported to decentralised manufacturing facilities for further processing. These largely employ the farmers’ family members. After a gentle drying process, the factory employees use specially developed manual nutcrackers to delicately remove the valuable cores from the protective shell, carefully sort them and then package them in a vacuum to prevent oxidation. It is a complicated process involving a lot of manual work, several stages of drying and short storage times, but it is worth it as a high percentage of the macadamia nuts remain undamaged.

With all this work, it is no wonder that macadamia nuts are the most expensive nuts in the world. Where it was previously often just the middle men making a profit, the macadamiafans project founded in 2009 gives the farmers and their families direct access to the export market. The project has its own traceability system where all steps are recorded digitally, from training and certification of the farmers, through purchasing, payment and processing to the finished product. Extensive training and a conversion to certified organic farming have given the farmers the opportunity to significantly increase their income. All of the profits from macadamiafans currently go into expanding the activities in Kenya so that more farmers can be offered a fair return on their products.

WALA buys the shelled nuts from macadamiafans and gets them pressed into oil in Germany. This requires real finesse from the people working at the oil mill. Macadamia nuts need the right amount of gentle warmth to separate the oil and oil cakes from one another. The valuable oil cakes go to organic bakeries in the area.

Macadamia-Slider-04

macadamiafans cooperates with the WELT:KLASSE foundation. As part of supervised school projects, German schoolchildren sell the Kenyan macadamia nuts in Germany and can visit the farmers in Kenya.

Macadamia-Slider-02

The flowers, ripening and ripe fruit can be found on the macadamia tree at the same time, which is a typical feature of tropical trees.

Macadamia-Slider-03

The Aborigines value wild macadamia nuts as a source of protein and fat. One legend suggests that a cockatoo gave the nuts to the tribal boy Baphal when he was stuck in the mountain with an injured foot, thus saving his life. Since then, the nuts have been called Baphal nuts in the Aborigine language.

Macadamia-Slider-01

Originally, macadamia nuts only grew in Australia. It is the only edible Australian plant which is farmed commercially.

Why is sandalwood used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

A tree’s fragrance normally comes from its blossom. The fact that the sandalwood tree concentrates its essential oil in its wood impacts on its effectiveness. Unlike airy floral fragrances, the fragrance of sandalwood conveys a sense of stability. The floral quality concentrated in the solid wood demands durability. Instead of a strongly emanating scent, sandalwood emits a subtle fragrance that warms the soul, touches the heart and leaves you feeling grounded. Only once applied to the skin does it develop into a delicately effective force, which gently envelops and offers a sense of calmness. Sandalwood water from the distillation process helps tone the skin and give it vitality.

Ingredients in Lavender Sandalwood Calming Body Cream

Sandalwood oil offers a sense of calmness and supports the soothing effect of the lavender. Balancing wood sorrel extract has a harmonising effect, while premium olive, macadamia nut, apricot kernel and avocado oils strengthen the skin’s barrier function. The skin feels silky-soft and smooth following application and has its natural balance restored thanks to the Body Cream’s soothing effect.

Sandalwood-Why-large

Raw material profile

Most people know sandalwood from India. Anyone who has travelled to this colourful country will ever forget its characteristic scent. It permeates rooms and lingers on clothing. The fragrance comes from certain sandal trees, of which there are about 25 species worldwide. These are natively found in the Indian subcontinent, Australia, from Hawaii to New Guinea and in the Philippines, and have certain things in common: their wood contains essential oil and they’re classed as semi-parasitic. The trees obtain some of their nourishment from the root systems of neighbouring plants, but can also survive alone, without a host plant.

Sandalwood essential oil is obtained from sandal trees from India and Australia. These grow to heights of between one and ten metres, are evergreen, flower throughout the year and are not fussy about where they grow – whether in fertile valleys or on dry mountainsides, the sandal tree thrives anywhere. Indeed, the scent of its wood seems to be more intense the dryer and poorer the soil it grows in. Its leaves are large and leathery, somewhat like laurel leaves. Its unscented flowers usually have four petals, which look yellow on opening but gradually take on a deep red colour. They grow in clusters at the tips of the branches.

The essential sandalwood oil obtained from the reddish heartwood contains a number of substances including the sesquiterpene alcohol santalol and santalen, which is classed as a sesquiterpene. It is antiseptic, toning and stimulates the lymph flow. The essential oil plays an important role in the perfume industry.

Sandalwood-Slider-01

In aromatherapy, the fragrance of sandalwood is used to help combat excessive mental strain. The harmonising fragrance is soothing, relieves tension and helps people find their inner peace.

Sandalwood-Slider-02

To harvest the heartwood for steam distillation, the felled tree trunks used be left lying on the ground for nature to take its course. White termites would attack the bark and the soft sapwood, until a few months later only the almost cleanly stripped hard heartwood remained.

Sandalwood-Slider-03

Essential sandalwood oil is antispasmodic and antibacterial. It can be used to help treat minor urinary tract infections. Inhalations are said to help combat persistent coughs.

Sandalwood-Slider-04

As sandalwood is so popular that natural stocks have been strongly decimated, especially in India, each year the Indian government issues felling licences that are subject to strict conditions.

Sandalwood-Profile-large

Origin, cultivation and processing

The essential sandalwood oil used in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products is obtained from sustainable, certified organic forestry in Australia. Tree nurseries in the tropical regions in the north of the country propagate the Australian sandalwood trees (Santalum spicatum) and their host plants, both of which are cultivated together. The trees are therefore given the necessary conditions for optimal growth. Every year, new, species-rich plantations are created so that sandal trees of different ages are simultaneously available. The sought-after essential oil is obtained by felling trees with an age of 15 to 17 years. Machines strip the trees to leave only the hard heartwood. After this is chipped and ground, the essential oil is obtained from it using steam distillation. It takes about 20 kilograms of sandalwood to produce one kilogram of essential oil. The distillation process is exceptionally lengthy: the sandalwood is distilled at just over 100°C for up to 100 hours.

Lavender Sandalwood Calming Body Wash with the gentle aroma of lavender, discreetly accompanied by the warm fragrance of Australian sandalwood. Quince seed extract helps your skin to retain moisture, plant surfactants respect skin’s pH and effectively cleanse and plant oils leave your skin feeling smooth.

Lavender Sandalwood Calming Body Cream for soft, nourished and protected skin. The comforting aroma of lavender is complemented by warm notes of Australian sandalwood. Extracts of lemon balm (melissa) and wood sorrel balance and renew, while macadamia nut, apricot kernel and avocado oils nourish and fortify the skin’s protective barrier.

Regenerating Intensive Treatment has a base of sandalwood water from the steam distillation process, which helps to give the skin tone and vitality. Rhythmitised dilutions of madonna lily, gingko and hawthorn work with gemstones blue tourmaline, amber and gold to support a maturing skin’s natural processes of renewal.

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This page tells you more about Calendula (Marigold), where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

Calendula (Marigold) essence processing
Calendula (Marigold) essence processing

Raw material profile

Thought to originate from the Mediterranean, this annual plant germinates extremely reliably and has strong, resinous stems that grow up to 70 centimetres tall and are covered in felty hairs. It delights us with its bright yellow and orange flowers. What we regard as a single marigold flower is actually made up of over a hundred individual petals.

The inner substances of this medicinal plant include flavonoids, triterpene alcohols, essential oils and carotenoids, which are anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and calming, as well as soothing mucilages.

Screen Shot 2016-06-10 at 11.21.28 AM

Calendula-Why-large

Why is calendula used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

Calendula impress with their unbelievable vitality. As soon as they have formed a bud at the top of the first stem, further stems with buds grow from the leaf axils. More stems then grow from the leaf axils of these secondary stems and so on and so forth. The marigold’s love of repeat flowering is simply unquenchable. Cut off the flower heads and marigolds will respond by producing more buds.

The energy-packed marigold gives its regenerating and structuring powers to rough, cracked, irritated and sensitive skin, as well as skin prone to inflammation. It helps to repair unstable skin barriers, alleviates blemishes and soothes, for example, irritated skin as a result of exposure to the sun.

Screen Shot 2016-06-10 at 11.09.51 AM

Concealer ingredients

Concealer creates an even complexion in two ways. The product base uses avocado oil and shea butter to richly moisturise the skin. Marigold essence is formative and structuring. Carrot extract revitalises the skin. The Concealer with mineral pigments comes in three shades to gently conceal minor blemishes or any signs of tiredness around the eyes.

Calendula-Slider-01

The marigold follows the course of the sun: its flowers open at daybreak and close again at sunset. This calendar-like movement in time with the sun led to the scientific name Calendula, from the Latin ‘calendar’ meaning the first of the month.

Calendula-Slider-04

Bumblebees love to sleep in marigold flowers. If you take a look at marigolds in the early morning you will find sleepy insects inside.

Calendula-Slider-03

Marigolds take control of their area: their roots secrete a substance that drives away tiny worms that feed on roots. Organic gardeners therefore like to plant marigolds as a form of natural pest control.

Calendula-Origin-large

Origin, cultivation and processing

The organic marigolds used in Dr. Hauschka products are grown only a kilometre from WALA/Dr. Hauschka on the Sonnenhof Farm, our own Demeter farm. At summer harvest time, WALA employees meet Sonnenhof staff in the field at sunrise. They carefully pick every single flower head by hand in order to obtain a high-quality harvested product. The heads have to be twisted off the furry stems in such a way that no stem residue remains on their underside. No automated harvester could work with this level of precision.

The freshly harvested flower heads are then processed in three ways. Firstly, some of them are sent directly to Bad Waldsee and the WALA subsidiary SaluVet, some 100 kilometres away. There, the employees use a special rhythmic WALA procedure to obtain an essence from them. The extract is obtained using a cool mixture of water and alcohol. Secondly, some of the flower heads remain at the Sonnenhof and are carefully dried using warmed external air at temperatures constantly below 40°C. A rhythmic WALA procedure is also used to obtain an oil extract from the dried marigolds. This is mixed with warm oil at a temperature of 37°C (human body temperature). For the third production process, the Sonnenhof employees harvest the entire blossoming plants, including both the stems and the flower heads. WALA employees then create pressed juice from these. Unlike the plant extracts, the freshly pressed juice contains the full, undiluted character of the energy-packed plant. All substances found in the highly complex medicinal plant are contained in the substantial juice. This gives it its extraordinary effectiveness.

The different ways of processing marigold highlight its diverse properties. The aqueous and cooling essences give shape and structure. The cool, concentrated pressed juice provides assistance if the skin needs acute support. The oil extract supports the skin in its regenerative activities. All three extracts are used in different Dr. Hauschka Skin Care formulations.

Lose the night cream, your skin will thank you for it!

  • During the night your skin is metabolising and eliminating the day’s waste, that’s one of its many functions as the largest organ in your body.
  • The night time rhythm of the skin is one of a ‘breathing out’.
  • How do you know this is happening? Because skin disorders such as eczema, shingles, chicken pox or measles are much worse during the night. How often have you woken up in the morning to be greeted by a pimple?
  • There are no environmental factors that you need to protect your skin from while you’re asleep.
  • A night cream – which is usually a heavy, expensive, occlusive substance impedes your skin’s normal night time process.
  • Sleeping isn’t ageing!

Dr. Hauschka’s gentle and effective Soothing Cleansing Milk respects your skin’s pH and hydrolipid layer, along with hydrating treatment product Toner, supports our no night cream stance. Dr. Hauschka’s night treatment preparations embrace botanical essences held in a watery solution. These allow the skin to breathe freely and overcome any weaknesses and imbalances.

At first our ‘no night cream’ guiding principle seems unusual, however within one month (a skin cell cycle) you’ll need no more convincing!

New customers support your skin in the transition off the use of night cream with Renewing Night Conditioner, one ampoule a night for a month, then switch to Night Serum or Regenerating Serum.

Melissa (Lemon Balm)

Melissa-Profile-large

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This page tells you more about Melissa (Lemon Balm), where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

Melissa-Why-large-PlantRaw material profile

Run your hands through a bunch of strong, green melissa leaves (Melissa officinalis) and you will be treated to a fresh, lemony fragrance. This gentle touch test differentiates the peppermint-shaped leaves from those of mint plants. Lemon balm, as melissa is also known, has a truly unmistakeable fragrance. Freshly plucked from the plant, however, the leaves taste surprisingly harsh and slightly bitter – quite unlike you would expect based on their aroma. The fresh fragrance is created by certain constituents of the plant’s complex essential oil, primarily citronellal, geranial and neral, whereas the taste comes from the natural bitters and tannins. Melissa only contains about 0.3% essential oil, which is therefore classed as one of the most valuable and expensive oils. The area of cultivation, climate and time of harvest all have a strong influence on the overall composition. The tannins, such as rosemarinic acid, chlorogenic and caffeic acid, as well as flavonoids, supplement the leaves’ essential oils.

Melissa-Slider-01

The white petals concealed in the leaf axils open up from July to August. If you take a closer look inside the petals, you will spot the lip which is typical of labiates, the family to which melissa belongs. The petals smell honey sweet, especially in contrast to the lemony leaves.

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 10.50.48 AM

Melissa-Why-large

Why is melissa used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

Melissa touches our hearts. When growing, it forms a spherical shape to create a protected inner area in which the delicate petals can flourish. It radiates a sense of protection and warmth. We primarily focus on its leaves; its petals remain in the background. Each leaf is heart-shaped and forms a mediating centre between the two polar plant elements of the roots and the petals. With its pronounced centre, melissa is a master of balance and transfers this strength to our bodies. It helps imbalanced skin to rediscover its inner harmony.

Melissa Day Cream

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 11.10.12 AM

Melissa Day Cream balances areas of dry and oily skin to restore sensitive combination skin’s natural equilibrium. Melissa has a harmonising effect and stimulates the skin’s natural activities. Anthyllis and witch hazel help to standardise the skin’s rhythm. Carrot extract soothes the skin and helps it discover its own centre. A balanced complexion free from shine is the result.

Melissa-Slider-02

“This remedy makes the heart joyful.” These were the words used by the Benedictine nun, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) to describe Melissa.

Melissa-Slider-03

The Carmelites of the French Abbey St. Juste added Melissa to their Carmelite water, which they manufactured under the name ‘Eau de Carnes’ for Charles V of France (1338-1380) as a remedy for threatening colds and gastrointestinal problems.

Melissa-Slider-04

Bees love the fragrance of Melissa and associate it with ample sources of food. They produce a gland secretion that smells similar to Melissa and use this to mark the feeding areas that are rich in nectar or pollen. The plant’s name reflects this close relationship in Greek, Melissa = honey bee.

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 10.45.32 AM

Melissa-Origin-large

Origin, cultivation and processing

Most of the melissa used in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products is only grown a kilometre away from WALA/Dr. Hauschka. Staff at the Sonnenhof Farm, our own Demeter farm, cultivate the melissa plants using careful manual procedures and in line with biodynamic farming methods. They monitor the plants closely and harvest the melissa leaves just before they start to blossom. They then use warmed external air to carefully dry the fresh leaves at the farm itself at temperatures that are always kept below 40°C. This preserves most of the essential oil. WALA mixes the dried melissa leaves with pure, organic plant oil. The melissa and the oil are then left to mature for a week in line with a proprietary, rhythmic procedure. During this phase, the compound is heated to 37°C – human body temperature. It is carefully mixed every morning and evening to enable the melissa to transfer all its benefits to the oil.

Melissa originally comes from the Eastern Mediterranean region and Western Asia. Rather than extremely arid or extremely damp conditions, it prefers a climate that is warm but not too hot. It has been known as a medicinal plant and spice since back in antiquity. WALA has specially developed an extract from the leaves, which is soothing and balancing.
