Powerful Night Care

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care is formulated to offer you nurturing experiences that benefit your total wellbeing. By day, our Face Care nourishes, protects from the environment and guides your skin to a healthy, balanced state. At night, our water-based Night Care allows skin to breathe freely while supporting its natural processes of renewal and elimination. All our products are NATRUE certified as 100% natural and organic skin care.

Powerful night care with medicinal botanical extracts
Powerful and liberating – oil-free night care

Did you know that at night your skin is very active? We follow this alternating rhythm every day of our lives. During the day our bodies open up to the environment and nourishment, while the night is used to process and prepare for the new day ahead.

Your skin uses your nightly rest period to thoroughly regenerate from within as it does not need to protect itself against environmental influences at night. The skin can open up during this phase and optimally cleanse itself from within by metabolic elimination.

The next morning your skin looks wonderful and recuperated when you support it with the right night care.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care supports this nightly regeneration process with aqueous, revitalising night care products that respect the skin’s natural rhythm. These are based on medicinal botanical extracts, which offer the skin important stimuli. Back in the 1930s, Elisabeth Sigmund discovered that night creams actually hinder the skin’s vital night-time processes. When she worked with us in the 1960s, this concept was fundamental in the development of our night care.

But what exactly does it mean when we say that Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products give the skin stimuli? Our products do not only provide care for the surface of your skin, but also activate and support the skin’s own regenerative abilities. You could think of our products as a ‘role model’ for your skin, not taking over the work, but to guide and support our skin to regenerate itself.

Night Care:

Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner and Night Serum or Regenerating Serum each evening, or Renewing Night Conditioner 28-30 night treatment, particularly recommended in the most transitional seasons of autumn and spring or Sensitive Care Conditioner or morning and evening or Regenerating Intensive Treatment, Menopausal Intensive Treatment, Soothing Intensive Treatment, Clarifying Intensive Treatment <25 years or Clarifying Intensive Treatment 25+ years.

Interview with Elena Dowedeit, Group Leader of Skin Care Product Management, explains how aqueous, stimuli-packed night care with medicinal plant extracts should be used for healthy skin.

Elena, many customers do not think that Dr. Hauschka offers night care. How would you respond to this as an expert?

We have a comprehensive night care range that follows a completely unique concept. We opt for aqueous, stimulating formulations, which assist the skin with its nightly regeneration processes. We have been building on this concept since 1967 when Dr. Hauschka Skin Care was first launched.

What are the skin’s regeneration processes you mentioned?

At night, when we rest, our skin becomes active. For example, many metabolic processes take place. The skin cleanses and renews itself during the night. It excretes excess substances and forms new ones. We want to support it during this phase with our night care products.

You just said that you use aqueous formulations for these night care products. Why don’t you offer oil-based night creams?

Oily preparations protect the skin and are for the daytime. At night, the skin no longer focuses on providing protection. Oil-free, aqueous products are better at this time. They act as a role model for the skin, demonstrating a vibrant, opening and dynamic metabolic process. This works best with the elixir of life: water. At the same time, they do not impede the active excretion of substances.

How exactly does oil-free night care support the skin over night?

At the heart of the finely balanced compositions are rhythmic medicinal plant extracts and carefully selected minerals. When developing the products, we drew on our wealth of medical and pharmaceutical expertise. These formulations are our answer to the skin’s needs at night. The ingredients stimulate the skin’s natural abilities and regulate its fine metabolic processes. With the aid of this support, the skin can regulate its functions.

You mentioned an entire night care range. What does that consist of?

We differentiate between basic night care products for nightly use and products that are used in 28-day treatment phases. The basic night care regime comprises the three steps: cleanse, tone and revitalise. The core night care product for treatment phases is Renewing Night Conditioner, an ampoule treatment which revitalises the skin.

Why do the treatment phases last 28 days?

It takes 28 days for all of the cells in human skin to completely renew. Renewing Night Conditioner supports this 28-day rhythm with the aid of medicinal plants such as rose, marsh mallow and anthyllis, supplemented by silver and madonna lily – all rhythmically prepared with great vitality. It teaches the skin how to return to a balanced skin condition. Depending on the skin’s needs, we also offer intensive treatments, for example for mature skin, youthful, blemished skin or hypersensitive skin.

How did you come up with the idea of aqueous night care?

We have Elisabeth Sigmund to thank for this concept. The Viennese esthetician and researcher developed her own natural cosmetics range in the 1950s. In the 1960s, she played a major role in the development of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. In Vienna, she studied medicine for two semesters and spent a long time looking at the physiology of the skin. While doing so, she theorised about the benefits of oil-free night care for the skin . Her own tests confirmed her statement. Incidentally, there is a lovely quote from Elisabeth Sigmund from the period in the 1960s when Dr. Hauschka Skin Care was first being developed. At the time, she was living in Sweden and involved in the development work from afar. When Dr. Hauschka Renewing Night Conditioner (then known as Rhythmic Night Conditioner) was developed, she wrote: “I have now performed a full skin treatment on myself with such success that my husband recently asked: ‘Why have you recently been looking so young?’ No further comment is needed.”

The Nightly skin care regime in three steps

Rhythm brings life and creates beautiful skin

To remain strong and healthy, the skin needs to rhythmically alternate between natural polarities. A comparison of the times of day with the seasons helps to better understand the rhythmic processes in the skin. Apple blossom and apple fruit in Dr. Hauschka Night Serum support these processes with their spring and autumn powers.

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of our raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

Why is organic beeswax an ingredient in many Dr. Hauschka products?

A burning beeswax candle reveals a great deal about the special features of beeswax. It emits a warm light and fills the room with a pleasant and comforting fragrance.

Beeswax represents warmth and structure, created from a living being. It is a highly energy-packed construction material that bees produce and, with the aid of heat, use to create their highly regular honeycombs: cells that provide the space and protective shell for new life (breeding cells) and storage (honeycomb cells).

Beeswax transfers these enveloping and warming properties to Dr. Hauschka products. It gives structure to products like the Lipsticks, provides a kind of breathable protection against external influences, retains moisture and enhances the skin’s elasticity. The skin feels protected and cared for.

Hydrating Hand Cream

Hydrating Hand Cream formulation is supplemented with beeswax. This protectively envelops the hands and potentially gives its vibrantly warm structure. Blackthorn oil extract supports the enveloping effect with extra warmth, while an extract of moisture-regulating bryophyllum is revitalising and almond oil is nourishing.

A rapidly absorbed, highly nourishing hand cream, that doesn’t leave a greasy residue for hands that are silky soft and wonderfully smooth.

Raw material profile

Beeswax is a miraculous substance. Honeybees (Apis mellifera) feed on large amounts of nectar and pollen and use the nutritional value obtained to do things like create wax – a substance with an extremely high energy content. The bees consolidate the energy in their food and secrete wax scales measuring about 1 millimetre from their abdominal glands. These are then used to construct honeycombs. The wax scales are translucent like mountain crystals and as light as a feather, weighing just 0.0008 g. It takes 125,000 wax scales to produce 100 grams of beeswax.

Newly constructed natural honeycombs are almost snow white in colour. The beeswax only turns the well-known shade of yellow once the bees start to use the honeycomb structure. The wax is dyed by flavonoids from propolis and carotenoids from pollen. Overall, beeswax consists of more than 300 different substances.

Screen Shot 2016-04-20 at 11.58.46 AM

The honeycomb itself is a masterpiece of lightweight construction. It provides maximum interior space with minimal use of construction material. The bees create cylindrical cells from the insalivated wax scales and then use the warmth generated by their muscles to heat the wax to over 40°C. The wax becomes malleable and automatically takes on a hexagonal form with a thickness of just 0.07 millimetres. The heat activates enzymes in the saliva, which solidify the wax through a chemical reaction.

The completed honeycomb is formed from the combination of an ingenious construction material and heat, both of which are produced by the bees through great energy usage. To create a medium-sized beehive with 100,000 cells and some 1.2 kilograms of wax, the bees need the energy contained in 7.5 kilograms of honey.

Incidentally, all of the honeycomb cells made by a bee colony are of almost identical size. Variations are only found from colony to colony. This is an expression of a bee colony’s individual personality.

Origin and processing

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products are solely made from organic beeswax sourced from ecological beekeeping practices in Germany. The producers are subject to the strict regulations established by Demeter or Bioland, the association for organic farming. Demeter and Bioland specify, among other things, that bees must live in a natural beehive made from wood, straw or clay. Only natural dyes without wood preservatives can be used for weatherproofing purposes and no chemical/synthetic medication can ever be used to treat the bees. Demeter furthermore stipulates that bee colonies can only be multiplied through the natural process of swarming. The associations continually review the compliance with the regulations in cooperation with state-certified inspection bodies.

The beeswax is obtained by being melted out of the honeycomb. WALA/Dr. Hauschka purchases this wax in blocks straight from the beekeepers and has it carefully processed to form pellets, which are easier to use.

We have a tradition of protecting bees. Bee colonies have been at home in the Dr. Hauschka biodynamic medicinal plant garden since the start of the 1980s. The bees are kept in line with Demeter regulations and allowed to swarm. The 150 medicinal plants as well as bee-friendly plants such as species of phacelia (scorpion weed) provide the bees with great nutritional variety.

We also believe it’s important to support local beekeepers. As a result, it financially and scientifically supports the HOBOSPhere project run by Prof. Jürgen Tautz in Würzburg, which focusses on the development of a new kind of beekeeping. This is based on the honeybee sphere, a beehive that replicates bees’ natural home.

Humans first began to use products from bees over 9,000 years ago – primarily honey. Beeswax was used for medicinal purposes, in skin care products, as fuel and for sealing containers.

Bees use muscular tremors to maintain a constant average temperature of 35.5°C in the beehive, they have social skills and the ability to communicate.

Every Day – Morning

1) Drink warm water and lemon juice first thing upon waking in the morning and do this every morning. If it’s going to be easier then juice a pile of lemons, put the juice in ice blocks and freeze. Take one block out each night and place in a cup, so you’re ready for the morning. We need to make this habit quick and easy. Aids the body in a clear skin, flushing out toxins, jump starts the digestive tract, aids the liver in its cleansing processes and increases detoxification.

2) Use 5 drops of Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence in your basin cleansing water. We recommend Compress & Hydration + Press & Roll, at the basin, rather than cleansing in your morning shower.

Why do we promote ‘Compress & Hydrate’?
a) Warming your skin first softens your pores to ensure a much deeper cleanse
b) You will use your cleansing products much more economically
c) Complete by splashing or compressing with cool water after cleansing to activates a minute muscle beside the hair follicle, contraction helps to remove any last remaining dirt
d) Your skin will feel so much softer without the need for harsh exfoliation
e) Check out our Compress & Hydrate + Press & Roll video

We want you to get the best results!

3) Cleansing Cream – ‘press & roll’ technique.

4) Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner – close eyes and mist onto the skin, 3 pumps should do.

5) Day Care – all are highly concentrated so should always be warmed between the palms of the hands and applied to skin still moist from Toner. This ensures even and economical application.

Clarifying Day Oil – to balance and regulate an oily/blemished skin
Melissa Day Cream – for sensitive combination (oily t-zone, dry/normal cheeks) skin
Rose Day Cream Light – for normal or sensitive skin, usually recommended for a younger skin, up to around 35.
Rose Day Cream – rich and highly protective for normal, dry, sensitive, mature skin
Quince Day Cream – cooling, soothing and protective for normal skin or sensitive skin
Tinted Day Cream – tinted moisturiser for normal, dry, sensitive or mature skin
Revitalising Day Cream – for aiding sebaceous activity and guiding skin to a balanced state in a normal, dry, mature/pallid skin
Regenerating Serum & Regenerating Day Cream – specific support for firming a maturing skin

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Every Day – Evening

1) ‘Compress and Hydrate’ skin to soften the pores in readiness for cleansing. Use 5 drops of Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence in the water
2) Soothing Cleansing Milk
3) Apply Renewing Night Conditioner or Sensitive Care Conditioner ampoule.

This is your weekly routine, so repeat until you reach your 28th evening. By which time your skin will be deeply cleansed, nourished, more even toned, soft, radiant and healthy!

Mixing Clarifying Clay Mask with water in readiness for application

For those that need it here’s step by step instructions on how to do a Clarifying Steam BathClarifying Clay Mask and Cream Mask for Day 1 which will be repeated once a week during the programme, alternatively there’s full instructions in your product box:

1. Compress and hydrate your skin, cleanse with Soothing Cleansing Milk, remove with the warm, moist Dr. Hauschka Compress Cloth.
2. Place 1 heaped teaspoon of Clarifying Clay Mask in a small container in readiness.
3. Dilute two teaspoons of Clarifying Steam Bath with ½ litre (500ml) of steaming water in a large bowl. Lean over the bowl, covering the head with towel, and steam for 5-10 minutes. Follow with Clarifying Clay Mask application.

Please note: If you don’t wish to steam, then you may do this step with Clarifying Steam Bath and ‘Compress and Hydrate’ instead.

4. While your skin is still warm and moist mix 2 to 2 1/2 teaspoons of water (I use the Clarifying Steam Bath water) to the Clarifying Clay Mask in the small container. The consistency you want is spreadable, not too thin because it will drip off your face and not a paste.

5. Apply mask to your face and neck excluding eye contour area ideally with a mask brush. Apply from the centre of the face outwards. We always work in the direction of lymph flow. Allow to dry, it’s no longer active once dry.

Clarifying Clay Mask Tip: Watch where the clay mask dries first. That’s a good indication that particular area of your face is dehydrated. Are you missing that area with your Day Care? Do you need a richer Day Care product?

6. To remove Clarifying Clay Mask the Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Sponge makes the job quick and easy, but a non white face flannel will do, moistened with the now lukewarm facial steam water. Remove by moistening the mask first, then wiping.

7. Now apply your Cream Mask (Revitalising, Hydrating, Firming or Soothing) including the eye contour area, as an eye mask.

8. Leave on for at least 30 minutes to absorb. I leave mine on for most of the evening. Remove Cream Mask with a warm moist Compress Cloth before bedtime.

9. Apply the contents of a Renewing Night Conditioner Ampoule.

Please note: If you are new to Renewing Night Conditioner ampoules, flick the top to ensure all liquid is in the bottom of the ampoule, then using a towel break off the glass top. Pour 1/2 the contents into the palm of one hand, spread between the palms of the hands and quickly press into the skin and repeat with the balance of the liquid. Apply nothing further to your skin. It’s bedtime.

Note: We do not recommend any heat for a rosacea skin condition – use tepid water for a Compress & Hydrate instead.

Your skin will reward you for the extra effort, it will look radiant, refined and even toned, nourished and pampered. x

Sage Mint Deodorant and Rose Deodorant

The formulations of Dr. Hauschka Deodorant were optimised in 2015. They rely on the authentic nature and the full force of their natural ingredients. The effective formulas make it difficult for odour causing bacteria to grow. As a finely balanced composition, the two roll-ons protect and care for the skin, are well tolerated by the skin, and do not stain and do not contain pore constricting aluminium salts. An elegant, delicate fragrance of rose and herb and the fresh touch of sage and mint.

The oil-free Dr. Hauschka Sage Mint Deodorant contains the essences of sage and witch hazel, two naturally effective, anti-microbial and astringent components. The vivacious fragrance of mint and the natural bouquet of sage harmonise to provide a long-lasting feeling of freshness. Feel fresh – in every situation

New Dr. Hauschka deodorants provide protection and care for the skin. Whether during exercise or in stressful situations, the body starts to sweat under a wide variety of circumstances. Perspiration is a completely normal metabolic function, but it can be unpleasant in certain situations. This is why the new deodorants from Dr. Hauschka inhibit the growth of bacteria and cover odours naturally. However, they do not suppress the process of perspiration itself – which means they do not need to contain aluminium compounds.

Like a balm for the skin, Rose Deodorant contains moisturising jojoba oil, while Sage Mint Deodorant has a gel-like consistency and is oil-free. Both stay on the skin longer than short-acting deodorant sprays, imparting a lasting feeling of natural freshness.

How quickly and how much a person perspires depends on a number of factors – diet, clothing, and individual levels of activity and stress. Perspiration regulates the body’s temperature, eliminates metabolic wastes and combines with the skin’s acid mantle to form a barrier that protects us from harmful germs.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 10.37.33 am

What makes Dr. Hauschka Deodorants’ so effective in fighting the undesirable side-effects of perspiration?

The key lies in the newly developed formulas, with their authentic character and the full power of their naturally astringent, anti-microbial and moisturising ingredients. Both products are vegan and contain neither aluminium chlorohydrate nor other soluble aluminium compounds which constrict the sweat glands. The fundamentally different formulas of the two deodorants combine effective skin care and proven protection. Deodorising ingredients were composed and refined with moisturising extracts of medicinal plants and natural essential oils.

  • Tests have shown that both products are very well tolerated by the skin and offer long-lasting effectiveness
  • Do not sting when applied directly after shaving
  • Do not leave any traces on clothing

Please note: If you are going through transition from anti-perspirant use, that blocks your pores, to natural and organic Dr. Hauschka Deodorants, you may experience a couple of weeks detox.

Daily Mail > Possible link between anti-perspirants and breast cancer

Telegraph > Aluminium possible link to breast cancer

Editor’s note: When my partner’s Aunty was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer her oncologist advised “Switch to a natural deodorant such as Dr. Hauschka.” Of course her oncologist had no knowledge that I worked for Dr. Hauschka. I believe women should be made aware of comments such as this.

Why do we perspire?

Perspiring or sweating plays a vital role in maintaining normal health because it helps our bodies:

  • eliminate toxins
  • maintain the balance of salt levels
  • regulate the body temperature

On average we lose around 500mls to 1 litre of liquid a day through our skin. Generally, this evaporates very quickly.

We perspire

  • when we exert ourselves through exercise and physical activity
  • with the release of adrenaline due to fear or worry
  • when your environment is too warm

Interestingly, perspiration is almost odourless when it’s fresh, but when it stays on the skin it develops an odour. This smell is created by bacteria that breed in the warm, moist and nutrient-rich conditions created by perspiration.

What’s the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants?

Antiperspirants: Stop you from perspiring

Deodorants: Stop the bacteria from smelling, by killing the bacteria or neutralising the smell

The science behind deodorant

Scientists figured out that the best approach would be to prevent these bacteria from breeding, thereby having a deodorising action. The first commercial deodorant was launched in 1888. Unfortunately, in the quest for ever stronger and more effective deodorants, stronger and more powerful chemicals started to be used.

The science behind antiperspirants

Antiperspirants are based on ingredients such as aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium zirconium trichlorohydrate. These aluminium ions form a temporary blockage in the sweat ducts, stopping the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface.

Most antiperspirants contain ingredients which react with protein molecules present in perspiration and swell to form a gel-like substance. For these to be effective, their molecular size needs to be small enough to allow them to enter skin pores so that when they swell and turn to a gel, they effectively block the pores and prevent sweat from being secreted.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 11.35.47 am

What’s the alternative to chemical deodorants?

Zinc ricinoleate is the zinc salt of ricinoleic acid, extracted from the seeds of the castor oil plant. Zinc ricinoleate does not inhibit normal perspiration, and will not interfere with the natural flora of the skin. Instead, it ‘fixes’ the odours produced by bacterial decomposition in sweat so that they cannot be released into the atmosphere and cause the characteristic sweaty smell.

Chemicals in deodorants

Many familiar brands of deodorants contain triclosan. The chemicals in deodorants which prevent bacteria from growing have been linked to health problems ranging from skin irritation and contact dermatitis. Excessive use of spray deodorants have also been linked with more serious problems such as allergic reactions, asthma and breathing difficulties.

Chemicals in antiperspirants

Aluminium found in antiperspirants can cause inflammation, Aluminium chlorohydrate and Aluminium zirconium chlorohydrate are both used in chemical antiperspirants. These are both based on aluminium and can cause skin irritation.

Research suggests that aluminium-based compounds may be linked to elevated aluminium levels and health problems including breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Antiperspirants also have another downside – not only can they cause the problems mentioned above, but they also prevent the body from eliminating toxins through perspiration and reduce our ability to regulate body temperature.

Black Tea – Beautiful Eyes

Screen Shot 2016-04-07 at 12.10.35 PM

An interview with Marie Calas, Head of Skin Care Development at Dr. Hauschka

As Head of Skin Care Development, you work on many different formulations. Nurturing, nourishing plant extracts are always part of these. In the case of the Eyeshadows, you have opted for black tea. Why tea?

A cooled black teabag is a tried-and-tested home remedy for tired or irritated eyes. Tea contains tannins, which, when used in a compress, are refreshing and reduce puffiness. We want our make-up to have the same effect. However, instead of placing damp tea bags on our customer’s eyes, we integrate the plant’s nurturing properties into our formulations.

How do you transform tea into Eyeshadow?

It is actually a rather complicated process. First, we create an aqueous extract made from organic tea leaves and mix it with extracts of witch hazel and anthyllis. These nurturing plant extracts are common in our skin care products, but as liquids. To integrate them into a product that comes in powder form, the essences are sprayed onto a natural mineral and air dried. This gives us a fine powder that embodies the strengths of the three plants. This process, which gives structure to a liquid, ultimately transfers the same benefits as a cup of black tea: it gives us clarity and restores order.

When is colour added to a formulation?

The powdered extracts of tea, anthyllis and witch hazel come together with other ingredients such as silk powder and silica to form the basis of all our Eyeshadows. The colours are created by various minerals, such as iron oxide or mica. These pigments range from soft notes of rose and peach through an entire palette of earthy shades, to a vibrant lilac and dark anthracite.

Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 4.45.00 PM
Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist

How do you create a new Eyeshadow?

We developers let ourselves be inspired – ideally by nature itself. We look at the world around us as well as at our inner landscapes. You could say that it is an act of creative visualisation in colourful dialogue with everyday life. We try to translate this dialogue into skin care formulations. Once we have created initial product samples, we involve other colleagues from the Marketing and Skin Care Consultation departments, as well as our International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar. Karim tests the new Eyeshadows on various skin tones and gives us specific suggestions for the final formulation: perhaps a little more mica, maybe a little less coverage, or possibly a stronger hint of red. It is important that the new shade not only has the perfect composition but can also be perfectly combined with other Dr. Hauschka products.

Black Tea
This tea is not only popular as a stimulating drink, though; it is also a sought-after cosmetic ingredient.

Tea gardens cover the hillsides in southeast China like lush green carpets. Here, in Hunan Province, tea is cultivated and harvested for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. This peninsula is home to the organic Qingshan tea farm, which is renowned for a classic black tea with a mild flavour and a reddish-brown colour in the cup. This tea is not only popular as a stimulating drink, though; it is also a sought-after cosmetic ingredient. The dried tea leaves contain caffeine and valuable tannins with soothing, decongesting and toning properties. These properties are especially beneficial for the sensitive area around the eyes, which is why extracts of black tea enrich the entire Dr. Hauschka make-up range including Mascara, Eyeliners and Eyeshadows in all shades.

The Rhythm Of The Night – Interview

When the skin flows with the rhythm of the night
Annette Greco, Head of Galenic Development, on night-time with Dr. Hauschka Skin Care

You deal with the formulation of new products and the rhythm of our skin. Are the differences between day and night really so noticeable different?

“Yes, they are. The idea that we’re active during the day and completely shut down at night falls short. There is more of a switchover: whereas during the day our bodies are open to the environment, absorbing impressions and nourishment, the night is used to process all that we took in. We form memories and regenerate, grow and gain strength. In fact, it is precisely because our consciousness takes a time-out that we are tremendously active at night and can lay the foundation for yet another day. That’s why it’s so important that we live both polarities. There is no day without night. Even when we can extend the daylight at will and effortlessly overcome time zones, the rhythm of life still affects us. If we go against it, it can make us ill. When we flow along with it, we lay the foundation for health, presence and beauty.”

What does this mean for your work?

“We want to develop formulations that respect this rhythm. Formulations that provide total support for full vibrancy. Ones which protect and nourish during the day and support the body’s reconstructive process at night.”

What challenges did you face while developing the Night Serum?

“We use water based, liquid products for the night care range. When it came to the Night Serum as well as for our Regenerating Serum, we sought formulations which imparted the aspect of living water, but at the same time offered a consistency familiar to our customers. We therefore came up with a serum that is neither liquid nor solid. This consistency can also be found in our bodies, for example in our blood or lymphatic system.”

Why, in contrast to other skin care brands, does Dr. Hauschka recommend using oil-free night care instead of a rich night cream?

“Because it better enables us to support the natural processes. During the day the emphasis is on substances – nutrition is the major factor. Therefore, during the day, your skin can use the protection and nourishment offered by your skin care products. At night, on the other hand, your skin needs something different: support for the natural processes rather than more substances. At night, our skin care products take a step back from offering additional substances and instead help to stimulate the natural processes. It’s a bit like parenting where we can’t always just provide for and look after the child. At certain times we also need to indicate: you can do it, I know your strength. But I’m always here if you need me.”

How can people successfully start using or switch to oil-free Dr. Hauschka night care?

“The switch starts with your attitude. If you’ve always generally been the type to rely a lot on your skin care products, you might get the feeling that you’re giving your skin too little. In fact, it’s the complete opposite! You’re giving your skin more care and respect while also demanding more of it. And this will sometimes show, for example by your skin tightening slightly. This reaction can be interpreted as a good sign: your skin is waking up, stirring and beginning an active process, which had before slipped somewhat from its responsibilities. Interestingly, your skin will tend to be taut in the evening, whereas in the mornings, after a reconstructive night phase, it will be at peace with itself and the world.”

Can I somehow help the transition phase?

“Definitely. With 30 nights (a skin cell cycle is 28-30 days) Ampoule treatment, instead of Toner, you can offer your skin additional supportive stimuli and in the early evenings a mask can help to usher in the transition from day to night. The mask should, however, be removed before going to sleep to leave the rest to the oil-free night care. The final step of the day is the careful application of the Night Serum or Regenerating Serum. Give your skin a little undivided attention and let the day go.”

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This blog tells you more about our key ingredient, Anthyllis, aka Woundwort, where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

Plant profile

In its first year of growth, anthyllis forms a lush green rosette of leaves at ground level. Only in the second year do flower stems then grow from these, reaching heights of up to 90 cm and becoming densely covered in flowers. Stand by a field of anthyllis on a warm day and you’ll hear the hum of insects as bees and butterflies visit the nectar-rich flowers.

Each anthyllis head is made up of multiple long petals, surrounded by a green crown of leaves. Unlike other species in the plant kingdom, the individual flowers never open up fully; instead, they form a cup in which nectar can collect.

The chalk-loving plant is found on fallow fields and meadows, by the wayside and on sunny slopes, but never where the soil is over-fertilised.

Facial Toner ingredients

In Facial Toner, anthyllis fortifies the skin together with a witch hazel extract, which supports the rhythmic processes. After cleansing, Facial Toner activates the skin’s flexible and vibrant barrier function to create a fresh, radiant complexion. It prepares the skin for daytime or nighttime skin care.

Why is anthyllis used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

Anthyllis looks different depending on its location. In other words, it knows how to adapt. It can grow wildly and exuberantly, but also in a controlled, structured manner. As an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, it uses these properties to unfurl delicate, regulating abilities, flexibly adapting to all skin conditions. It addresses the skin as an organ with all of its functions and helps it to establish boundaries without become rigid. Skin that’s fortified gives us an adaptable barrier. Anthyllis provides the stimuli needed to guide any skin condition to a balanced, healthy condition, to revive it and to harmonise.

Origin, cultivation and processing

The anthyllis used in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products is mainly sourced from our biodynamically cultivated Demeter Sonnenhof Farm in Bad Boll, Germany. Straight after harvest, Dr. Hauschka/WALA employees process the blossoming plants, using a special rhythmic WALA procedure to obtain an essence from them. The extract is obtained using a cool mixture of water and alcohol. A rhythmic WALA procedure is also used to obtain an oil extract from dried anthyllis. This is mixed with warm apricot kernel oil at a temperature of 37°C (human body temperature) and further processed. The different ways of handling the plant highlight its diverse properties. Both extracts are used in many Dr. Hauschka Skin Care formulations.

Anthyllis belongs to the faboideae family, a subfamily of the fabaceae (pea) family. It first originated from Southern Europe but is today found almost all over Europe as well as in Western Asia, North Africa and America.

The scientific name anthyllis vulneraria is derived from the plant’s usage and appearance; anthos > petal, ioulas > beard, volnus > wound. Combined, these terms indicate that this is a hairy flowering plant that can be used to treat wounds.

This medicinal plant was mentioned by the Greek doctor Dioskurides using the name anthyllis back in the 1st century A.D. In the Middle Ages, anthyllis was mentioned in herb books as a plant that helped to heal wounds.

The caterpillars from Germany;s smallest butterfly feed on anthyllis. Wild bees appreciate anthyllis as a source of nectar.
