Make-up Mistakes & How To Rectify Them

1) Using an incorrect foundation shade

When your face doesn’t match your neck.

Solutions: Have your colour matching professionally done in store, but always check in daylight not under store lights. Don’t use the back of your hand to check colour, use your jaw line. Alternatively follow Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar’s Top Application Tips & Tricks Video. I find a Foundation Blending Brush works well to ensure colour blends onto neck.

Tip: You’ll find Dr. Hauschka NEW Foundations much easier to colour match. If you need more warm tones in summer just add a little Translucent Bronzing Tint to your Foundation.

Translucent tip: You can also mix Foundation with your Dr. Hauschka Moisturiser for a translucent look or apply with a moist sponge.

2) Dark lipliner with lighter lipstick

Solution: Ensure your lipliner matches your lipstick. Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist, recommends applying lip liner all over the lips simply because lipstick comes off and liner stays put and outlined lips are not what you’re looking for.

3) Blush that looks like racing stripes or no blush at all

Solution: Smile and apply blush lightly to the ‘apples’ of your cheeks. Always use a big Powder/Blusher Brush which is better at distributing colour, shake off excess, then apply. Your aim is to get subtle colour in your cheeks, think of a child’s cheeks. We often see a flat make-up, with no blusher or bronzer. It’s important for a youthful make-up to add the colour back in after applying Foundation and Powder.

Model’s lip colour is Lipliner 01 and Lipstick 04

4) Applying too much powder

Powder is important to set your Foundation for a longer lasting make-up, however, it looks caked if too much is used.

Solution: Use a large Powder Brush, tap off excess, then apply downwards to smooth down fine hairs. Finish with a spritz of Dr. Hauschka Toner which takes away a powdery look and also helps to set your make-up.

5) Applying Make-up too soon after Moisturiser

Or applying make-up to skin that hasn’t been cleansed, toned and moisturised.

Solution: Wait while your day care product absorbs into the skin. I do my morning regime of Cleansing Cream, Toner and Moisturiser then have breakfast and get dressed so my skin care has plenty of time to absorb. The aim is to apply your make-up evenly on clean, nourished and protected skin.

Dr. Hauschka decorate Cosmetic; Dr. Hauschska Dekorative Kosmetik
Model is wearing Kajal Eyeliner Duo 01 Anthracite, Eyeshadow Solo 07 and 09, Rouge Powder 03, Volume Mascara Black.

6) Clumpy Eyelashes

Never pump your mascara which forces air into the tube and dries out the formula.

Solution: Dr. Hauschka Mascara and Volume Mascara are made with nourishing ingredients such as Candelilla Wax, precious Damask Rose Blossom Wax and Beeswax. Remember all mascaras, natural and organic or otherwise should be replaced every 3 months. Pop a reminder in your phone when you purchase a new mascara for 3 months time.

Tip: Karim Sattar our International Make-up Artist recommends using a softer colour than black on bottom lashes, because you don’t want to enhance anything downward for a youthful make-up. Try Pearl Anthracite or Aubergine Volume Mascara, or Brown Mascara.

7) Eyeliner lines

Keep it softer during the day, apply eyeliner pencil to the outer 1/3rd and blend inwards, then set with eye shadow and an angled brush. Anthracite is a soft black which is flattering for a day time make-up.

3. Remember Body Care, Hand and Nail Care and Foot Care too, especially if you’re wearing strappy shoes with heels on show. Moisturising is key and once you use Dr. Hauschka Body Moisturisers it’s hard to accept anything of lesser quality. Natural and organic ingredients are just as important for your body. We love Quince Body Moisturiser for its cooling, soothing and deeply hydrating qualities, Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Moisturising for its refreshing and energising aroma and After Sun is another of our summer time favourites. For a mature bride then choose Regenerating Body Cream for its firming and toning as well as deeply nourishing abilities.

If your feet are dry, particularly check your heels, use Hydrating Foot Cream, however if you have feet with a tendency to perspire then use Deodorising Foot Cream. Hand Cream and Neem Nail Oil Pen are a must.

4. Kissable lips with regular use of Lip Care Stick or Lip Balm.

5. Clean your make-up brushes weekly to avoid acne causing bacteria and to ensure true colours. Always clean your brushes in an ecological gentle hand wash or body wash and dry flat not upstanding. As for pimples always have Coverstick on hand for concealing and treating, incredible product!

6. Get your beauty sleep.

7. Regular exercise, 30 minutes daily in the fresh air will do. Movement supports your body’s lymph system.

8. Nutrition, eat fresh, organic wherever possible. Read 15 Top Foods for Healthy Skin

9. It’s really important to reduce stress. If you’re not already then meditate daily, do yoga, tai chi, read a great book, spend time with great friends, whatever it takes, as stress shows on your face.

10. We want your skin looking radiant for your big day. Ideally you need to be taking extra special care of your skin 1 year out, however if you don’t have that amount of time adopt these skin care rituals as soon as possible. A healthy, balanced, vibrant skin comes from using the highest quality natural and organic ingredients, not synthetic chemicals.

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 4.19.40 pm

Recommendations:

1) Dr. Hauschka every morning ritual: Cleanse, Tone or use Intensive Treatment & Moisturise
2) Dr. Hauschka every evening ritual: Cleanse, Tone or use 1 ampoule of Conditioner, or Intensive Treatment
3) Once a week, maybe a Sunday night, Cleanse, Clarifying Steam Bath, Clarifying Clay Mask and follow with Revitalising Mask which benefits all skin conditions
4) Another night of the week Cleanse early in the evening, apply Revitalising Mask and include eye contour area, leave to absorb for as long as possible and remove with a warm, moist cloth prior to bedtime

Tip: We recommend Soothing Intensive Treatment morning and evening instead of Toner one month out from wedding for hypersensitive skin or a skin suffering from any stress condition.

10 Wedding Make-up Tips

1. Do your brow, upper lip and any other facial waxing at least 3 days before the wedding
2. Avoid products that use SPF, they tend to give very pale look in photographs
3. Use a matte moisturiser on the day, Melissa Day Cream has a very matte finish and helps to control shine or Rose Day Cream Light
4. For a long lasting make-up go for our International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar’s technique of:
a) Translucent Make-up 00 as a primer
b) Concealer, inner eye only, not outer eye
c) Translucent Powder Loose, applied with Powder Brush and tapped to remove excess before applying
d) Translucent Make-up in your shade, always apply with a foundation blender brush for that ‘air-brushed’ look
e) Translucent Powder again, applied with Powder Brush and tapped before applying. Think less is more, you don’t want a caked look.
5. Blusher and Bronzer is a must.
6. Take it easy on the shimmer. Highlight on cheek bones and/or brow bone is flattering but too much shimmer doesn’t photograph well
7. Set your lipstick with Karim’s technique:
a) Apply Lipliner over the entire lip area, don’t do outlines
b) Apply Lipstick
c) ‘Kiss’ a tissue to remove excess
d) Apply Translucent Powder Loose with the powder puff
e) Apply Lipstick again
f) Apply a dap of Rose or Cherry Gloss mid bottom lip
8. Consider false lashes rather than mascara for the big day. Individual lashes are more natural looking, but always trial before the wedding day
9. Have a Translucent Powder Compact with you for touch-ups. Oily shine doesn’t photograph well, you need to keep skin matte
10. Keep in mind if you’re wearing white you will need enough colour happening in your make-up to compensate for the whiteness of your dress. Always do a trial run of your make-up wearing white, tee shirt will do, prior to the day.

Radiance Make-up by Karim

Screen Shot 2014-09-03 at 9.51.27 am

Shine with Radiance

The festive season beckons once again. During this special time of year, a woman likes to shine. And a radiant, shimmering make-up puts her in the spotlight for a memorable appearance. It underscores her inner radiance, which glows even brighter than the festive lights, and turns a holiday celebration into a five-star occasion.

This year, the colours of the season are soft, natural and warm. They glimmer and shine, revealing the inner spark that is within every woman – in keeping with the festive spirit. Internationally renowned Dr. Hauschka Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar, has created a vivacious make-up look specifically for such special occasions, dominated by shades of gold, sand and brown accentuated with a delicate rosé. It showcases an even complexion and extremely dramatic, shining eyes. Fresh, gently shimmering lips add a luminous note. He also combines delicate rosé with a hint of ivory for a festive, radiant glow on the cheeks.

Karim Sattar guides you through the steps to create the perfect look for special occasions.

Start with an even complexion

“Ideally, you should start with foundation. Use a foundation brush or a make-up sponge to apply a small amount of Dr. Hauschka Translucent Make-up 00 as a ‘primer’This shade suits almost every skin tone, evens out the complexion, and provides the perfect base for the second nuance of colour that is actually part of the look.

Select the Translucent-Make-up shade that is best for your colouring – Pale Sand (01), Beige Rosé (02), Suntan (03) or Mocca (04). This will enliven your face with a touch of freshness. Follow with Translucent Face Powder Loose to set the make-up, placing a small amount on the powder puff and using it to mattify the face as desired.”

Dramatic eyes

“First use Kajal Eyeliner 04 Soft Brown to highlight the lower lashline and the upper eyelid. Apply the Kajal Eyeliner along the crease of the upper lid, covering about one-third from the outside working inward, as well as along the lower lashline. In addition, use Kajal Eyeliner to fill in the space between the lashline and the crease of the lid and gently smudge it on the upper eyelid up to the crease and on the lower eyelid to the inner corner of the eye.

Next, apply Eyeshadow Solo 04 Taupe to the upper eyelid in the outer corner of the eye and to the lower eyelid, gently smoothing in the eyeshadow.

For sparkling highlights, apply Eyeshadow Solo 01 Golden Sand to the inner part of the upper eyelid and under the eyebrow.

Finally, apply Eyeshadow Solo 02 Golden Earth in the centre of the eyelid to gently blend the colours. For best results, use a blender brush to finish the look.

To strongly accentuate the lashline, use Kajal Eyeliner 04 Soft Brown to draw a line along the edges of the upper and lower eyelids and carefully blend it in. Then apply the white eyeliner from Kajal Eyeliner Duo 01 White/Anthracite to the inner lower eyelid to make the eyes look larger and more alert.

If you want to give the eyes an even more dramatic touch, apply Eyeliner Liquid Brown along the upper lashline. Start at the middle of the upper lashline, first dabbing inward towards the corner of the eye, then turn the brush and work from the middle towards the outside.

Tip: Two layers of Volume Mascara 01 Black add the final polish to this five-star look.

This season, the focus is on the eyebrows

Use a eyebrow brush for shaping, then choose a shade from Dr. Hauschka Eyeshadow Palette 01 that matches your hair colour and apply it to the eyebrows. Colour 02 Mushroom is suitable for lighter hair; for darker hair, I recommend colour 03 Taupe. After applying, use Dr. Hauschka Eye Contour Day Balm to set the colour. This not only showcases the eyebrows, but also hydrates a part of your skin that tends to be dry.

Delicate cheeks that sparkle and shimmer

Apply Rouge Powder 03 Blushing Rosé to the upper cheekbones for a fresh, vibrant look. Achieve shimmering highlights by moistening Eyeshadow Solo 09 Ivory slightly and dabbing it onto the upper cheekbone using a make-up sponge. This gives you a fresh, dewy appearance which will turn heads.

The finishing touch – shining, rosy lips

Outline your lips with Lipliner 03 Soft Rosé. Next, use Lipstick 01 Soft Coral to entirely fill in both lips. For a festive shine, finish the look by applying Lip Gloss 01 Rose to the lips.

Now your radiant, shimmering make-up is complete – guaranteed to put you in the spotlight and make the evening an unforgettable occasion!”

Elegance Make-up by Karim

Dr. Hauschka decorate Cosmetic; Dr. Hauschka Dekorative Kosmetik

We want you to shine, by looking simply elegant and full of self-confidence.

Internationally renowned Dr. Hauschka Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar has developed an elegant make-up look. Karim places a spotlight on our most expressive features, the eyes and the mouth. In addition to an even complexion, the look is dominated by light ivory on the eyelids and black eyeliner around the eyes and volumising black mascara on the lashes. For an expressive contrast Karim uses a warm red on the lips, with lipliner in the same colour providing dynamic accents.

Elegant Make-up

Karim describes each step in achieving the perfect look

Begin with an even complexion “We start with Translucent Make-up 00 Porcelain. This colour serves as a foundation to make the face appear lighter and bring out its radiance. We follow this with Translucent Make-up in a different shade to conceal redness and minor imperfections. Select the colour that best matches your natural skin tone. Concealer 01 can be used to cover up any blemishes or rings under the eyes – it may be helpful to apply it to the entire nose and mouth area as well. To set the creamy make-up, use the powder puff to pat Translucent Face Powder compact evenly onto the face. This results in a more even, balanced complexion and gives you a longer-lasting look.”

Bronzing Powder creates sun-kissed highlightsBronzing Powder adds a sun-kissed warmth to your look. Begin in the middle of the forehead and work your way down to the chin using circular motions – first on one side, then the other. Bronzing Powder is also ideal for adding contours to the face, giving it a more harmonious appearance. If your face is round, for example, you can use the Powder Brush to apply it to the lower cheek area. To determine the right placement, use the cheekbone as your guide and apply the powder about one thumb-width below it. Then, working from the edge of the face inwards, spread the powder as far as the side of your nose.”

A dab of warm red for glowing cheeks “To keep the focus on the eyes and lips, we only apply a touch of rouge. But the cheeks should still have a healthy glow. We achieve this with Rouge Powder 04 soft terracotta for warm toned skin or Rouge Powder 03 blushing rose for a cool toned skin. Starting at the temples, blend it down towards the top of the cheekbones.”

Glamorous eyes

Screen Shot 2014-08-02 at 3.19.42 pm

Karim’s Tip: Use Eyeshadow 09 ivory to apply shimmering highlights to the temples and cheeks.

“This look showcases the eyes, although make-up is only applied to the upper lid. I have selected a pale shade for the lid and dark tones for the contours. Apply Eyeshadow 09 ivory to the entire upper lid, blending it upwards past the lid crease to fade to the brow. Accentuate the crease of the eyelid using 02 light brown from the Dr. Hauschka Eyeshadow palette, applying the colour back and forth in a gentle curve along the crease to create a light shadow. Round off the look using the darkest shade from the Eyeshadow palette, 04 anthracite. Use the Eye Definer Brush to dab this colour along the upper lash line, where it should be followed by Liquid Black Eyeliner. Apply using the Eye Definer Brush starting at the middle of the upper lash line, first dabbing towards the inner corner of the eye and then from the middle towards the outside. Once in place, the eyeshadow serves as a helpful guide for applying Dr. Hauschka Eyeliner Liquid Black. This should now be dabbed over the eyeshadow, first working inwards from the middle and then, after turning the brush, outwards from the middle. Finish by using Eyeliner to draw a curve upwards along the outer lash line. Apply Volume Mascara black to the lashes. Depending on the desired intensity, brush onto the upper lashes up to three times; the lower lashes should only be brushed once lightly. The colours 02 light brown, 03 soft grey and/or 04 anthracite from the Eyeshadow palette can also be used to fill in the eyebrows. Select the shade that best matches your hair colour. Brush the eyeshadow gently into the eyebrows to highlight and shape them.

Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist
Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist

Karim’s Tip: Eye Balm adds an extra sparkle. Simply place a small amount on a brush and work it into the eyebrows.

The finishing touch: warm red on the lips

Screen Shot 2014-08-02 at 3.21.02 pm

“First, use Lipliner 02 warm red to contour the lower lip, then press the lips together firmly. This leaves an impression on the contour of the upper lip that can easily be intensified. Next, fill in the lips completely using Lipliner. This sets the lipstick and lends more depth to its colour. It also keeps the lipstick from running. Now apply Lipstick 04 warm red to the entire lower lip, press the lips together, and apply again to completely cover the lips. Repeat these steps. Next, blot using a tissue, leaving the tissue on the lips and apply powder to the lips using a powder puff. Remove the tissue and repeat the application using the Lip Brush and a fresh application of Lipstick 04.

Karim’s Completion Tip: Use Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner to set your make-up, spraying lightly onto the face from a distance of some 30 centimetres.

Night Out Make-up

festive make-up autumn/winter 2012; Festtags Make-up Herbst/Wint

by Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist

The basics – cleansing first

It is important to cleanse the face before applying make-up – this clarifies the skin and makes the make-up easier to apply. Follow the Dr.Hauschka care regimen by cleansing, toning and moisturising as usual. A moisture-balancing foundation is very important at this cold time of year when the skin is exposed to weather-related stress.

The complexion – the best way to start

Begin with Dr.Hauschka Translucent Make-up. Apply the make-up in the desired shade, followed by Dr.Hauschka Translucent Face Powder loose or compact. This will help the look to last longer. The powder is best applied with a Dr. Hauschka Powder Brush. Before moving on to the eye make-up, apply a small amount of concealer in a colour that matches the skin tone to the inner corner of the eye.

In a blink of the eye

Apply a generous amount of Kajal Eyeliner 05 black along the upper and lower lashlines. For an intensive evening look, apply the eyeliner all the way to the lower inside edge. Now smudge the lines on the upper lid to the brow bone and to the outer corner of the eye. The light, creamy and smudged Kajal Eyeliner helps to keep the eyeshadow in place for longer. When smudging, the eyeliner should therefore be spread over the entire area where eyeshadow will be applied.

Now use a lightly dabbing, rolling motion to apply Eyeshadow 04 Taupe to the outer upper lid and the lower lid over the eyeliner. Smudge the eyeshadow to the inner corner of the eye. Now use the subtly delicate Eyeshadow 09 Ivory to highlight the inner corner of the eye and under the eyebrow, blending well with a brush. Finally, brush the eyelashes with Volume Mascara Black. For a more intense result, apply again twice.

To define the cheeks, apply Rouge Powder 03 Rosé to the upper cheekbones. Place a small amount of Eyeshadow 09 Ivory on a Dr. Hauschka Rouge Brush and use gently circling motions to spread it from the cheek to the outer edge of the face. This will highlight the cheeks giving a rosy shimmer.

Lips – awakened with a kiss

Those who wish to keep their lips well moisturised can apply Dr.Hauschka Lip Balm or Lip Care Stick before putting on lipstick. Then use lightly dabbing motions to apply Lipstick 15 Violet Marble to the lips. This gives a romantic look of having been awakened with a kiss. Those who want to place a stronger emphasis on the lips can follow the lipstick with Lipliner 02 Warm Red.

Extra tip for long-lasting make-up:

Dr.Hauschka Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner are the ideal assistants. Apply a small amount to the face, spraying two or three times after the application of the make-up ensuring a more natural look as a result.

Lip Service

Screen Shot 2014-04-24 at 9.06.27 pm

For some it meant a chance for divinity, for others a reason for divorce or even a risk of death. For lipstick to be triumphant, it truly had to run the gauntlet. In the end though, it won over women’s lips and hearts.

The tradition of lip decoration is an age-old one: the ancient Mesopotamians were the first women to adorn their lips, and did so with crushed gemstones. During excavations in the Sumerian city of Ur, researchers uncovered a kind of lip ointment from 3500 BC. This is the oldest such find to date.

Whether warriors or queens, the ancient Egyptians also decorated their lips to resemble their gods. For upper class Roman and Japanese women, lip colour was even mandatory as it distinguished them from commoners. Conversely, the ancient Greeks saw nothing noble in make-up. In their culture, red lips were also a form of social segregation, but here it was artists and prostitutes who had to wear make-up so that they could be easily distinguished.

While ointments and waxes were initially used, the use of sticks was introduced in the Baroque era. Coloured particles, often acquired from crushed red cochineal insects, were mixed with ground alabaster or plaster to form a paste. This was rolled into shape and dried in the sun. Catherine the Great was even more innovative and chose a brand new kind of beauty regime: the Russian Empress commanded her serving ladies to suck as hard as possible on her lips and lightly bite them. This enhanced their blood circulation and made them look visibly swollen.

Few men could resist sensual lips. In 1770, the British parliament therefore intervened and ruled that women who lured men with red lips and trapped them into marriage were liable to prosecution. All marriages based on such situations could be annulled. During the French Revolution, this beauty regime not only made women liable to prosecution but also put their lives at risk; anyone with red lips was exposed as an aristocrat, with the possible sentence of death by guillotine.

The turning point
100 years later the turning point finally came: in 1883, the lipstick was born. A Parisian perfume manufacturer presented the Stylo d’Armour made from beeswax, castor oil and deer tallow at the world exhibition in Amsterdam. As it was extremely expensive and only wrapped in tissue paper, it was initially ridiculed as a ‘Saucisse’ or little sausage. Despite this, the French actress Sarah Bernhardt openly used the lipstick in public and actively advertised the cosmetic utensil.

In 1948, the lipstick finally gained its practical metal sheath with a slide mechanism and became a basic commodity. After more than 5,500 years, the application of lipstick is today the a make-up ritual that is publicly acceptable everywhere in the world according to rules of etiquette.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Lipstick – Make-up tips from Karim Sattar
What should I consider when applying lipstick?

Smile wherever possible – tightening the lips makes it easier to apply lipstick. I also recommend that you use a lip brush. This is not just for hygiene reasons and more precise application but also because the resulting colour is far more intense.

How should I choose a shade of lipstick?
The fabulous thing about Dr. Hauschka lipsticks is that they look different on different people. That means that even if your best friend is wearing the same lipstick as you, the colour will appear different. Lipsticks can therefore be freely selected to meet your taste or match accessories such as jewellery, a handbag or a scarf.

How can I achieve longer lasting lip colour?
Apply the lipliner and lipstick as usual then press a tissue between your lips. Next, use a powder pad to dab your lips with Translucent Face Powder loose then reapply the lip products.
