During my baby building stages and for the baby/toddler early years Rose Day Cream nurtured more than just my skin. Keeping up with my daily Dr. Hauschka rituals was my special moment at the beginning and at the end of each day. When applying Rose Day Cream in the morning I would always cup the warmed cream in the palms of my hands around my nose first and take a moment to deeply smell the aromas of organic and biodynamic roses to nurture me. I also remember thinking it felt good knowing when I cuddled my babies that they were only receiving residual Rose Day Cream from my face.

Although I was already a long term Dr. Hauschka customer, this was a time that became a catalyst to change in many areas of habitual shopping. Basically getting rid of all unnecessary chemicals from us, our home, the laundry etc.

During pregnancy body care is particularly important to keep the skin supple, Dr. Hauschka Blackthorn Toning Body Oil supports the skin’s elasticity in weight loss or weigh gain and helps to prevent the appearance of stretch marks. I used Blackthorn Toning Body Oil from 25 weeks while skin was still moist after my morning shower. It’s formula is based on plant extracts, with only a minute amount of essential oils for fragrance. It did the trick! I think we forged an everlasting friendship at that time. I still reach for Blackthorn Toning Body Oil, particularly in autumn and winter when I need it strengthening more than toning effect.

Rose Nurturing Body Cream to keep skin supple, Rose Nurturing Body Oil too, it’s just a matter of personal preference or mix the Oil with the Body Cream for a more intense aromatic experience.

Moor Lavender Calming Body Oil relaxes, soothes and encourages sleep.

Rose Nurturing Bath Essence gives a Cleopatra moment, exotic and nurturing at the same time, in the bath or in your Compress & Hydrate basin water pre facial cleansing. Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence aids relaxation. Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence to refresh and revitalise.

Quince Hydrating Body Milk gives the skin a fresh, firm feeling during pregnancy, as does Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Milk.

Rapidly tiring and swelling legs in the latter stages of pregnancy gain support from Revitalising Leg & Arm Tonic.

A protective cocoon for the child

Only the best is good enough for a child’s tender skin. The rich Dr.Hauschka creams and oils nurture their sensitive skin and envelop the child in a warming and protective cocoon. For the youngest, this warming protection is very important, as they can get cold quickly.

Babies really only need to be bathed in warm water and a muslin cloth; however, Dr.Hauschka Rose Nurturing Body Wash with such gentle ingredients from nature is for cleansing if needed.

Our Silk Body Powder containing real silk powder has to be the most exquisite and caring baby body powder there is! Created by combining fine Silk powder, which has anti-bacterial properties and is particularly well tolerated by baby’s skin, Rice starch, Silica and extracts of Gentian, Oak and Sage. Silk Body Powder does wonders for preventing the appearance of nappy rash. In my personal experience, Silk Body Powder was the ONLY product that worked for my daughter’s predisposition to nappy rash.

Your facial skin care during pregnancy and post natal

Your skin may go through changes as your body has to metabolise hugely increased hormone levels and for many as the baby takes so many nutrients their skin becomes incredibly dry.   Some new Mums will experience break outs, while others find their skin becomes parched dry.

After having my son my skin quite literally went to the pack. It became sore, dry, itchy – awful really. At the time I thought it was due to the fact that he was such a rapacious baby, leaving me short in skin nutrients. Remembering my knowledge, despite chronic lack of sleep and therefore brain fade, I reached for a 28 night treatment of Renewing Night Conditioner which is recommended for any times of transition and post natal certainly is that! Incredibly problem was solved within 4 nights.

Please contact us if you feel you may need to alter your usual Dr. Hauschka skin regime to address a changing skin condition.  We’re always happy to put together a recommended Product Prescription and Skin Care Regime for you. We received the below from a Dr. Hauschka customer recently…

“I have used Dr. Hauschka for over 10 years and it’s always worked well for me. When I was expecting our first child last July I looked to see if Dr. Hauschka did a baby range (I’d never needed to look for it before) and  there isn’t. Fortunately, I found several articles with a list of the Dr. Hauschka products I could use on bub so they were placed on my gift list.

The paediatric nurse gave me a tube of D****** with steroids for baby’s face which had acne and the skin was literally peeling off, including inside and behind her ears. I decided to try the Rose Day Cream on her face. I was using it as a nappy change cream. I was concerned it would be too strong for her face but it wasn’t. To my surprise within HOURS patches of dryness had disappeared and within 3 days her skin was once again blooming. I applied it religiously at every nappy change and bub started to smile as I smeared it over her face. At our next weekly visit to the paediatric nurse she was surprised at how much her skin had improved. I told her what I had used and offered her the D****** cream back. Interestingly, the nurse also uses Dr. Hauschka so I am hopeful that she will now recommend parents try Rose Day Cream rather than administering free samples of D******. Within 2 weeks my baby’s skin was completely free of any dryness and acne and has remained so although I no longer use any cream on her skin. She has had perfect skin for 2 months. My tube of Rose Day Cream lasted for 4 months using it as a nappy change cream intermittently (perhaps 5 times per week when redness started to appear but was not sore) and a solid 2 weeks on her face and ears (6-7 times per day). I consider this very good value.

Why am I telling you all this?

Because it’s the sort of information I would have loved to read when I was pregnant and looking for a suitable baby product range. I also use the Moor Lavender Calming Body Oil in her bath. The time frame to cure dry skin, how often it is applied and the expected cost per year are all considerations. The message I have is it’s not expensive to use Rose Day Cream as your primary baby cream. It works and works quickly so little is required. And of course, the most important thing is not subjecting your bundle of joy to those nasties, particularly steroids! And of course, she smells as sweet as a rose 🙂

There’s a lot of organic alternatives out there these days and yes, I have some on my change table that were given as gifts, but I have tried them once and didn’t like the feel of them. I also noticed the redness didn’t disappear after one application, unlike when I use Rose Day Cream.”

Nappy rash problem sorted, email from another happy customer…

“Our 9 month old typically cheerful baby girl had been suffering with nappy rash. It flared up very badly and our little girl was in pain. I consulted our family doctor and was prescribed a mild hydrocortisone to be applied topped with heavy aqueous cream and then thick barrier cream. We were also advised as much ‘nappy off’ time as possible to allow the skin to dry out. The full tube of hydrocortisone was used and the rash had not gone. I was beside myself to see my baby in such pain and felt uneasy about continuing to use steroid creams on such delicate skin. Plus the concept of drying the skin out whilst glooping it in three layers of creams just wasn’t making sense. Having worked with Dr. Hauschka in the past I felt sure there would be something in the range that may help. Silk Body Powder was our saviour! I set aside all the creams and applied just this beautiful powder and the result was almost instant. It dried her skin completely and the raw skin looked immediately less red and soothed. Within a week of use with every nappy change my little girl’s skin was healed. I recommend this product 100%. It’s simply amazing.”

In pregnancy and beyond remember you also require fresh, nutritious food and get plenty of sleep while you can.

As the kids grew I kept finding new uses for Dr. Hauschka products. For minor scratches and scrapes a quick spritz of Clarifying Toner which contains anti-bacterial Echinacea and anti-inflammatory Daisy. I’m a fan of all our Bath Essences and as I used to read to the kids while they were in the bath I also enjoyed the aromatics. The odd patch of dry skin sorted with Rose Day CreamSage Purifying Bath Essence foot bath and Deodorising Foot Cream came to our aid when my daughter picked up ‘something’ on her feet after a session at the swimming pool and both kids love After Sun applied during beach holidays to keep their skin cool and soothed, the aroma is now reminiscent of holidays for them.

Blackthorn is mainly made from plant extracts with only a minute amount of plant essential oils for aroma.  The scent is neither overly feminine or masculine and suits the active, professional, no-nonsense personality.

For me, personally, wearing Blackthorn Body Oil helps give me more focus when productivity is required and I also find it imparts a sense of strength and vitality.  It also happens to be the Body Oil that I receive “love your perfume” compliments at my morning coffee stop!

Tip: A winning, strengthening and toning partnership is Blackthorn Body Oil mixed with Lemon Lemongrass Body Moisturiser and applied to skin still slightly moist from the shower, for even and economical application.

Blackthorn Body Oil description:

Supple, toned skin depends upon skin elasticity. Blackthorn Body Oil offers strengthening, warming skin care for all the family. It has even proved successful during pregnancy when it is particularly important to keep skin supple to prevent pregnancy-induced stretch marks.

Blackthorn blossom and birch leaf extracts enhance skin elasticity while sun-drenched St. John’s wort and jojoba oil support the skin’s natural processes of renewal and fortification.

Formulation: Blackthorn blossoms, birch leaves and St. John’s wort are combined with sunflower oil, then carefully blended using unique rhythmic processing methods. During this phase, the mixtures are heated to 37 °C – human body temperature. They are carefully mixed in the mornings and evenings to allow the properties of the nurturing plants to be transferred to the oil.

Blackthorn prunus-spinosa

Blackthorn

Synonyms: Sloe, Sloe Berry
Scientific Name: Prunus spinosa
Family: Rosacea

Habitat
Blackthorn was originally a native of central Europe. Thanks to its hardiness it has become widespread and is now found from southern Sweden to the Urals, and in the moderate zones of Southwest Asia, North Africa and North America.

Constituents
Flavonoid glycosides, coumarin derivatives, tannins and bitter substances, acids, vitamin C, traces of amygdalin (cyanogenic glycoside)

Description
The dense, spreading, much-branched thorny shrub, which can reach a height of up to 3 m (9 feet), flowers from March to April in the European spring. The small white scented flowers appear before the leaves. They are usually solitary, on short stems, but cover the entire length of the branches so densely that the whole shrub is shrouded in white. In May, after the flowers, the oval, tooth-edged leaves appear, and in late summer the bluish-black plum-like fruits which have a whitish bloom and astringent green flesh. They are 1 cm in diameter, contain a stone and are only edible after the frost. The thorns, incidentally, are transformed lateral branchlets.

Blackthorn berries
Blackthorn berries

Blackthorn likes sunny hills and dry, sparse deciduous woods with chalky, deep soil. Together with other members of the rose family it often forms impenetrable thorny thickets. The light-loving blackthorn is extremely resistant to pests and regenerates quickly after cutting. It can colonise shallow soil quickly and spreads through seed dispersal by mammals and birds and by production of root suckers. Even on wind-exposed sites it defies the natural forces. So it is not surprising that it was used as pioneer wood for stabilising embankments and dry slopes and for landscaping slag heaps and wasteland, as well as for wind and snow screens. With its high value as honey plant, too, blackthorn emerges as something of an ideal shrub.

Today the fruits of the blackthorn are still used to brew warming drinks for harsh winter evenings: sloe wine and sloe gin make you feel cozy indoors while winter rages outside. Syrups, jellies and jams are also a vitamin-rich delicacy.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Early in the spring, even before the young shoots and leaves begin to sprout, the blackthorn envelops itself in a radiant white mass of blossoms. But it is not until late in the year, when the first frosts herald the coming of winter, that the fruits ripen and become sweet. Thus, the blackthorn only hesitantly divulges its vital powers, keeps them in a certain inwardness. The flowers which have gone through the winter help the human organism to overcome the winter and to adapt its metabolism to the spring.

The vitality-bearing fruits provide strength in states of exhaustion. Elixirs of the fruit were made for use during convalescence.

Dr.Hauschka Blackthorn Body Oil strengthens and warms the skin. With its pleasant fragrance, the harmonious composition of blackthorn blossom, birch leaves and St. John’swort firms and purifies the tissues. The skin-strengthening properties give the skin a fresh, moisturised appearance.

Gently prepared oil extracts from blackthorn blossom unfold their conditioning properties in Dr.Hauschka Hand Cream, Lemon Lemongrass Body Moisturiser and Quince Body Moisturiser, too. Fully ripe blackthorn fruits harvested in the wild are carefully processed to essences which round off the composition of Lemon Lemongrass Body Moisturiser, Quince Body Moisturiser and Deodorant Fresh.

Your facial skin care during pregnancy

Your skin may go through changes as your body deals with such a huge increase in hormones.  Many will experience break outs, while others find their skin becomes incredibly dry.

Thinking about the home environment

Bringing a baby into the world is a catalyst for many changes.  It’s an excellent time to remove the huge amount of synthetic chemical overload in our homes and on our bodies; to leave behind all the conventional synthetic chemical skin, perfume, hair and body products, cleaning and laundry products.  Visit Helios Health Australia – there’s always another alternative, superior too, in my experience.

Pregnant and in good health

At no other time does an individual enter into such a close relationship with another person as during pregnancy. But as the pregnant woman’s body adapts to fully meeting the needs of the growing child, this can lead to physical discomfort. In our interview, Manuela Burkhardt, WALA (Dr. Hauschka) contact person for midwives and herself a trained midwife, gives tips on how expectant mothers can find relief in such cases.

As a midwife you have already guided many women through their pregnancy. Are there different ‘phases’ that every pregnant woman goes through during the nine months?

Each woman’s experience of pregnancy is different. However, one can divide the course of pregnancy roughly into three phases, each of which last about three months: the phase of adjustment, the phase of wellbeing and the phase of burden.

What happens in the first phase, the phase of adjustment?

In the first three months it is not usually obvious that the woman is pregnant, and most of the changes are hidden from view. During this time the body is already starting to adjust to nurturing another human being – this is why we call it the phase of adjustment. The hormone status changes, fatty deposits in the breasts are built up and the metabolism goes into overdrive. Although there is nothing to see on the outside, the woman may already be suffering diverse complaints – nausea, sickness and tiredness. Mood swings are also quite common and completely normal.

Fussmassage bei Schwangerer; Pregnant woman doing foot massage

How can affected women alleviate these complaints?

Nausea is among the most troublesome complaints during pregnancy. Due to the hormonal changes they undergo, some mums-to-be feel nauseous a lot. A regular daily routine, several small meals and walking in the fresh air can also help. Hosing the legs with cold water in the morning will also help stimulate the overtaxed circulation.

But at some point the female body adjusts to being pregnant…

Yes, fortunately. The middle three months are the best phase of pregnancy – this is the “phase of wellbeing”. The body has adjusted to the new situation and the woman is in harmony with her child. The abdomen starts to grow gradually and the first movements of the baby can be felt. The only downside: during this phase the first stretch marks can start to appear on the belly and the thighs. However, a daily pinching massage can help stop these stretch marks forming (see instructions in the information box below).

WALA medicine; WALA Arzneimittel

And after these middle three months, what can the pregnant woman expect then? Is the phase of wellbeing over?

Well, I wouldn’t say that exactly. But the last three months are considerably more tiring. The expectant mother is getting bulkier and the child pushes up on her diaphragm, making it more difficult for her to breathe. The pregnancy now becomes an increasing burden and the woman tires easily. During this phase many women also suffer from back pains and muscle tension; walking and standing become harder.

What can the expectant mother do to help herself?

Massages can alleviate the complaints caused by her increasing girth and weight. In the case of heavy, swollen legs it can be helpful to lessen the congestion by stimulating the flow of venous blood back to the heart. For this the mum-to-be should massage her legs daily with a brush, working from the toes upwards towards the thighs, or she can hose her legs with alternating warm and cold water.

As her due date approaches, what can the expectant mother do to prepare herself for the birth?

It helps a lot if she can keep calm and look forward to the event with positive feelings. Of course it is absolutely essential to have a bag packed and ready for the hospital – that’s a great help in calming the nerves. And then life with the little newcomer is all set to start smoothly.

Pinching massage
Pinching massage

Tip: Pinching massage to reduce the appearance of stretch marks

Use Dr. Hauschka Blackthorn Toning Body Oil for the pinching massage. The combination of massage and oil thoroughly warms the skin, leaving it better supplied with blood and therefore more elastic. For a pinching massage, take the top layer of skin between thumb and forefinger, lift it up slightly and then let go again. For best results repeat the process five times for each section of skin.
