How do you know what’s really authentic natural and organic skin care?

Natural Organic Skin Care

The difference made transparent

What percentage of the ingredients in natural cosmetics are organic? What are the minimum standards and the maximum values?

Furthermore, how can you describe the high quality of a product other than through its material properties – its finely tuned composition, its more than biochemical effect?

We don’t think ‘natural enough’ is good enough for your skin. Only the very best, highest quality, natural and organic ingredients for long term results and healthy, radiant skin.

from www.natrue.org

Our entire skin care and make-up range is certified with the international quality seal for natural and organic skin care and make-up – NATRUE.

The NATRUE standard distinguishes between:

  1. Natural skin care and make-up
  2. Natural skin care and make-up with at least 70% organic ingredients
  3. Natural skin care and make-up with at least 95% organic ingredients

This makes it interesting as the term ‘natural skin care and make-up’ alone is neither legally protected nor defined on a binding basis. At www.natrue.org, you can find the certifications given to the individual Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Make-up products for complete consumer transparency.

Go to Brand Directory Dr. Hauschka and click on the product image below. For example when you check Rose Day Cream you’ll see it’s certified to Level 3 – Natural skin care with at least 95% organic (and/or biodynamic) ingredients.

Please note: We have a preference for biodynamic ingredients, these are classed as ‘organic’ ingredients for certification.

Look for the NATRUE label for your consumer guarantee that products are genuinely natural and organic. NATRUE certifies the entire product formula, not just one or two ingredients in that formula. Furthermore the entire formula is completely audited from supplier to finished product once every two years. Wherever available, we procure our ingredients from biodynamic or controlled organic farming. If an organic version of a raw material is not yet available on the global market, we initiate organic cultivation partnership projects.

You can count on our products being free from synthetic chemical fragrances, dyes and preservatives, mineral oils, parabens, silicones and PEGs.

We do not, or ever have, or outsourced, any testing on animals, we test on happy to help out human volunteers.

There is more to quality than good raw materials

Our formulas depend on the high quality of the natural raw materials – but also on the care with which they were grown and processed. By using biodynamic agriculture, we actually put more into the soil than we take out. We believe biodynamically grown plants are the highest in vitality and it’s this vitality we wish to transform for your skin.

In Dr.Hauschka skin care and make-up, the ingredients come together to form complex compositions made up of more than just the sum of their components. Only when their ingredients interact and are supported by our unique rhythmic manufacturing procedure do our products take on their very special quality that enables them to stimulate your skin’s natural activity.

Plant Profile: Anthyllis

Screen Shot 2015-07-21 at 9.21.20 am

Scientific Name: Anthyllis vulneraria L.
Family: Pea family (Leguminosae/Fabaceae)
AKA: Woundwort, Kidney Vetch

Habitat
Anthyllis is a native of Southern Europe but is now found throughout the whole of Europe, Western Asia, North Africa and America.

Constituents
Small amounts of saponins and tannins, xanthophyll, organic pigments.

Description
From the distance you think you are looking at a sea of yellowish-orange flowerheads hovering over richly green pinnate leaf rosettes. A closer look reveals that the flowers are actually yellow and turn orange-brown as they fade. Anthyllis can reach a height of 15 to 35 cm (6 to 14 inches). The stems are frequently prostrate but also often raise themselves upwards presenting to the onlooker the dense clusters of yellow papillonaceous flowers which can be seen from April to June. A striking feature of the plant is that all parts are softly hairy. The chalk-loving plant is found on untilled fields and clover fields, by the wayside and on sunny slopes but never where the soil is overfertilized. A special feature of Anthyllis is the marked variability of its appearance depending on the site, an expression of its pronounced adaptability.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kometik

Uses
As the specific name vulneraria (Vulnus = wound) indicates, Anthyllis is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of wounds. It is also sometimes used in cough-relieving teas, in the treatment of frostbite and sore throat and for blood cleansing. It generally promotes the elimination processes of the body.

Interesting Facts
The scientific name of the plant is derived from its appearance and use: anthos = flower, ioulos = down and vulnus = wound together give a softly hairy flowering plant used for the treatment of wounds. The common name derives from the fact that the plant was also used for the treatment of kidney troubles.

Anthyllis probably only gained significance in Germany in the course of the 16th century and was valued in traditional medicine for the treatment of wounds.

The plant from another perspective
The vigorous upward and spreading growth of Anthyllis is the expression of its strong vegetative power. It is this power that strengthens the injured human organism. However, Anthyllis does not grow rampant but with refined culture. The power that fortifies the wound healing process is therefore not uncontrolled, but balanced and finely regulating. The plant’s polymorphism is also an expression of its regulating power.

In the same way as it adapts itself to different external circumstances, Anthyllis also helps different skin conditions to develop in the direction of a balanced, healthy skin. The balanced growth of the plant, which is at the same time an expression of the balance between building-up and breaking-down processes, is transferred to the skin, strengthening its resistance to destructive environmental influences and slowing down the ageing process. The balancing of the building-up and breaking-down processes in the stratum corneum (outermost layer of the skin) also refines the skin and makes it noticeably softer.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

The plant in our products
On account of its positive influence on the skin, Anthyllis is one of the key plants in Dr.Hauschka Skin Care and is contained in many of the face care products and make-up products. In summary, it provides a balanced combination of two important components of skin function:

A form-giving, firming and perfusion-promoting component and
a gland-strengthening component

Elisabeth Sigmund – Chapter 5

Screen Shot 2015-03-26 at 9.38.58 am

Medical studies and deciding on a career in cosmetics

In addition to being involved in theatre, aesthetics and nurturing plants, Elisabeth Sigmund was also interested in medicine. She discovered this interest while on holiday with her family in Waidhofen an der Thaya (Lower Austria) in 1927. During their stay, she accompanied the local priest, Father Eßmeister, on his visits to remote, impoverished farms in his parish and helped him provide medical care to the cottagers (small farmers) who lived there. The experiences left her feeling so fulfilled that she wanted to become a doctor.

After training to be a Red Cross nurse in 1933/34, Elisabeth Sigmund studied medicine for two semesters at the University of Vienna before having to take time out as a result of illness. During this enforced interruption to her studies and after reading Rudolf Steiner’s paper “The Arts and their Mission”, she decided to become a cosmetician. Steiner said that a thing of beauty is something that reveals its inner being in its outer appearance (GA 276)*. With the help of these words, Elisabeth Sigmund’s love of both nourishing plants and aesthetics came together to form the passion for cosmetics that shaped her life.

Autodidactic cosmetics studies
From then on, Elisabeth Sigmund only attended selected medical lectures at university and began to devise her own cosmetics studies. There was no independent training to become a cosmetician. She attended courses at large cosmetics firms and worked at the Vienna cosmetics institute, Pessl, where she discovered all of the disadvantages of conventional treatments. She observed how facial massages weaken the facial muscles and how cleansing the skin with Vaseline (petrochemicals) blocks the pores. She realised that it was time to start creating her own skin care products based on nurturing plants.

Elisabeth Sigmund gained great knowledge of nurturing plants with an effect on the skin by reading the chapters on skin diseases in old medical books. She obtained the medical books from the Vienna university and national library, where her uncle, Edmund Pribik assisted her greatly. As a library employee he was able to pick out books that were not normally available to the public. She also visited the libraries of many convents where old medical books were simply gathering dust at the time. In the years leading up to 1939, she also completed a course in a Paris cosmetics laboratory in order to learn the trade of cosmetics development.

But what did Elisabeth Sigmund’s mother think of all this? She was extremely unhappy with the new path that her daughter had taken. Back then, for a girl from a good family to become a cosmetician was considered improper. As such, Elisabeth Sigmund was not allowed to mention to the profession she wished to pursue to her mother’s friends or acquaintances. But this did not stop her from following her dream.

Screen Shot 2015-03-26 at 10.02.08 am

Once Elisabeth Sigmund had decided on a career in cosmetics, she created her first serious cosmetic preparation: a face lotion based on a strong daisy tea that she made herself. She chose daisies because she found these meadow flowers described in a medical volume as a nourishing plant for women and for beautiful skin. With a little alcohol added, the tea improved her skin, which tended towards impurity at the time. Elisabeth Sigmund later expanded on this face lotion with other nurturing plants to create Dr. Hauschka Clarifying Toner. Daisy and nasturtium minimise the appearance of blackheads and blemishes, visibly refine pores and reduce excessive oiliness. Anthyllis balances skin for a calm, even appearance.

“All of my attempts at creating skin care products were always motivated by an interest in finding the plants that are good for and have a quasi healing effect on the skin.”

Which Moisturiser is right for you?

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 5.03.19 pmScreen Shot 2015-02-23 at 2.11.37 pm

IMPORTANT – How to use our Moisturisers
Our moisturisers are highly concentrated, they’re formulated specifically to be applied as follows:

1) Apply in the morning after Cleansing Cream and Toner
2) Place approximately a large pea size of Day Cream in the palm of your hand (or in the case of Clarifying Day Oil 2-3 drops)
3) Warm to melt the waxes and oils between the palms of both hands
4) Apply to skin that’s still moist from Toner, to ensure even and economical application, using the palms of both hands
5) Apply from centre of the face outwards in direction of lymph flow

In the evening after Cleansing Milk and Toning no moisturiser is needed as heavy, occlusive night creams disrupt the elimination and regeneration functions of the skin overnight.

Why is there no Dr.Hauschka night cream?

The Dr. Hauschka oil-free night care regime supports the nocturnal metabolism of the skin because this is the time when this activity is at its maximum. Instead of burdening the natural elimination processes with oily skin care products, the Dr. Hauschka night care programme consists of products containing stimulating and regenerating plant essences. These allow the skin to breathe freely and overcome any weaknesses and imbalances. Healthy and beautiful skin is the result.

Dr. Hauschka Treatment products for the night are:
– Basic Night Care: Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner and Regenerating Serum (if appropriate to support a maturing skin)
– OR Intensive 30 night treatment: Renewing Night Conditioner or Sensitive Care Conditioner or one of our Intensive Treatments for specific skin concerns

Rule of thumb to keep it simple:
Use Conditioner in Spring (September) and Autumn (March)
Use Intensive Treatment in Summer (December) and Winter (June)
In between use Toner (and Regenerating Serum if appropriate)

However, ideally Conditioners should be used once per year per 10 years of life, e.g. if 30 years old do 3 Conditioner 28 day treatments per year.

All Toners are not created equal!

Screen Shot 2013-10-15 at 10.26.58 AM

Our Toners are not to be used on cotton pads, they are hydrating treatment products containing active botanicals and are different from a conventional toner. Conventional toners are used on cotton wool (which absorbs a huge amount of product by the way) to remove residual cleansing product.

Use: Close your eyes and mist directly onto skin after cleansing.

Toning should stimulate and support the life process of the skin, making it strong and vibrant. When this is the case, you want your toner to be left on the skin.

Active medicinal plant extracts in the toner can then get to work.

Benefits:

  • Our Day Dare products, (Moisturisers and Normalising Day Oil), are all highly concentrated and are specifically designed to be applied to skin still moist from toner, this means you use your Day Care in an even and economical way
  • Toner also helps to facilitate absorption of your Day Care
  • Hydrate your skin
  • Stimulate the skin’s own moisturising processes
  • Improve the elasticity of the pore walls
  • Regulate the oil production in the skin
  • Help to support a healthy, balanced skin
  • Our Toners are not drying to the skin

At night, our Toner’s active ingredients support the night-time functions of elimination and renewal. The skin’s own moisturising processes are stimulated and strong and elastic pores mean the efficient expulsion of excretions and wastes.

There are two Dr. Hauschka Toners:
Facial Toner for normal or dry skin conditions, all skin conditions may use though
Clarifying Toner for oily and sensitive, combination skin conditions.

Clarifying Toner contains Echinacea for its anti-bacterial properties and Daisy for its anti-inflammatory benefits, soothing and calming. This preparation is also ideal as a soothing after-shave for men. Facial Toner contains Witch Hazel for its astringent properties and one of our key ingredients, balancing Anthyllis.

Tips:

Hydrate your skin with our Toner at any time. We keep a bottle in our desk to hydrate our skin during the day, especially in the warmer months and in dehydrating air conditioning.

‘Set’ your make-up by misting Toner, gives a more dewy look too.

Doing things differently…

Screen Shot 2013-10-10 at 4.18.38 PM

There’s some common questions that regularly feature for both new and existing customers. We do do things differently from the way you are likely to have been taught with conventional products.

It’s important to our team here at Dr. Hauschka Australia that you are getting the most beneficial results from your Products and our Daily Rituals and here’s how…

Screen_Shot_2013_10_15_at_10.21.29_AM

1) Cleansing
We have two cleansers for your daily cleansing needs.
Why? Because your skin has differing cleansing requirements at each end of the day.

Cleansing Cream gently deep cleanses after the night time elimination activity of your skin and also prepares your skin for day time protection.

How to use:
a) Mix with water to create an emulsion, not a paste
b) Cleanse with our gentle ‘Press and Roll’ technique, do not a scrub.

See our Morning Ritual Video

Cleansing Milk is your make-up and eye make-up remover plus it cleans your skin from the dirt and dust it picks up during the day. Gentle and effective cleansing that does not disrupt the skin’s acid mantle and therefore supports our no night cream stance.

Screen Shot 2013-10-30 at 1.18.32 PM

2) Toners

Our Toners are not to be used on cotton pads, they are hydrating treatment products containing active botanicals and are different from a conventional toner.

Use: Close your eyes and mist directly onto skin.

Conventional toners are used on cotton wool (which absorbs a huge amount of product by the way) to remove residual cleansing product.

Clarifying Toner contains Echinacea for its anti-bacterial properties and Daisy for its anti-inflammatory benefits. Facial Toner contains Witch Hazel for its astringent properties and one of our key ingredients, balancing Anthyllis.

Tip: Hydrate your skin with our Toner at any time. We keep a bottle in our desk to hydrate our skin during the day.

3) Doing it differently with day care
We only need to use a small amount of Day Care because our formulas are all so concentrated, for instance there’s 30 organic or biodynamic roses in every tube of Rose Day Cream!

How to use:
a) Warm a large pea size between the palms of your hands to melt the plant waxes
b) Apply using the entirety of your palms from the centre of the face outwards in the direction of lymph flow
c) Apply to skin still moist from Toner to ensure even and economical application

Please note: If you didn’t apply in this manner you would think Rose Day Cream, particularly, is way too thick and you would ‘overuse’ it.

Screen Shot 2013-10-15 at 10.40.09 AM

4) No Night Cream

Your skin metabolises and eliminates during the night time. Think of it as your skin needing to ‘breathe’. Using oil free night care supports this process. One month, a skin cell cycle, and you won’t need any more convincing!

Tips:
a) If you feel your skin needs a ‘little more’ mist your Toner a second time in the evening.
b) Cleanse early in the evening, apply Moisturising Mask, removing prior to bedtime if you feel your skin is going through a stage of needing more moisture.

Night time products:

a) Toner
b) Toner and Regenerating Serum
c) Instead of Toner in the evening, Rhythmic Conditioners for a 30 night treatment. Skin cell cycle is 28-30 days.
d) Instead of Toner, Intensive Treatment 01, 02, 03, 04 or 05 as a complete treatment product in the one bottle and used in the morning and evening.

“I am only a couple of weeks into the ‘no night cream’ regime, I’m using Toner and Serum, and it has been the biggest shock to realise that I don’t need heavy night creams. My skin looks great in the mornings and my eyes haven’t been ‘puffy’. I should have done this much, much earlier.”
Susan

Screen_Shot_2013_10_15_at_10.35.03_AM

5) Colour and Care
As your skin improves, to that typical Dr. Hauschka healthy and radiant skin, you should need less Translucent Make-up but if you do need more coverage initially, use a double application of Translucent Make-up.

Tip: Always ‘set’ your make-up with Translucent Powder Loose or Translucent Powder Compact, alternatively my favourite at the moment is Illuminating Powder which gives an instant uplift to your complexion. You’ll really notice this clever powder in photos, as the light reflects off the subtle luminosity.
