Plant Profile: St. John’s wort

Screen Shot 2014-03-07 at 12.36.32 pm

St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)

If you hold St. John’s wort flowers up to the light you will see numerous small bright spots, these are glands containing a fluid of essential oils and resin. If you rub the golden yellow flowers between your fingers they will be stained blood red, the characteristic colour of St. John’s wort oil. This wondrous colour change results from the fact that light and oxygen break down constituents of the flowers. The perennial St. John’s wort plant grows to a height of 90 cm. Over summer the many branched, woody stems are covered over and over with the five-rayed flowers. This oil-rich plant, whose leaves are also densely covered with oil glands, prefers full sunlight which it requires for luxuriant growth.

Paracelsus was convinced of the wound-healing, antiseptic and eliminating action of St. John’s wort. He saw the pore-like perforation of the leaves as an indication that the plant could be used to treat any kinds of opening in the skin, either internally or internally, and that it would also support elimination through the pores.

In fact, St. John’s Wort stimulates the blood circulation and carries anabolic and nourishing processes to the sphere of the nerves and the senses.

With its calming, pain relieving and wound healing properties it brings relief not only in chapped, cracked and irritated skin accompanied by redness but also in mild burns. Embrocations with the characteristic red oil help relieve nerve pain, rheumatism, lumbago and sprains. St. John’s wort is used internally for treatment of depression.

There are numerous legends attached to St. John’s wort. According to one it originates from the blood of John the Baptist, according to another St. John the Evangelist is said to have gathered the plant drenched in the Saviour’s blood from beneath the cross. The naming of the plant St. John’s wort was supported particularly by the fact that the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, whose patron saint is John the Baptist, already used the plant for treatment of wounds at the time of the Crusades.

St. John’s wort, one of the magical plants of the summer solstice, devoting itself to the sun like no other plant. It is said to have the greatest healing powers at the Feast of St. John, three days after midsummer night in the Northern Hemisphere, when it is at the height of its bloom and is imbued with the full power of the summer sun. At this time the light has reached its climax and the sun joins in matrimony with the earth. Since time immemorial people have honoured this day of union between the light and the earth, between spirit and matter, with great feasts. A remnant of this tradition can still be seen today in Europe with the bonfires lit on midsummer’s night.

The plant ingredient at Dr. Hauschka

The radiant yellow flowers of St. John’s wort which stretch up towards the sun on straight stems, contain the highest concentration of active constituents at the time of the summer solstice. This seems to be an expression of its sunlike character. The luxuriant wealth of flowers contrasts starkly with the dry, hard wood of the plant. That which is between the flower and the branch shows a tendency to contract, to dry. This is the expression of a forming character which brings order to that which is excessively in flux.

This is the field of tension in which we find the numerous healing effects of this old medicinal plant. As plant of the light it drives away the darkness in human beings, and thus helps internally in depression, externally in sunburn. As bringer of order it supports the organism in all anabolic processes of the nerve-sense organs, whether as wound-healing agent or in treatment of depression.

In Dr. Hauschka skin care products St. John’s wort is found wherever, in addition to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action, soothing and strengthening of the skin is desired: Rose Day CreamRevitalising Day CreamTinted Day CreamClarifying Day Oil, Cleansing Cream, Almond St. John’s wort Soothing Body Oil, Almond Soothing Body Cream, Blackthorn Toning Body Oil, Lip Balm and Eye Balm. In Hydrating Foot Cream it brings light to the feet which in our culture are usually condemned to a shadowy existence enclosed in shoes.

Three-fold Nature of Human Beings, Plants and the Skin

Dr. Hauschka Moisturisers each have their own leading plant, which gives them their distinctive character, as individual as your skin.

The philosophical approach behind Dr. Hauschka Skin Care is Anthroposophy, meaning ‘wisdom of man/woman’.

Philosopher and natural scientist Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s work is not for the faint hearted, however, it’s interesting to have an understanding of how this relates to the development of product formulations and the efficacy of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care preparations. Through close observation of plants in their natural environments Steiner explored the relationship between plants and people. His work revealed the healing qualities of specific plants and showed how each of their three parts is symbiotic with the human body and skin; the body’s largest organ. This concept he named ‘three-fold’.

Three parts to people

According to the three-fold image, the human being is made up of three core systems: the nerve-sense, the rhythmic and the metabolic-limb.

Three parts to plants

Like humans, plants have their own three-fold system. For a plant, however, the system is turned upside down. While in a human the nerve-sense system is found in the head, in a plant, it’s in the roots, the other way around. The metabolic-limb system is at the top of a plant in its flowers, fruits and seeds. At the centre of a plant, the stem and leaves is the rhythmic system.

Three parts to skin

Skin has three layers; the epidermis (top layer), dermis (mid layer) and subcutaneous or hypodermis (3rd and deepest layer). You would have heard of the term ‘third degree burns’, meaning all three layers of the skin.

Making a difference

Real health and beauty come from the inside and the outside. In its natural state, the skin is healthy and balanced. However skin condition can easily be compromised when other factors come into play; such as internal and external environmental issues, lifestyle, hormonal issues, transitions or stress. Peace of mind is beneficial for the skin as is adequate sleep, nutritious food, fresh air and exercise.

Negative effects on the skin may result in acne/ blemishes, inflammation, dry and/or dehydrated skin, premature wrinkles or simply a complexion that lacks health and radiance. At this point the natural world helps to heal. How this relates to Dr. Hauschka Skin Care is understanding the remarkable similarities between plants and the skin, so we are able to select ingredients that support particular skin functions.

We can take Rosemary as an example of how we look at a medicinal plant ingredient. Rosemary has few flowers, and an abundance of leaves. The leaves are the plant’s rhythmic system. We look at the effect Rosemary has on our rhythmic system: enhancing circulation, warming and invigorating.

Dr.Hauschka Skin Care preparations contain elements of plant root, leaf and flower, so all three layers of skin are addressed.

Our preparations are developed by Anthroposophically Trained Doctors and Pharmacists in conjunction with our highly qualified Dr. Hauschka trained Estheticians. Our formulations are complex and they comprise of many elements, never one or two.

‘One violin doesn’t make an orchestra.’

Every ingredient that goes into a Dr. Hauschka Skin Care product has an important job to do for your skin. Whether delivering essential moisture, encouraging resilience, nourishment, protection from the environment, improving efficacy or something for the senses as well as your skin in the form of essential oils. Each element is thoughtfully selected for its particular effects and its interaction with the other ingredients in the formula.

Powerful Night Care

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care is formulated to offer you nurturing experiences that benefit your total wellbeing. By day, our Face Care nourishes, protects from the environment and guides your skin to a healthy, balanced state. At night, our water-based Night Care allows skin to breathe freely while supporting its natural processes of renewal and elimination. All our products are NATRUE certified as 100% natural and organic skin care.

Powerful night care with medicinal botanical extracts
Powerful and liberating – oil-free night care

Did you know that at night your skin is very active? We follow this alternating rhythm every day of our lives. During the day our bodies open up to the environment and nourishment, while the night is used to process and prepare for the new day ahead.

Your skin uses your nightly rest period to thoroughly regenerate from within as it does not need to protect itself against environmental influences at night. The skin can open up during this phase and optimally cleanse itself from within by metabolic elimination.

The next morning your skin looks wonderful and recuperated when you support it with the right night care.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care supports this nightly regeneration process with aqueous, revitalising night care products that respect the skin’s natural rhythm. These are based on medicinal botanical extracts, which offer the skin important stimuli. Back in the 1930s, Elisabeth Sigmund discovered that night creams actually hinder the skin’s vital night-time processes. When she worked with us in the 1960s, this concept was fundamental in the development of our night care.

But what exactly does it mean when we say that Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products give the skin stimuli? Our products do not only provide care for the surface of your skin, but also activate and support the skin’s own regenerative abilities. You could think of our products as a ‘role model’ for your skin, not taking over the work, but to guide and support our skin to regenerate itself.

Night Care:

Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner and Night Serum or Regenerating Serum each evening, or Renewing Night Conditioner 28-30 night treatment, particularly recommended in the most transitional seasons of autumn and spring or Sensitive Care Conditioner or morning and evening or Regenerating Intensive Treatment, Menopausal Intensive Treatment, Soothing Intensive Treatment, Clarifying Intensive Treatment <25 years or Clarifying Intensive Treatment 25+ years.

Interview with Elena Dowedeit, Group Leader of Skin Care Product Management, explains how aqueous, stimuli-packed night care with medicinal plant extracts should be used for healthy skin.

Elena, many customers do not think that Dr. Hauschka offers night care. How would you respond to this as an expert?

We have a comprehensive night care range that follows a completely unique concept. We opt for aqueous, stimulating formulations, which assist the skin with its nightly regeneration processes. We have been building on this concept since 1967 when Dr. Hauschka Skin Care was first launched.

What are the skin’s regeneration processes you mentioned?

At night, when we rest, our skin becomes active. For example, many metabolic processes take place. The skin cleanses and renews itself during the night. It excretes excess substances and forms new ones. We want to support it during this phase with our night care products.

You just said that you use aqueous formulations for these night care products. Why don’t you offer oil-based night creams?

Oily preparations protect the skin and are for the daytime. At night, the skin no longer focuses on providing protection. Oil-free, aqueous products are better at this time. They act as a role model for the skin, demonstrating a vibrant, opening and dynamic metabolic process. This works best with the elixir of life: water. At the same time, they do not impede the active excretion of substances.

How exactly does oil-free night care support the skin over night?

At the heart of the finely balanced compositions are rhythmic medicinal plant extracts and carefully selected minerals. When developing the products, we drew on our wealth of medical and pharmaceutical expertise. These formulations are our answer to the skin’s needs at night. The ingredients stimulate the skin’s natural abilities and regulate its fine metabolic processes. With the aid of this support, the skin can regulate its functions.

You mentioned an entire night care range. What does that consist of?

We differentiate between basic night care products for nightly use and products that are used in 28-day treatment phases. The basic night care regime comprises the three steps: cleanse, tone and revitalise. The core night care product for treatment phases is Renewing Night Conditioner, an ampoule treatment which revitalises the skin.

Why do the treatment phases last 28 days?

It takes 28 days for all of the cells in human skin to completely renew. Renewing Night Conditioner supports this 28-day rhythm with the aid of medicinal plants such as rose, marsh mallow and anthyllis, supplemented by silver and madonna lily – all rhythmically prepared with great vitality. It teaches the skin how to return to a balanced skin condition. Depending on the skin’s needs, we also offer intensive treatments, for example for mature skin, youthful, blemished skin or hypersensitive skin.

How did you come up with the idea of aqueous night care?

We have Elisabeth Sigmund to thank for this concept. The Viennese esthetician and researcher developed her own natural cosmetics range in the 1950s. In the 1960s, she played a major role in the development of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. In Vienna, she studied medicine for two semesters and spent a long time looking at the physiology of the skin. While doing so, she theorised about the benefits of oil-free night care for the skin . Her own tests confirmed her statement. Incidentally, there is a lovely quote from Elisabeth Sigmund from the period in the 1960s when Dr. Hauschka Skin Care was first being developed. At the time, she was living in Sweden and involved in the development work from afar. When Dr. Hauschka Renewing Night Conditioner (then known as Rhythmic Night Conditioner) was developed, she wrote: “I have now performed a full skin treatment on myself with such success that my husband recently asked: ‘Why have you recently been looking so young?’ No further comment is needed.”

The Nightly skin care regime in three steps

Rhythm brings life and creates beautiful skin

To remain strong and healthy, the skin needs to rhythmically alternate between natural polarities. A comparison of the times of day with the seasons helps to better understand the rhythmic processes in the skin. Apple blossom and apple fruit in Dr. Hauschka Night Serum support these processes with their spring and autumn powers.

Sage Mint Deodorant and Rose Deodorant

The formulations of Dr. Hauschka Deodorant were optimised in 2015. They rely on the authentic nature and the full force of their natural ingredients. The effective formulas make it difficult for odour causing bacteria to grow. As a finely balanced composition, the two roll-ons protect and care for the skin, are well tolerated by the skin, and do not stain and do not contain pore constricting aluminium salts. An elegant, delicate fragrance of rose and herb and the fresh touch of sage and mint.

Sage Mint Deodorant – herb fresh reliability

The interaction between the fresh mint fragrance and the herbal bouquet of sage provides long-lasting freshness, you can count on reliable fresh protection. The oil-free Dr. Hauschka Sage Mint Deodorant contains the essences of sage and witch hazel, two naturally effective, anti-microbial and astringent components. The vivacious fragrance of mint and the natural bouquet of sage harmonise to provide a long-lasting feeling of freshness. People who are physically active can trust the reliable, fresh protection offered by Sage Mint Deodorant. The composition of active botanical extracts and essential oils deodorises gently and hinders the growth of odour causing bacteria. Unpleasant odours are effectively prevented.

Tip: The herb fresh scent of Sage Mint Deodorant is ideal to partner with invigorating Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body WashLemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Milk and Quince Hydrating Body Milk.

Rose Deodorant – gentle protection

Creamy Dr. Hauschka Rose Deodorant works reliably and it’s gentle on your skin. Carefully coordinated components with mild deodorising and moisturising properties are used in this creamy formula. The moisturising oil in the rose formula imparts a sense of well-being, while the essence of lady’s mantle has an astringent effect and helps to regulate the process of perspiration. Rose water and essential rose oil add an elegant, delicate fragrance which lends a note of freshness and covers unpleasant scents. Rose harmonising properties and the roll-on is suitable for normal to sensitive skin.

Feel fresh – in every situation

New Dr. Hauschka deodorants provide protection and care for the skin. Whether during exercise or in stressful situations, the body starts to sweat under a wide variety of circumstances. Perspiration is a completely normal metabolic function, but it can be unpleasant in certain situations. This is why the new deodorants from Dr. Hauschka inhibit the growth of bacteria and cover odours naturally. However, they do not suppress the process of perspiration itself – which means they do not need to contain aluminium compounds.

Like a balm for the skin, Rose Deodorant contains moisturising jojoba oil, while Sage Mint Deodorant has a gel-like consistency and is oil-free. Both stay on the skin longer than short-acting deodorant sprays, imparting a lasting feeling of natural freshness.

How quickly and how much a person perspires depends on a number of factors – diet, clothing, and individual levels of activity and stress. Perspiration regulates the body’s temperature, eliminates metabolic wastes and combines with the skin’s acid mantle to form a barrier that protects us from harmful germs.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 10.37.33 am

What makes Dr. Hauschka Deodorants’ so effective in fighting the undesirable side-effects of perspiration?

The key lies in the newly developed formulas, with their authentic character and the full power of their naturally astringent, anti-microbial and moisturising ingredients. Both products are vegan and contain neither aluminium chlorohydrate nor other soluble aluminium compounds which constrict the sweat glands. The fundamentally different formulas of the two deodorants combine effective skin care and proven protection. Deodorising ingredients were composed and refined with moisturising extracts of medicinal plants and natural essential oils.

  • Tests have shown that both products are very well tolerated by the skin and offer long-lasting effectiveness
  • Do not sting when applied directly after shaving
  • Do not leave any traces on clothing

Please note: If you are going through transition from anti-perspirant use, that blocks your pores, to natural and organic Dr. Hauschka Deodorants, you may experience a couple of weeks detox.

Daily Mail > Possible link between anti-perspirants and breast cancer

Telegraph > Aluminium possible link to breast cancer

Editor’s note: When my partner’s Aunty was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer her oncologist advised “Switch to a natural deodorant such as Dr. Hauschka.” Of course her oncologist had no knowledge that I worked for Dr. Hauschka. I believe women should be made aware of comments such as this.

Why do we perspire?

Perspiring or sweating plays a vital role in maintaining normal health because it helps our bodies:

  • eliminate toxins
  • maintain the balance of salt levels
  • regulate the body temperature

On average we lose around 500mls to 1 litre of liquid a day through our skin. Generally, this evaporates very quickly.

We perspire

  • when we exert ourselves through exercise and physical activity
  • with the release of adrenaline due to fear or worry
  • when your environment is too warm

Interestingly, perspiration is almost odourless when it’s fresh, but when it stays on the skin it develops an odour. This smell is created by bacteria that breed in the warm, moist and nutrient-rich conditions created by perspiration.

What’s the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants?

Antiperspirants: Stop you from perspiring

Deodorants: Stop the bacteria from smelling, by killing the bacteria or neutralising the smell

The science behind deodorant

Scientists figured out that the best approach would be to prevent these bacteria from breeding, thereby having a deodorising action. The first commercial deodorant was launched in 1888. Unfortunately, in the quest for ever stronger and more effective deodorants, stronger and more powerful chemicals started to be used.

The science behind antiperspirants

Antiperspirants are based on ingredients such as aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium zirconium trichlorohydrate. These aluminium ions form a temporary blockage in the sweat ducts, stopping the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface.

Most antiperspirants contain ingredients which react with protein molecules present in perspiration and swell to form a gel-like substance. For these to be effective, their molecular size needs to be small enough to allow them to enter skin pores so that when they swell and turn to a gel, they effectively block the pores and prevent sweat from being secreted.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 11.35.47 am

What’s the alternative to chemical deodorants?

Zinc ricinoleate is the zinc salt of ricinoleic acid, extracted from the seeds of the castor oil plant. Zinc ricinoleate does not inhibit normal perspiration, and will not interfere with the natural flora of the skin. Instead, it ‘fixes’ the odours produced by bacterial decomposition in sweat so that they cannot be released into the atmosphere and cause the characteristic sweaty smell.

Chemicals in deodorants

Many familiar brands of deodorants contain triclosan. The chemicals in deodorants which prevent bacteria from growing have been linked to health problems ranging from skin irritation and contact dermatitis. Excessive use of spray deodorants have also been linked with more serious problems such as allergic reactions, asthma and breathing difficulties.

Chemicals in antiperspirants

Aluminium found in antiperspirants can cause inflammation, Aluminium chlorohydrate and Aluminium zirconium chlorohydrate are both used in chemical antiperspirants. These are both based on aluminium and can cause skin irritation.

Research suggests that aluminium-based compounds may be linked to elevated aluminium levels and health problems including breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Antiperspirants also have another downside – not only can they cause the problems mentioned above, but they also prevent the body from eliminating toxins through perspiration and reduce our ability to regulate body temperature.

Applying our homeopathic knowledge of ‘like treats like’ we recommend an oil for an oily skin. It may seem counter-intuitive however, harsh products just ‘strip’ the skin creating imbalance and the skin produces more oil to compensate whereas Clarifying Day Oil calms and relaxes the skin.

If you get pimples then definitely add Coverstick into your morning regime, to treat and conceal with just the right amount of tea tree and manuka for their anti-bacterial properties, and tapioca starch which absorbs. Amazing product!

If Foundation is too rich for your skin then mix a little Translucent Bronzing Tint with your Clarifying Day Oil.

Please noteClarifying Day Oil may also be used as an Oil ‘serum’ by mixing a drop or two with Rose Day Cream for additional protection against the environment and an anti-oxidant boost for any skin condition.

9 tips for a morning routine to set you up for a great day

Screen Shot 2015-02-27 at 1.09.49 pm

The expression ‘getting up on the wrong side of the bed’ came about for good reason. Starting your day in a well-intentioned, conscious manner is highly likely to have a positive impact on the day ahead. Morning rituals are important to take time out from a busy world to ensure self-care and to set priorities and goals.

1. Plan your day the night before
Organising routine things like clothes, breakfast, what time you’ll need to leave and what you need to take with you can help you feel in control and more relaxed in the mornings. Put reminders in your phone, or write a list for the day’s priorities, this eases a sense of feeling overwhelmed with workload, instead you focus on ticking one job off after the other. Hello sense of achievement without the stress!

2. Get up straight away
Because if you nod off again, you’ll feel worse, and you’ll be rushing, which is never a good way to start the day.

3. Lemon juice in warm water
Squeeze the juice of half a lemon and a capful of organic cider vinegar in your cup the night before. In the morning just put in cold water, then top up from the kettle so it’s warm. Lemon juice activates your digestive enzymes, plus it’s alkaline, making it the perfect foil to any more acidic foods you may ingest later in the day, helps keep skin clear too.

Screen Shot 2015-08-11 at 9.17.27 am

4. Exercise
Those who exercise in the morning are more likely to stick with their workout than those who exercise later in the day. There’s never going to be anything else happening at 6am! A 30 minute walk warms you as it gets your circulation going, supports your lymph system, aids stress and sleep, oxygenates, supports happiness and peace of mind and prepares you for the day ahead.

Natural sunlight sends a signal to your brain to slow the production of the hormone melatonin, which makes you sleepy, and start producing more serotonin to wake you up.

5. Meditate
Meditation may seem a counter-intuitive thing to do in the morning, but rather than making you sleepy, it can actually stimulate your brain and helps you focus your breath. Research shows that mindfulness also affects the structure of the brain, changing it in ways that may increase attention span, sharpen focus, improve memory and enhance productivity.

6. Enjoy a cup of tea
Tea is full of antioxidants, which not only protect our cells from free radicals, but may also balance our mood and modulate hormones including serotonin (to wake us up) and dopamine (to make us feel good).

7. Dr. Hauschka face care morning ritual

8. Get warm
Have your shower and then get dressed. If you’re feeling cold, you are using more energy to keep warm and using less on inspiration and focus.

9. Eat breakfast
Food fuels mental performance and gives us energy, so it makes sense that a great day starts with a healthy ‘break’ ‘fast’.

Conversation with Virginia Bowers

Virginia Bowers
Virginia Bowers

How did you first hear about Dr. Hauschka Skin Care?

“I first learnt about Dr. Hauschka in 2004, while I was researching recommendations on the internet for natural treatments for my very sensitive skin.

It was midwinter in Melbourne and my skin was dry and irritated. Through years of sitting in the makeup chair and in various climates, my skin had gone through these stages before and I’d never really found a complete solution.

I was intrigued by the description of their Renewing Night Conditioner, (recommended by a number of people as a ‘miracle cure’ for all kinds of skin ailments) and by the fact that Dr. Hauschka’s inspiration for all his work came from indications given by the Austrian Philosopher, Dr. Rudolf Steiner, whose teachings I had just discovered. So, I decided to try it immediately. I was also inspired by the ethos of the company, their lack of advertising, and the strict standards they employed throughout the whole process of manufacturing, from the biodynamic farming onwards to a modern, practical embodiment, I thought of Rudolf Steiner’s Spiritual Science”.

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 2.14.38 pm

What was your reaction when you first applied Dr. Hauschka to your skin?

“I remember an incredible softness to my skin after I first used the Cleansing Cream – it had deeply cleansed but not stripped the oils out of my skin, which was a strange sensation! The scent was lovely but also grounded and pleasant, in a comforting sort of way. I’m finding it hard to describe!

The Renewing Night Conditioner was a revelation, I was extremely dubious as to what a small ampoule of pleasantly scented water would achieve overnight, for my skin was usually dry, even after applying extremely thick layers of night creams, balms and lotions.

In the morning of the first day, my skin felt comfortable and clear, and its usual tight, dry feeling seemed to have disappeared. So for me the effects were immediate, the sensations of dryness and irritation disappearing almost straight away.

Having studied both the writings of Dr. Rudolf Hauschka and Dr. Rudolf Steiner for some time now, Dr. Hauschka Skin Care has become very close to my heart – bearing as it does, the fruits of Dr. Hauschka’s remarkable life’s work into very real and tangible results in this hectic world. I find Dr. Hauschka Skin Care especially inspiring in today’s ridiculously overcrowded skin care and cosmetics markets, most of which, it seems are based on exaggeration and deceitful claims.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care is for me, simply the best. There’s a limit as to how many chemicals we can expose our bodies to without an eventual breakdown of some kind, and Dr. Hauschka is my antidote to the onslaughts of modern life.”

Elisabeth Sigmund – Chapter 7

Elisabeth Sigmund initially created products individually for each customer. Later, she developed a fixed basic range; 1950s.

A sage bath essence was the only one of her products that Elisabeth Sigmund sold professionally in Sweden. It was called ‘Balett fot-elixir’ and was intended as a foot bath for dancers.

A developer with new ideas
Once the Sigmund’s had established themselves in Sweden, Elisabeth Sigmund finally had the time she needed to work on her skin care products and build up a fixed range. To her, skin care was both a form of therapy and a kind of health care. Each formulation was therefore based on a nurturing plant with ingredients that affect the skin. Her products solely contained natural ingredients. Instead of using isolated active ingredients, Elisabeth Sigmund worked with whole plant parts. She did not develop her products for specific skin types, such as oily or dry skin, but instead assumed that everyone’s skin is able to find its way back to a balanced state using its own strength. She therefore talked about temporary skin conditions that have the potential to change. Her cosmetics were intended to support this change by triggering the skin’s own regenerative powers.

A raw materials importer with high quality standards
It was not so easy to get good quality ingredients such as beeswax, natural plant oils, almonds, natural essential oils, silk or dried plants for the formulations. Elisabeth Sigmund ordered most of these from shops in Germany and Austria where she was sometimes able to purchase organic products. As a result of her interest in Rudolf Steiner, which had taken her in the direction of biodynamic agriculture, this criterion was important to her. She obtained fresh plants, such as moisture-rich liquorice roots, from a Swedish gardener and ordered WALA medicinal ampoules, which she had found out about from her anthroposophic doctor in Stockholm, directly from WALA in Eckwälden.

A cosmetician by calling
Elisabeth Sigmund gave her acquaintances the skin care products she had made to test. When they noticed how well the products worked for them, they offered to pay Elisabeth Sigmund to treat them. Over time, it became too time consuming to visit all of her clients at home. Therefore, in the 1950s, Elisabeth Sigmund opened the Salong för Skönhetsvård (literally meaning ‘beauty salon’) in Stockholm.

A producer with ideas
Elisabeth Sigmund’s first fixed basic range, which she used to provide treatments in her beauty salon, consisted of rose cream following her grandmother’s recipe as well as another face cream, face toner, cleansing cream with ground almonds, face mask, sage bath essence, silk powder, a skin treatment and various facial oils. Karl Sigmund constructed small pieces of production and filling equipment. For example, he attached a mixer with a crank arm to a bowl for stirring creams. He also converted a small bucket into a filling station for face lotion by installing a hose with a tap just above the bottom. The products, which contained no preservatives, could be kept in the refrigerator for about a month. For that reason, Elisabeth Sigmund only produced small quantities.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 9.04.45 am

Elisabeth Sigmund produced small quantities of her own natural skin care products in her Stockholm skin care studio. She noted down her formulations on index cards and used a set of precision scales to accurately weigh out the necessary amounts of natural ingredients.

Elisabeth Sigmund – Chapter 4 – Skin Care From A Research Perspective

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 9.32.49 am
Elisabeth 1929

Elisabeth Sigmund’s playful journeys of discovery on her mother’s dressing table were soon driven forward by her inquiring mind. For example, she observed how the oily and aqueous phases of the Elida day cream that her mother used on her face separated out. When she opened the tube, there was an oily layer on the cream.

Somehow, the pharmacist Paul Redtenbacher, who made the Hamamelis facial toner and Crème Céleste for the females in the Resch family using a recipe belonging to their grandmother Anastasia, realised that Elisabeth Sigmund had an extraordinary interest in skin care. He took her to the area of the pharmacy where he produced ointments, creams and facial toners among other things. There, he showed her how these were made and after a while, allowed her to mix them herself. That is when she learned how an emulsion is created.

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 9.43.05 am

Using natural ingredients
Paul Redtenbacher aroused Elisabeth Sigmund’s interest in home-made skin care products with both a cosmetic and a nurturing effect. She was now able to put her knowledge of plants to practical use for the first time. Elisabeth Sigmund made her first attempts to create products at home using sage tea, which relieves inflammation. She also placed rose petals in water and added essential rose oil because the aqueous extract was not as strongly perfumed as she had hoped. Her mother mistakenly saw this curiosity as vanity and tried to stop her daughter from experimenting, but to no avail. Elisabeth Sigmund’s interest in developing her own skin care products became increasingly strong. “I didn’t like the creams that were for sale so wanted to make my own, with ingredients that pleased me”, she once explained. While still at school, Elisabeth and her best friend Wilma took a cosmetics course in Vienna offered by the Geneva-based cosmetics manufacturer Tokalon.

Elisabeth Sigmund’s grandmother Anastasia brought the recipe for the “Crème Céleste” or “heavenly cream”, from her home town of Mähren. This face cream with almond oil and rose water is reputed to have been one of the beauty secrets of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary (1837-1898). When Elisabeth Sigmund developed the first range of Dr. Hauschka skin care products with WALA, the Crème Céleste acted as the model for today’s Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream, although the formulation of the latter is significantly more extensive. Extracts of rose petals and wild rose hips nurture and balance the skin. Shea butter, rose petal wax and avocado oil protect and help retain moisture. Extracts of marsh mallow and St. John’s wort soothe redness, hydrate and fortify.

Which Moisturiser is right for you?

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 5.03.19 pmScreen Shot 2015-02-23 at 2.11.37 pm

IMPORTANT – How to use our Moisturisers
Our moisturisers are highly concentrated, they’re formulated specifically to be applied as follows:

1) Apply in the morning after Cleansing Cream and Toner
2) Place approximately a large pea size of Day Cream in the palm of your hand (or in the case of Clarifying Day Oil 2-3 drops)
3) Warm to melt the waxes and oils between the palms of both hands
4) Apply to skin that’s still moist from Toner, to ensure even and economical application, using the palms of both hands
5) Apply from centre of the face outwards in direction of lymph flow

In the evening after Cleansing Milk and Toning no moisturiser is needed as heavy, occlusive night creams disrupt the elimination and regeneration functions of the skin overnight.

The Beauty of Every Face

Elisabeth Sigmund in Her Own Words

In December 2013, Esthetician, Formulator and Co-Founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Elisabeth Sigmund passed away at the age of 99. The insights Elisabeth Sigmund offers into skin care, beauty and her life are at once fascinating, inspiring and profound.

Screen Shot 2014-01-14 at 5.58.23 pm

A Resolution to Take Skin Care Seriously

“In 1929, a very important thing happened in my life. My father died at the age of 41. I was 14, so for me it felt like the end of the world. I believed my father had died due to a wrong diagnosis. This influenced my decision to go to medical school in Vienna, where I was one of only two female students. We were not treated badly but just considered to be nonexistent. I also observed a disregard for skin care by traditional medicine, as if skin care did not merit serious study. I saw that skin care was a kind of ‘stepchild’ that wasn’t taken very seriously, but were delegated to vanity and unrelated to health. However, I saw the importance that the skin, the largest organ of the body, plays maintaining and reflecting health.

“I eventually became ill and left medical school and never returned. I traveled to the Alps to recover and there I imagined developing my own skin care preparations. I went on many walks and on one of these walks I discovered an old monastery where I was allowed to use the library. There I found interesting connections between medicine and skin care. In one of the books, I found an old formulation for a face tonic. From this, I formulated my first facial toner and began my career as a developer of skin care preparations. Also during this time, I studied the works of Rudolf Steiner where I came across the word SCHONHEIT, the German word for beauty. Inherent in the meaning of the word is the idea that something of an inner soul quality shines through the human being. This confirmed my perception that skin care should not be treated superficially.”

ES 1930s
Elisabeth – 1930’s

When Skin Care Was the Work of “Beauty Queens.”

“Skin care or estheticians were called “Oh, the beauty queens” by blue-collar workers as well as society ladies. Even my own mother hesitated to tell her friends that her daughter was in the skin care business because she thought it was very inappropriate. Basically there was very little choice of products and only people of a higher social class could afford to buy skin care at that time. My mother used a formulation of almond paste to cleanse her delicate face and this was the basis for our cleansing cream as we have it today in the Dr. Hauschka range.”

ES 1945
Elisabeth – 1945

“My goal was to address the changing conditions of my client’s skin.”

“Years later, after World War II, I had a clinic in Sweden. I tested every product on the market and was dissatisfied with what I found. I continued making my own preparations for individual clients and achieved great results and devoted clients. However after two years of preparing products for different clients with different skin conditions, as well as for different seasons, I felt that the results, although effective, were too pampering. My goal was to address the changing condition of my client’s skin by changing her formulas for all the variables involved. Just about this time a wealthy client offered me the use of a cottage on a beautiful island in Sweden.”

Anthyllis to balance and regulate all skin conditions. Also known as Woundwort & Kidney Vetch

Anthyllis, “the central plant of my facial preparations.”

“Surrounded by nature and silence, I took long walks. One day I came upon a meadow of clover which made me think of anthyllis, a plant that I had read about in an old text while researching medicinal plants at a monastery in Germany. I started adding an extract of anthyllis to the products and discovered that it benefited many different skin conditions. After many successful experiments on my clients, I chose anthyllis as the central plant for my facial preparations. I then added complementary ingredients to form compositions that would stimulate and support the skins own functions and thus regulate the skin rather than pamper it.”

Grandmother’s Recipe for Rose Day Cream

“The Rose Day Cream is based on a cream that my grandmother used to use, a kind of Crème Céleste or celestial cream. She had a recipe for it, which her pharmacist made up newly for her every time she ran out. This face cream contained olive oil, beeswax, ethereal rose oil and rose water. When I first took a real interest in skin care, my grandmother gave me a copy of the recipe, which she had brought from her home region of Moravia. Despite the turmoil of the Second World War, during which I had to move house several times, I saved it as my little gem. Once in Stockholm, I took it back out and modified it.”

The Beauty of Every Face

“I observed that there is an architectural beauty to every human face. That one can care for the face with the finest products and decorative, but that there is something that transcends those factors. Something shines through that can also have a negative expression and that regardless of the external situation, the negative remains apparent. As an esthetician, I was able to establish an intimate and trusting relationship with my clients. When I noticed anger, jealousy or any conflict expressed on a client’s face that prevented one’s own beauty from shining forth, I consciously worked to help resolve the conflict. My Dr. Hauschka Classic Treatment offers the chance to touch clients in a therapeutic manner that often is enough to resolve their unease with themselves. At times, it took more of a kind and patient conversation with clients to help them remember their inner beauty. I see it as the task of an esthetician to help the client express their inner beauty and not work simply on the surface.”

Most Important Discoveries

“For me personally, in addition to the discovery of so many medicinal plants that affected the skin, there were two major things. Firstly, I discovered that a cosmetic made purely from natural ingredients can do a great deal more for the skin than a conventional cosmetic made from chemical/synthetic substances.

“The second key discovery for my treatment concept was that the skin regenerates more effectively at night if you do not use a night cream. It is far better to treat your skin with an aqueous solution containing medicinal plants that stimulate your skin’s natural activity. I am delighted to see that these discoveries still form the basis of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care.”

The Magic of Natural and Organic Perfume

Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 2.59.14 pm

Zimmermann has a dream: to create the fragrance that captivates people’s senses, that transforms them, and perhaps create a peaceful world.

Jörg Zimmermann’s workplace is all the way at the top, just below the roof of WALA /Dr. Hauschka. Here he finds the quiet he needs to stimulate all the senses. In his head, he creates the fragrances that lend Dr. Hauschka products their individual note. “Every product is different and thus requires its own statement.” Dr. Hauschka Skin Care uses exclusively natural substances compatible with the uncompromising demands of the company’s philosophy. “My job is to convey these values in my fragrance creations. None of the human senses is so old and so directly connected to the limbic system as the sense of smell. It is closely related to memory and emotion,” says Jörg Zimmermann. “Fragrances make it possible to travel through time, to recall that which was long forgotten. Nothing triggers more spontaneous attraction or rejection than fragrances – they are encrypted messages transmitted by our environment. The magic of scent has always been of major importance; the sensual allure of fragrance enjoys a long tradition.” The ‘Master of Fragrances’ at Dr. Hauschka has been under their spell for as long as he can remember. As a result, it was always his hope to work with fragrances. It is a characteristic trait of Jörg Zimmermann to pursue goals with passion and perseverance. “One needs this trait as a perfumer. You always have to be on top of things, not be discouraged by failed experiments.” It takes months, sometimes years, for a new fragrance to be created. Zimmermann writes down hundreds of formulas only to discard them in the end. Perhaps two of 100 fragrance creations are ever actually implemented. “The ability to smell analytically is important.” He uses his nose to deconstruct a perfume into its components and recognise what ingredients disturb the fragrance’s harmonious perception, what amounts to increase or decrease, and what substances to add or remove. “Every fragrance consists of top notes, middle notes and base notes”, explains Jörg Zimmermann. The top notes form the initial impression, the introduction of the perfume so to speak. They are followed by the middle notes, which convey the heart of the fragrance and give it shape. The third and final fragrance note is the base note. It represents the finale of the fragrance, much like in a symphony orchestra. “The trick is to harmonise these three parts, to co-ordinate their temporal and spatial progression.”

Portait Parfumeur Joerg Zimmermann 4.4.08

The member of the French Perfumers’ Society requires absolute quiet during his work. This allows him to stimulate all the senses and recall images from his memory. After all, creating a scent involves much more than simply combining raw materials. It connects the world of thought with the world of feeling. Jörg Zimmermann composes, hears internal music, senses a wonderful lightness. Like a painter who has the image he wants to paint in front of his eyes, Zimmermann first creates the perfume in his head. He looks for base harmonies, previously combined individual scent compositions, to serve as a foundation. And then everything begins to flow. Then the perfumer begins to experiment with the tones of his “fragrance organ”. This is the name given to the collection of essential oils from which he selects the key components for a fragrance. Some 200 substances are available, of which Zimmermann uses various numbers as ingredients in his composition. The more technical skills of developing perfumes can certainly be learned, but the ability to compose fragrances must be inborn. Jörg Zimmermann undeniably has this skill. “But I didn’t know what path to follow at first to make professional use of my abilities,” he recalls. So he studied art and cultural education, sharpening his artistic, literary and musical senses. There is no classical course of training to become a perfumer, neither in Germany nor abroad. But France is considered the mother country of perfume. At the age of 30, Jörg Zimmerman journeyed to southern France – more specifically, to Grasse, the capital of the perfume world. Gloves were perfumed in this city near the Côte d’Azur as early as the 17th century. Born in Tettnang, Germany and raised in the city of Baden-Baden, Zimmermann studied at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery from 2004 to 2006 and then worked with leading perfumers. He has been working for Dr. Hauschka since summer 2006, continuing a long-running tradition: the company has never purchased fragrances, choosing to develop them itself instead. “This helps our products to maintain their unmistakable character,” emphasises Zimmermann. Dr. Hauschka skin care products contain no chemical/synthetic fragrances, despite their extensive availability on the market: “We use exclusively natural essential oils of the very highest quality.” Jörg Zimmermann is convinced: “Our customers notice this uniqueness, this strong foundation of knowledge which flows into our products. The soul senses it and is able to regenerate itself – along with the entire person.”

Rose Nurturing Body Wash
Composition with rose – enveloping and mysterious

“As I developed my ideas I kept the following questions in mind: What is the smell of a rose with nurturing and harmonising powers? What qualities does a rose emanate that capture our attention? When you compare the scent of roses, you discover that there is a broad spectrum within the genus. I searched for the most beautiful aspects. Usually fresh, citrus-like fragrances are emitted from the centre of the bud and develop as the rose opens. I discovered orange blossoms, delicate and spicy clove tones, and woody, velvety and creamy components. I was aiming for a creation in which the rose is light and playful, but at the same time very regal and seductive. A rosy and floral heart accord forms the main body around which the other individual aspects are grouped. An amber-like base gives the composition a creamy and gentle finish, which I interpreted using sandalwood and vanilla. They radiate a mysterious and velvety depth.”

Almond Soothing Body Wash
Composition with almond – delicate and floral

“It was my wish to create a tangible experience of the progression from blossom to fruit, bringing in all these associations. This invoked images of the early days of spring, when the radiant blue sky shimmers above a sea of delicate pink blossoms that appear to dance in the mild air. The idea represented by the composition with almond is the chiffon-like transparency of a pink rose. I used bergamot, ylang-ylang and rose to interpret this floral chord. A balsamic base of tonka bean and vanilla sweeps us away to a sumptuous oriental palace and awakens memories of sweet, pleasurable indulgences.”

Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Wash
Composition with lemon and lemon grass – sparkling and refreshing

“I was on the lookout for a truly special raw material. I discovered essential oil made from fresh gingerroot, which emits a very citric fragrance. We are mostly familiar with ginger in Asian cuisine, so there is a close association with lemongrass. In the top note we perceive lemon and lime, which have a refreshing and toning effect. Fresh gingerroot and lemongrass draw out the citric impression and create an increasing complexity. However, this is not meant to be a complicated fragrance, but rather a clear, refreshing concept that is made richer with exotic ingredients. I see two tendencies in this fragrance. The first is toward athleticism, dynamism and vitality; the second, the concentration that comes from increased alertness. The scent stimulates and creates a presence – a wonderful shot of refreshment.”

Lavender Sandalwood Calming Body Wash
Composition of lavender and sandalwood – quiet and harmonising freshness

“I was looking for a special variety of lavender with a gentle floral note and a lot of elegance. I found it at an elevation of 1,000 metres. This lavender is notable for the sense of peace and harmony that it projects. However, it also possesses a certain gentle yet rejuvenating freshness. The Australian sandalwood works its charm in the background, embedded in a regal, ambery chord, which rounds off the quiet freshness of the lavender with an enveloping, amber-like warmth. For me the fragrance creates associations of Provençal villages rising from the morning mist along the lines of hills on the Côte d’Azur.”

The language of nature

Jörg Zimmermann, perfume specialist at Dr. Hauschka, tells us how he creates the Dr. Hauschka fragrances and what the secret code of nature is all about.

Dr. Hauschka: Can you train your sense of smell?
Jörg Zimmermann: Yes. It is not just about smelling it is about conscious smelling. It is like turning on a switch in your memory so that on smelling an individual substance you create associations with it and internalise the fragrance. Later, when you smell the substance again, you automatically associate it with certain imagery and can recognise it. Conscious smelling is a minor change in perception: we have a clear knowledge of how the fragrance affects us, where we smell it, how we perceive it and what we associate with it. Anyone who trains in this art and writes down their experiences will develop their own fragrance index for reference at any time.

Dr. Hauschka: Was there a specific moment when knew you were destined to be a perfume specialist?
Jörg Zimmermann: When I was four, I went exploring on my own in a nearby forest and had an intense experience with nature. I can still remember it well: at midday, the sun hit the forest at an angle, shining through the young trees and onto a small cluster of wood anemones that had sprung up all over the fresh forest floor. I suddenly felt like a face was looking at me; like these little flowers wanted to give me a message. I felt their desire to be looked at, but how was I to understand their essence? I looked at the flowers for a long time and fell in love with them. They bade me to move closer and absorb their silent message through their scent. I carefully knelt down on the ground and cautiously placed my nose by the opening of the greenish-yellow flowers. For a moment, I believed in magic; a natural power that dominates us and rules everything. Was this love in its purest form?
The joy I felt was overwhelming. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before. My greatest wish was to hold onto and remember it. Through scent, I had connected with nature. From then on, I could not help but wonder about the hidden world behind things. I wanted to understand the essence of everything I came across, remember things through their scent and enable others to share my experiences.

Dr. Hauschka: But is that actually possible? After all, we do not smell the plants directly but simply their fragrance through the products?
Jörg Zimmermann: It is not about smelling plants directly but rather how we are affected by our memory of doing so. Stimuli are needed to trigger the memory. If you imagine that each essential oil represents the essence of a plant, you can envisage what it means to convert this into a sensual experience that tells a story.
By integrating the essence of individual plants you create the essence of an overall product. This sensual processing method humanises the substance and makes it accessible.
As a perfume specialist, I regard it as my cultural duty to subject the essential oils to processes in which the ideas archetypically embedded in us become something that can be experienced. Only on smelling transitions do we actually develop the idea that the product aims to convey.
Dr. Hauschka: How do you develop a fragrance?
Jörg Zimmermann: It is very conscious, reflective work. I put myself in a state of heightened consciousness and imagine what will happen when I combine the proportions of each fragrance. For me, it is about revealing the secret laws of nature, or in other words discovering the meaning of each individual substance and how the idea of the fragrance could be logically realised so that when we smell it, we perceive an organic process and an atmosphere can be created. Secret

Dr. Hauschka: Secret laws of nature?
Jörg Zimmermann: It is like with music. I can press all the keys on a piano and make sound. Music is only created when I press certain keys in a certain way and a feeling arises from the logical sequence of the melody. The greater my understanding of nature’s secret code, the easier it is for people to enjoy all elements of a fragrance.
When I am working on a fragrance, I mentally collate the plants so that I can sense their smell. These are the times in which I have a clear picture of how things logically go together to create a metamorphosis and make tangible transitions between top and base notes.
In my memory, I always find part of one substance that contains part of another substance. There are some elements of fragrance that may be similar, such as bergamot, rose or neroli. I look at the similarities and differences so that I can add things to complement the former. Once all the parameters have been skilfully aligned and the fragrance and the idea are both tangible, something truly magical occurs.

Dr. Hauschka: Is that what makes Dr. Hauschka fragrances special?
Jörg Zimmermann: Yes. The top, middle and base notes of the Dr. Hauschka fragrances can be transmitted to the entire body. By perceiving the fragrance in different areas of our body, we trigger an inner vitality, which can be externally observed as a kind of aura. In contrast, conventional, synthetic fragrances are something we only wear externally, like accessories.
The high level of vitality and complexity associated with natural fragrances is extremely striking and explains why they are so important to humans. Humans too are highly complex and can wonderfully combine themselves with things that complement them. Attention and creativity, attraction and curiosity are created – but why is nature so good at this? It does not impose its will but instead adds refinement while stimulating and enlivening our body’s own activity.

Product of the Month: Blackthorn Body Oil

Dr.Hauschka Skin Care; Dr.Hauschka Kosmetik

Blackthorn Body Oil’s box is labelled ‘helps to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy’, yet this is only one of Blackthorn Body Oil’s many talents, there is so much more…

This product is a brilliant choice for all women:
– Keeps skin firm and elastic
– For use in any weight loss or weight gain
– For dry skin, especially lower legs
– Blackthorn imparts a sense of vitality
– Recommended for those who are prone to back and chest acne
– For those who do not warm to Rose, Lavender or Lemon Lemongrass moisturising, they usually find Blackthorn suits them
– For the outdoors type who wishes to protect her skin from dehydration and wants to keep it firm and toned
– After waxing

And for men:
– After waxing and wants his skin toned and oiled with a fresh aroma
– For dry, scaling skin by long outdoor exposure and to ensure the skin is more resilient to external aggressors
– An older gentleman’s dry and scaly skin and who needs skin protection to prevent dryness
– Toning in weight loss or gain, for example if he has put on a little bit of weight around the stomach
– Recommended for the man who is prone to pimples and acne on back and chest

Blackthorn is mainly made from plant extracts with only a minute amount of plant essential oils for aroma.  The scent is neither overly feminine or masculine and suits the active, professional, no-nonsense personality.

For me, personally, wearing Blackthorn Body Oil helps give me more focus when productivity is required and I also find it imparts a sense of strength and vitality.  It also happens to be the Body Oil that I receive “love your perfume” compliments at my morning coffee stop!

Tip: A winning, strengthening and toning partnership is Blackthorn Body Oil mixed with Lemon Lemongrass Body Moisturiser and applied to skin still slightly moist from the shower, for even and economical application.

Blackthorn Body Oil description:

Supple, toned skin depends upon skin elasticity. Blackthorn Body Oil offers strengthening, warming skin care for all the family. It has even proved successful during pregnancy when it is particularly important to keep skin supple to prevent pregnancy-induced stretch marks.

Blackthorn blossom and birch leaf extracts enhance skin elasticity while sun-drenched St. John’s wort and jojoba oil support the skin’s natural processes of renewal and fortification.

Formulation: Blackthorn blossoms, birch leaves and St. John’s wort are combined with sunflower oil, then carefully blended using unique rhythmic processing methods. During this phase, the mixtures are heated to 37 °C – human body temperature. They are carefully mixed in the mornings and evenings to allow the properties of the nurturing plants to be transferred to the oil.

Blackthorn prunus-spinosa

Synonyms: Sloe, Sloe Berry
Scientific Name: Prunus spinosa
Family: Rosacea

Blackthorn was originally a native of central Europe. Thanks to its hardiness it has become widespread and is now found from southern Sweden to the Urals, and in the moderate zones of Southwest Asia, North Africa and North America.

Flavonoid glycosides, coumarin derivatives, tannins and bitter substances, acids, vitamin C, traces of amygdalin (cyanogenic glycoside)

The dense, spreading, much-branched thorny shrub, which can reach a height of up to 3 m (9 feet), flowers from March to April in the European spring. The small white scented flowers appear before the leaves. They are usually solitary, on short stems, but cover the entire length of the branches so densely that the whole shrub is shrouded in white. In May, after the flowers, the oval, tooth-edged leaves appear, and in late summer the bluish-black plum-like fruits which have a whitish bloom and astringent green flesh. They are 1 cm in diameter, contain a stone and are only edible after the frost. The thorns, incidentally, are transformed lateral branchlets.

Blackthorn berries
Blackthorn berries

Blackthorn likes sunny hills and dry, sparse deciduous woods with chalky, deep soil. Together with other members of the rose family it often forms impenetrable thorny thickets. The light-loving blackthorn is extremely resistant to pests and regenerates quickly after cutting. It can colonise shallow soil quickly and spreads through seed dispersal by mammals and birds and by production of root suckers. Even on wind-exposed sites it defies the natural forces. So it is not surprising that it was used as pioneer wood for stabilising embankments and dry slopes and for landscaping slag heaps and wasteland, as well as for wind and snow screens. With its high value as honey plant, too, blackthorn emerges as something of an ideal shrub.

Today the fruits of the blackthorn are still used to brew warming drinks for harsh winter evenings: sloe wine and sloe gin make you feel cozy indoors while winter rages outside. Syrups, jellies and jams are also a vitamin-rich delicacy.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Early in the spring, even before the young shoots and leaves begin to sprout, the blackthorn envelops itself in a radiant white mass of blossoms. But it is not until late in the year, when the first frosts herald the coming of winter, that the fruits ripen and become sweet. Thus, the blackthorn only hesitantly divulges its vital powers, keeps them in a certain inwardness. The flowers which have gone through the winter help the human organism to overcome the winter and to adapt its metabolism to the spring.

The vitality-bearing fruits provide strength in states of exhaustion. Elixirs of the fruit were made for use during convalescence.

Dr.Hauschka Blackthorn Body Oil strengthens and warms the skin. With its pleasant fragrance, the harmonious composition of blackthorn blossom, birch leaves and St. John’swort firms and purifies the tissues. The skin-strengthening properties give the skin a fresh, moisturised appearance.

Gently prepared oil extracts from blackthorn blossom unfold their conditioning properties in Dr.Hauschka Hand Cream, Lemon Lemongrass Body Moisturiser and Quince Body Moisturiser, too. Fully ripe blackthorn fruits harvested in the wild are carefully processed to essences which round off the composition of Lemon Lemongrass Body Moisturiser, Quince Body Moisturiser and Deodorant Fresh.

Festive Make-up from Dr. Hauschka

Dr. Hauschka decorate Cosmetic; Dr. Hauschka Dekorative Kosmetik

Natural and Organic Make-up for colour and care

Time to make a sensational appearance

Festive occasions are always exciting. They are a moment to make a unique and striking appearance. We want you to shine, by looking elegant and full of self-confidence.

Dr. Hauschka make-up-artist Karim Sattar has developed a festive make-up look for these special occasions. He places a spotlight on the most expressive features, the eyes and the mouth. In addition to a very even complexion, the look is dominated by light ivory on the eyelids and black eyeliner around the eyes, underscored by volumising black mascara on the lashes. For an expressive contrast Karim Sattar uses a warm red on the lips, with lipliner in the same colour providing dynamic accents.

Karim describes each step in achieving the perfect look for festive occasions:

Begin with an even complexion

“We start with Dr.Hauschka Translucent Make-up 00 Porcelain. This colour serves as a foundation to make the face appear lighter and bring out its radiance. We follow this with Translucent Make-up in a different shade to conceal redness and minor imperfections. Select the colour that best matches your natural skin tone. Concealer 01 can be used to cover up any blemishes or dark areas under the eyes – it may be helpful to apply it to the entire nose and mouth area as well. To set the creamy make-up, use the powder puff to pat Translucent Face Powder Compact evenly onto the face. This results in a more even, balanced complexion and gives you a longer-lasting look.”

Alternatively use Illuminating Powder instead of Translucent Face Powder Compact for subtle luminosity, instant uplift and perfect for a festive make-up.

Bronzing Powder creates sun-kissed highlights, and world wide is our largest selling make-up item.

Dr. Hauschka Bronzing Powder adds charm to your look, as though you have been kissed by the sun. With Bronzing Powder on the Dr. Hauschka Powder Brush, begin in the middle of the forehead and work your way down to the chin using circular motions – first on one side, then the other. Bronzing Powder is also ideal for adding contours to the face, giving it a more harmonious appearance. If your face is round, for example, you can use the Powder Brush to apply it to the lower cheek area. To determine the right placement, use the cheekbone as your guide and apply the powder about one thumb-width below it. Then, working from the edge of the face inwards, spread the powder as far as the side of your nose.”

A dab of warm red for glowing cheeks

“To keep the focus on the eyes and lips, we only apply a touch of rouge. But the cheeks should still have a healthy glow. We achieve this with Rouge Powder 04 Soft Terracotta for warm toned skin. Starting at the temples, blend it down towards the top of the cheekbones. For a festive glow, use Eyeshadow 09 Ivory to apply shimmering highlights to the temples and cheeks.”

Tip:  Smile when you apply blusher, to place colour on the ‘apples’ of the cheeks.

You may find Rouge Powder 03 Blushing Rose is more flattering for a cool toned skin, and 04 Soft Terracotta for a warm toned skin.  So how do you tell your skin tone?  Those who suit gold jewellery best are warm toned and those who suit silver jewellery best are cool toned.

 Glamorous eyes

Tip: Apply eye make-up by looking downwards into a magnifying mirror.

“This look showcases the eyes. I have selected a pale shade for the lid and dark tones for the contours. Apply Eyeshadow 09 Ivory to the entire upper lid, blending it upwards past the lid crease to fade to the brow. Accentuate the crease of the eyelid using 02 Light Brown from the Dr. Hauschka Eyeshadow Palette, applying the colour back and forth in a gentle curve along the crease to create a light shadow.

Complete the look using the darkest shade from the Eyeshadow Palette, 04 Anthracite. Use the Eye Definer Brush to dab this colour along the upper lash line, just the residue on the brush to the lower lash line. Apply using the Eye Definer Brush starting at the middle of the upper lash line, first dabbing towards the inner corner of the eye and then from the middle towards the outside. Once in place, the eyeshadow serves as a helpful guide for applying Eyeliner Liquid Black. This should now be dabbed over the eyeshadow, first working inwards from the middle and then, after turning the brush, outwards from the middle. Finish by using Eyeliner to draw a curve upwards along the outer lash line. Finally, apply Volume Mascara Black to the lashes. Depending on the desired intensity, brush onto the upper lashes up to three times; the lower lashes should only be brushed once lightly.

The colours 02 Light Brown, 03 Soft Grey and 04 Anthracite from the Eyeshadow Stone Colours Palette can also be used to fill in the eyebrows. Select the shade that best matches your hair colour. Brush the eyeshadow gently into the eyebrows to highlight and shape them.

Tip: With an eye brow bush apply a little Eye Contour Day Balm to the brows which will calm any wayward brow hairs, giving a more professional looking brow.  Brows frame the face and enhance your eyes.

The finishing touch: warm red on the lips

First, use Lipliner 02 Warm Red to contour the lower lip, then press the lips together firmly. This leaves an impression on the contour of the upper lip that can easily be intensified. Next, fill in the lips completely using Lipliner. This sets the lipstick and lends more depth to its colour. It also keeps the lipstick from running. Now apply Lipstick 04 Warm Red to the entire lower lip, press the lips together, and apply again to completely cover the lips. Repeat these steps. Next, blot using a tissue, leave it on the lips and apply powder to the lips using a powder puff. Remove the tissue and repeat the application using Lip Brush and a fresh amount of Lipstick 04 Warm Red.

Finishing Tip: Use Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner to set your make-up.  Close your eyes and mist lightly onto the face from a distance of some 30 centimetres.

Have fun, looking fabulous!

Dear Eyes… Make-up Tips

Key Visual Dear Eyes_Press

To achieve a professional eyeshadow application you must have:

A) Superb quality brushes.
Look after them and they will last years and years, giving you professional eye make-up every time.  Dear Eyes… also features a particularly high quality Eye Definer Brush and Eyeshadow Blender Brush.

B) Magnifying mirror.
Make sure you place it so you look downwards into it.  This is all about seeing the entire eye contour.

Application Tips:

1) There’s a natural valley/shadow close to your nose, so apply the shimmer Rose all over your lid. Keep to light colours near the nose to enhance your eyes.

2) Then apply the shimmer Shell under the brow to highlight.

3) With your Eye Definer Brush apply matte Chocolate to the eye contour and outer eye lid, always in the direction from the outer eye to the inner – this makes a huge difference. We have a tendency to apply the other way, and end up with all this colour at our outer eye, instead of in the contour as it should be.  This then ‘drags’ the eye down, through having shadow in the wrong place.

4) Blend with Eyeshadow Blender Brush

5) Apply Kajal Eye Pencil Black, really working it into the upper lash line.  Soft lines only this season, so use the sponge at the other end of the pencil and smudge.  Then to ‘set’ the Kajal Eye Pencil, use Chocolate and the Eye Definer Brush and press into Kajal.

8) Apply Volume Mascara Black from the base of the lashes, and zig zag upwards.  In your magnifying mirror looking downwards, you can do this with each eye shut or nearly shut.

Doing things differently…

Screen Shot 2013-10-10 at 4.18.38 PM

There’s some common questions that regularly feature for both new and existing customers. We do do things differently from the way you are likely to have been taught with conventional products.

It’s important to our team here at Dr. Hauschka Australia that you are getting the most beneficial results from your Products and our Daily Rituals and here’s how…

1) Cleansing
We have two cleansers for your daily cleansing needs.
Why? Because your skin has differing cleansing requirements at each end of the day.

Cleansing Cream gently deep cleanses after the night time elimination activity of your skin and also prepares your skin for day time protection.

How to use:
a) Mix with water to create an emulsion, not a paste
b) Cleanse with our gentle ‘Press and Roll’ technique, do not a scrub.

See our Morning Ritual Video

Cleansing Milk is your make-up and eye make-up remover plus it cleans your skin from the dirt and dust it picks up during the day. Gentle and effective cleansing that does not disrupt the skin’s acid mantle and therefore supports our no night cream stance.

Screen Shot 2013-10-30 at 1.18.32 PM

2) Toners

Our Toners are not to be used on cotton pads, they are hydrating treatment products containing active botanicals and are different from a conventional toner.

Use: Close your eyes and mist directly onto skin.

Conventional toners are used on cotton wool (which absorbs a huge amount of product by the way) to remove residual cleansing product.

Clarifying Toner contains Echinacea for its anti-bacterial properties and Daisy for its anti-inflammatory benefits. Facial Toner contains Witch Hazel for its astringent properties and one of our key ingredients, balancing Anthyllis.

Tip: Hydrate your skin with our Toner at any time. We keep a bottle in our desk to hydrate our skin during the day.

3) Doing it differently with day care
We only need to use a small amount of Day Care because our formulas are all so concentrated, for instance there’s 30 organic or biodynamic roses in every tube of Rose Day Cream!

How to use:
a) Warm a large pea size between the palms of your hands to melt the plant waxes
b) Apply using the entirety of your palms from the centre of the face outwards in the direction of lymph flow
c) Apply to skin still moist from Toner to ensure even and economical application

Please note: If you didn’t apply in this manner you would think Rose Day Cream, particularly, is way too thick and you would ‘overuse’ it.

Screen Shot 2013-10-15 at 10.40.09 AM

4) No Night Cream

Your skin metabolises and eliminates during the night time. Think of it as your skin needing to ‘breathe’. Using oil free night care supports this process. One month, a skin cell cycle, and you won’t need any more convincing!

a) If you feel your skin needs a ‘little more’ mist your Toner a second time in the evening.
b) Cleanse early in the evening, apply Moisturising Mask, removing prior to bedtime if you feel your skin is going through a stage of needing more moisture.

Night time products:

a) Toner
b) Toner and Regenerating Serum
c) Instead of Toner in the evening, Rhythmic Conditioners for a 30 night treatment. Skin cell cycle is 28-30 days.
d) Instead of Toner, Intensive Treatment 01, 02, 03, 04 or 05 as a complete treatment product in the one bottle and used in the morning and evening.

“I am only a couple of weeks into the ‘no night cream’ regime, I’m using Toner and Serum, and it has been the biggest shock to realise that I don’t need heavy night creams. My skin looks great in the mornings and my eyes haven’t been ‘puffy’. I should have done this much, much earlier.”

5) Colour and Care
As your skin improves, to that typical Dr. Hauschka healthy and radiant skin, you should need less Translucent Make-up but if you do need more coverage initially, use a double application of Translucent Make-up.

Tip: Always ‘set’ your make-up with Translucent Powder Loose or Translucent Powder Compact, alternatively my favourite at the moment is Illuminating Powder which gives an instant uplift to your complexion. You’ll really notice this clever powder in photos, as the light reflects off the subtle luminosity.
