Skin Care Concept

As a result, we have developed individual skin care plans for the various different skin conditions. All of these share the commonality of three skin care steps at night (cleanse, tone and revitalise with serum) and the nourishing trio in the morning. This trio of cleansing, toning and moisturising is optimally tailored to the skin’s morning and day time needs. Cleansing removes the excess metabolic products that the skin has excreted over night. In the second skin care step, aqueous medicinal plant preparations tone the skin while a select daytime skin care product moisturises it and protects it against environmental influences during the day.

But that’s not all. You make as much of a difference to the success of your skin care as the Dr. Hauschka products themselves. “People need two kinds of beauty – inner and outer.” Elisabeth Sigmund, co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, was well aware of this. It all starts with the way in which you use the Dr. Hauschka products and establish a dialogue with both these and your skin. After all, the key to your beauty lies in paying yourself some attention.

Interview with Barbara Becheru

Face Care Product Manager at WALA Heilmittel GmbH and Dr. Hauschka esthetician, about the special use of Dr. Hauschka daytime skin care

Barbara, you are both a product manager and a Dr. Hauschka esthetician. That’s quite unusual. How did it come about?

I had an eye-opening experience during a Dr. Hauschka skin care treatment. As the Dr. Hauschka esthetician was treating my face, she commented that my feet were often cold. She could see this in my face! At the time, I was already a Dr. Hauschka product manager but the further training enabled me to delve deeper into the Dr. Hauschka product and treatment cosmos. In doing so, I realised that our treatment and our products simply belong together. After all, Elisabeth Sigmund, co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, initially developed the products in her beauty studio for treating her customers.

So can I only use Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products with the aid of an esthetician?

No, of course not. It’s far more about doing something good for yourself with your everyday skin care; giving yourself a treatment and paying yourself some attention. It’s all to do with self-appreciation and self-care. And that begins in the morning with a special kind of facial cleansing. The basic product for this is Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream with almond meal and medicinal plant extracts. It’s applied in a unique press and roll manner (see video below) and acts as an example of how closely our products are linked to our treatment.

What exactly do you mean by a cleansing product that is linked to the treatment?

Lymph stimulation plays a central role in the Dr. Hauschka treatment. We use brushes and our hands to activate the lymph flow in the lymphatic system. This is a kind of cleansing system in the body, which excretes excess metabolic products for example. We therefore use lymph stimulation to support the skin with its natural activities, keep it healthy and cleanse it.

But what has lymph stimulation got to do with facial cleansing at home?

By correctly applying the Cleansing Cream, you can stimulate the lymph flow in your skin. To do this, roll your hands from the top to the bottom of your face and from the centre outwards in the direction of lymph flow. The combination of the product and manner of application result in a cleansed complexion. It may initially take you slightly longer to use the product as the movements will be new to you. However, the time I take during this process is time that gives me something back.

The Dr. Hauschka skin care regime for mornings comprises three steps. Cleansing is followed with the second step of toning.

That’s right. The toning products are aqueous medicinal plant preparations, such as Facial Toner. What makes this special is that you spray it directly onto your face rather than onto a cotton pad as you would a conventional toner. Even the delicate mist of spray feels delightful. I then use my hands to gently press the product into my skin.

A further lovely way of being in touch with myself and a kind of self-treatment?

Exactly. These are the little daily rituals, the periods of time-out from everyday life, my five minutes that are mine alone. This time in the bathroom allows me to enjoy some mindfulness and consciously breathe in and exhale.

That almost sounds like a yoga workout. But I still need to start my day and I’ve not yet done the third step – moisturising.

Yes, and this is a very important step as the daytime skin care protects the skin against external influences such as the wind or dry air from air conditioning systems. It can do this through the high-quality oils and waxes that form the basis of the products. However, our daytime skin care products do more than just protect the skin. Each composition is also carefully tailored to the skin’s changing needs thanks to special medicinal plant extracts, helping it to restore its natural balance.

What do you mean ‘changing needs’? Isn’t my skin always the same? Either dry or sensitive for example?

When I talk to customers before a treatment, I’ve often noticed that they can precisely describe how their skin feels. Whether it is taut or perhaps unsettled or oily. What is interesting is that this feeling may have changed by their next treatment appointment. In winter, for example, the skin tends to be drier, or at stressful times of life, it tends to become more blemished. Depending on the skin’s varying needs, we can offer the right daytime skin care to help regulate it.

Is there also a special way of applying the daytime skin care products?

We warm the moisturising product between the palms of the hands, to melt the waxes, and apply to skin, still moist from Toner, using the palms of both hands and apply from centre outwards in direction of lymph flow and/or press gently into your skin. This is the correct way to apply and it’s a more sensual and emotional experience by paying proper attention to yourself, feeling in touch with yourself while applying the products and immersing yourself in the way you feel. The natural scent of the products furthermore conveys moods. Each morning, the same delicate scent fills my nose and gives me the space I need to enjoy my skin care. That is my daily ritual. The Dr. Hauschka products are so much more.

We are celebrating 50 years of cosmetics culture

We serve people, not markets

When Dr. Rudolf Hauschka founded WALA in 1935, he certainly asked himself these and other similar questions. And he found the answers in products obtained from nature as well as the establishment of the WALA Foundation, to which WALA Heilmittel GmbH belongs. Over time, these answers resulted in the development of a very special cosmetics culture with a clear objective: the sustainable creation of persistent values for people rather than a quick profit.

The locations in which we develop and manufacture Dr. Hauschka products are closely linked to our responsibilities towards the environment and the people we deal with. We have been based in Eckwälden since 1967 and have made a conscious decision to remain there. WALA’s biodynamic medicinal herb garden, product development facilities and product manufacturing facilities have all been located in this agricultural region in southern Germany at the foot of the Swabian Jura Mountains since the 1950s. Eckwälden is a small village where shepherds drive their flocks of sheep through. At least, that is one description of it. On the other hand, we have brought a real cosmopolitan feel to the village. For instance, when international visitors come to see us, but also when organic raw materials for our products are brought here from all over the world or we prepare the transport documents for the shipment of the over 130 Dr. Hauschka products. Shipments that will go to customers in some 40 countries worldwide.

And the WALA Foundation?

All profits generated by WALA Heilmittel GmbH initially go to the Foundation as its owner. This then invests them in the GmbH’s development. After all, its sole purpose is to promote WALA’s prosperous development. The Foundation appoints our GmbH’s management and ensures that our cosmetics culture shapes everyday business practices. It enables us to invest in not only the quality of our products but also the development of our around 1,000 employees as well as sustainable projects in both Germany and other countries from which we obtain raw materials for our products. The WALA Foundation provides us with the necessary independence and freedom to continue our responsible use of money as well as to fulfil a certain cultural mission: to develop and manufacture natural products that care for people’s skin, have healing properties and promote beauty.

An interview with Dr. Johannes Stellmann

Managing Director of WALA Heilmittel GmbH, about beauty, money as an enabling instrument and corporate responsibility

Dr. Hauschka has embodied a very special cosmetics culture since 1967. What does this involve in your eyes?

It starts with the way in which we develop and manufacture our products and continues with our skin care treatments. However, the overall driving force for our company, our origins and our use of resources are also all of a cultural nature. For me, the guiding principle is ‘different from day one’.

Different from day one? What was so different in the early days of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care?

Simply take a look at the way Elisabeth Sigmund worked. She essentially started to develop her own natural cosmetics in the early 1930s. These eventually then came onto the market in cooperation with us in 1967. If you think about it carefully, you will see that she developed these products for over 35 years before they hit shop shelves. She took a great deal of time for her work. This process was totally different to all others. Then, there are our origins. WALA was actually founded as a result of a charitable enquiry when Dr. Ita Wegman, co-founder of anthroposophic medicine, asked Dr. Rudolf Hauschka to develop medicines without any use of alcohol. These were intended for children, the elderly and the seriously ill. The result was the alcohol-free WALA medicines. This shows that we are actually a cultural organisation. We wear an economic gown but I believe that we are driven by a clearly cultural stimulus. Even our finances show that we are still a hybrid company.

WALA as a hybrid company? What does that mean?

‘Hybrid’ means that my commercial framework contains a large charitable element. This makes us very different from Bill Gates, for example, who earned a huge amount of money with monopoly pensions and then pledged to give away 90 percent of his assets. I am always intrigued at how people can divide their consciousness in such a way that they can do something to earn money and then be charitable or generous afterwards. We want to find a business structure that means we do not have to blush when the value is created. To do this, we have a different mindset from the start. We look at the creation of a product followed by its use in a different cultural arc. This charitableness that others often incorporate at the end of their life is something we make part of the here and now, of everyday practice.

You referred to WALA as a cultural organisation. That surprises me as it manufactures medicines and natural cosmetics. What makes WALA a cultural organisation?

On a basic level, the culture dictates that we regard ourselves as ‘enablers’ rather than ‘makers’ with regard to both our medicines and our cosmetics. We support healing and flourishing. We do not aim to replace or suppress the immune system with WALA medicines, but to support it. Similar applies to Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products too. We support the skin to help it return to a normal skin condition. And in doing so, we actually train it. From this perspective, we are a training institute at product level. However, this is not in the form of a service; the trainer is a product, and I find that fantastic. We are very process oriented. And we are not about instantaneousness; we are not ‘this second’ people who offer rapid-effect creams. We are about allowing things time. Our company thrives on time, for example during gradual skin care treatments that I take my time to enjoy or manufacturing processes that take time to mature. This has a cultural dimension for me.

You once said that Dr. Hauschka develops products for people, not markets. Can you elaborate?

Take our Rose Day Cream for example. This has been part of our product range since day one, since 1967. It does not have any right to eternally exist per se but I do not currently see any reason why we should remove it from the market. I also choose to ignore standard product life cycle theories, which dictate that Rose Day Cream should be removed from the product range after ten years. That is not the way we work because this product is a classic. Why? Because we develop products for people, not markets. Elisabeth Sigmund asked what people need. She never asked where a market could be found, but instead always focused on the requirements of people’s skin. This is a completely different approach. It is about needs. And this approach continues to guide us today. We start with the question of what people need rather than where there is a market that we might be able to tap into. We prefer to put our money into product development, the manufacturing process and high-quality raw materials.

It is thanks to the WALA Foundation that you have this freedom to invest the money where you choose. What is the Foundation’s role?

The WALA Foundation is the sole owner of WALA Heilmittel GmbH. It offers us the major advantage that capital cannot be taken from the company as a result of either private interests or inheritance. In other regards, however, things are far more difficult for us than for other companies because we cannot obtain equity from external sources. In other words, we cannot approach investors and ask them to join us and bring a few hundred million euros with them. That road is closed to us. We operate without a safety net.

You use the profits in a very special way and say that this money is an enabling instrument for you. Can you elaborate?

Firstly, we view money as an integral part of all activities rather than just from a profit perspective. Right from the outset in the value-added chain, we ask ourselves how we can fulfil the responsibility that we bear. For example, if I pick up a jumper in a shop and buy it, I essentially trigger a manufacturing order for the new jumper that will replace it on the shelf. This means that I cannot remove myself from being responsible for what happens in the manufacturing chain. Ten years ago, I could have said that I did not know anything about this but in today’s digital age, I can find out about the manufacturing processes. If I take this responsibility seriously and transfer it to us here at WALA, I have to think forwards from the value-added chain to the product. That means I have to pay attention to how the raw materials I buy are produced. And then, I have to look at how we actually manufacture the product. And if I have done my job well, then hopefully we will generate a profit. The question then naturally arises of how we will use this profit. It is of huge benefit to us that we do not have to serve owners. Instead, for example, we can enable new partnerships for organic raw materials, which might not be produced otherwise. This was the case with shea butter from Burkina Faso, castor oil and mango butter from India and essential rose oil from Ethiopia. Alternatively, we can enable partners to become completely independent from us. Initially, project partners often rely on us 100%. We are extremely committed to making them independent within a few years whenever possible.

It sounds like the money you put into projects is a seed that multiplies as it grows.

Most definitely. And if we stick with the idea of the sower who has to accept that not every seed will grow, this also applies to us. You could naturally see this as us wasting money, but we are wiser after doing so than we were beforehand. When I start something, I also say “yes” to failure. I cannot develop without making mistakes. These are simply part of the renewal process. I therefore always talk about the ‘error compost’. One example is our new Dr. Hauschka Make-up line, which was launched at the start of 2017. We started developing the new line in 2011 and 99% of what we did went in the bin. But if we had not done this, we would have developed something mainstream black, rectangular, circular. We would never have devised the curve of constant width as the design for the powder trays and would probably never have decided to use dark purple rather than black for the packaging.

What is your vision for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care? What does the future hold?

The principle of being ‘different from day one’ will continue to guide us. We are committed to ensuring that our products meet both our own and all legal requirements with regard to quality and safety. However, we also always say that we try to forge our own path. My conduct is shaped by the inner commitment to doing things differently to others. And this takes courage. It also fits well with our central idea of learning as we work and working as we learn. Errors, failures and mistakes form part of this. Without them, I cannot learn.

How many countries are involved in you being able to enjoy a Dr. Hauschka Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Milk in your bathroom?

For example, the essential lemon oil comes from Italy and the lemongrass oil from Nepal. Field horsetail for structure-giving extracts comes from wild collections in German-speaking countries. Sage for fortifying extracts is usually grown on our Demeter farm whereas the nourishing oils found in the Body Milk come from jojoba and olives grown in Argentina and Spain respectively. Our employees combine these organic raw materials in Eckwälden to produce Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Milk. Once bottled and packaged, the finished product is supplied to users in some 40 countries on all continents.

We are celebrating 50 years of cosmetics culture

The art of skin care and make-up

Production and research

Would you describe your face cream as a piece of art? When it comes to Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, we believe this is a justifiable statement. And would you attribute a personality to a plant? We do and closely study its biography when developing and producing new skin care products. We examine your skin’s needs, then look for the medicinal plants, waxes and oils that best help you meet them. We combine the ingredients in such a way that they are in harmony with one another and your skin. This is the only way to create a product with a successful, artistic composition.

Our aim is to create effective product formulations. As such, we take great effort to constantly optimise the ways in which our plants and other raw materials are used in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products. Fortunately, we already have a huge wealth of information: the knowledge and experience that we have gained through the development and production of  WALA Medicines since 1935. Elisabeth Sigmund added to this knowledge base. In the 1930s, she started to study centuries-old medical books in monastic libraries. Elisabeth discovered forgotten medicinal plants and minerals with benefits for the skin, which she used to develop the formulations for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. Today, we are able to combine the knowledge from days gone by with modern methods.

Throughout the years we have become specialists in the research of plant based raw materials and, in spring 2017, we moved into a new laboratory building to continue this work. There, we optimise development methods and look at highly practical research questions posed by our colleagues. For example, our gardeners often request information on ingredients to determine when these are most nutrient rich and ready to be harvested; or our raw materials warehouse would like to know how to create the best conditions for storing the essential oils. Our Development team also works in close cooperation with external specialists as well as universities and uses publications to share their knowledge.

Our new laboratory building

Lastly, we conduct quality control in our new laboratory building. Not only the finished products are tested to ensure that they are safe and of highest quality possible but also the raw materials we use for our skin care and make-up undergo quality tests.

Authorities nowadays demand that skin care and make-up manufacturers conduct extremely extensive analyses to proof the safety of products. However, our tests go above and beyond the required scope. We combine the knowledge that we have gained over several decades with the findings presented in the latest scientific literature and use the results to conduct additional analyses. Ultimately, this supplemented knowledge enables us to compose the best possible skin care and make-up products for you.

Interview

with Herwig Judex, member of the WALA Foundation, and Professor Florian Stintzing, Head of Science at WALA Heilmittel GmbH, the company behind the brand Dr. Hauschka Skin Care About the research, development and production of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Make-up.

Mr Judex, you’ve been with WALA since 1971. At the time, Dr. Hauschka Skin Care had only been on the market for four years – as a second brand that complemented WALA Medicines. Did the knowledge of the production of medicines influence the formulations for the skin care products?

Herwig Judex: The formulations for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products were developed in cooperation with doctors, estheticians and pharmacists. The experience from the production of medicines naturally played a major role during the development. There were also three key values: helping, caring and healing. Our skin care products needed to be all of these things. This explains why they were originally called ‘Healing Cosmetics’,a name that has since been changed for legal reasons. Despite this, helping, caring and healing is a package and remained the concept under which the products were originally created.

Mr Stintzing, you are in charge of WALA’s science department. Is the concept of ‘helping, caring and healing’ still important to you today when developing Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products?

Florian Stintzing: Yes, there is still a healing stimulus behind the products as Mr Judex says. There is also the question of how we can help our customers. We don’t follow the latest trends, but instead look at what people actually need. A person suffering from atopic dermatitis needs support and products that care for the skin, men and women ask for skin care for their face and body, and people who wear make-up also have their own special requirements. As a natural skin care and make-up manufacturer, we want to develop formulations that really focus on the individuals and enable them to feel happy in their own skin each and every day. As such, we don’t have any short-lived skin care, instead our products address basic needs.

How have development and production of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products changed over the years?

Judex: It has changed in many ways. In the 1960s and 70s, we created products based on our experience-based knowledge. The idea was the most decisive factor. We mixed things together and tested whether the product could do what it was intended to. If so, it was produced without any further requirements. If we wanted to assess the quality of a plant from our medicinal herb garden, we looked at its growth. If we added too much fertiliser and a plant that would usually only be 30 centimetres tall actually grew to a metre, it could not be used in production. We had the belief and inner certainty that the things which we had carefully considered and thought out were right. And it was right. Nowadays, that’s no longer how things work, of course. We have to conduct stability and application tests and provide far more detailed information about the substances. This is now a legal requirement for skin care and make-up manufacturers in Germany and it is important because the people nowadays demand reassurance of safety.

Experience-based knowledge used to be important. Mr Stintzing, can you analytically confirm this old knowledge now?

Stintzing: Yes. The plant that grows differently is a good example. We recently tried to domesticate chicory, i.e. to grow it in our medicinal herb garden. This is used in our Soothing Intensive Treatment among other products. It ended up looking like a dandelion. You could say that its nature was distorted. It flourished too well here in our garden. The plant’s appearance differs from the one that tends to grow in poorer quality, dry soil. You can’t create a stable aqueous extract from a plant that has grown like that. A difference in scent is also noticeable. You can furthermore demonstrate the difference analytically, for instance through the fact that the pH level doesn’t fall during the extract procedure as the lactic acid fermentation process doesn’t start. Even with all the technological advances, which are welcomed and a good thing, it is still essential to use our senses and pay attention to obvious differences – to closely monitor things. And we do this by using the experience that WALA has built up over more than 80 years.

But you can no longer bring products to the market based solely on experience-based knowledge. You have to fulfil legal requirements. What analyses do you conduct?

Stintzing: It’s about customer safety. The raw materials for our cosmetic products are tested for characteristic properties, but also foreign substances such as pesticides and heavy metals. Tests are an important means of proving and documenting a certain quality level but also of learning more about the raw materials used. As such, we often test for far more things than legally required by precisely stipulated regulations on testing. Ultimately, however, you can only do a test well if you know the raw material’s biography. For example, where the plant grew. This is the only way for you to know what kind of contaminants it might contain as a result of its location. And only then can you specifically test for these pollutants. If you ignore this factor, you might end up testing the wrong things.

A plant’s biography is an unusual concept. Can you elaborate?

Stintzing: We think about a product based on its raw materials. We ask ourselves where the plant comes from. Where, under what climate conditions and in what soil it was grown, how it was cultivated and when it was harvested. The origin of a plant matters, as highlighted by our example of chicory. And the future, i.e. where the plant ends up, namely in the skin care or make-up product, is based on what has happened in the past. This is what makes the idea of a biography so important to us. Everything found in the raw materials is developed during the plant’s biographical journey. And at some point, this all ends up in the composition. Anything I don’t do prior to this, from a procedural perspective or even in terms of qualitative selection, I can no longer give to the product at a later stage.

Judex: A plant’s biography covers all the essentials. After all, we can’t get anywhere with mere facts and figures.

Is the approach of working with your senses and experience something that makes WALA special?

Judex: Yes, definitely.

Stintzing: However, it only works if you are familiar with the plants. You have to know where they usually grow, what their natural environment is, what they normally look like and what is going on if they don’t look like that. In view of this, our plant laboratory technicians and employees from the Cosmetics Development and Analytical Development departments regularly help out with the harvests in our garden, during which our gardeners teach them a great deal about the plants and their special features. This forms a direct link to the raw materials, something which is extremely important as it prevents the anonymity widely found today.

If a plant’s biography is so important, doesn’t this mean you can only harvest and process wild plants? Is it possible to cultivate plants at all?

Judex: You can also cultivate plants naturally, for example if you want the roots or leaves to grow in a certain way. However, you always have to remain within certain limits, as highlighted by the example of chicory.

Stintzing: The influence of the location can also be analytically proven. For example, tests have shown that edible berries from Scandinavia are richer in secondary plant nutrients than those from Central and Southern Europe. This knowledge is extremely important for medicinal plants. In addition, the temperature, the light and soil conditions also have a major impact on quality. One example of a case in which we were able to directly prove analytical differences is sage, which we use in products such as our Sage Mint Deodorant. The soil properties, such as the pH level, are particularly important for this plant. In consideration of this finding, our gardeners have created different types of soil in our medicinal herb garden for the plants to develop their vital strengths and inner being.

Judex: Quality is a factor determined by far more than just quantity. Today, we are instructed to detect quantitative differences so as to decide whether or not a raw material is used. However, as Mr Stintzing says, quality is about the entire biography. How did the plant come into being, how were the seeds cultivated that were then sown?

Do we have to revise ‘old’ knowledge based on new findings?

Judex: ‘Revise’ is a weighted word. After all, we’re talking about adding to our knowledge. What is then done with this is a whole other matter. For instance, whether you succeed in combining the artistic process with the knowledge.

Stintzing: We are increasing our wealth of knowledge and building on our experience. However, our products also have an artistic quality to them. A product is a composition. It naturally has to be well crafted and must not separate, for example. However, the ingredients must also be in harmony with one another and with people. I firmly believe that this artistic aspect appeals to people at a certain level. They don’t have to know what is in the skin care product. Instead, they experience the product as harmonious or inharmonious for them. Our aim is to develop authentic products to meet our customers’ needs.

Showering TIPS

Something you do every day, so you may not think too much about it, however, here’s some helpful showering tips.

How long in the shower?

Water is drying to the skin, maximum time in the shower is 10 minutes. You don’t want to be wasting water either.

To exfoliate or not to exfoliate?

Your skin will slough off naturally skin cells when they are good and ready, from using a sponge, flannel or body brush. In the meantime those cells are protective and help your skin to retain moisture. And please don’t use anything that contains microbeads for both our environment and your skin.

How hot is too hot?

Very hot water in the shower exacerbates dryness, itchy, irritated skin and eczema by removing your skin’s naturally occurring oils. Recommended maximum temperature is 43 degrees Celsius. Think comfortably warm, not hot.

How do you protect your face skin in the shower?

TIP: Don’t ever put your face directly under the shower rose, water under pressure is far too harsh for the delicate skin of your face.

Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

What about your feet?

You may be thinking your soap or Body Wash that you’ve just washed your body with will clean your feet as well on the way down. No, your feet definitely need their own wash and remember to do in between your toes, then thoroughly rinse so they’re not slippery.

Feet care: Perspiration and moisture is the perfect environment in which harmful bacteria may grow. Protect against foot odour or fungal infections.

We highly recommend the application of Deodorising Foot Cream for a healthy, balanced environment for your feet and/or Body Silk Powder to absorb moisture after shower.

TIP: A sprinkle of Body Silk Powder in your shoes keeps them smelling nice and fresh too.

Screen Shot 2016-07-11 at 12.13.06 PM

Using overly alkaline soap is drying

Keep it effective and gentle with Body Washes made with plant surfactants and quince seed extract to help your skin retain moisture combined with nourishing plant oils. Surfactants do the work, not bubbles, and our Cleansing Sponge helps Body Washes to lather.

Tip: Anything that’s continually moist will attract mould. Have two Cleansing Sponges on the go, one in the wash and one in use. Put through the laundry wash every couple of days and hang out on the line for a dose of UV.

Drying

Pat your skin dry, don’t rub after shower, vigorous rubbing means you’ll lose more of your natural oils.

Restore

Restore your skin after shower with nourishing Body Cream, Body Milk or Body Oil. There’s much more skin on your body than your face so natural and organic body care is just as important.

Your skin should still be slightly moist for application of Body Cream, Body Milk or Body Oil for even and economical application. With Body Oil and moist skin you’re making an oil/water emulsion directly onto your skin for rapid absorption and long lasting aromatic care.

How to Enhance Your Eyes

Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar

Choosing the perfect eyeshadow

To really enhance your eyes, to make them look more alluring, bigger, brighter and the whites appear whiter, then choose eyeshadow colours that fall opposite to your iris colour on the colour wheel, as opposed to colours that are the same or similar colour as your eyes or colours that match your clothes.

Complementary colours

Colour wheel
Colour wheel

The opposite of blue is orange/golds/browns

The opposite of green is lilac/burgundy/pinks

The opposite of brown is aqua/blues/greens

Using complementary colours provides the most contrast between your iris colour and your shadow colour, therefore it’s this contrast that enhances your eyes.

Suggestions to enhance your iris colour

Blue Eyes

Hazel Eyes are multiple colours so choose the same recommendations as for brown eyes using the colour wheel concept to contrast differing colour flecks in your eyes to highlight.

Aside from complementary colours, everyone needs a brown, taupe and neutral shades palette too, This also includes brown eyes, which can use browns, just need to stay away from muddy browns. Eye & Brow Palette with matte shades for both eyes and brows.

Application Tips

  1. Always apply eyeshadow from outer towards inner, not the other way around, for a professional and uplifting look to your eyeshadow application. When you apply from inner to outer you end up with colour dragging your eye downwards.
  2. When you’re applying your deepest colour to the crease, always keep your eyes open to ensure correct placement of the colour.

7 Tips for Finding Calm During a Busy Day

Strategies to slow down and smell the roses

Our daily lives are busy, very much so when juggling work and family, and sometimes we forget to take a moment to appreciate the small, special moments as we rush from one thing to the next.

1. Morning cuppa

Don’t rush your morning cuppa, take the time to really enjoy it, it makes for a good beginning to the day.

2. Take a walk in the fresh air

Movement and deep breathing aids relaxation, and if you’re in front of a computer much of the day, this is even more important. It may be a walk down to your local cafe to pick up lunch, it may be that a morning or evening walk is already part of your daily ritual. Being outside you can take a moment to appreciate the seasons, sunsets or sunrises, a jacaranda in full bloom…

3. Meal times

When your preparing dinner and eating your meal take a moment to consider how your food was grown, eat slowly and really taste each mouthful.

4. Take a moment

When you find yourself rushing, really make the effort to be in the moment, stop what you’re doing to actively listen to your child or partner, if you’re busy cooking dinner and there’s a beautiful sunset, pop outside and enjoy it for a moment. There’s unexpected joy to be found in the little things.

5. Bathing

At day’s end there’s nothing quite like closing the bathroom door and taking a bath with Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence or Rose Nurturing Bath Essence, both of which are protective milky formulations. After bath stay away from your device(s) and take yourself off to bed for a restful night’s sleep.

6. Active relaxation

Find out what works for you, it may be coffee with a friend, yoga, sport, baking, creative endeavours, a good book – there will be something that provides active relaxation for you and helps clear your head from busy thoughts.

7. Skin care rituals

Be in the moment during your morning and evening skin care rituals. This is a time when you take the very best care of your skin and look after yourself. Also take a moment to deeply smell nature’s aromas that are contained in every bottle or tube. When we take time to nurture ourselves we feel more able to nurture others.

How is a new Dr. Hauschka product created?

Careful development
Stir together the ingredients, test, done? The development of new Dr. Hauschka products is far from that simple. We take our time and work in large teams when developing every single skin care and make-up product. Once the idea for a new product has been conceived, it is about finding the best possible formulation for it. A formulation in which the individual components are aligned with one another, like in a work of art. One that is more than just the sum of all its individual components.
Who is the target group for the new product? Which packaging works best for it? Is it even possible to obtain the raw materials we want for the formulation in the high quality and quantity we require? And are the desired raw materials safe? With so many questions, where should we even begin? Ideally with the idea for the right ingredients. Our developers give great consideration to this matter.
Their work could be compared to that of an artist using a paint palette and combining the colours to form brand new shades. It is only possible to achieve a good overall composition if the individual shades are in harmony with one another. When composing a formulation, the developers introduce themselves to the people for whom the product is intended. After all, they are developing the product to meet their needs.

Some of the medicinal plants required are cultivated in our medicinal herb garden and on our Demeter farm, the Sonnenhof. We also procure further organic raw materials with the assistance of the raw material buyers from our subsidiary naturamus. The staff in the scientific departments analyse each of the raw materials to ensure that they meet our high quality standards, are well tolerated and comply with legal requirements for cosmetics and natural cosmetics. Sometimes, we even start by researching a new raw material so as to fully understand it.

At the same time, the Packaging Procurement department searches for a suitable container for the new product. Doing so is extremely challenging as we do not use any synthetic preservatives in our natural skin care and make-up. Many of our products require airtight packaging that protects them from the light. For the highly sensitive, purely aqueous Intensive Treatments, we have even developed a special spray head that only allows sterile-filtered air into the container. Normal ambient air would affect the product’s shelf life. Sometimes, however, the packaging is determined by very simple user needs. For instance, the trays in our Eye & Brow Palette are different sizes. This is because experience has shown us that users tend to get through far more of the light shade than the dark one.

These users also test newly developed products before they go on the market – but only after these have already been tested by our Dr. Hauschka estheticians and have passed the tolerability tests. The assessments and comments from these voluntary testers are extremely important to the development team, which may further adapt the formulation based on them. After all, the same rule again applies: customer satisfaction is our number one priority.

An interview with Marie Calas

Group Head of Cosmetics Development at WALA (Dr. Hauschka) on the development of Regenerating Hand Cream and what makes Dr. Hauschka Make-up special

Ms Calas, you work with a team of 10 people to develop the formulations for new Dr. Hauschka products. From where do you get the ideas for these?

Marie Calas: It differs greatly. Some ideas come from the Marketing department, some come from us. Whatever the source though, the users’ needs always come first. For instance, we frequently had people tell us that they wanted more support at night-time. We responded to this by developing Night Serum as the third night care step.

What is the average turnaround from the idea to the finished product?

That depends. If we are just talking about how long it takes to implement a product idea, then the answer is about three years. However, if we are also talking about finding new raw materials for the new product, you can add a further two to three years to this.

So it can take up to six years to develop a new Dr. Hauschka product! Why does it take so long to find new raw materials for the formulations?

To find something, I have to consider specific questions and be open to the answers. That is not something you can plan for. Once we have selected a plant, a lot of hard work begins. This often starts with growing the plant. It is therefore easier if we have chosen plants that grow locally. We try to grow the plant in cooperation with our medicinal herb garden. Harvest time comes and we start to conduct our tests on the little plant material available to us. Our colleagues obtain extracts from the new plants, which we use in our formulation. We look at whether or not it works. Then we have to wait a full year for the next harvest. That is why it takes so long. Incidentally, we have to use the basis of the product, for example the cream base, to form a bridge between the plant and the user. To do this, we need to understand the language of both the plant and the skin.

The cream base acts as a bridge between the plant and the user? The language of the plant and the skin? Can you elaborate with an example?

Let’s take Regenerating Hand Cream. At the start of the development process, we sat down and considered the needs of the people who we envisaged buying the product, or their skin. The regenerating products are aimed at people with mature skin. In other words, people upon whom life has left lasting impressions. These impressions are increasingly visible in the skin, for example in the form of wrinkles, as the vitality and regenerative ability dwindle with age. As a result, the protective function is weakened and the skin becomes thinner and more sensitive. The skin tells us this. We have to meet its needs through the formulation and look for the perfect ingredients for it. Which plants or minerals can best support mature skin and meet its needs? Which ingredients in the formulation best reflect our idea? And which cream base best transfers the plant’s effects to the skin? It is only later that we try to develop the formulation in the laboratory.

Which ingredients did you find were best for mature skin?

The guiding principle for the regenerating skin range comes from red clover. This is a species of clover that we are familiar with from our local meadows, which grow lush and green. Red clover clearly represents vitality and renewal. Its energetic growth is not even slowed when it flowers. There is one other special feature that makes it the perfect plant for revealing the individuality of people with mature skin. Red clover leaves bear an individual white pattern. Every clover plant has its own pattern, its own personality. Red clover can act as a model for a mature, vibrant personality.

Is red clover the only medicinal plant in Regenerating Hand Cream?

No. The red clover is supported by bryophyllum and quince seed extracts. Both of these stimulate renewal and moisture processes. Attention also has to be paid to the protective aspect. In this regard, heat-permeated fatty oils are beneficial. We refer to these as thermal oils. One example is macadamia nut oil. However, fruit oils from plants that concentrate fatty oil in the juicy fruit rather than in the dry seeds are also important for mature skin. Examples include olives and avocados. In addition to their protective and caring properties, fruit oils also bear the vitality of the fruit. This is naturally perfect for Regenerating Hand Cream.

Thermal oils? That sounds unusual. Can you explain?

To a certain extent, fatty oils are representative of their environment. In many cases, the chemical composition enables us to tell whether the oil plants grew in an area where they were exposed to particularly high levels of light or heat. In the Tropics, a plant experiences more heat; in the Nordic regions where summer days can last up to 22 hours, they naturally experience more light. These qualities are stored in the oil and analytically detectable. They benefit people through the composition of the cosmetics. We use several different oils in our formulations in the same way as you would use different colours for a painting or sounds in music. It is all about the composition.

When you talk about product development in this way, it sounds like the work of an artist. Do scientific findings actually play a part?

Oh yes. I genuinely regard the process of development as an artistic process, but also as one that involves a great deal of intuition. However, intuition is not without basis. This is something that is often misunderstood. True intuition requires a lot of work and knowledge. This naturally includes scientific training and extensive knowledge of the ingredients used. At WALA (Dr. Hauschka), many people are involved in phyto-chemical research and analysis. The knowledge obtained by our colleagues provides us with the foundations we require. It completes the picture when we are trying to understand a plant. Scientific research is a piece of the puzzle in an overall context; nothing more, nothing less. As such, we have a great deal of knowledge. However, our wealth of knowledge then has to take somewhat of a back seat. Intuition is the moment when we are working on a project and the answer to something suddenly comes to us, as if out of nowhere. For example, the idea for a plant comes from a wealth of knowledge that was no longer at the forefront of our minds. However, this wealth must still be created and developed.

After selecting the ingredients for the formulation, what were the next steps in developing Regenerating Hand Cream?

We moved on to composing the ‘work of art’ from the carefully considered ingredients. Developing hand care products is generally challenging. On the one hand, they need to be rich, moisturising and protective, while on the other hand, they have to absorb quickly and not leave a greasy film. This is precision work and requires a lot of experience. The first versions of Regenerating Hand Cream that we developed were far too rich and therefore sticky. We developed about 100 different formulations to eventually obtain the perfect result. As a developer, you have to cope with the fact that 99 percent of all attempts are unsatisfactory.

Did you select specific ingredients for the Dr. Hauschka Make-up products like you would for the skin care products?

Of course. After all, the Dr. Hauschka Make-up range is to all intents and purposes the fourth skin care step after cleansing, toning and moisturising. The regulating ingredient, anthyllis, can therefore be found in almost all of our Make-up products, just like it is in almost all of our facial care products. For the same reason, many of the Make-up products for the complexion contain an extract of refining witch hazel. And in the eye make-up products, eyebright (euphrasia) soothes the area around the eyes. Rose, quince… a whole array of supportive medicinal plants are found in the Make-up range. One last very special example is the cane sugar used in our Volume Mascara.

Cane sugar in the Volume Mascara? So, candied lashes?

Yes, sort of. To create volume with the Volume Mascara you need something to coat and shape the fine lashes. We chose cane sugar, and are possibly the only ones who use this ingredient for this purpose. If any form of sugar is used, it is usually beet sugar. But we consciously opted for cane sugar. This is obtained from the energy-packed, green leaves and stalks of the sugar cane. Unlike the sugar beet, this grows above ground, in the light, and is therefore far better suited for the eyes.

What products would your team like to develop?

Recently, the developers were all given the opportunity to spend a year working on not only the jobs from the Marketing department but also a product idea of their own. This produced some very different and very interesting results. This was extremely important. We have to constantly re-assess our possibilities and step outside our comfort zone. That is not just a question of developing formulations.

Has the Marketing department adopted any of your ideas?

Yes, but we cannot yet reveal which product that it.

Is there anything natural and organic skin care can do that conventional skin care cannot?

It is more the other way around. I think that natural skin care and make-up can now offer everything that conventional products advertise. However, natural and organic skin care are also ecologically and socially sustainable.

From the idea to the product: the development process

Correct Cleansing

Screen Shot 2015-04-26 at 2.03.49 pm

Correct Cleansing is the first step towards achieving a healthy and radiant skin.

Why?

Because overly alkaline, lathering, harsh exfoliation (whether by acids or granules) type cleansers are all too severe for your skin.

Your skin needs effective, yet gentle cleansers, that respect the pH of your skin, which is naturally acidic to protect against bacteria, and cleansers that don’t dehydrate the superficial layer. Your skin should feel comfortable after cleansing.

If you have an oily skin those products that ‘strip’ the skin for that ‘squeaky clean’ feeling, that’s a sign that your acid mantle has been disrupted and skin will just produce more oil to compensate.

We have two different cleansers for differing cleansing needs at each end of the day. In the morning, after the night time elimination activity of the skin, your skin needs a gentle yet deep cleanse with Cleansing Cream. In the evening use Soothing Cleansing Milk to cleanse your skin from the dirt and dust it picks up during the day and it’s also your make-up and eye make-up remover.

Soothing Cleansing Milk

We recommend Compress & Hydration for your skin prior to cleansing:

  1. Pour a little Dr. Hauschka Bath Essence into your basin
  2. Disperse with hand hot water
  3. Immerse your Compress Cloth, squeeze out excess water and press onto your skin, repeat twice
  4. Cleanse
  5. Compress or splash with cold water

Why?

Compress and Hydration softens pores to achieve a much deeper cleanse and also ensures you’re using your cleansing products more economically. When you complete your cleanse with splashes of cold water you activate the minute muscle that sits alongside the hair follicle which contracts, helping to remove any remaining dirt. This simple technique leaves your skin feeling soft as well.

Powerful Night Care

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care is formulated to offer you nurturing experiences that benefit your total wellbeing. By day, our Face Care nourishes, protects from the environment and guides your skin to a healthy, balanced state. At night, our water-based Night Care allows skin to breathe freely while supporting its natural processes of renewal and elimination. All our products are NATRUE certified as 100% natural and organic skin care.

Powerful night care with medicinal botanical extracts
Powerful and liberating – oil-free night care

Did you know that at night your skin is very active? We follow this alternating rhythm every day of our lives. During the day our bodies open up to the environment and nourishment, while the night is used to process and prepare for the new day ahead.

Your skin uses your nightly rest period to thoroughly regenerate from within as it does not need to protect itself against environmental influences at night. The skin can open up during this phase and optimally cleanse itself from within by metabolic elimination.

The next morning your skin looks wonderful and recuperated when you support it with the right night care.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care supports this nightly regeneration process with aqueous, revitalising night care products that respect the skin’s natural rhythm. These are based on medicinal botanical extracts, which offer the skin important stimuli. Back in the 1930s, Elisabeth Sigmund discovered that night creams actually hinder the skin’s vital night-time processes. When she worked with us in the 1960s, this concept was fundamental in the development of our night care.

But what exactly does it mean when we say that Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products give the skin stimuli? Our products do not only provide care for the surface of your skin, but also activate and support the skin’s own regenerative abilities. You could think of our products as a ‘role model’ for your skin, not taking over the work, but to guide and support our skin to regenerate itself.

Night Care:

Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner and Night Serum or Regenerating Serum each evening, or Renewing Night Conditioner 28-30 night treatment, particularly recommended in the most transitional seasons of autumn and spring or Sensitive Care Conditioner or morning and evening or Regenerating Intensive Treatment, Menopausal Intensive Treatment, Soothing Intensive Treatment, Clarifying Intensive Treatment <25 years or Clarifying Intensive Treatment 25+ years.

Interview with Elena Dowedeit, Group Leader of Skin Care Product Management, explains how aqueous, stimuli-packed night care with medicinal plant extracts should be used for healthy skin.

Elena, many customers do not think that Dr. Hauschka offers night care. How would you respond to this as an expert?

We have a comprehensive night care range that follows a completely unique concept. We opt for aqueous, stimulating formulations, which assist the skin with its nightly regeneration processes. We have been building on this concept since 1967 when Dr. Hauschka Skin Care was first launched.

What are the skin’s regeneration processes you mentioned?

At night, when we rest, our skin becomes active. For example, many metabolic processes take place. The skin cleanses and renews itself during the night. It excretes excess substances and forms new ones. We want to support it during this phase with our night care products.

You just said that you use aqueous formulations for these night care products. Why don’t you offer oil-based night creams?

Oily preparations protect the skin and are for the daytime. At night, the skin no longer focuses on providing protection. Oil-free, aqueous products are better at this time. They act as a role model for the skin, demonstrating a vibrant, opening and dynamic metabolic process. This works best with the elixir of life: water. At the same time, they do not impede the active excretion of substances.

How exactly does oil-free night care support the skin over night?

At the heart of the finely balanced compositions are rhythmic medicinal plant extracts and carefully selected minerals. When developing the products, we drew on our wealth of medical and pharmaceutical expertise. These formulations are our answer to the skin’s needs at night. The ingredients stimulate the skin’s natural abilities and regulate its fine metabolic processes. With the aid of this support, the skin can regulate its functions.

You mentioned an entire night care range. What does that consist of?

We differentiate between basic night care products for nightly use and products that are used in 28-day treatment phases. The basic night care regime comprises the three steps: cleanse, tone and revitalise. The core night care product for treatment phases is Renewing Night Conditioner, an ampoule treatment which revitalises the skin.

Why do the treatment phases last 28 days?

It takes 28 days for all of the cells in human skin to completely renew. Renewing Night Conditioner supports this 28-day rhythm with the aid of medicinal plants such as rose, marsh mallow and anthyllis, supplemented by silver and madonna lily – all rhythmically prepared with great vitality. It teaches the skin how to return to a balanced skin condition. Depending on the skin’s needs, we also offer intensive treatments, for example for mature skin, youthful, blemished skin or hypersensitive skin.

How did you come up with the idea of aqueous night care?

We have Elisabeth Sigmund to thank for this concept. The Viennese esthetician and researcher developed her own natural cosmetics range in the 1950s. In the 1960s, she played a major role in the development of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. In Vienna, she studied medicine for two semesters and spent a long time looking at the physiology of the skin. While doing so, she theorised about the benefits of oil-free night care for the skin . Her own tests confirmed her statement. Incidentally, there is a lovely quote from Elisabeth Sigmund from the period in the 1960s when Dr. Hauschka Skin Care was first being developed. At the time, she was living in Sweden and involved in the development work from afar. When Dr. Hauschka Renewing Night Conditioner (then known as Rhythmic Night Conditioner) was developed, she wrote: “I have now performed a full skin treatment on myself with such success that my husband recently asked: ‘Why have you recently been looking so young?’ No further comment is needed.”

The Nightly skin care regime in three steps

Rhythm brings life and creates beautiful skin

To remain strong and healthy, the skin needs to rhythmically alternate between natural polarities. A comparison of the times of day with the seasons helps to better understand the rhythmic processes in the skin. Apple blossom and apple fruit in Dr. Hauschka Night Serum support these processes with their spring and autumn powers.

NEW Regenerating Hand Cream

Effective & Essential

  • Intensively smoothing hand care, supporting maturing skin, with an active moisturising effect.
  • Medicinal plant extracts of highly regenerative red clover, which is rich in isoflavones, aiding skin prone to premature ageing and field horsetail providing silica in support of connective tissue.
  • Bryophyllum and quince seeds stimulate skin’s moisture-activating ability, olive and avocado oils and cocoa butter support the skin’s strength and elasticity.
  • Silky soft hands and effective protection against environmental influences.
  • Strengthens your skin’s natural resilience right to the fingertips and, with regular use, stimulates its regenerative abilities.

Your hands push back the bed covers in the morning and switch off the light at night. Out in all environments, all kinds of stresses and strains such as changing temperatures and frequent washing. It’s therefore no surprise that signs of skin ageing can appear at an early stage. When this happens, your hands are particularly receptive to skin care that combines protective, nourishing, revitalising and regenerating elements.

Effective support

Our Regenerating Hand Cream contains not only rich oils and waxes that offer intensive care and protection, but also aqueous extracts that provide invigorating and moisture-activating stimuli. Studies have confirmed the effectiveness of this formulation: both good protection of the skin’s barrier and good moisture replenishment have been demonstrated. Regenerating Hand Cream absorbs easily, has a pleasant fragrance and leaves the skin feeling wonderfully silky-smooth.

A tip from our Dr. Hauschka Estheticians

Regenerating Hand Cream may also be used as a hand mask. Use delicate stroking movements to apply twice the usual amount of Regenerating Hand Cream to each hand – working from the palms to the backs of the hands to the wrists. Wrap your hands in a towel and sit back for five to ten minutes – the optimum period for the effective formulation to take full effect.

Red clover

A font of vitality and self-renewal.

A plant that flowers in almost every meadow from May to September and can be cut multiple times during this period knows the secret of renewal. The extraordinarily dynamic plant of red clover is therefore a key ingredient in the Dr. Hauschka regenerating skin care range.

1. Growth and harvesting. Red clover is grown at our own Sonnenhof Farm, using biodynamic cultivation methods.
2. Producing the essence.
A red clover extract matures in large earthenware vats for seven days, manually stirred with great vigour every morning and evening. This produces a valuable essence containing red clover’s regenerative strengths.
3. Stimuli for mature skin.
The red clover essence is used in the formulations of every single one of the regenerating skin care products. It stimulates the skin’s revitalisation, which in turn positively affects the age-induced changes.

Be beautiful

Regenerating care for demanding, mature skin
Feel good in your own skin. And show this off self-confidently: at every stage of life.

What’s your skin telling you?
If you notice that you skin is losing its elasticity, getting drier, developing wrinkles and becoming ‘thin’, then it falls within the category of ‘mature skin’. Its requirements have changed. Dr. Hauschka regenerating skin care is aware of these new requirements and addresses your skin directly. Our formulations are designed in such a way that your skin is supported but still has to remain active – can remain active.

Your cells have not forgotten anything
If there is one thing you can rely on, it is that your cells will never forget how the skin renewal process works and will always have the strength for renewal. And even if this strengthen for renewal wanes, it can still be carefully boosted again. We cannot turn back time, but we can encourage your skin to preserve moisture and feel more toned.

Renewal is the topic of every night
Dr. Hauschka uses oil-free night care. This is because your skin does not need a protective layer at night, but instead likes to breathe freely and naturally regenerate from within. This particularly applies to mature skin. As a result, our regenerating skin care range does not include a night cream, but a toning serum and intensive treatments that fortify and harmonise your skin.
One range, eight skin care products.

Compositions with valuable ingredients
Each and every product in our regenerating skin care range contains a specific composition of medicinal plants. Read more about a few of these below.

Macadamia (Macadamia ternifolia)
Complicated to grow and laborious to process, the macadamia is the world’s most expensive nut. Its oil has similar characteristics to important components of human sebum and therefore absorbs easily, preventing the skin from ageing.

Field Horsetail (Equisetum arvense)
Field Horsetail has grown on this Earth for millions of years. It is characterised by a high content of water-soluble silicic acids, which stimulate the skin’s metabolism and fortify the connective tissue.

Bryophyllum (Kalanchoe daigremontiana)
Natively found in the Tropics, bryophyllum knows how to stock up on moisture. Its leaves and stem can store water and release it if necessary – a skill that greatly benefits mature skin.

Olive (Olea europaea)
Our olive oil is of extra-virgin quality. The delicate cold-pressing process enables it to retain its character as a pure, natural product. It cares for the skin with its premium fatty acid composition and leaves it silky-smooth.

Birch (Betula alba)
As the birch turns green, spring is upon us. It represents inner and outer cleansing processes and vibrant new beginnings – both welcome signals for mature skin.
A company that resembles a flourishing garden.

Dr. Hauschka/WALA biodynamic medicinal plant gardens

Imagine our company as a flourishing garden: we work as carefully and responsibly as possible, value manual work, understand the essence of the plants and base our actions on nature’s rhythms.

Because natural cycles and the power of vital, unpolluted raw materials form the basis of all Dr. Hauschka products, and always have done.

Since 1967 Dr. Hauschka has been devoted to creating skin care formulations from Nature. We’re celebrating our 50th Anniversary this year. Our product efficacy is based on our unique skin care philosophy, unique rhythmic process and the highest quality natural ingredients with a preference for biodynamic, organic or responsibly wild harvested sources. The result: healthy, balanced, firm, strengthened and radiant skin!

Dr. Hauschka 9 Skin Facts

Skin Fact 1

Correct Cleansing – first step towards a healthy skin

Correct cleansing with products that respect your skin’s acid mantle and hydrolipid layer provides the basis for healthy skin care. Our gentle cleansing rituals also support our no night cream philosophy.

Your skin has different cleansing needs at different times of the day. Deep cleansing in the morning with Cleansing Cream using our ‘press & roll’ technique after the night time elimination activity of your skin.

Evening cleanse with Soothing Cleansing Milk to remove make-up, eye make-up and the dirt and dust your skin picks up during the day.

Skin Fact 2

Scrub the bathroom, but never your face

Never treat your skin harshly, it has to last a life time! Cleanse to remove dirt, oil and make-up without disturbing the skin’s natural line of defence, the acid mantle and the protective outer layer of skin cells. The natural 28 day skin cell cycle is treated with respect.

Soaps, lathering products, overly alkaline substances, scrubs and exfoliants (acids or gritty compounds) strip your face of this natural protection. This may result in dry, irritated or sensitive skin, more prone to sun damage, absorption of synthetic chemical products and premature signs of ageing. The skin’s acid mantle your protection against bacteria.

Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Cream gently removes dirt and oil while protecting the skin’s natural defences and stimulating healthy lymph flow. It’s not a scrub, it’s a ‘press & roll’. This encourages and supports healthy skin, and a clear, radiant complexion.

Skin Fact 3

Squeaky clean is for dishes, not your skin

That ‘squeaky clean’ feeling comes from lathering and/or overly alkaline cleansing products and that’s your sign that the acid mantle and outer layer (stratum corneum) of your skin has been disrupted.

If you have oily/blemished skin, those harsh cleansing products that make your skin ‘squeaky clean’ just make your skin produce more oil to compensate.

Screen Shot 2015-03-27 at 12.32.46 pm

Skin Fact 4

Lose the night cream, your skin will thank you for it

  • During the night your skin is regenerating, metabolising and eliminating the day’s waste, that’s one of its many functions as the largest organ in your body.
  • The night time rhythm of the skin is one of a ‘breathing out’.
  • How do you know this is happening? Because skin disorders such as eczema, shingles, chicken pox or measles are much worse during the night. How often have you woken up in the morning to be greeted by a pimple?
  • There are no environmental factors that you need to protect your skin from while you’re asleep.
  • A night cream – which is usually a heavy, expensive, occlusive substance, impedes your skin’s normal night time process.
  • Sleeping isn’t ageing!

Dr.Hauschka’s gentle cleansing rituals support our no night cream policy. Our night treatment preparations, Night Serum or Regenerating Serum, embrace regenerating plant extracts held in an aqueous solution. These allow the skin to breathe freely and overcome any weaknesses and imbalances.

At first our ‘no night cream’ guiding principle seems unusual, however within one month (a skin cell cycle) you’ll need no more convincing!

New customers support your skin in the transition off conventional night cream use with Renewing Night Conditioner, one ampoule a night for a month, then switch to Night Serum or Regenerating Serum.

Skin Fact 5

Not all moisturisers or their application are created equal

All Dr.Hauschka Moisturisers are highly concentrated preparations, for instance our Rose Day Cream contains 30 organic or biodynamic roses and the texture is rich, encompassing protective beeswax and precious rose wax. They’re all formulated to be applied as follows:

  1. Place around a large pea size of moisturiser in the palms of your hands. (2-4 drops if you are using Clarifying Day Oil).
  2. Warm the product between the entire palms of the hands to melt the natural waxes.
  3. Apply to skin that’s still moist from Facial Toner or Clarifying Toner that you mist directly onto your skin, to hydrate, ensure even and economical application and aid absorption of moisturiser.
  4. Apply to the skin with the entirety of your palms, using both hands from the centre, outwards in the direction of lymph flow.

Skin Fact 6

‘Like treats like’, homeopathic guideline

WALA, the company that creates Dr.Hauschka Skin Care also produces around 1,000 anthroposophical homeopathic medicines. This background gives us superb medicinal, pharmaceutical and botanical knowledge. We also incorporate some homeopathic guidelines in the way we treat the skin.

Though it might seem counterintuitive to apply oil to an oily skin, it’s actually the most effective solution. The skin knows whether it’s sufficiently protected, producing more of its own oil when skin is dry and less when it’s balanced.  Drying, soap-based and overly alkaline products and conventional acne treatments may rob the skin of its defences, leaving it vulnerable to bacteria and triggering the sebaceous glands to produce even more oil.

Dr. Hauschka’s Clarifying Day Oil provides a light, rapidly absorbed layer of pure plant oils and botanical extracts, including rich in provitamin A carrot root extract, that calm the skin’s oil production while helping to treat and soothe blemishes and irritation.

On the other end of the spectrum we have Revitalising Day Cream 30ml and 100ml, a highly activating daily moisturiser that provides hydrating protection in a very light, rapidly absorbed formula.

If we treat dry skin with rich, heavy creams or oils we effectively trick our skin into believing it’s been producing too much of its own oil. In response it will decrease production, perpetuating the dry skin cycle. Revitalising Day Cream is light enough that the sebaceous glands are called upon to gently increase oil production.

Over time, the skin will regain its balance and be better able to fend for itself.  It’s all about using products to strengthen and support your skin’s own functions.

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 2.14.38 pm

Skin Fact 7

Chemical cocktail or nature’s nip

Unknowingly most woman carry with them daily up to 500 synthetic chemicals. These pollutants are self inflicted through the use of conventional face, body, hair and make-up products. A non natural moisturiser may contain around 30 synthetic chemicals and a perfume up to 400!

WALA Homeopathic Medicines began in 1935 and Dr. Hauschka Skin Care was launched in 1967 giving us a wealth of knowledge and experience. We also draw upon centuries of herbal healing wisdom, combining traditional approaches with modern pharmaceutical processes to create gentle yet effective natural skin care products that work with the skin holistically.

Our skin has an absolutely amazing ability to balance and heal itself, responding constantly to changes in our internal and external environments. It needs a little help along the way, like protection from exposure to harsh elements, or support when it gets thrown out of balance by lifestyle, hormones, transition, illness or stress.

The key is to encourage and strengthen your skin’s own natural self-healing processes. Rather than suppressing symptoms or interfering with the skin’s natural rhythms, Dr. Hauschka Skin Care respects your skin, supporting its return to balanced health through the highest quality ingredients from nature that your skin can understand.

The result, a typical Dr. Hauschka radiant and healthy skin!

Hand harvested Anthyllis, one of our key ingredients to assist all skin conditions to a state of balance.
Hand harvested Anthyllis, one of our key ingredients to assist all skin conditions to a state of balance.

Skin Fact 8

Being different allows us to stand out from the crowd

There is more to efficacy than high quality raw materials

Our formulations depend of course on the highest quality of the natural raw materials, but also on the care with which they were grown and processed. By using biodynamic (Demeter) agriculture, we put more into the soil than we take out and with our preference to hand harvest at dawn, we are choosing medicinal plants with the highest vitality.  It’s this vitality we wish to pass on to your skin.

Complex compositions that are made up of more than just the sum of their components.

Only when our ingredients are supported by our unique rhythmic manufacturing procedure do our products take on their distinctive quality that enables them to stimulate the skin’s own natural activity and re-establish its natural balance.

The finest of differences made transparent

What percentage of the ingredients in natural cosmetics are organic? What are the minimum standards and the maximum values? Furthermore: how can you describe the high quality of a product other than through its material properties – its finely tuned composition, its more than biochemical effect?

Our entire range is certified with the international quality seal for natural and organic skin care ‘NATRUE’. The NATRUE standard distinguishes between natural skin care, natural skin care with at least 70% organic ingredients and natural skin care with at least 95% organic ingredients.

The term ‘natural skin care’ alone is neither legally protected nor defined on a binding basis. At www.natrue.org you can find the certifications given to the individual Dr.Hauschka skin care products, this is your guarantee.

Skin Fact 9

Compressing & Hydrating supports Correct Cleansing

“Using a Compress brings life to the skin, you’ll notice the difference with your cleansing, it leaves you with a clearer, softer skin”
Fay, Store Manager at Discovery Centre Rozelle

We recommend you ‘Compress & Hydrate’ prior to cleansing. This relaxes the skin and softens the walls of the pores to achieve a deeper cleanse. You will also use your cleansing products more economically.

Organic Cotton Compress
Our Compress is particularly large because the many layers folded help to retain warmth.

  1. Fold the compress in half and half again
  2. Both folds to be length wise, not square
  3. Place folded Compress into the basin with Dr. Hauschka Bath Essence infused water
  4. Squeeze excess water from the Compress
  5. Place firstly under the chin, then wrap the face and press
  6. Repeat twice, now your skin is prepared for using Cleansing Cream or Soothing Cleansing Milk

Tip: Always complete cleanse with a compress or splash of cold water, this activates a minute muscle beside the hair follicle, contracting it, ensuring any last remaining dirt is removed. This simple technique has your skin feeling wonderfully soft, without the need for harsh exfoliation.

How do you know if you have cool or warm toned skin?

Why is it important to know if you have warm or cool toned skin?

Because it makes it so much easier to choose fabric colours that look the most flattering on you, and choose shades of Lip Colour to enhance.

  • Cool toned skin (pink, red or blue undertones)
  • Warm toned skin (yellow, peachy, golden undertones)
  • Neutral toned skin (a mix of warm and cool undertones, however, most neutrals do tend to sway to either warm or cool)
The jewellery test

If gold jewellery is more flattering on you, then you have a warm toned skin.
If silver jewellery is more flattering on you, then you have a cool toned skin.

The vein test

If your veins appear greenish, then you have a warm toned skin.
If your veins appear blueish, then you have a cool toned skin.

The fabric test

If you look best in browns and off-white, then you’re warm toned.
If you look best in black and white, then you’re cool toned.

Dr. Hauschka NEW Make-up features six colour worlds that have been created for our Lip Shades: rose, pink, berry, red, apricot, and brown.

Within each colour world, we offer a light, medium and dark Lipstick, six Sheer Lipsticks and six Lip Glosses to align with our six lip colour worlds.

Beauty is the exterior expression of true well-being

Even if two women are identically made up, each retains her individuality given that the colours have a different effect on everyone depending on their skin pigmentation. The diversity of colours is based on mineral pigments of natural origin, which blend in with the wearer’s own skin tone.

What’s unique about Dr. Hauschka Make-up is that it restores natural balance to the skin and adds colour without concealing natural radiance and vitality, and the fine textures ensure application with ease.

The raw materials are sourced almost exclusively from certified organic cultivation and meet Demeter and fair-trade standards whenever possible. All Dr. Hauschka make-up products are certified in accordance with NATRUE, the international standard for natural and organic skin care and make-up.

100% Natural Skin Care and Make-up

Face care, body care and make-up, all Dr. Hauschka products are 100% certified natural. Wherever possible, our ingredients are sourced from organic certified or biodynamic cultivation. For Dr. Rudolf Hauschka, founder of our company WALA, this was a matter of course. Even back in the 1960s when he and Cosmetologist and Natural Botanical Researcher, Elisabeth Sigmund developed our first skin care range, the formulations were based on natural, organic and biodynamic ingredients. Ingredients to support a healthy, balanced, toned and radiant skin.

Sustainable. Conscious. Cruelty free. Aromatic natural and organic essential oils, free from synthetic chemical fragrance. Free from parabens, sulphates, PEGs, phthalates, silicones, petrochemicals, synthetic chemical colours and preservatives.

Always read product ingredients. Some ingredients to avoid:

  • parabens – controversial, read more here.
  • triclosan – antibacterial agent, toxic to aquatic life, read more here.
  • microbeads – read more here.
  • phenoxyethanol – preservative, irritant for some.
  • methylisothiazolinone (MI), a preservative that may cause swelling, rashes and eczema. It’s often found in cleansing wipes, incredibly it’s also found in baby wipes. Read more here.
Dr. Hauschka/WALA biodynamic medicinal plant gardens

All Dr. Hauschka products are certified natural and organic by NATRUE.

What exactly is NATRUE?

NATRUE is an international quality label for natural and organic skin care and make-up. It gives customer transparency to identify AUTHENTIC natural and organic products as the term ‘natural’ and/or ‘organic’ alone is neither protected nor precisely defined by law. Only products that meet very strict criteria are allowed to display the NATRUE label.

Three certification levels:

1. Natural skin care and make-up
The strict rules for ingredients and their processing apply. The 100% natural ingredients do not necessarily have to come from certified organic agriculture.

2. Natural skin care and make-up with an organic portion
The product is 100% natural and > 70% of the ingredients come from certified organic agriculture and/or controlled wild collection.

3. Organic skin care and make-up
The product is 100% natural and > 95% of the ingredients come from certified organic agriculture and/or controlled wild collection.

To find out the certification level of your favourite Dr. Hauschka product(s) click here, then go to THE PRODUCT SEARCH and type in the name of the product(s) you wish to check, e.g. Rose Day Cream, which you’ll find is certified ‘Organic Skin Care’ i.e. the product is 100% natural and > 95% of the ingredients come from certified organic (or biodynamic) agriculture and/or controlled wild harvesting.

This percentage-based differentiation is important as, even today, it is still not possible to fully obtain all raw materials in organic quality. In some cases, this has led to us instigating the cultivation of organic raw ingredients with our Cultivation Partnerships. Rose essential oil, mango butter, castor oil and shea butter are just a few examples.

All Dr. Hauschka products are certified according to the very high standards of NATRUE, to provide peace of mind. We’re proud to be producing natural skin care since 1967 and do so out of conviction and a responsibility to nature and your wellbeing. What could be more sustainable and effective than natural ingredients from certified organic or biodynamic cultivation obtained under fair trade conditions.

The NATRUE label is your guarantee products are 100% natural

For example, medicinal plants, botanical oils and waxes and genuine essential oils – naturally of organic quality wherever possible. Many of the medicinal plants used grow in our own biodynamic medicinal herb garden or in the fields on our Demeter farm, the Sonnenhof. We also purchase other raw materials from regional sources. Our climate is simply not suitable for growing some of the plant species from which we obtain raw materials.

Fragrant roses for essential rose oil, almond trees and jojoba bushes, for example. We want to purchase these in organic quality for our formulations as well. To do this, we sometimes have to instigate the production of organic raw materials in the first place. Essential rose oil, mango butter, castor oil and shea butter are just a few of the raw materials to which this applies. We support farmers financially and with our knowledge of organic farming. We help them obtain organic certifications and guarantee certain purchase volumes.

It goes without saying that we are committed to fair trade conditions characterised by mutual trust and independent development opportunities. We therefore have a solid and long-term working relationship with many organic farming partners, including ones who grow almonds and olives in Spain, jojoba in Argentina and macadamia nuts in Kenya. We help our partners increase their production capacities and, where desired, finance regular visits to them by biodynamic consultants.

The aim of such involvement is always to enable the partners to develop commercially and achieve economic stability that makes them independent from us.

We also believe that such partnerships should involve good local working conditions. Thus, we have encouraged developments such as the creation of social areas for the workers of an oil mill and supported the construction of suitable sanitary facilities, for example. After all, it is not only financial independence that is important to us, but also better social conditions for people locally.

Click play for Interview with Ralf Kunert, managing director of Naturamus GmbH, sourcing raw ingredients.

Mr Kunert, what exactly does naturamus GmbH do?

As an independent subsidiary of WALA Heilmittel GmbH, we purchase all the raw materials for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and WALA Medicines. This involves about a thousand different raw materials, such as essential and fatty oils, fresh plants and pharmaceutical auxiliary substances like emulsifiers or raw globules for medicines.

You purchase the raw materials in organic quality wherever possible, but what do you do if this quality is not available?

If a raw material or sufficient quantities thereof are not available in organic quality, we initiate raw material partnerships around the world on behalf of WALA. The WALA philosophy expressly states that these partners should become financially independent. To do this, they need to sell their products to a wider customer base. We put a great deal of time and energy into implementing these principles.

You have already found a partner for the high-quality organic macadamia nut oil used in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products. What criteria did this partner have to meet?

Organic quality and fair trade are key criteria for us. We therefore purchase organic macadamia nuts in Kenya and process them to obtain oil in our own production plant for quality reasons. Our local partner is LIMBUA, an organically certified Kenyan company that sells macadamia nuts and avocados that it purchases from smallholder farmers. LIMBUA was established as a result of the impressive ‘macadamiafans’ initiative founded in 2009.

What kind of initiative is macadamiafans and what makes it so impressive?

First and foremost, macadamiafans is based on a social concept. The initiative helps macadamia farmers in Kenya create short channels between producers and consumers. macadamiafans offers farmers and their families direct access to the export market so that intermediaries no longer take a large portion of the profits. This all happens in cooperation with the WELT:KLASSE Foundation. Student companies from Germany are responsible for selling the Kenyan macadamia nuts.

Once again for clarity: you are impressed by macadamiafans but buy from LIMBUA. What is the relation between these two partners?

macadamiafans Kenya Ltd. is the initial source. The founders, Hannes and Matti Spiecker, also established LIMBUA Group Limited to help farmers receive a better income. LIMBUA follows the exact same philosophy as macadamiafans. Whereas the market-related activities of macadamiafans, as a LIMBUA educational project, still follow the original idea behind the initiative and focus solely on student companies, LIMBUA also sells directly to large, commercial customers. This improves market access for the smallholder farmers who are already involved in the initiative, including for their other organic products. Since 2009, a major rise in interest has also been seen from neighbouring farmers. The expanded customer base means that it is now possible for more and more smallholder farmers to get involved. The latest technology with mobile phones and fingerprints comes into play here.

Mobile phones and fingerprints? That sounds interesting. Can you elaborate?

All macadamia nut purchases and sales made by LIMBUA are digitally recorded using LIMBUA’s computer system. This provides excellent transparency for Kenyan farmers. These use their fingerprint to confirm their identity in the system and log into their account, where they can not only record inspections of their farms by organic consultants but also the number of kilograms of macadamia nuts they are selling to LIMBUA. Once the figures have been recorded, the farmers receive a text message indicating how much money they will receive per kilogram of their nuts. As soon as these nuts have been recorded at the LIMBUA factory using a barcode reader and the quantity has been confirmed, the money is credited to the relevant farmer’s mobile phone account. It really is brilliantly simple! And the whole process takes just a few hours.

You previously mentioned short channels between producers and consumers. But surely LIMBUA has to profit from the sale of the nuts as an intermediary, meaning that the farmers earn less?

LIMBUA naturally has to cover its costs. However, all of the profits currently go into expanding the activities in Kenya to enable more farmers to earn a fair price for their products. The farmers are definitely benefiting from the initiative.

You mentioned that farmer training is also recorded in LIMBUA’s digital system. What kind of training?

The farmers have a wide array of organic farming training courses and consultant visits financed by LIMBUA. The visits and participation in the training courses are basic prerequisites for the conversion of the farmers’ land to certified organic farming. This enables them to vastly increase their earnings as organic produce achieves a higher sales value on the market.

Are farmers not tempted to mix in conventional nuts with the organic ones?

The risk of this is extremely low. When the macadamia trees are in blossom, LIMBUA employees estimate the expected crop yield. If a farmer delivers more nuts than expected, he will only be paid once he has explained where the additional nuts came from. The nuts are also naturally subjected to residue analyses, for example to check for pesticides.

How many people currently benefit from selling nuts via LIMBUA?

In Kenya, 5,000 farmers receive a regular income from selling macadamia nuts to LIMBUA. This naturally benefits their families, meaning that ultimately, over 25,000 people can enjoy a better life thanks to macadamia farming. Many school children in Germany also benefit.

Why does macadamia farming benefit German school children?

It does so on a completely different level. The school children I mean are those who work with macadamiafans and the WELT:KLASSE Foundation to sell the Kenyan macadamia nuts in Germany. Several of them get the opportunity to visit the smallholder farmers in Kenya and gain an extremely valuable experience in doing so. They obtain a clear picture of how the global value chain works and how our purchasing habits affect people’s living conditions in the source countries. If you take care to buy sustainably produced goods, you not only protect the environment but also help to support farming families. By establishing the LIMBUA Foundation, LIMBUA is following a similar concept to WELT:KLASSE in Kenya.

A Kenyan foundation that uses school children to sell macadamia nuts?

Not quite. The objective is slightly different. The LIMBUA Foundation is a non-profit organisation that works with schools and universities in Kenya. It focusses on raising pupils’ and students’ awareness of environmental correlations. It provides lessons on organic farming and biodiversity in general schools and at universities, but also at the LIMBUA tree schools. The aim is to create extensive social commitment that will hopefully create mutual understanding between Kenya and Europe.

Do you simply buy the macadamia nuts from LIMBUA or support the project in other ways as well?

First and foremost, we buy the nuts. However, we also assist the company with marketing, for example. In this regard, we believe that it is important for LIMBUA to not only offer macadamia nuts but also other products as the smallholder farmers’ entire farms are organically certified and used to grow all sorts of products. In 2016, for example, we worked with LIMBUA to have an initial batch of avocados from smallholder farmers in Kenya processed to make oil. We are also naturally aware that companies in the expansion phase can often face major liquidity problems. We have therefore supported LIMBUA in relation to finance matters and pre-financed the harvest, for example. It is simply important to us that we develop a long-term partnership based on social and environmental responsibility. We know that our customers also value this.

A transparent supply chain for Kenyan macadamia nuts

When the macadamia trees are in blossom, the expected crop yield can be estimated. The volume of macadamia nuts supplied is compared with this estimate. If the volumes match, the farmer is paid based on a fingerprint login and a mobile phone account.

To Cleanse Or To Double Cleanse?

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Soothing Cleansing Milk emulsifies your make-up, enabling removal along with the dirt your skin picks up during the day.

  • First cleanse to remove make-up, dirt, dust and pollution.
  • Second cleanse for your skin, in preparation for night time regeneration and elimination.

Here’s how:

  1. Basin of warm water preferably with a little Dr. Hauschka Bath Essence.
  2. Immerse your organic cotton cloth or your cleansing sponge into the water and squeeze.
  3. Moisten your skin, you’ll find you use use Soothing Cleansing Milk more economically on moist skin.
  4. Wipe away your make-up on one side of the cloth or cleansing sponge.
  5. Now cleanse your skin a second time with Soothing Cleansing Milk and remove with the clean side of your cloth or cleansing sponge. Alternatively you may prefer your second cleanse to be a deeper cleanse with Cleansing Cream, remove by rinsing.

TIP: Always, always complete your cleanse with a couple of splashes of cold water to contract the tiny muscle beside hair follicles to help remove any last remaining dirt and it makes your skin feel soft.

Morning Cleanse

After the night time elimination activity of the skin, our recommended morning cleanser, Cleansing Cream, with finely ground almond meal, which is particularly good at attracting and removing dirt and the night time elimination from your skin. It’s also used in the ‘press and roll’ technique, so it’s ever so gentle. No double cleanse required.

FAQs

Do I really need a cleanser to clean my skin or will just water do the trick?

Yes you do need an effective, gentle cleanser that removes make-up, dirt, dust and pollution and your skin. However, it must also respect the pH of your skin.

Is there a difference between a cleanser and a face wash?

Face wash is a lathering product, and lathering products are too harsh/alkaline for your skin. It’s really important to respect the hydrolipid layer of your skin, your skin will feel comfortable after cleansing, not tight.

Why don’t your cleansers say which skin condition they’re for?

Because both Soothing Cleansing Milk and Cleansing Cream are effective, gentle cleansing products for any and all skin conditions. They respect the hydrolipid layer and your skin’s pH, because the natural acidity of your skin is your protection against bacteria.

Do I need a cleansing cloth or sponge?

Yes, because emulsified make-up needs wiping away. Ideally wash them daily in laundry liquid that won’t leave behind chemical residues or optical brighteners.

Isn’t Cleansing Cream a scrub?

No, it’s mixed with a little water to form and emulsion, then you ‘press and roll’ it into your skin. This causes a suction effect and almond meal is particularly good at binding dirt. Think how you would caress a child’s face, treat your face exactly the same, with the utmost gentle touch, it has to last you a lifetime! Check out The Truth About Exfoliating.

Sometimes I’m in a hurry, so I use wipes, is that ok?

No, see Why You Need To Avoid Using Wipes

The Power of Nature – Our Biodynamic Medicinal Herb Garden

When harvesting medicinal plants for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, there is no place we prefer to do than in our medicinal herb garden. This is located directly behind our oldest company building in Eckwälden, an agricultural town in southern Germany at the foot of the Swabian Jura Mountains. The local farmers sold a plot of land with heavy clay soil to our company founder Dr. Rudolf Hauschka back in the 1950s. When he started to use it to create a medicinal herb garden, the farmers shook their heads in disbelief. Some may even have had a quiet chuckle. This made them all the more astounded when they saw the oasis that had grown from the clay after several years of work.

The huge range of species grown in the garden is certainly unique. More than 150 different plant species flourish here, to be used in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and WALA Medicines products. The 4.5 hectare plot is continuously tended by six gardeners using biodynamic methods. Over time, these have made the soil fertile and crumbly. Compost created in the garden itself improves the soil’s structure and promotes the healthy growth of the plants. Their leaves, petals, fruits and even roots are manually harvested all year round. Even the seeds that develop into seedlings for 25,000 young plants in spring come from the garden. Our medicinal herb garden is as closed a cycle as possible and also provides a habitat for wild plants and animals. It really is a true oasis.

What does quality mean to you in your everyday work in the Dr. Hauschka/WALA biodynamic medicinal herb garden?

When conducting our gardening work, we believe it is important to consciously monitor the processes and think in cycles. How do the soil, plants, animals and people work together in the garden? Our garden has an array of different habitats: shady, wooded areas and sunny spots, a stream, a pond, windy corners and damp areas. How can we prepare the garden in such a way that plants can become medicinal plants in it?

What turns a plant into a medicinal plant?

If you imagine a plant, your mind creates a picture of a balanced form with roots, a stem, leaves and petals. A medicinal plant differs from this ideal. For example, it may have either extremely long or very short roots. It may flower at an unusual time of year or grow the best in extreme climate conditions. In our garden, we allow medicinal plants to express their natural being as they grow.

WALA medicine; WALA Arzneimittel

That almost sounds like you regard the medicinal plants as equal, highly individual partners.

Yes, you could definitely see it that way. We are each even responsible for looking after particular medicinal plant species and take great care to meet their needs.

What does this plant care involve?

You could say that the people who tend the plants act as spokespeople for them. For example, our gardener Tine Janssen looks after all the wood sorrel. She monitors it very closely and makes sure that it can grow in the best place in the garden for it. Wood sorrel is a forest plant that we enable to grow under trees. Tine can tell if wood sorrel is not as healthy as it should be and needs some extra special care. As the optimum harvest time approaches, she monitors the wood sorrel daily – together with her colleagues in the plant laboratory who will later process it. Together, they choose the precise day on which to harvest the plants. Marigold petals for medicines can even only be picked by plant laboratory staff as these have very specific requirements with regard to the condition of the flowers: they must have already opened but not yet be in full bloom. Fortunately, the plant laboratory is located right next to our garden. The freshly harvested medicinal plants can therefore be taken straight there for processing.

screen-shot-2017-02-02-at-11-00-33-am

The WALA medicinal herb garden uses biodynamic cultivation methods. What makes these special?

Wherever possible, the biodynamic garden represents a closed cycle. We collect the seeds and use them to grow the next generation of plants. We regard the soil as a living organism. Plant waste from the garden and the production processes is put on our compost heaps. You could refer to these as the heart of the garden. Not only do they provide fertiliser for the beds but mature compost also helps to regulate and mediate the processes in the garden.

Plant ingredients with the most vitality, the best for your skin, grow from the very best soil.
Biodynamic gardens: Plant ingredients with the most vitality, the best quality for your skin, grow from the very best soil.

Compost regulates and mediates? What do you mean?

On the one hand quite simply that plant materials from all times of year come together on the compost heap. The diversity offered by the garden is brought together in a single place. This is like taking a long, deep breath in. We then give the compost plenty of time to mature. For two and a half years we leave the plant materials to decompose, to experience the qualities of the different seasons and form something new. This is an intensely harmonious process. After all, harmony means bringing together contrasting elements to form a uniform whole. We could speed up the process by frequently turning the compost. But that is not something we want to do.

screen-shot-2017-01-25-at-2-24-15-pm
Compost is the unifying heart of the garden. Plant material from all times of the year come together in the compost, decompose and mature.

Why is it so important to allow the compost to mature for so long?

Only with time and our compost management can the decomposition process take place in an orderly, harmonious manner. We support the process through the addition of medicinal herbs and by turning the compost just twice a year. As we turn the compost, we notice its smell, colour and consistency. At some point, we will see that it has fully matured. Mature compost is a joyful thing. It is the earth’s gold.

And this is when the long exhale begins?

Yes, exactly. We spread the compost on the beds at different times. Each plant species is given just the right amount of compost for its needs, under the watchful eye of its designated gardener. Once administered, the compost acts like an invigorating mediator. It transfers the harmony of its decomposition process to the plants. Plant growth becomes more regulated as though the compost teaches the plants to find the right balance. The plants become more resistant to pests and turn into powerful medicinal plants for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and WALA Medicines.
