Roses in Rose Day Cream Light

It’s fascinating to see what the rose, a master of balance, can do for your skin,” explains pharmacist Annette Greco, Head of Product Development at Dr. Hauschka. “The rose is vibrantly young in character, but also durable; defensive yet open to its environment; thorny yet velvety. Its ability to embody these contrasting characteristics and combine them into one perfect aesthetic is proof of its harmonising potential for skin care and make-up. It’s for this reason that almost all Dr. Hauschka products contain rose in some form.”

Harmonising facial care

This includes the Rose Day Cream Light. The harmonising face cream softly envelopes the skin and imparts all the beneficial properties of rose. Contained within this smooth and light protective cream is the rose in all her forms: rose water, rose petal extract, rose hip extract, Damask rose essential oil and precious rose wax.

Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream Light

  • For sensitive, delicate skin
  • Strengthens and stabilises skin that is prone to redness
  • Harmonises and regulates moisture
  • Promotes the skin’s natural processes
  • The light texture absorbs quickly and provides the ideal base for make-up

Beautifully versatile: the roses in Dr. Hauschka products

“It’s not enough to simply say: this product contains rose – it’s also important to mention how,” explains Annette Greco, Head of Product Development at Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. “Sometimes we use essential rose oil, sometimes rose hip extract, other times rose water or rose petal extract.”

A fair partnership: organic essential rose oil

Dr. Hauschka also places great importance on sourcing its roses. To obtain our precious organic essential rose oil, for example, we work with partners all over the world – including in Ethiopia and Afghanistan. Dr. Hauschka has been supporting and advising a World Hunger Aid project in Afghanistan for several years. The cultivation of organic roses provides locals with an alternative to growing opium poppies, which are used to produce opiates such as heroin. Projects like these help people to secure their livelihoods and improve their financial and social situations. They also promote organic farming methods.

Rose Cultivation Partnership Projects

Damask Rose (Rosa damascena)

In creating the formulations for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, we draw on the many things that nature has to offer. For example, medicinal plants, botanical oils and waxes and genuine essential oils. Working with renewable natural raw materials has many logistical challenges, therefore long term planning is imperative for us. Many of the medicinal herbs we need are grown by our gardeners in our own biodynamic garden or in the fields on our Demeter certified farm, Sonnenhof. We also purchase other raw materials from regional sources as the climate is not suitable for growing some of the plant species from which we obtain raw materials. WALA*/Dr. Hauschka initiates and supports organic or biodynamic cultivation projects all over the world to ensure premium quality, sufficient quantity, continuity and longevity of ingredient supplies, and we embrace social responsibility and fair price principles. A prime example of this is Rose Essential Oil partnerships in Bulgaria, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and our most recently launched Rose Project in the Ethiopian Highlands.

Did you know?

• There are 30 organic or biodynamic roses in every tube of Rose Day Cream.

• We sell tubes of Rose Day Cream per minute worldwide!

• We purchase the highest quantity of the world’s highest grade organic rose essential oil. It comes from our biodynamic or organic cultivation partnership projects in Ethiopia, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria and Afghanistan.

• Approximately one hectare of roses is needed to obtain 1 kg of precious Rose Essential Oil, which is used in nearly all Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Make-up products and in many WALA medicines.

Harvesting roses in Ethiopia; Rosenernte Äthiopien
Rose Project – Ethiopian Highlands

When it comes to sources of Rose Essential Oil, countries such as Turkey, Bulgaria, Iran and Afghanistan come to mind – but Ethiopia? As it turns out, the Ethiopian highlands, which are well known for their coffee, provide the ideal conditions for growing the very fragrant Damask Rose, and it yields an exceptionally precious essential oil.

WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care support the Terra PLC Damask Rose Farm, a fair trade initiative in Ethiopia. We are helping to create a self-reliant and economically sustainable community by establishing a biodynamic resource for Damask Rose Essential Oil, a key ingredient in the Dr. Hauschka range.

In 2005 WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care provided Ethiopian grower, Fekade Lakew, with rose cuttings and introduced him to a consultant to train and advise on biodynamic cultivation methods. It took 7 years before the first harvest of rose blossoms. At that time, in 2012, Lakew also initiated the biodynamic certification process. Once certified, his farm was the sole certified biodynamic source of rose essential oil in Africa.

A key benefit of growing roses near the equator is that the lifespan of the bloom increases substantially, giving farmers twice the time to harvest, and requiring fewer pickers who can often be employed beyond the typical picking season. Ethiopian roses in particular are nearly twice as heavy as blossoms from other countries resulting in a greater yield from fewer plants.

WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care committed to purchasing all of the rose essential oil produced at Fekade Lakew’s farm for a period of ten years, and 60-70% thereafter. This ensures that the initiative has ample time to establish itself without becoming dependent upon a single customer for all its revenue in the long term.

Damask Rose Essential Oil from Ethiopia is used in the formulations of nearly all Dr. Hauschka products, including Rose Day Cream, Rose Day Cream Light, Rose Nurturing Body Wash, Rose Deodorant, Rose Nurturing Body Oil, Rose Nurturing Body Moisturiser, and many of our make-up products. When a Dr. Hauschka customer purchases products featuring this hero ingredient, she/he helps support the growth of this fair trade effort in Ethiopia and Dr. Hauschka’s other rose cultivation projects around the globe.

WALA medicines; WALA Heilmittel GmbH
Rose Project – Iran

The cultivation of roses in ‘Persia’ is an ancient tradition. There are 1500 growers who work as independent operators for Zahra Rosewater Company, our partner in Iran. Through biodynamic practices over the last few decades the annual production yield is now 900 tonnes of rose water (rose hydrosol) and 150 kgs of rose essential oil. WALA/Dr. Hauschka purchase more than one third of all the rose oil and dried rose blossoms that Zahra produces. The Iranian government subsidises chemical fertilisers, so initially it was extremely difficult to convince the farmers to refrain from using them, and to embrace biodynamic agriculture. Education and training were and still are important pillars of the collaboration with these growers.

Anyone working with Zahra is family and as part of this family-oriented collaboration, older people no longer able to work receive a kind of pension, Zahra has improved the water supply to the villages and supports the schools. A local health centre set up by Zahra guarantees primary health care. Zahra makes it possible for gifted children to attend a special school. The hope is that they will return to their villages with a good education and work there. The idea is working, Lalehzar has the lowest unemployment rate in the region. Zahra also donates part of its profits to the orphanages of the Sanati Foundation.

WALA Medicines; WALA Heilmittel GmbH
Rose Project – Bulgaria

Rose oil has been produced for the French perfume industry since the end of the 19th century. These days, however, the perfume industry uses mainly synthetic chemical ‘perfume’ as a much cheaper option. WALA/Dr. Hauschka  instigated long term supply contracts with Bulgarian rose growers and the provision of loans to support our new partners. Organic Certification was gained in 2003.

rose flowers, Ethiopia; Rosenblüten, Äthiopien
Rose Project – Turkey

Some 320 mountain farmers in the Baskoop Rose Co-operative have adapted their methods of cultivation to supply certified organic roses. WALA is significantly contributing to securing the livelihoods of the local farming families and to the survival of the traditional and labour intensive rose distilling industry. WALA also bears all costs for agricultural, technical and organic consultations and some of the costs of certification.

Auf dem Rosenfeld
Rose Project – Afghanistan

Did you know that 80% of the world’s heroin comes from Afghanistan? In order to combat the opium trade in Afghanistan and on the initiative of German Agro Action a project was set up for producing rose oil in 2004.  This project offers an alternative means of securing a sustainable and honourable livelihood for local farmers. WALA/Dr. Hauschka expressed an interest in the project in 2006 and has been supporting it ever since. Today over 700 farmers are growing organic Damask roses on more than 100 hectares of land. A large volume of organic rose oil is produced, most of which is sold to WALA/Dr. Hauschka.  This ancient Afghan tradition has been brought back to life with this budding partnership.

Our Rose Essential Oil is derived from Rosa damascena, named so from Damascus in Syria, also known as the Damask Rose.  This most fragrant of roses produces the highest quality Rose Essential Oil, also known as Rose Otto, or Attar of Roses.

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This blog tells you more about the Rose: where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

Raw material profile

Over 20,000 varieties, innumerable colours from yellow, orange and white to pink and red, single and double flowers, bushes, climbing or erect growth. The range of rose (Rosa spp.) varieties is seemingly endless. Its wild bushy forms come from the Orient and are thought to have spread from Persia and Babylon via Egypt to Greece and Italy. Despite their differences, roses have one thing in common: the fivefold symmetry of their flowers. In other words, each flower head has five petals or a number of petals that is divisible by five. Each of these petals has its own form. Even the five green base leaves that cup the blossom petals from below differ from one another. Rose hips develop from the rose petals. As the fruits of the rose, their form is as diverse as that of the petals. A further typical characteristic of roses are their thorns, which are actually classed as prickles from a botanical perspective. Unlike thorns, which are created through the transformation of stems or leaves and grow as a fused part of the plant, prickles can be easily detached. The original rose varieties firmly embed themselves in the ground with their deep roots. Some hybrid tea roses lack this strong root system and are therefore grafted to the roots of a dog rose.

Roses can be used in all sorts of ways. Rose petals contain essential oil, tannins, nectar, lipids, wax and resin, among other things. With the aid of distillation, both rose water and essential rose oil can be obtained from the rose petals. Rose oil has been shown to contain more than 400 individual constituents. Due to its complexity, the natural scent of a rose cannot be 100% synthetically replicated. In aromatherapy, essential rose oil is used for its relaxant, de-stressing and mood-lifting properties. The wax extracted from the rose petals has a very fine and silky consistency. Rose hips contain high levels of vitamin C, plant acids and pectins, and are strengthening.

Ingredients in Rose Nurturing Body Cream

Four rose preparations take effect in Rose Nurturing Body Cream. Rose wax, essential rose oil and extracts of wild rose fruits and rose petals harmonise the skin. They form the heart of the balancing Body Cream, which offers warmth and serenity by enveloping the senses in a wondrous fragrance of roses based on a rich woodiness. The creamy yet rich formulation stimulates and fortifies the skin’s natural protective abilities. Shea butter from the organic wild collection project initiated by Dr. Hauschka in Burkina Faso joins forces with almond and jojoba oil to provide intensive skin care. The result: velvety soft skin.

Why is rose used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

The Rose, she’s full of contrasts and contradiction in the way she expresses herself. She’s strong yet also soft; resistant and thorny yet tender, smells sweet yet also bitter. She opens with fragrance yet contracts with her abundance of firming tannins.

Balancing, harmonising and strengthening for your skin, gentle and nurturing yet also exotic for your senses. The Rose is a symbol of the purest harmony. She has the strength to bring together her contrasting elements and create complete strength of expression.

Different preparations highlights different aspects of the rose: the essential oil sends us on a journey full of dreams, from which we gather strength. The warm oil extract with accentuates the rose’s soothing, rich and protective qualities, while aqueous preparations are dominated by her fortifying and generally harmonising abilities.

Origin, cultivation and processing

For Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, we use rose extracts that have been prepared in several different ways: essential rose oil, rose water, rose wax, oil extracts from dried rose petals, aqueous, rhythmitised extracts from fresh rose petals and extracts of wild rose fruits (rose hips).

We procure the essential rose oil from our independent partners in Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Iran and Turkey. These obtain the oil from Damask rose petals through the use of steam distillation. It takes about a hectare of roses to obtain a kilogram of the valuable oil, which is used in many Dr. Hauschka skin care products. The partners grow the roses using certified organic or Demeter cultivation methods. Our agricultural consultants regularly visit the countries and support them with their experience. Grants for the purchase of rose cuttings or the construction of distilleries help new partners who are just starting out in rose cultivation. This is in line with our commitment to high quality. As, whenever possible, we only use raw materials obtained from biodynamic or certified organic cultivation, we believe that it is very important to establish new, independent raw material partnerships. With the aid of our support and guaranteed purchase prices, new jobs and better living standards are created locally. In Afghanistan, for example, the cultivation of roses offers people an alternative to growing opium poppies.

Essential rose oil in Demeter quality comes from a rose farm at an altitude of 2,900 metres. This is the first African rose oil from the south of the Sahara.

Certified organic essential rose oil is produced by a community that has organised itself as a kind of corporate foundation. The project was initiated, and for many years supported, by the World Hunger Organisation with the aim of offering an alternative to the cultivation of opium poppies.

We obtain organic-quality essential rose oil and dried rose petals from a company in southern Iran which belongs to a foundation that demonstrates a high level of social and cultural commitment.
Further information about rose cultivation in Iran

We obtain essential rose oil in organic and Demeter quality as well as rose water and rose wax from Turkey. We have worked with a cooperative in the south-west of the country for more than 20 years.

We obtain organically certified essential rose oil from several small producers in the Rose Valley, which has a century-old tradition of rose oil production.

The rose hips from the dog rose (Rosa canina) come from various sources including our own Demeter farm, the Sonnenhof.

The word rose is thought to come from the Indo-Germanic word word or vrad, the meaning of which is retained in Sanskrit as vrad = tender. Almost all of the world’s languages have a word for the rose; it is only absent in the language of the Inuits.

The rose was already the symbol for love, beauty and grace at a very early stage and in Greece it also signified a great lust for life. This wondrous creation seemed to be so unearthly that in many cultures it was seen as a gift from the gods, particularly those of love and fertility.

The rose is also the flower of wisdom and a clear mind. Sub rose dictum: the dictum under the rose was the stock phrase of secret societies such as the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons, which adopted the white rose as their symbol and hung it over their table as a stuccoed rose. A promise made under the rose was deemed to be completely confidential.

The rose’s golden age as a healing plant came with the pharmacists’ rose (Rosa gallic) in the 13th century in Proving near Paris, where it arrived from Damascus. For almost 600 years Proving was the centre of medicinal rose cultivation. Medicines made from roses were sent from there to all over the world.

Sage Mint Deodorant and Rose Deodorant

The formulations of Dr. Hauschka Deodorant were optimised in 2015. They rely on the authentic nature and the full force of their natural ingredients. The effective formulas make it difficult for odour causing bacteria to grow. As a finely balanced composition, the two roll-ons protect and care for the skin, are well tolerated by the skin, and do not stain and do not contain pore constricting aluminium salts. An elegant, delicate fragrance of rose and herb and the fresh touch of sage and mint.

Sage Mint Deodorant – herb fresh reliability

The oil-free Dr. Hauschka Sage Mint Deodorant contains the essences of sage and witch hazel, two naturally effective, anti-microbial and astringent components. The vivacious fragrance of mint and the natural bouquet of sage harmonise to provide a long-lasting feeling of freshness. Feel fresh – in every situation

New Dr. Hauschka deodorants provide protection and care for the skin. Whether during exercise or in stressful situations, the body starts to sweat under a wide variety of circumstances. Perspiration is a completely normal metabolic function, but it can be unpleasant in certain situations. This is why the new deodorants from Dr. Hauschka inhibit the growth of bacteria and cover odours naturally. However, they do not suppress the process of perspiration itself – which means they do not need to contain aluminium compounds.

Like a balm for the skin, Rose Deodorant contains moisturising jojoba oil, while Sage Mint Deodorant has a gel-like consistency and is oil-free. Both stay on the skin longer than short-acting deodorant sprays, imparting a lasting feeling of natural freshness.

How quickly and how much a person perspires depends on a number of factors – diet, clothing, and individual levels of activity and stress. Perspiration regulates the body’s temperature, eliminates metabolic wastes and combines with the skin’s acid mantle to form a barrier that protects us from harmful germs.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 10.37.33 am

What makes Dr. Hauschka Deodorants’ so effective in fighting the undesirable side-effects of perspiration?

The key lies in the newly developed formulas, with their authentic character and the full power of their naturally astringent, anti-microbial and moisturising ingredients. Both products are vegan and contain neither aluminium chlorohydrate nor other soluble aluminium compounds which constrict the sweat glands. The fundamentally different formulas of the two deodorants combine effective skin care and proven protection. Deodorising ingredients were composed and refined with moisturising extracts of medicinal plants and natural essential oils.

  • Tests have shown that both products are very well tolerated by the skin and offer long-lasting effectiveness
  • Do not sting when applied directly after shaving
  • Do not leave any traces on clothing

Please note: If you are going through transition from anti-perspirant use, that blocks your pores, to natural and organic Dr. Hauschka Deodorants, you may experience a couple of weeks detox.

Dr.Hauschka Regenerating Care 2008; Dr.Hauschka Regenerationspflege 2008

Daily Mail > Possible link between anti-perspirants and breast cancer

Telegraph > Aluminium possible link to breast cancer

Editor’s note: When my partner’s Aunty was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer her oncologist advised “Switch to a natural deodorant such as Dr. Hauschka.” Of course her oncologist had no knowledge that I worked for Dr. Hauschka. I believe women should be made aware of comments such as this.

Why do we perspire?

Perspiring or sweating plays a vital role in maintaining normal health because it helps our bodies:

  • eliminate toxins
  • maintain the balance of salt levels
  • regulate the body temperature

On average we lose around 500mls to 1 litre of liquid a day through our skin. Generally, this evaporates very quickly.

We perspire

  • when we exert ourselves through exercise and physical activity
  • with the release of adrenaline due to fear or worry
  • when your environment is too warm

Interestingly, perspiration is almost odourless when it’s fresh, but when it stays on the skin it develops an odour. This smell is created by bacteria that breed in the warm, moist and nutrient-rich conditions created by perspiration.

What’s the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants?

Antiperspirants: Stop you from perspiring

Deodorants: Stop the bacteria from smelling, by killing the bacteria or neutralising the smell

The science behind deodorant

Scientists figured out that the best approach would be to prevent these bacteria from breeding, thereby having a deodorising action. The first commercial deodorant was launched in 1888. Unfortunately, in the quest for ever stronger and more effective deodorants, stronger and more powerful chemicals started to be used.

The science behind antiperspirants

Antiperspirants are based on ingredients such as aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium zirconium trichlorohydrate. These aluminium ions form a temporary blockage in the sweat ducts, stopping the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface.

Most antiperspirants contain ingredients which react with protein molecules present in perspiration and swell to form a gel-like substance. For these to be effective, their molecular size needs to be small enough to allow them to enter skin pores so that when they swell and turn to a gel, they effectively block the pores and prevent sweat from being secreted.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 11.35.47 am

What’s the alternative to chemical deodorants?

Zinc ricinoleate is the zinc salt of ricinoleic acid, extracted from the seeds of the castor oil plant. Zinc ricinoleate does not inhibit normal perspiration, and will not interfere with the natural flora of the skin. Instead, it ‘fixes’ the odours produced by bacterial decomposition in sweat so that they cannot be released into the atmosphere and cause the characteristic sweaty smell.

Chemicals in deodorants

Many familiar brands of deodorants contain triclosan. The chemicals in deodorants which prevent bacteria from growing have been linked to health problems ranging from skin irritation and contact dermatitis. Excessive use of spray deodorants have also been linked with more serious problems such as allergic reactions, asthma and breathing difficulties.

Chemicals in antiperspirants

Aluminium found in antiperspirants can cause inflammation, Aluminium chlorohydrate and Aluminium zirconium chlorohydrate are both used in chemical antiperspirants. These are both based on aluminium and can cause skin irritation.

Research suggests that aluminium-based compounds may be linked to elevated aluminium levels and health problems including breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Antiperspirants also have another downside – not only can they cause the problems mentioned above, but they also prevent the body from eliminating toxins through perspiration and reduce our ability to regulate body temperature.

Clarifying Day Oil

  • For Oily, Blemished Skin
  • Balances and regulates an oily, blemished skin
  • Rapidly-absorbing daily moisturiser that balances excessive oiliness
  • Refines the appearance of pores
  • Reduces the appearance of blemishes for a calm, beautiful complexion.
  • Apricot kernel, almond and wheat germ (rich source of healing vitamin E) oils balance the skin’s natural oil content, while anthyllis and carrot (rich source of healing provitamin A) extracts calm the skin
  • Neem, St. John’s wort and calendula extracts combine to visibly minimise redness and help maintain a healthy, radiant complexion

Applying our homeopathic knowledge of ‘like treats like’ we recommend an oil for an oily skin. It may seem counter-intuitive however, harsh products just ‘strip’ the skin creating imbalance and the skin produces more oil to compensate whereas Clarifying Day Oil calms and relaxes the skin.

If you get pimples then definitely add Coverstick into your morning regime, to treat and conceal with just the right amount of tea tree and manuka for their anti-bacterial properties, and tapioca starch which absorbs. Amazing product!

If Foundation is too rich for your skin then mix a little Translucent Bronzing Tint with your Clarifying Day Oil.

Please noteClarifying Day Oil may also be used as an Oil ‘serum’ by mixing a drop or two with Rose Day Cream for additional protection against the environment and an anti-oxidant boost for any skin condition.

Elisabeth Sigmund – Chapter 7

A sage bath essence was the only one of her products that Elisabeth Sigmund sold professionally in Sweden. It was called ‘Balett fot-elixir’ and was intended as a foot bath for dancers.

A developer with new ideas
Once the Sigmund’s had established themselves in Sweden, Elisabeth Sigmund finally had the time she needed to work on her skin care products and build up a fixed range. To her, skin care was both a form of therapy and a kind of health care. Each formulation was therefore based on a nurturing plant with ingredients that affect the skin. Her products solely contained natural ingredients. Instead of using isolated active ingredients, Elisabeth Sigmund worked with whole plant parts. She did not develop her products for specific skin types, such as oily or dry skin, but instead assumed that everyone’s skin is able to find its way back to a balanced state using its own strength. She therefore talked about temporary skin conditions that have the potential to change. Her cosmetics were intended to support this change by triggering the skin’s own regenerative powers.

A raw materials importer with high quality standards
It was not so easy to get good quality ingredients such as beeswax, natural plant oils, almonds, natural essential oils, silk or dried plants for the formulations. Elisabeth Sigmund ordered most of these from shops in Germany and Austria where she was sometimes able to purchase organic products. As a result of her interest in Rudolf Steiner, which had taken her in the direction of biodynamic agriculture, this criterion was important to her. She obtained fresh plants, such as moisture-rich liquorice roots, from a Swedish gardener and ordered WALA medicinal ampoules, which she had found out about from her anthroposophic doctor in Stockholm, directly from WALA in Eckwälden.

A cosmetician by calling
Elisabeth Sigmund gave her acquaintances the skin care products she had made to test. When they noticed how well the products worked for them, they offered to pay Elisabeth Sigmund to treat them. Over time, it became too time consuming to visit all of her clients at home. Therefore, in the 1950s, Elisabeth Sigmund opened the Salong för Skönhetsvård (literally meaning ‘beauty salon’) in Stockholm.

A producer with ideas
Elisabeth Sigmund’s first fixed basic range, which she used to provide treatments in her beauty salon, consisted of rose cream following her grandmother’s recipe as well as another face cream, face toner, cleansing cream with ground almonds, face mask, sage bath essence, silk powder, a skin treatment and various facial oils. Karl Sigmund constructed small pieces of production and filling equipment. For example, he attached a mixer with a crank arm to a bowl for stirring creams. He also converted a small bucket into a filling station for face lotion by installing a hose with a tap just above the bottom. The products, which contained no preservatives, could be kept in the refrigerator for about a month. For that reason, Elisabeth Sigmund only produced small quantities.

Elisabeth Sigmund produced small quantities of her own natural skin care products in her Stockholm skin care studio. She noted down her formulations on index cards and used a set of precision scales to accurately weigh out the necessary amounts of natural ingredients.

Skin Care During Menopause

Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 11.33.59 am

During menopause skin is likely to experience changes. Hot flushes may be so problematic that using warming Rose products such as Rose Day Cream and/or Firming Mask may no longer be appropriate for this stage. Products with cooling properties or don’t specifically warm your skin are:

Regenerating Serum & Regenerating Day Cream
Quince Day Cream
Rejuvenating Mask
Moisturising Day Cream

Toned Day Cream – the original BB cream – is a great alternative too. As we age our skin becomes a little pallid, so Toned Day Cream puts the warm tones back into your skin, helps to even skin tone and provides plenty of moisture.

Some women experience severe break-outs for the first time in their life during menopause. So skin care needs to change to reflect this. Cover Stick is a must product for treating and healing any pimples as quickly as possible. Rejuvenating Mask is also highly recommended twice weekly. If you’ve been using Moisturising Day Cream, you may find this product too active for your sebaceous glands during this time of transition.

Other women experience extreme dryness (lack of oil) and/or dehydration (lack of water). Use Moisturising Mask twice weekly for a boost. You may also use Moisturising Mask as your daily moisturiser until condition improves. We also recommend light Moisturising Day Cream to activate a dry skin to produce more oil. Hydration plumps the skin so drinking your 6-8 glasses of water a day is extremely important.

Include specific support for your skin with Intensive Treatment 05 for Menopausal Skin.

Intensive Treatment 05 for Menopausal Skin
Specialised care for skin during menopause

Please note: change of name soon to Intensive Treatment for Menopausal Skin

Dr. Hauschka Intensive Treatments are formulated for skin that has lost its natural balance and requires focused care. Intensive Treatment for Menopausal Skin balances hormonally related skin changes while supporting your skin’s natural processes of renewal. The appearance of blotchiness and spots is diminished for a calm, even complexion.

Formulation: Rhythmitised dilutions of Daisy and Rose work with gemstones Argentite, Ruby powder and Black Cohosh to revitalise dull, lifeless skin and reduce the appearance of redness and irregular pigmentation.

Black Cohosh is well known for its use during menopause. Its rhizomes survive the winter, and it is these life-bearing rootstocks that are processed. They are much appreciated in particular during the phase of change surrounding the menopause. The Black Cohosh extract in Dr.Hauschka Skin Care products is prepared using our own special rhythmic process.

Rubies are red gemstones, so fitting with our homeopathic guidelines of like treats like, red treats redness. Ruby has a harmonising effect on the skin helping to reduce the appearance of redness and blotchiness. Rubies are one of the oldest traditional healing stones.

Argentite is a bluish-grey-to-black silver mineral with a metallic sheen. In combination with the other ingredients in Intensive Treatment 05, Argentite supports the skin’s own processes of renewal.

Skin cells are renewed every 28 days. Mirroring this same regenerative cycle, Intensive Treatments should be used as a 28 day entire treatment in the one bottle, to be used instead of a Toner. Intensive Treatments work most effectively when used four times a year as a stimulus. After morning and evening cleansing, mist 4-5 pumps onto the face, neck and décolleté then gently press into the skin.

The Magic of Natural and Organic Perfume

Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 2.59.14 pm

Zimmermann has a dream: to create the fragrance that captivates people’s senses, that transforms them, and perhaps create a peaceful world.

Jörg Zimmermann’s workplace is all the way at the top, just below the roof of WALA /Dr. Hauschka. Here he finds the quiet he needs to stimulate all the senses. In his head, he creates the fragrances that lend Dr. Hauschka products their individual note. “Every product is different and thus requires its own statement.” Dr. Hauschka Skin Care uses exclusively natural substances compatible with the uncompromising demands of the company’s philosophy. “My job is to convey these values in my fragrance creations. None of the human senses is so old and so directly connected to the limbic system as the sense of smell. It is closely related to memory and emotion,” says Jörg Zimmermann. “Fragrances make it possible to travel through time, to recall that which was long forgotten. Nothing triggers more spontaneous attraction or rejection than fragrances – they are encrypted messages transmitted by our environment. The magic of scent has always been of major importance; the sensual allure of fragrance enjoys a long tradition.” The ‘Master of Fragrances’ at Dr. Hauschka has been under their spell for as long as he can remember. As a result, it was always his hope to work with fragrances. It is a characteristic trait of Jörg Zimmermann to pursue goals with passion and perseverance. “One needs this trait as a perfumer. You always have to be on top of things, not be discouraged by failed experiments.” It takes months, sometimes years, for a new fragrance to be created. Zimmermann writes down hundreds of formulas only to discard them in the end. Perhaps two of 100 fragrance creations are ever actually implemented. “The ability to smell analytically is important.” He uses his nose to deconstruct a perfume into its components and recognise what ingredients disturb the fragrance’s harmonious perception, what amounts to increase or decrease, and what substances to add or remove. “Every fragrance consists of top notes, middle notes and base notes”, explains Jörg Zimmermann. The top notes form the initial impression, the introduction of the perfume so to speak. They are followed by the middle notes, which convey the heart of the fragrance and give it shape. The third and final fragrance note is the base note. It represents the finale of the fragrance, much like in a symphony orchestra. “The trick is to harmonise these three parts, to co-ordinate their temporal and spatial progression.”

Portait Parfumeur Joerg Zimmermann 4.4.08

The member of the French Perfumers’ Society requires absolute quiet during his work. This allows him to stimulate all the senses and recall images from his memory. After all, creating a scent involves much more than simply combining raw materials. It connects the world of thought with the world of feeling. Jörg Zimmermann composes, hears internal music, senses a wonderful lightness. Like a painter who has the image he wants to paint in front of his eyes, Zimmermann first creates the perfume in his head. He looks for base harmonies, previously combined individual scent compositions, to serve as a foundation. And then everything begins to flow. Then the perfumer begins to experiment with the tones of his “fragrance organ”. This is the name given to the collection of essential oils from which he selects the key components for a fragrance. Some 200 substances are available, of which Zimmermann uses various numbers as ingredients in his composition. The more technical skills of developing perfumes can certainly be learned, but the ability to compose fragrances must be inborn. Jörg Zimmermann undeniably has this skill. “But I didn’t know what path to follow at first to make professional use of my abilities,” he recalls. So he studied art and cultural education, sharpening his artistic, literary and musical senses. There is no classical course of training to become a perfumer, neither in Germany nor abroad. But France is considered the mother country of perfume. At the age of 30, Jörg Zimmerman journeyed to southern France – more specifically, to Grasse, the capital of the perfume world. Gloves were perfumed in this city near the Côte d’Azur as early as the 17th century. Born in Tettnang, Germany and raised in the city of Baden-Baden, Zimmermann studied at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery from 2004 to 2006 and then worked with leading perfumers. He has been working for Dr. Hauschka since summer 2006, continuing a long-running tradition: the company has never purchased fragrances, choosing to develop them itself instead. “This helps our products to maintain their unmistakable character,” emphasises Zimmermann. Dr. Hauschka skin care products contain no chemical/synthetic fragrances, despite their extensive availability on the market: “We use exclusively natural essential oils of the very highest quality.” Jörg Zimmermann is convinced: “Our customers notice this uniqueness, this strong foundation of knowledge which flows into our products. The soul senses it and is able to regenerate itself – along with the entire person.”

Rose Nurturing Body Wash
Composition with rose – enveloping and mysterious

“As I developed my ideas I kept the following questions in mind: What is the smell of a rose with nurturing and harmonising powers? What qualities does a rose emanate that capture our attention? When you compare the scent of roses, you discover that there is a broad spectrum within the genus. I searched for the most beautiful aspects. Usually fresh, citrus-like fragrances are emitted from the centre of the bud and develop as the rose opens. I discovered orange blossoms, delicate and spicy clove tones, and woody, velvety and creamy components. I was aiming for a creation in which the rose is light and playful, but at the same time very regal and seductive. A rosy and floral heart accord forms the main body around which the other individual aspects are grouped. An amber-like base gives the composition a creamy and gentle finish, which I interpreted using sandalwood and vanilla. They radiate a mysterious and velvety depth.”

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Almond Soothing Body Wash
Composition with almond – delicate and floral

“It was my wish to create a tangible experience of the progression from blossom to fruit, bringing in all these associations. This invoked images of the early days of spring, when the radiant blue sky shimmers above a sea of delicate pink blossoms that appear to dance in the mild air. The idea represented by the composition with almond is the chiffon-like transparency of a pink rose. I used bergamot, ylang-ylang and rose to interpret this floral chord. A balsamic base of tonka bean and vanilla sweeps us away to a sumptuous oriental palace and awakens memories of sweet, pleasurable indulgences.”

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Wash
Composition with lemon and lemon grass – sparkling and refreshing

“I was on the lookout for a truly special raw material. I discovered essential oil made from fresh gingerroot, which emits a very citric fragrance. We are mostly familiar with ginger in Asian cuisine, so there is a close association with lemongrass. In the top note we perceive lemon and lime, which have a refreshing and toning effect. Fresh gingerroot and lemongrass draw out the citric impression and create an increasing complexity. However, this is not meant to be a complicated fragrance, but rather a clear, refreshing concept that is made richer with exotic ingredients. I see two tendencies in this fragrance. The first is toward athleticism, dynamism and vitality; the second, the concentration that comes from increased alertness. The scent stimulates and creates a presence – a wonderful shot of refreshment.”

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Lavender Sandalwood Calming Body Wash
Composition of lavender and sandalwood – quiet and harmonising freshness

“I was looking for a special variety of lavender with a gentle floral note and a lot of elegance. I found it at an elevation of 1,000 metres. This lavender is notable for the sense of peace and harmony that it projects. However, it also possesses a certain gentle yet rejuvenating freshness. The Australian sandalwood works its charm in the background, embedded in a regal, ambery chord, which rounds off the quiet freshness of the lavender with an enveloping, amber-like warmth. For me the fragrance creates associations of Provençal villages rising from the morning mist along the lines of hills on the Côte d’Azur.”

The language of nature

Jörg Zimmermann, perfume specialist at Dr. Hauschka, tells us how he creates the Dr. Hauschka fragrances and what the secret code of nature is all about.

Dr. Hauschka: Can you train your sense of smell?
Jörg Zimmermann: Yes. It is not just about smelling it is about conscious smelling. It is like turning on a switch in your memory so that on smelling an individual substance you create associations with it and internalise the fragrance. Later, when you smell the substance again, you automatically associate it with certain imagery and can recognise it. Conscious smelling is a minor change in perception: we have a clear knowledge of how the fragrance affects us, where we smell it, how we perceive it and what we associate with it. Anyone who trains in this art and writes down their experiences will develop their own fragrance index for reference at any time.

Dr. Hauschka: Was there a specific moment when knew you were destined to be a perfume specialist?
Jörg Zimmermann: When I was four, I went exploring on my own in a nearby forest and had an intense experience with nature. I can still remember it well: at midday, the sun hit the forest at an angle, shining through the young trees and onto a small cluster of wood anemones that had sprung up all over the fresh forest floor. I suddenly felt like a face was looking at me; like these little flowers wanted to give me a message. I felt their desire to be looked at, but how was I to understand their essence? I looked at the flowers for a long time and fell in love with them. They bade me to move closer and absorb their silent message through their scent. I carefully knelt down on the ground and cautiously placed my nose by the opening of the greenish-yellow flowers. For a moment, I believed in magic; a natural power that dominates us and rules everything. Was this love in its purest form?
The joy I felt was overwhelming. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before. My greatest wish was to hold onto and remember it. Through scent, I had connected with nature. From then on, I could not help but wonder about the hidden world behind things. I wanted to understand the essence of everything I came across, remember things through their scent and enable others to share my experiences.

Dr. Hauschka: But is that actually possible? After all, we do not smell the plants directly but simply their fragrance through the products?
Jörg Zimmermann: It is not about smelling plants directly but rather how we are affected by our memory of doing so. Stimuli are needed to trigger the memory. If you imagine that each essential oil represents the essence of a plant, you can envisage what it means to convert this into a sensual experience that tells a story.
By integrating the essence of individual plants you create the essence of an overall product. This sensual processing method humanises the substance and makes it accessible.
As a perfume specialist, I regard it as my cultural duty to subject the essential oils to processes in which the ideas archetypically embedded in us become something that can be experienced. Only on smelling transitions do we actually develop the idea that the product aims to convey.
Dr. Hauschka: How do you develop a fragrance?
Jörg Zimmermann: It is very conscious, reflective work. I put myself in a state of heightened consciousness and imagine what will happen when I combine the proportions of each fragrance. For me, it is about revealing the secret laws of nature, or in other words discovering the meaning of each individual substance and how the idea of the fragrance could be logically realised so that when we smell it, we perceive an organic process and an atmosphere can be created. Secret

Dr. Hauschka: Secret laws of nature?
Jörg Zimmermann: It is like with music. I can press all the keys on a piano and make sound. Music is only created when I press certain keys in a certain way and a feeling arises from the logical sequence of the melody. The greater my understanding of nature’s secret code, the easier it is for people to enjoy all elements of a fragrance.
When I am working on a fragrance, I mentally collate the plants so that I can sense their smell. These are the times in which I have a clear picture of how things logically go together to create a metamorphosis and make tangible transitions between top and base notes.
In my memory, I always find part of one substance that contains part of another substance. There are some elements of fragrance that may be similar, such as bergamot, rose or neroli. I look at the similarities and differences so that I can add things to complement the former. Once all the parameters have been skilfully aligned and the fragrance and the idea are both tangible, something truly magical occurs.

Dr. Hauschka: Is that what makes Dr. Hauschka fragrances special?
Jörg Zimmermann: Yes. The top, middle and base notes of the Dr. Hauschka fragrances can be transmitted to the entire body. By perceiving the fragrance in different areas of our body, we trigger an inner vitality, which can be externally observed as a kind of aura. In contrast, conventional, synthetic fragrances are something we only wear externally, like accessories.
The high level of vitality and complexity associated with natural fragrances is extremely striking and explains why they are so important to humans. Humans too are highly complex and can wonderfully combine themselves with things that complement them. Attention and creativity, attraction and curiosity are created – but why is nature so good at this? It does not impose its will but instead adds refinement while stimulating and enlivening our body’s own activity.

Dr. Hauschka Roses

Screen Shot 2014-04-24 at 5.17.47 pm

The Damask Rose – Rosa damascena

Our Rose Essential Oil and Rose Water (Rose Hydrosol) are derived from The Damask Rose, so named after the city of Damascus in Syria. The Essential Oil from the most fragrant of roses is also known as Rose Otto (Ottoman Empire) or Attar of Rose(s).

Rosa damascena is a cultivated flower, no longer found growing wild, and the history of just where it came from is varied, but it’s generally understood as originating in the Middle East.

The Crusader Robert de Brie has been credited for bringing the Damask Rose from Syria to Europe sometime between 1254 and 1276. Other stories say the Romans brought the Damask Rose to England, and yet another account states that Henry VIII’s physician gifted him a Damask Rose around 1540.

The Apothecary’s Rose – Rosa gallica

We use Rosa gallica for Rose Wax and Rose Petal Extract.

The Apothecary’s Rose, known to botanists as Rosa gallica officinalis, is one of the most celebrated of all ancient roses.

In the Renaissance art of the 15th and 16th centuries, Rosa gallica (often depicted red, although really a deep pink) was one of the two most often painted roses, Rosa alba (white) being the other.

The petals of this rose were dried and rolled into beads, then strung into what became the rosary, hence the name.

The Apothecary’s Rose dates back much further in history than the Renaissance and is believed to have originated in ancient Persia. The rose is thought to have come to Europe either in the 12th or 13th century with knights returning from the Crusades.

By the middle of the 15th century, civil wars in medieval England had broken out in a melee of power grabs for the throne, known as the War of Roses. The Apothecary’s Rose had become the symbol of the House of Lancaster and the white Rosa alba the symbol of the House of York.  After Henry VII came to power in 1485, he chose to symbolise peace by creating a new symbol: the Apothecary’s Rose laid on top of Rosa alba, the ‘Tudor Rose’, which to this day remains the plant symbol of England.

The other story of how the Apothecary’s Rose came to Europe, the French side, is less dramatic. It is believed to have been returned to the Castle of Provins, a city close to Paris, by Thibault IV in 1250 upon his return from the Seventh Crusade. (Thibault died just three years later — apparently not because of the rose, however.) Provins became the European capital for the Apothecary’s Rose and it was renamed The Rose of Provins.

Dog Rose – Rosa canina

Our Rose Hip extract comes from Dog Rose, Rosa canina (canine).

Also known as Wild Rose, Dog Briar and Wild Briar, it has been used medicinally since the time of Hippocrates and was named Dog Rose by the Roman naturalist, Pliny, because it was believed the plant’s root would cure the bite of a mad dog.

The Dog Rose is high in antioxidants and the fruit, Rose Hips, are a rich source of Vitamin C used to make syrup, tea and jam.

Although it had been used medicinally for centuries it was during World War II that the plant came in to its own. During the war it was impossible for Great Britain to import fresh citrus fruits and without them scurvy became a threat to the population. Knowing rose hips were rich in Vitamin C the government arranged to have them harvested and processed into syrup. Because of this wise action scurvy was prevented.

15 Stress Less Tips

Screen Shot 2014-01-14 at 4.52.27 pm

1) Include relaxation in your week for instance, instead of watching tele, dance or do yoga in your living room. A recent study found reading reduced stress by a whopping 68% and listening to music 61%.

2) Go for a walk, preferably in nature, every morning for 30 minutes, maybe find a walking buddy. A 30 minute evening walk helps to clear your mind from the day’s work.

3) Talk about it, problem shared is a problem halved.

4) Breathe, deep breathe and stretch.

5) Go to bed earlier.

6) Focus on what you can control.

7) Reminisce about good times.

8) Look for opportunities in life’s challenges.

9) Stop worrying.

10) Lose yourself in a good book or a great movie.

11) Choose your reaction.

12) Put things into perspective, will this matter a year from now?

13) Do more of what brings you joy.

14) Laughter is the best medicine. SMILE! 🙂

Sensitive Skin

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 3.06.08 pm

A sensitive skin requires gentle skin care that also strengthens the condition towards a balanced and healthy skin.

How do I determine a Sensitive Skin Condition?

Redness, blotchy, thin skin. Possibly accompanied by permanently red cheek/nose region (visible capillaries), itching, flakiness. A skin that reacts easily.

Dr. Hauschka and Sensitive Skin

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care is particularly suited to a sensitive skin due to the gentle and strengthening nature of our products that are formulated to bring balance back to an unbalanced skin.

Often such a sensitive skin condition has come about through the use of overly harsh exfoliating products and/or lathering, overly alkaline cleansing products.

Dr. Hauschka product prescriptions are not black and white. Your particular skin condition is as uniquely individual as you are, therefore we always recommend having a facial treatment and seek advice from a Dr. Hauschka Esthetician for the optimum product prescription and daily regime. This is particularly so with a sensitive skin.

Recommended Daily Ritual

Cleansing Cream
Clarifying Toner
Regenerating Serum – if you also require support for a maturing skin
Day Cream*

Cleansing Milk
Clarifying Toner
Regenerating Serum – if required

We recommend Clarifying Toner for a sensitive skin because it contains Daisy which is anti-inflammatory and Echinacea for its anti-bacterial properties. Often a sensitive skin’s protection has been compromised with flakiness.

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 4.41.36 pm

*Day Cream:
Some sensitive skins also carry heat. If that’s the case look to day care with cooling properties such as Quince or Regenerating, Rose has warming properties.

Rose Day Cream Light: suitable for a sensitive skin
Rose Day Cream: suitable for a dry, sensitive skin, and contains St. John’s wort which is calming
Melissa Day Cream is specifically formulated for a Sensitive Combination (oily t-zone, dry/normal cheeks) skin
Quince Day Cream: usually recommended for a normal skin however the cooling and soothing properties of quince make it also an option for a sensitive skin
Toned Day Cream: our tinted moisturiser that’s suitable for a sensitive skin and also helps to conceal redness and even skin tone. For a skin that’s more on the dry side.
Regenerating Serum and/or Regenerating Day Cream are formulated to support a maturing sensitive skin

Extra Care

We highly recommend Soothing Mask as a twice a week mask treatment however it may be used also as a day time moisturiser to sooth and balance a hypersensitive skin or simply to give skin a helping hand boost for a month.

A skin cell cycle is 28-30 days and mirroring this rhythm we also highly recommend a 30 night treatment of Rhythmic Conditioner Sensitive, one ampoule per evening and instead of Toner to strengthen and calm a sensitive skin.

Screen Shot 2014-01-04 at 7.25.04 pm

If your skin requires more support than Rhythmic Conditioner Sensitive we would then recommend Intensive Treatment 03 a one bottle/one month treatment for a hypersensitive and/or stressed skin condition.

Facial Steam Bath
Prepares skin for deep cleansing

Of course Facial Steam Bath isn’t a Mask but as it’s Cleansing Clay Mask’s ‘partner product’ it really does need to appear here.

Facial Steam Bath supports the skin’s natural self-cleansing functions, reduces the appearance of redness and softens pores, blackheads and impurities in readiness for a deeper cleanse with Cleansing Clay Mask.

Formulation: Nasturtium, daisy and witch hazel support the skin’s self-cleansing processes, encourage natural exfoliation and minimise the appearance of enlarged pores.

Use: Once a week, dilute two teaspoons of Facial Steam Bath with ½ litre (500ml) of steaming water in a large bowl. Lean over the bowl, covering the head with towel, and steam for 5-10 minutes. Follow with Cleansing Clay Mask.

Firming Mask
For mature skin

Formulation: Rose, marsh mallow and pansy support the skin’s natural processes of renewal. Rose petal extract, rose wax, rose essential oil and avocado and almond oils support elasticity as they pamper and enrich the skin. Mango butter and beeswax enliven and replenish. Applying this mask supports your skin feeling stronger and smoother.

Tip: Make sure you include eye contour area too, as an eye mask.
