Roses in Rose Day Cream Light

It’s fascinating to see what the rose, a master of balance, can do for your skin,” explains pharmacist Annette Greco, Head of Product Development at Dr. Hauschka. “The rose is vibrantly young in character, but also durable; defensive yet open to its environment; thorny yet velvety. Its ability to embody these contrasting characteristics and combine them into one perfect aesthetic is proof of its harmonising potential for skin care and make-up. It’s for this reason that almost all Dr. Hauschka products contain rose in some form.”

Harmonising facial care

This includes the Rose Day Cream Light. The harmonising face cream softly envelopes the skin and imparts all the beneficial properties of rose. Contained within this smooth and light protective cream is the rose in all her forms: rose water, rose petal extract, rose hip extract, Damask rose essential oil and precious rose wax.

Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream Light

  • For sensitive, delicate skin
  • Strengthens and stabilises skin that is prone to redness
  • Harmonises and regulates moisture
  • Promotes the skin’s natural processes
  • The light texture absorbs quickly and provides the ideal base for make-up

Beautifully versatile: the roses in Dr. Hauschka products

“It’s not enough to simply say: this product contains rose – it’s also important to mention how,” explains Annette Greco, Head of Product Development at Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. “Sometimes we use essential rose oil, sometimes rose hip extract, other times rose water or rose petal extract.”

A fair partnership: organic essential rose oil

Dr. Hauschka also places great importance on sourcing its roses. To obtain our precious organic essential rose oil, for example, we work with partners all over the world – including in Ethiopia and Afghanistan. Dr. Hauschka has been supporting and advising a World Hunger Aid project in Afghanistan for several years. The cultivation of organic roses provides locals with an alternative to growing opium poppies, which are used to produce opiates such as heroin. Projects like these help people to secure their livelihoods and improve their financial and social situations. They also promote organic farming methods.

Rose Cultivation Partnership Projects

Damask Rose (Rosa damascena)

In creating the formulations for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, we draw on the many things that nature has to offer. For example, medicinal plants, botanical oils and waxes and genuine essential oils. Working with renewable natural raw materials has many logistical challenges, therefore long term planning is imperative for us. Many of the medicinal herbs we need are grown by our gardeners in our own biodynamic garden or in the fields on our Demeter certified farm, Sonnenhof. We also purchase other raw materials from regional sources as the climate is not suitable for growing some of the plant species from which we obtain raw materials. WALA*/Dr. Hauschka initiates and supports organic or biodynamic cultivation projects all over the world to ensure premium quality, sufficient quantity, continuity and longevity of ingredient supplies, and we embrace social responsibility and fair price principles. A prime example of this is Rose Essential Oil partnerships in Bulgaria, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and our most recently launched Rose Project in the Ethiopian Highlands.

Did you know?

• There are 30 organic or biodynamic roses in every tube of Rose Day Cream.

• We sell tubes of Rose Day Cream per minute worldwide!

• We purchase the highest quantity of the world’s highest grade organic rose essential oil. It comes from our biodynamic or organic cultivation partnership projects in Ethiopia, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria and Afghanistan.

• Approximately one hectare of roses is needed to obtain 1 kg of precious Rose Essential Oil, which is used in nearly all Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Make-up products and in many WALA medicines.

Harvesting roses in Ethiopia; Rosenernte Äthiopien
Rose Project – Ethiopian Highlands

When it comes to sources of Rose Essential Oil, countries such as Turkey, Bulgaria, Iran and Afghanistan come to mind – but Ethiopia? As it turns out, the Ethiopian highlands, which are well known for their coffee, provide the ideal conditions for growing the very fragrant Damask Rose, and it yields an exceptionally precious essential oil.

WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care support the Terra PLC Damask Rose Farm, a fair trade initiative in Ethiopia. We are helping to create a self-reliant and economically sustainable community by establishing a biodynamic resource for Damask Rose Essential Oil, a key ingredient in the Dr. Hauschka range.

In 2005 WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care provided Ethiopian grower, Fekade Lakew, with rose cuttings and introduced him to a consultant to train and advise on biodynamic cultivation methods. It took 7 years before the first harvest of rose blossoms. At that time, in 2012, Lakew also initiated the biodynamic certification process. Once certified, his farm was the sole certified biodynamic source of rose essential oil in Africa.

A key benefit of growing roses near the equator is that the lifespan of the bloom increases substantially, giving farmers twice the time to harvest, and requiring fewer pickers who can often be employed beyond the typical picking season. Ethiopian roses in particular are nearly twice as heavy as blossoms from other countries resulting in a greater yield from fewer plants.

WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care committed to purchasing all of the rose essential oil produced at Fekade Lakew’s farm for a period of ten years, and 60-70% thereafter. This ensures that the initiative has ample time to establish itself without becoming dependent upon a single customer for all its revenue in the long term.

Damask Rose Essential Oil from Ethiopia is used in the formulations of nearly all Dr. Hauschka products, including Rose Day Cream, Rose Day Cream Light, Rose Nurturing Body Wash, Rose Deodorant, Rose Nurturing Body Oil, Rose Nurturing Body Moisturiser, and many of our make-up products. When a Dr. Hauschka customer purchases products featuring this hero ingredient, she/he helps support the growth of this fair trade effort in Ethiopia and Dr. Hauschka’s other rose cultivation projects around the globe.

WALA medicines; WALA Heilmittel GmbH
Rose Project – Iran

The cultivation of roses in ‘Persia’ is an ancient tradition. There are 1500 growers who work as independent operators for Zahra Rosewater Company, our partner in Iran. Through biodynamic practices over the last few decades the annual production yield is now 900 tonnes of rose water (rose hydrosol) and 150 kgs of rose essential oil. WALA/Dr. Hauschka purchase more than one third of all the rose oil and dried rose blossoms that Zahra produces. The Iranian government subsidises chemical fertilisers, so initially it was extremely difficult to convince the farmers to refrain from using them, and to embrace biodynamic agriculture. Education and training were and still are important pillars of the collaboration with these growers.

Anyone working with Zahra is family and as part of this family-oriented collaboration, older people no longer able to work receive a kind of pension, Zahra has improved the water supply to the villages and supports the schools. A local health centre set up by Zahra guarantees primary health care. Zahra makes it possible for gifted children to attend a special school. The hope is that they will return to their villages with a good education and work there. The idea is working, Lalehzar has the lowest unemployment rate in the region. Zahra also donates part of its profits to the orphanages of the Sanati Foundation.

WALA Medicines; WALA Heilmittel GmbH
Rose Project – Bulgaria

Rose oil has been produced for the French perfume industry since the end of the 19th century. These days, however, the perfume industry uses mainly synthetic chemical ‘perfume’ as a much cheaper option. WALA/Dr. Hauschka  instigated long term supply contracts with Bulgarian rose growers and the provision of loans to support our new partners. Organic Certification was gained in 2003.

rose flowers, Ethiopia; Rosenblüten, Äthiopien
Rose Project – Turkey

Some 320 mountain farmers in the Baskoop Rose Co-operative have adapted their methods of cultivation to supply certified organic roses. WALA is significantly contributing to securing the livelihoods of the local farming families and to the survival of the traditional and labour intensive rose distilling industry. WALA also bears all costs for agricultural, technical and organic consultations and some of the costs of certification.

Auf dem Rosenfeld
Rose Project – Afghanistan

Did you know that 80% of the world’s heroin comes from Afghanistan? In order to combat the opium trade in Afghanistan and on the initiative of German Agro Action a project was set up for producing rose oil in 2004.  This project offers an alternative means of securing a sustainable and honourable livelihood for local farmers. WALA/Dr. Hauschka expressed an interest in the project in 2006 and has been supporting it ever since. Today over 700 farmers are growing organic Damask roses on more than 100 hectares of land. A large volume of organic rose oil is produced, most of which is sold to WALA/Dr. Hauschka.  This ancient Afghan tradition has been brought back to life with this budding partnership.

Our Rose Essential Oil is derived from Rosa damascena, named so from Damascus in Syria, also known as the Damask Rose.  This most fragrant of roses produces the highest quality Rose Essential Oil, also known as Rose Otto, or Attar of Roses.

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This blog tells you more about the Rose: where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

Raw material profile

Over 20,000 varieties, innumerable colours from yellow, orange and white to pink and red, single and double flowers, bushes, climbing or erect growth. The range of rose (Rosa spp.) varieties is seemingly endless. Its wild bushy forms come from the Orient and are thought to have spread from Persia and Babylon via Egypt to Greece and Italy. Despite their differences, roses have one thing in common: the fivefold symmetry of their flowers. In other words, each flower head has five petals or a number of petals that is divisible by five. Each of these petals has its own form. Even the five green base leaves that cup the blossom petals from below differ from one another. Rose hips develop from the rose petals. As the fruits of the rose, their form is as diverse as that of the petals. A further typical characteristic of roses are their thorns, which are actually classed as prickles from a botanical perspective. Unlike thorns, which are created through the transformation of stems or leaves and grow as a fused part of the plant, prickles can be easily detached. The original rose varieties firmly embed themselves in the ground with their deep roots. Some hybrid tea roses lack this strong root system and are therefore grafted to the roots of a dog rose.

Roses can be used in all sorts of ways. Rose petals contain essential oil, tannins, nectar, lipids, wax and resin, among other things. With the aid of distillation, both rose water and essential rose oil can be obtained from the rose petals. Rose oil has been shown to contain more than 400 individual constituents. Due to its complexity, the natural scent of a rose cannot be 100% synthetically replicated. In aromatherapy, essential rose oil is used for its relaxant, de-stressing and mood-lifting properties. The wax extracted from the rose petals has a very fine and silky consistency. Rose hips contain high levels of vitamin C, plant acids and pectins, and are strengthening.

Ingredients in Rose Nurturing Body Cream

Four rose preparations take effect in Rose Nurturing Body Cream. Rose wax, essential rose oil and extracts of wild rose fruits and rose petals harmonise the skin. They form the heart of the balancing Body Cream, which offers warmth and serenity by enveloping the senses in a wondrous fragrance of roses based on a rich woodiness. The creamy yet rich formulation stimulates and fortifies the skin’s natural protective abilities. Shea butter from the organic wild collection project initiated by Dr. Hauschka in Burkina Faso joins forces with almond and jojoba oil to provide intensive skin care. The result: velvety soft skin.

Why is rose used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

The Rose, she’s full of contrasts and contradiction in the way she expresses herself. She’s strong yet also soft; resistant and thorny yet tender, smells sweet yet also bitter. She opens with fragrance yet contracts with her abundance of firming tannins.

Balancing, harmonising and strengthening for your skin, gentle and nurturing yet also exotic for your senses. The Rose is a symbol of the purest harmony. She has the strength to bring together her contrasting elements and create complete strength of expression.

Different preparations highlights different aspects of the rose: the essential oil sends us on a journey full of dreams, from which we gather strength. The warm oil extract with accentuates the rose’s soothing, rich and protective qualities, while aqueous preparations are dominated by her fortifying and generally harmonising abilities.

Origin, cultivation and processing

For Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, we use rose extracts that have been prepared in several different ways: essential rose oil, rose water, rose wax, oil extracts from dried rose petals, aqueous, rhythmitised extracts from fresh rose petals and extracts of wild rose fruits (rose hips).

We procure the essential rose oil from our independent partners in Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Iran and Turkey. These obtain the oil from Damask rose petals through the use of steam distillation. It takes about a hectare of roses to obtain a kilogram of the valuable oil, which is used in many Dr. Hauschka skin care products. The partners grow the roses using certified organic or Demeter cultivation methods. Our agricultural consultants regularly visit the countries and support them with their experience. Grants for the purchase of rose cuttings or the construction of distilleries help new partners who are just starting out in rose cultivation. This is in line with our commitment to high quality. As, whenever possible, we only use raw materials obtained from biodynamic or certified organic cultivation, we believe that it is very important to establish new, independent raw material partnerships. With the aid of our support and guaranteed purchase prices, new jobs and better living standards are created locally. In Afghanistan, for example, the cultivation of roses offers people an alternative to growing opium poppies.

Essential rose oil in Demeter quality comes from a rose farm at an altitude of 2,900 metres. This is the first African rose oil from the south of the Sahara.

Certified organic essential rose oil is produced by a community that has organised itself as a kind of corporate foundation. The project was initiated, and for many years supported, by the World Hunger Organisation with the aim of offering an alternative to the cultivation of opium poppies.

We obtain organic-quality essential rose oil and dried rose petals from a company in southern Iran which belongs to a foundation that demonstrates a high level of social and cultural commitment.
Further information about rose cultivation in Iran

We obtain essential rose oil in organic and Demeter quality as well as rose water and rose wax from Turkey. We have worked with a cooperative in the south-west of the country for more than 20 years.

We obtain organically certified essential rose oil from several small producers in the Rose Valley, which has a century-old tradition of rose oil production.

The rose hips from the dog rose (Rosa canina) come from various sources including our own Demeter farm, the Sonnenhof.

The word rose is thought to come from the Indo-Germanic word word or vrad, the meaning of which is retained in Sanskrit as vrad = tender. Almost all of the world’s languages have a word for the rose; it is only absent in the language of the Inuits.

The rose was already the symbol for love, beauty and grace at a very early stage and in Greece it also signified a great lust for life. This wondrous creation seemed to be so unearthly that in many cultures it was seen as a gift from the gods, particularly those of love and fertility.

The rose is also the flower of wisdom and a clear mind. Sub rose dictum: the dictum under the rose was the stock phrase of secret societies such as the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons, which adopted the white rose as their symbol and hung it over their table as a stuccoed rose. A promise made under the rose was deemed to be completely confidential.

The rose’s golden age as a healing plant came with the pharmacists’ rose (Rosa gallic) in the 13th century in Proving near Paris, where it arrived from Damascus. For almost 600 years Proving was the centre of medicinal rose cultivation. Medicines made from roses were sent from there to all over the world.

Sage Mint Deodorant and Rose Deodorant

The formulations of Dr. Hauschka Deodorant were optimised in 2015. They rely on the authentic nature and the full force of their natural ingredients. The effective formulas make it difficult for odour causing bacteria to grow. As a finely balanced composition, the two roll-ons protect and care for the skin, are well tolerated by the skin, and do not stain and do not contain pore constricting aluminium salts. An elegant, delicate fragrance of rose and herb and the fresh touch of sage and mint.

Sage Mint Deodorant – herb fresh reliability

The oil-free Dr. Hauschka Sage Mint Deodorant contains the essences of sage and witch hazel, two naturally effective, anti-microbial and astringent components. The vivacious fragrance of mint and the natural bouquet of sage harmonise to provide a long-lasting feeling of freshness. Feel fresh – in every situation

New Dr. Hauschka deodorants provide protection and care for the skin. Whether during exercise or in stressful situations, the body starts to sweat under a wide variety of circumstances. Perspiration is a completely normal metabolic function, but it can be unpleasant in certain situations. This is why the new deodorants from Dr. Hauschka inhibit the growth of bacteria and cover odours naturally. However, they do not suppress the process of perspiration itself – which means they do not need to contain aluminium compounds.

Like a balm for the skin, Rose Deodorant contains moisturising jojoba oil, while Sage Mint Deodorant has a gel-like consistency and is oil-free. Both stay on the skin longer than short-acting deodorant sprays, imparting a lasting feeling of natural freshness.

How quickly and how much a person perspires depends on a number of factors – diet, clothing, and individual levels of activity and stress. Perspiration regulates the body’s temperature, eliminates metabolic wastes and combines with the skin’s acid mantle to form a barrier that protects us from harmful germs.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 10.37.33 am

What makes Dr. Hauschka Deodorants’ so effective in fighting the undesirable side-effects of perspiration?

The key lies in the newly developed formulas, with their authentic character and the full power of their naturally astringent, anti-microbial and moisturising ingredients. Both products are vegan and contain neither aluminium chlorohydrate nor other soluble aluminium compounds which constrict the sweat glands. The fundamentally different formulas of the two deodorants combine effective skin care and proven protection. Deodorising ingredients were composed and refined with moisturising extracts of medicinal plants and natural essential oils.

  • Tests have shown that both products are very well tolerated by the skin and offer long-lasting effectiveness
  • Do not sting when applied directly after shaving
  • Do not leave any traces on clothing

Please note: If you are going through transition from anti-perspirant use, that blocks your pores, to natural and organic Dr. Hauschka Deodorants, you may experience a couple of weeks detox.

Dr.Hauschka Regenerating Care 2008; Dr.Hauschka Regenerationspflege 2008

Daily Mail > Possible link between anti-perspirants and breast cancer

Telegraph > Aluminium possible link to breast cancer

Editor’s note: When my partner’s Aunty was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer her oncologist advised “Switch to a natural deodorant such as Dr. Hauschka.” Of course her oncologist had no knowledge that I worked for Dr. Hauschka. I believe women should be made aware of comments such as this.

Why do we perspire?

Perspiring or sweating plays a vital role in maintaining normal health because it helps our bodies:

  • eliminate toxins
  • maintain the balance of salt levels
  • regulate the body temperature

On average we lose around 500mls to 1 litre of liquid a day through our skin. Generally, this evaporates very quickly.

We perspire

  • when we exert ourselves through exercise and physical activity
  • with the release of adrenaline due to fear or worry
  • when your environment is too warm

Interestingly, perspiration is almost odourless when it’s fresh, but when it stays on the skin it develops an odour. This smell is created by bacteria that breed in the warm, moist and nutrient-rich conditions created by perspiration.

What’s the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants?

Antiperspirants: Stop you from perspiring

Deodorants: Stop the bacteria from smelling, by killing the bacteria or neutralising the smell

The science behind deodorant

Scientists figured out that the best approach would be to prevent these bacteria from breeding, thereby having a deodorising action. The first commercial deodorant was launched in 1888. Unfortunately, in the quest for ever stronger and more effective deodorants, stronger and more powerful chemicals started to be used.

The science behind antiperspirants

Antiperspirants are based on ingredients such as aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium zirconium trichlorohydrate. These aluminium ions form a temporary blockage in the sweat ducts, stopping the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface.

Most antiperspirants contain ingredients which react with protein molecules present in perspiration and swell to form a gel-like substance. For these to be effective, their molecular size needs to be small enough to allow them to enter skin pores so that when they swell and turn to a gel, they effectively block the pores and prevent sweat from being secreted.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 11.35.47 am

What’s the alternative to chemical deodorants?

Zinc ricinoleate is the zinc salt of ricinoleic acid, extracted from the seeds of the castor oil plant. Zinc ricinoleate does not inhibit normal perspiration, and will not interfere with the natural flora of the skin. Instead, it ‘fixes’ the odours produced by bacterial decomposition in sweat so that they cannot be released into the atmosphere and cause the characteristic sweaty smell.

Chemicals in deodorants

Many familiar brands of deodorants contain triclosan. The chemicals in deodorants which prevent bacteria from growing have been linked to health problems ranging from skin irritation and contact dermatitis. Excessive use of spray deodorants have also been linked with more serious problems such as allergic reactions, asthma and breathing difficulties.

Chemicals in antiperspirants

Aluminium found in antiperspirants can cause inflammation, Aluminium chlorohydrate and Aluminium zirconium chlorohydrate are both used in chemical antiperspirants. These are both based on aluminium and can cause skin irritation.

Research suggests that aluminium-based compounds may be linked to elevated aluminium levels and health problems including breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Antiperspirants also have another downside – not only can they cause the problems mentioned above, but they also prevent the body from eliminating toxins through perspiration and reduce our ability to regulate body temperature.

Clarifying Day Oil

  • For Oily, Blemished Skin
  • Balances and regulates an oily, blemished skin
  • Rapidly-absorbing daily moisturiser that balances excessive oiliness
  • Refines the appearance of pores
  • Reduces the appearance of blemishes for a calm, beautiful complexion.
  • Apricot kernel, almond and wheat germ (rich source of healing vitamin E) oils balance the skin’s natural oil content, while anthyllis and carrot (rich source of healing provitamin A) extracts calm the skin
  • Neem, St. John’s wort and calendula extracts combine to visibly minimise redness and help maintain a healthy, radiant complexion

Applying our homeopathic knowledge of ‘like treats like’ we recommend an oil for an oily skin. It may seem counter-intuitive however, harsh products just ‘strip’ the skin creating imbalance and the skin produces more oil to compensate whereas Clarifying Day Oil calms and relaxes the skin.

If you get pimples then definitely add Coverstick into your morning regime, to treat and conceal with just the right amount of tea tree and manuka for their anti-bacterial properties, and tapioca starch which absorbs. Amazing product!

If Foundation is too rich for your skin then mix a little Translucent Bronzing Tint with your Clarifying Day Oil.

Please noteClarifying Day Oil may also be used as an Oil ‘serum’ by mixing a drop or two with Rose Day Cream for additional protection against the environment and an anti-oxidant boost for any skin condition.

A sage bath essence was the only one of her products that Elisabeth Sigmund sold professionally in Sweden. It was called ‘Balett fot-elixir’ and was intended as a foot bath for dancers.

A developer with new ideas
Once the Sigmund’s had established themselves in Sweden, Elisabeth Sigmund finally had the time she needed to work on her skin care products and build up a fixed range. To her, skin care was both a form of therapy and a kind of health care. Each formulation was therefore based on a nurturing plant with ingredients that affect the skin. Her products solely contained natural ingredients. Instead of using isolated active ingredients, Elisabeth Sigmund worked with whole plant parts. She did not develop her products for specific skin types, such as oily or dry skin, but instead assumed that everyone’s skin is able to find its way back to a balanced state using its own strength. She therefore talked about temporary skin conditions that have the potential to change. Her cosmetics were intended to support this change by triggering the skin’s own regenerative powers.

A raw materials importer with high quality standards
It was not so easy to get good quality ingredients such as beeswax, natural plant oils, almonds, natural essential oils, silk or dried plants for the formulations. Elisabeth Sigmund ordered most of these from shops in Germany and Austria where she was sometimes able to purchase organic products. As a result of her interest in Rudolf Steiner, which had taken her in the direction of biodynamic agriculture, this criterion was important to her. She obtained fresh plants, such as moisture-rich liquorice roots, from a Swedish gardener and ordered WALA medicinal ampoules, which she had found out about from her anthroposophic doctor in Stockholm, directly from WALA in Eckwälden.

A cosmetician by calling
Elisabeth Sigmund gave her acquaintances the skin care products she had made to test. When they noticed how well the products worked for them, they offered to pay Elisabeth Sigmund to treat them. Over time, it became too time consuming to visit all of her clients at home. Therefore, in the 1950s, Elisabeth Sigmund opened the Salong för Skönhetsvård (literally meaning ‘beauty salon’) in Stockholm.

A producer with ideas
Elisabeth Sigmund’s first fixed basic range, which she used to provide treatments in her beauty salon, consisted of rose cream following her grandmother’s recipe as well as another face cream, face toner, cleansing cream with ground almonds, face mask, sage bath essence, silk powder, a skin treatment and various facial oils. Karl Sigmund constructed small pieces of production and filling equipment. For example, he attached a mixer with a crank arm to a bowl for stirring creams. He also converted a small bucket into a filling station for face lotion by installing a hose with a tap just above the bottom. The products, which contained no preservatives, could be kept in the refrigerator for about a month. For that reason, Elisabeth Sigmund only produced small quantities.

Elisabeth Sigmund produced small quantities of her own natural skin care products in her Stockholm skin care studio. She noted down her formulations on index cards and used a set of precision scales to accurately weigh out the necessary amounts of natural ingredients.
