Elisabeth Sigmund, Co-Founder Dr. Hauschka

In memory of Elisabeth Sigmund

25th October 1914 – 20th December 2013

Elisabeth Sigmund, the co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of 20 December 2013 at the age of 99.

Elisabeth Sigmund was a key figure in the development of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care in the 1960s. She also developed the Dr. Hauschka Facial Treatment methods that Dr. Hauschka Estheticians are still taught and use in their work today.

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 9.47.31 AM
Elisabeth working in the laboratory at WALA/Dr. Hauschka

It was early on in life when Elisabeth Sigmund first took a passionate interest in cosmetics. After completing her school leaving exams and two semesters of a medical degree in Vienna, she trained to become a qualified esthetician.

Throughout her life, Elisabeth Sigmund had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and conducted extensive independent studies into cosmetically active medicinal plants. She consistently used her findings to develop her skin care products.

Elisabeth 1932
Elisabeth 1932

In 1948, she emigrated to Stockholm with her husband and received permission from the Swedish King to open a Cosmetics Institute. There, she began producing skin-normalising cosmetics on a larger scale for the institute itself and continued to develop the formulations for her products. It was during this time that she came up with the idea of oil-free night time skin care after seeing such positive effects on her clients.

Elisabeth around 1927 and 1945
Elisabeth around 1927 and 1945

In 1955, Elisabeth Sigmund had her first visit to WALA/Dr. Hauschka in Eckwälden after her husband had experienced such good results with WALA medicines. Also a Swedish student had spoken of WALA products with such fervour that Elisabeth had the company send her some of their anthroposophical homeopathic medicines, which she used to further develop her skin care products.

In 1962, Elisabeth Sigmund received a letter from Dr. Rudolf Hauschka asking her for ideas for a ‘very special’ approach to skin care, in line with the WALA principles.

Her detailed reply went on for pages and was met with an instant invitation to Eckwälden, the home of WALA/Dr. Hauschka. Dr. Rudolf Hauschka expressed his enthusiasm for Elisabeth Sigmund’s ideas by commenting “I have been in love you ever since receiving your letter…”.

Three weeks of intensive discussions led to a joint decision to develop a very special skin care range based on entirely new concepts. In the years that followed, the formulations for this new range were developed with WALA’s senior doctors and pharmacists.

All developments were firmly based on Elisabeth Sigmund’s ground-breaking guiding principle: the activation of the skin’s own healthy function.

The first natural and organic skin care range was launched in 1967.

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 10.14.41 AM

In 1969, Elisabeth Sigmund moved from Sweden to Germany. From then onwards, she shared her extensive knowledge with WALA in person and played a key role in the creation of many products. She remained a valued consultant for all matters relating to Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Dr. Hauschka treatments until shortly before her death and was always willing to listen to the ideas and concerns presented by the future generations.

We are deeply thankful to Elisabeth Sigmund for her decisive contribution to WALA/Dr. Hauschka’s development and commemorate her life’s work with the utmost respect and appreciation. Her curiosity, energy and knowledge will remain an example to us for all time.

9 Tips for Beauty Sleep

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 10.15.35 am

Putting the beauty back into beauty sleep

Adults need 7-9 hours sleep a night. Here are some of our top tips for switching off, unwinding and getting a good night sleep. Wake with radiant, refreshed skin in the morning.

When you sleep, your body recharges, so you wake up feeling refreshed. If you repeatedly don’t get enough sleep, it shows in your face – dark circles under your eyes and poor skin condition. During the night, the skin’s natural replenishing and repairing cycle is active. If you want to look fresh as a daisy, make sure you get enough sleep each night. Sleep is a powerful beauty treatment.

Screen Shot 2015-02-27 at 1.10.07 pm

1) Calming and Relaxing Lavender

We recommend Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence in your bath or in your compressing and hydrating basin water for your evening facial cleanse.

All of our Moor (peat extract) Lavender and Lavender Sandalwood products aid relaxation.

Tip: Pour some Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence in a bowl and add very hot water. Place in your bedroom so the aroma disperses.

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 10.30.17 am

2) Set a regular bed time and wake up time routine

It supports your body clock if you go to bed and get up at the same time. Your evening skin ritual of cleansing, toning and revitalising supports your evening routine in readiness for bed.

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 10.18.57 am

3) Technology

The screens of devices such as tablets and smartphones emit short-wavelength light, also known as blue light. All light can suppress the secretion of melatonin – the hormone that controls our day-night cycles – in the evening and night-time, but blue light has a particularly pronounced effect and studies have shown that it’s best avoided at night. One such study has found 2 hours on a device lowers melatonin (brain’s body clock hormone) levels by 22% so…

a) No technology 2 hours before bedtime, ok at least an hour then.

b) Make your bedroom no technology zone – no phone, computer, tablet or television

c) Read a book instead. E-ink readers that aren’t back lit, but illuminated from the front with LED such as Kindle Paperwhite are quite different from the blue light omitted from many other devices.

A recent study found reading reduced stress by a whopping 68%.

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 9.59.22 am

4) Make Lists

Create a list of any jobs that will need to be done the following day. Any thoughts you may have write them down, rather than keep mulling them over in your mind. Use ‘Reminders’ on your phone, then you don’t have to worry about all the things you need to remember.

5) Resolve

Go to bed in a peaceful frame of mind. Resolve any issues before you go to bed.

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 10.19.37 am

6) Alcohol and Caffeine

Both are stimulants so perhaps a small wine with dinner and/or a cup of tea after dinner but that’s it for the evening. Same with sugar, so no late night chocolate. Drink a Chamomile Tea instead.

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 10.54.16 am

7) Bedroom

Bedroom temperature should neither be too hot or too cold, around 18 degrees is optimum. Your bedroom needs to be dark and quiet. Your bed needs to be comfortable.

8) Daily Exercise

Exercise, particularly in fresh air, aids sleep, as does yoga, tai chi, meditation.

9) Beauty Sleep and Your Skin

Your skin eliminates and regenerates during the night time. Dr. Hauschka has a no night cream stance because heavy, occlusive night creams impede natural night time functions of your skin. Botanical extracts embraced in a water based solution support the skin during the night with Apple based Night Serum or Regenerating Serum which is recommended to support a maturing skin.

3 Step Night Care

Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 12.06.17 pm

Did you know that night creams impede your skin’s natural regeneration and elimination activity during the night time?

  • During the night your skin is metabolising and eliminating the day’s waste, that’s one of its many functions as the largest organ in your body.
  • The night time rhythm of the skin is one of a ‘breathing out’.
  • How do you know this is happening? Because skin disorders such as eczema, shingles, chicken pox or measles are much worse during the night. How often have you woken up in the morning to be greeted by a pimple?
  • There are no environmental factors that you need to protect your skin from while you’re asleep.
  • Sleeping isn’t ageing.
  • A night cream – which is usually a heavy, expensive, occlusive substance impedes your skin’s normal night time process.
  • At first our ‘no night cream’ guiding principle seems unusual, however within one month (a skin cell cycle) you’ll need no more convincing!

Jojoba

jojoba-hydrating-cream-mask-topimage-1

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This blog tells you more about Jojoba, where it comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

jojoba-hydrating-cream-mask-why-large

Why is jojoba oil an ingredient in the Dr. Hauschka products?

With roots that are over 6 metres in length, the jojoba shrub is firmly rooted in the desert environment and can therefore provide itself with the only consistently available water, the groundwater. This water evaporates partly via the leaves and thus becomes available again to the surface of the earth. In this way the microclimate is improved. Jojoba shrubs protect the soil in which it is rooted; in this way they protect against soil erosion and assist in retaining moisture again. The jojoba oil provides its protective power to the skin. Particularly dry or cracked skin is smoothed and can retain moisture better; the skin restores its smoothness and suppleness again.

screen-shot-2016-10-12-at-12-53-13-pm

Hydrating Cream Mask

Thanks to its smoothing and moisture-preserving properties, jojoba oil optimally supplements the formulation of Hydrating Cream Mask. This skin care mask protects the skin effectively against dehydration and dryness. The composition consisting of protective rose wax and the soothing and skin-smoothing quince seed extracts activates the moisture-retaining properties of the skin and regulates its oil and moisture processes. Mango butter protects against dehydration, it enriches and envelopes the skin along with precious plant oils from almond, avocado and jojoba. For dry, sensitive or mature skin, stressed by environmental influences and in dire need of regeneration, Hydrating Cream Mask provides supplementing and intensive skin care. The skin feels soft again and radiates freshness and smoothness.

Raw material profile

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is a true miracle in dealing with extremes. The evergreen shrub, that can grow as high as 3 metres, in the deserts of Mexico, California and Arizona where night temperatures are between 0 and 5°C and daytime temperatures can be as high as 45°C. In spite of its extreme location, the jojoba shrub can reach an age of up to 200 years. It can survive there, because of its taproot that can grow down to a depth of 6 metres enabling it to draw water from the soils’s deepest layers. The narrow leaves are adjusted to survive optimally in desert dryness due to its leathery and hairy surface. The scrubby-looking bushes are dioecious. In other words, there are male shrubs that produce pollen and female shrubs with inconspicuous blossoms. Brown capsule fruits, reminiscent of acorns, develop after wind pollination. Each fruit contains mostly one Jojoba seed, which is about as big as a small olive.

jojoba-hydrating-cream-mask-profile-large-nut

Jojoba seeds contain 50-60% wax, which is liquid at room temperature. It is therefore known as an oil. The oil containing provitamin A and vitamin E is extremely resistant to oxidation. This explains its longevity.

jojoba-hydrating-cream-mask-slider-01

The Spaniards named Jojoba from the word ‘ho-ho-ba’ from the language of the Native Americans. This tribal group was located in the Sonora desert of southwestern Arizona USA and northwestern Mexico.

jojoba-hydrating-cream-mask-slider-02

Jojoba oil extracted from the seeds had been utilised for wide-ranging purposes by various Native American tribes. They used the oil to treat pain and gastric illnesses. Jojoba oil played a major role in skin and hair care.

jojoba-hydrating-cream-mask-slider-03

Jojoba shrubs protect desert regions against erosion and facilitate a favourable, ground-level microclimate.

jojoba-hydrating-cream-mask-slider-04

Thanks to its special, waxy structure, jojoba oil is resistant to oxidisation, which means that it takes significantly longer than other oils before it gets rancid. It can withstand temperatures of up to 300 degrees Celsius.

jojoba-hydrating-cream-mask-origin-large
Origin, cultivation and manufacture

We obtain jojoba for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care from a certified Demeter farm in Argentina. The company founder is Jorge Arizu and his cultivated fields are located at the foot of the Andes in an extremely dry area. Even the jojoba shrub, which is adapted to a dry environment, requires drip irrigation here. The water originates from a fountain on the farm. The jojoba shrubs stand in rows like long hedges where they are cultivated in compliance with biodynamic maintenance. When the jojoba shrubs are young, the limited water supply allows for the planting of aromatic herbs such as cumin, black cumin and chamomile between the rows. By the end of summer, the jojoba fruits are ripe and harvest time is until the end of autumn. The washed jojoba seeds are dried in the sun and then transported by truck to the own oil mill in Uruguay. It operates with special presses, filters and piping systems to rule out any contamination of the jojoba oil. From there, the cold-pressed jojoba oil is transported to Dr. Hauschka.

Jorge Arizu discovered jojoba for cultivation purposes through the inspiration by a Greek professor at the University of California. Dr. Demetrios Yermanos (1921-1984) is regarded as pioneer of the jojoba research. The agricultural scientist discovered jojoba oil as a substitute for spermaceti, which was an important ingredient of cosmetic recipes until the 1970s. Jorge Arizu received seeds of further cultivated jojoba plants from Demetrios Yermanos with which he started his jojoba culture in the Arauco desert in the north-west of Argentina in 1982. In 2007 he took over a conventional farm and converted it to biodynamic cultivation. As member of the AABDA (Argentinean Bio-Dynamic Association), Jorge Arizu is strongly committed to cultivation in the desert. Overgrazing changed many steppes in Argentina into deserts. People had to migrate to the cities. Jorge Arizu has a vision: the desert areas of his home country must be injected with new life through biodynamic jojoba cultivation. The jojoba culture allows the water level to rise again, promoting more biodiversity and enabling people to settle down in this area again.
