Pantone Fashion Colour Report Spring 2014

Designers take a modern twist on the traditional for spring 2014 by pairing soft pastels with vivid brights to create a colourful equilibrium. Inspired by a mixture of blooming flowers, travels abroad and strong, confident women, designers use colour to refresh, revive and defy conventional wisdom.

“This season, consumers are looking for a state of thoughtful, emotional and artistic equilibrium,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute®. “While this need for stability is reflected in the composition of the palette, the inherent versatility of the individual colours allows for experimentation with new looks and colour combinations.”

Pantone Spring Colors

Three very adaptable pastels sit on one end of the palette, and, because we are so accustomed to seeing them as nature’s background, they can be creatively combined with any other colour in the spectrum. Placid Blue, like a picture-perfect, tranquil and reassuring sky, induces a sense of peaceful calmness, while Violet Tulip, a romantic, vintage purple, evokes wistful nostalgia. Similar to the verdant shade of springtime foliage, Hemlock, a summery, ornamental green, provides a decorative touch that’s very different from the greens of recent seasons. Pair any of these versatile pastels with a bolder hue for an au courant look.

Sand, a lightly toasted and amiable neutral, conjures images of the beach and the carefree days of summer. Try pairing Sand with Hemlock for perfect, natural balance. Paloma serves as a quintessential neutral, interesting enough to be worn alone or combined with any colour for sophisticated poise.

Cayenne, a high-pitched red, adds a dash of spicy heat to neutrals, and heightens the excitement when mixed with Freesia, a blazing yellow that is sure to illuminate wardrobes this season. A tropical, floral-inspired shade, Freesia’s warmth and energy help set the stage for Celosia Orange, an optimistic, spontaneous hue. Pair Celosia Orange with Violet Tulip for a captivating vision, much like the setting summer sun.

The palette is brought full circle with Radiant Orchid, a bold counterpart to Violet Tulip, and Dazzling Blue, a scintillating, polar opposite to Placid Blue. Surprisingly, these strong, vibrant colors also pair well across the palette: They are perfect companions to pastels, and add confidence and vivacity when mixed with other bold colours.

For more than 20 years, Pantone, the global authority on colour, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season’s most important colour trends. This report previews the most prominent hues for spring 2014.

Make-up tips for a sun-kissed look

Our international Dr. Hauschka make-up artist, Karim Sattar, loves using Bronzing Powder to highlight the contours of the face and subtly emphasise areas such as the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. Here are his make-up tips for creating a beautiful, sun kissed look.

Every Day Glow 3 Minute Make-up

Complexion

Dip a brush in the Bronzing Powder and then tap it lightly on the back of your hand. Highlight the areas of your face that best catch the sun by dusting the powder onto your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. Gently sweep the colour outwards using circular motions.

Eyes

Apply Eyeshadow 01 Golden Sand to your entire upper eyelid, gently blending it towards your eyebrows. Next, apply Eyeshadow 02 Golden Earth to just your eyelid crease to give your eyes some extra depth. Volume Mascara Black makes your eyes look wider for added sparkle. Only apply it to your upper lashes.

Lips

Apply Lipstick Novum 09 Miraculous Rose to your lips to perfectly complete this fresh daytime look. You’re ready to go.

Subtle Night Glow Make-up

Complexion

Prime your face with Translucent Make-up and apply Concealer to your lower and upper eye areas to hide any blemishes. Next, use a powder brush to evenly apply a mixture of Bronzing Powder and Translucent Face Powder compact , working downwards from your forehead.

Eyes

Apply Eyeshadow 09 Ivory to your entire upper eyelid, gently blending it towards your eyebrows. Next, apply Eyeshadow 04 Taupe to your eyelid crease, taking the colour to the upper edge of your eyelid at the corner of your eye. Now apply Black Liquid Eyeliner to your upper lashes, running it in a straight line to the corners of your eyes. Apply two coats of Volume Mascara Black , not forgetting your lower lashes in the evening.

Cheeks

Apply Rouge Powder 03 Rosé to your cheek bones and accentuate your lower cheek area with Bronzing Powder.

Lips

Apply a small amount of Lipstick 07 Transparent Rosé before pressing your lips together and filling in any remaining areas. Dab a little Lip Gloss 01 Rose onto the middle of your lips.

International Make-up Artist Visit

Our Star – Karim Sattar
Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist

What a privilege it’s been to host our guest Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist. Karim is charismatic and charming, a fun and entertaining presenter who genuinely loves women, sees our individual beauty and he’s so incredibly knowledgeable!

Karim’s approach is very much to focus on highlighting what you love about your features, rather than concealing what you don’t. Karim trained as a Make-up Artist more than 16 years ago. He grew up on his parent’s organic farm and the aromas and medicinal plant garden at Dr. Hauschka natural and organic skin care and make-up felt like a home coming for Karim.

Although based in Hamburg, Karim spends much of his time travelling. Just prior to Karim’s first visit down under he was in the Netherlands presenting at an Eco Event and in Austria for a natural make-up magazine shoot.  With a weekend arrival we took Karim on a Sydney sight seeing venture, including a shopping visit at The Rocks and a walkabout at Shark Bay.

Screen Shot 2014-09-02 at 12.13.03 pm

During the week Karim worked his magic at many Make-up Masterclass Group Events and Make Me Over Individual Events in Sydney at the Dr. Hauschka Discovery Centre and in Melbourne at Glo Health. It really was brilliant to see the transformations as well as learning so many new make-up tips, tricks and techniques. Karim, we’re all doing our make-up differently, we love your work and please come back our away again in the not too far distant future… xxx
