Key Ingredients

Pomegranate Fruit Extract
Pomegranate fruit helps the skin to regenerate as well as having antioxidant properties. They also store a huge amount of moisture and vitality. The Pomegranate extract used in Dr. Hauschka Foundation is obtained by processing the entire fruit, including its skin.

Pomegranates not only taste good, they have a range of health benefits. Anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties have been ascribed to them. They’re also resistant to drought and can store much moisture and vitality in their fruit.

An age-defying ingredient

  • We process the whole Pomegranate fruit, including the Peel for our products, obtaining a preparation that promotes regeneration of the skin.
  • Pomegranate Peel is an important ingredient because its extract inhibits an enzyme that is responsible for the breakdown of collagen in ageing skin.
  • At the same time, the extract activates an enzyme that’s involved in the production of collagen.
  • Pomegranate Seed Oil contained in the whole-fruit extract stimulates cell division in the keratinocytes, cells which produce the important skin-strengthening protein keratin.

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is slow in penetrating the skin’s layers, it leaves the skin feeling soft and silky smooth all day. The coconut oil in Dr. Hauschka Foundation comes from a small farming project in Sri Lanka, which is certified by both Naturland and Fair For Life. This gives the formulation a stable, moisturising base.

Macadamia Nut Oil
Macadamia nuts take a very long time to ripen and are only ready when they fall from the tree of their own accord. Macadamia nut oil is absorbed easily by the skin and is unique among oils owing to the high amount of antioxidant palmitoleic acid that it contains.

The composition also includes nourishing Jojoba and Apricot Kernel Oil, Anthyllis which is a key ingredient to bring all skin conditions to a state of balance, protective Shea Butter and Candelilla Wax, provitamin A rich Carrot Root Extract and Silica to strengthen skin.

Tips from Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist

  • To find the right shade of Dr. Hauschka Foundation for you, apply three different shades on your cheekbones and choose the colour which blends best with your face and neck.
  • You should apply Foundation in small amounts starting with the forehead and then moving on to the nose, chin and cheeks – always work downwards to avoid emphasising pores and fine hairs.
  • Blend the transition between the neck, ears and hairline so that no edges are visible.
  • Because your skin will begin absorbing Foundation immediately, we recommend applying product from the top of the lid, rather than the back of your hand.
  • You can apply a second coat of Foundation for more coverage.
  • A moist sponge may be used for a lighter coverage, alternatively to achieve a more translucent make-up, mix Foundation with your Dr. Hauschka Moisturiser.
  • Applying and patting in the Foundation with a foundation brush helps to conceal redness and imperfections more effectively.

A nurturing base for an even complexion

For the Foundation to go on evenly, your skin should first be cleansed and moisturised. Otherwise, large amounts of Foundation will become concentrated on dry spots, creating an uneven result. Perhaps your lips, neck and the area under your eyes could use a little cream? This creates the optimum base for and even and long-lasting make-up.

Application and fixing

For seamless application, apply a little Foundation from your forehead down to your nose, as well as to your chin and cheeks. Always work downwards so as not to emphasise pores or tiny hairs. Next, spread the Foundation outwards to the sides of your face, blending in the areas of transition with your neck, ears and hair line.

Concealer before or after?

After! For greater coverage in specific areas or to conceal shadows on the inner corner of the eyes, add a little Concealer. But don’t cover up too much – leave the moles or freckles that are part of your beauty.

Why use Powder?

Powder helps to fix the liquid Foundation and enhances the staying power of your make-up. Use a Powder Brush to work a little loose power into your skin using downwards strokes. To create a more matte effect, you can press the powder onto your skin using a powder puff, gently rolling it back and forth. Powder Compact is a practical choice if you like to refresh your make-up while out and about.

Fingers, sponge or brush?

At hand temperature, Foundation spreads easily and harmoniously blends with your complexion. Please moisturise your hands well before use. This allows you to apply the Foundation evenly.

Easily, with a sponge

Application with a slightly damp sponge for speed of application.

Carefully, with a brush

When using a Foundation Brush, you can apply the Foundation to specific areas, increasing its ability to conceal blemishes.

Air brushed finish

Foundation Brush is great for giving an ‘air brushed’ finish, and for blending colour at jawline.

For a little extra glow

For a hint of summer sun-kissed freshness, mix a small amount of Translucent Bronzing Tint with your Foundation.

Mix shades

Different tones open up interesting opportunities: the shades can be combined in any way you like to create your very own, personal Foundation or adapt your usual shade to the time of year. A darker shade helps to emphasise your cheek area.

For a bit of quick refreshment

If you applied your Foundation a few hours ago, you can give your face a little extra hydration later in the day, Mist a small amount of Facial Toner onto your face.

Too much Powder or Foundation?

Spray a little Toner onto a Powder Brush and gently brush across your face.

For a long-lasting result, high colour correcting result

For longer-lasting results and a flawless complexion, apply a little Colour Correcting Powder to your face first, to colour correct and as a matte base for Foundation. Apply a little over the Foundation as well, to set your make-up.

Roses in Rose Day Cream Light

It’s fascinating to see what the rose, a master of balance, can do for your skin,” explains pharmacist Annette Greco, Head of Product Development at Dr. Hauschka. “The rose is vibrantly young in character, but also durable; defensive yet open to its environment; thorny yet velvety. Its ability to embody these contrasting characteristics and combine them into one perfect aesthetic is proof of its harmonising potential for skin care and make-up. It’s for this reason that almost all Dr. Hauschka products contain rose in some form.”

Harmonising facial care

This includes the Rose Day Cream Light. The harmonising face cream softly envelopes the skin and imparts all the beneficial properties of rose. Contained within this smooth and light protective cream is the rose in all her forms: rose water, rose petal extract, rose hip extract, Damask rose essential oil and precious rose wax.

Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream Light

  • For sensitive, delicate skin
  • Strengthens and stabilises skin that is prone to redness
  • Harmonises and regulates moisture
  • Promotes the skin’s natural processes
  • The light texture absorbs quickly and provides the ideal base for make-up

Beautifully versatile: the roses in Dr. Hauschka products

“It’s not enough to simply say: this product contains rose – it’s also important to mention how,” explains Annette Greco, Head of Product Development at Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. “Sometimes we use essential rose oil, sometimes rose hip extract, other times rose water or rose petal extract.”

A fair partnership: organic essential rose oil

Dr. Hauschka also places great importance on sourcing its roses. To obtain our precious organic essential rose oil, for example, we work with partners all over the world – including in Ethiopia and Afghanistan. Dr. Hauschka has been supporting and advising a World Hunger Aid project in Afghanistan for several years. The cultivation of organic roses provides locals with an alternative to growing opium poppies, which are used to produce opiates such as heroin. Projects like these help people to secure their livelihoods and improve their financial and social situations. They also promote organic farming methods.

Three-fold Nature of Human Beings, Plants and the Skin

Dr. Hauschka Moisturisers each have their own leading plant, which gives them their distinctive character, as individual as your skin.

The philosophical approach behind Dr. Hauschka Skin Care is Anthroposophy, meaning ‘wisdom of man/woman’.

Philosopher and natural scientist Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s work is not for the faint hearted, however, it’s interesting to have an understanding of how this relates to the development of product formulations and the efficacy of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care preparations. Through close observation of plants in their natural environments Steiner explored the relationship between plants and people. His work revealed the healing qualities of specific plants and showed how each of their three parts is symbiotic with the human body and skin; the body’s largest organ. This concept he named ‘three-fold’.

Three parts to people

According to the three-fold image, the human being is made up of three core systems: the nerve-sense, the rhythmic and the metabolic-limb.

Three parts to plants

Like humans, plants have their own three-fold system. For a plant, however, the system is turned upside down. While in a human the nerve-sense system is found in the head, in a plant, it’s in the roots, the other way around. The metabolic-limb system is at the top of a plant in its flowers, fruits and seeds. At the centre of a plant, the stem and leaves is the rhythmic system.

Three parts to skin

Skin has three layers; the epidermis (top layer), dermis (mid layer) and subcutaneous or hypodermis (3rd and deepest layer). You would have heard of the term ‘third degree burns’, meaning all three layers of the skin.

Making a difference

Real health and beauty come from the inside and the outside. In its natural state, the skin is healthy and balanced. However skin condition can easily be compromised when other factors come into play; such as internal and external environmental issues, lifestyle, hormonal issues, transitions or stress. Peace of mind is beneficial for the skin as is adequate sleep, nutritious food, fresh air and exercise.

Negative effects on the skin may result in acne/ blemishes, inflammation, dry and/or dehydrated skin, premature wrinkles or simply a complexion that lacks health and radiance. At this point the natural world helps to heal. How this relates to Dr. Hauschka Skin Care is understanding the remarkable similarities between plants and the skin, so we are able to select ingredients that support particular skin functions.

Rosemary

We can take Rosemary as an example of how we look at a medicinal plant ingredient. Rosemary has few flowers, and an abundance of leaves. The leaves are the plant’s rhythmic system. We look at the effect Rosemary has on our rhythmic system: enhancing circulation, warming and invigorating.

Screen Shot 2014-05-20 at 10.01.50 am

Dr.Hauschka Skin Care preparations contain elements of plant root, leaf and flower, so all three layers of skin are addressed.

Our preparations are developed by Anthroposophically Trained Doctors and Pharmacists in conjunction with our highly qualified Dr. Hauschka trained Estheticians. Our formulations are complex and they comprise of many elements, never one or two.

‘One violin doesn’t make an orchestra.’

Every ingredient that goes into a Dr. Hauschka Skin Care product has an important job to do for your skin. Whether delivering essential moisture, encouraging resilience, nourishment, protection from the environment, improving efficacy or something for the senses as well as your skin in the form of essential oils. Each element is thoughtfully selected for its particular effects and its interaction with the other ingredients in the formula.

Rose Cultivation Partnership Projects

Damask Rose (Rosa damascena)

In creating the formulations for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, we draw on the many things that nature has to offer. For example, medicinal plants, botanical oils and waxes and genuine essential oils. Working with renewable natural raw materials has many logistical challenges, therefore long term planning is imperative for us. Many of the medicinal herbs we need are grown by our gardeners in our own biodynamic garden or in the fields on our Demeter certified farm, Sonnenhof. We also purchase other raw materials from regional sources as the climate is not suitable for growing some of the plant species from which we obtain raw materials. WALA*/Dr. Hauschka initiates and supports organic or biodynamic cultivation projects all over the world to ensure premium quality, sufficient quantity, continuity and longevity of ingredient supplies, and we embrace social responsibility and fair price principles. A prime example of this is Rose Essential Oil partnerships in Bulgaria, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and our most recently launched Rose Project in the Ethiopian Highlands.

Did you know?

• There are 30 organic or biodynamic roses in every tube of Rose Day Cream.

• We sell tubes of Rose Day Cream per minute worldwide!

• We purchase the highest quantity of the world’s highest grade organic rose essential oil. It comes from our biodynamic or organic cultivation partnership projects in Ethiopia, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria and Afghanistan.

• Approximately one hectare of roses is needed to obtain 1 kg of precious Rose Essential Oil, which is used in nearly all Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Make-up products and in many WALA medicines.

Harvesting roses in Ethiopia; Rosenernte Äthiopien
Rose Project – Ethiopian Highlands

Ethiopia

When it comes to sources of Rose Essential Oil, countries such as Turkey, Bulgaria, Iran and Afghanistan come to mind – but Ethiopia? As it turns out, the Ethiopian highlands, which are well known for their coffee, provide the ideal conditions for growing the very fragrant Damask Rose, and it yields an exceptionally precious essential oil.

WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care support the Terra PLC Damask Rose Farm, a fair trade initiative in Ethiopia. We are helping to create a self-reliant and economically sustainable community by establishing a biodynamic resource for Damask Rose Essential Oil, a key ingredient in the Dr. Hauschka range.

In 2005 WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care provided Ethiopian grower, Fekade Lakew, with rose cuttings and introduced him to a consultant to train and advise on biodynamic cultivation methods. It took 7 years before the first harvest of rose blossoms. At that time, in 2012, Lakew also initiated the biodynamic certification process. Once certified, his farm was the sole certified biodynamic source of rose essential oil in Africa.

A key benefit of growing roses near the equator is that the lifespan of the bloom increases substantially, giving farmers twice the time to harvest, and requiring fewer pickers who can often be employed beyond the typical picking season. Ethiopian roses in particular are nearly twice as heavy as blossoms from other countries resulting in a greater yield from fewer plants.

WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care committed to purchasing all of the rose essential oil produced at Fekade Lakew’s farm for a period of ten years, and 60-70% thereafter. This ensures that the initiative has ample time to establish itself without becoming dependent upon a single customer for all its revenue in the long term.

Damask Rose Essential Oil from Ethiopia is used in the formulations of nearly all Dr. Hauschka products, including Rose Day Cream, Rose Day Cream Light, Rose Nurturing Body Wash, Rose Deodorant, Rose Nurturing Body Oil, Rose Nurturing Body Moisturiser, and many of our make-up products. When a Dr. Hauschka customer purchases products featuring this hero ingredient, she/he helps support the growth of this fair trade effort in Ethiopia and Dr. Hauschka’s other rose cultivation projects around the globe.

Rose Project – Iran

Iran

The cultivation of roses in ‘Persia’ is an ancient tradition. There are 1500 growers who work as independent operators for Zahra Rosewater Company, our partner in Iran. Through biodynamic practices over the last few decades the annual production yield is now 900 tonnes of rose water (rose hydrosol) and 150 kgs of rose essential oil. WALA/Dr. Hauschka purchase more than one third of all the rose oil and dried rose blossoms that Zahra produces. The Iranian government subsidises chemical fertilisers, so initially it was extremely difficult to convince the farmers to refrain from using them, and to embrace biodynamic agriculture. Education and training were and still are important pillars of the collaboration with these growers.

Anyone working with Zahra is family and as part of this family-oriented collaboration, older people no longer able to work receive a kind of pension, Zahra has improved the water supply to the villages and supports the schools. A local health centre set up by Zahra guarantees primary health care. Zahra makes it possible for gifted children to attend a special school. The hope is that they will return to their villages with a good education and work there. The idea is working, Lalehzar has the lowest unemployment rate in the region. Zahra also donates part of its profits to the orphanages of the Sanati Foundation.

Rose Project – Bulgaria

Bulgaria

Rose oil has been produced for the French perfume industry since the end of the 19th century. These days, however, the perfume industry uses mainly synthetic chemical ‘perfume’ as a much cheaper option. WALA/Dr. Hauschka  instigated long term supply contracts with Bulgarian rose growers and the provision of loans to support our new partners. Organic Certification was gained in 2003.

rose flowers, Ethiopia; Rosenblüten, Äthiopien
Rose Project – Turkey

Turkey

Some 320 mountain farmers in the Baskoop Rose Co-operative have adapted their methods of cultivation to supply certified organic roses. WALA is significantly contributing to securing the livelihoods of the local farming families and to the survival of the traditional and labour intensive rose distilling industry. WALA also bears all costs for agricultural, technical and organic consultations and some of the costs of certification.

Auf dem Rosenfeld
Rose Project – Afghanistan

Afghanistan

Did you know that 80% of the world’s heroin comes from Afghanistan? In order to combat the opium trade in Afghanistan and on the initiative of German Agro Action a project was set up for producing rose oil in 2004.  This project offers an alternative means of securing a sustainable and honourable livelihood for local farmers. WALA/Dr. Hauschka expressed an interest in the project in 2006 and has been supporting it ever since. Today over 700 farmers are growing organic Damask roses on more than 100 hectares of land. A large volume of organic rose oil is produced, most of which is sold to WALA/Dr. Hauschka.  This ancient Afghan tradition has been brought back to life with this budding partnership.

Our Rose Essential Oil is derived from Rosa damascena, named so from Damascus in Syria, also known as the Damask Rose.  This most fragrant of roses produces the highest quality Rose Essential Oil, also known as Rose Otto, or Attar of Roses.

Summer Solutions for Feet and Legs

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Put the spring back in your step

Your feet bear your body weight while your toes balance your body in an act of the utmost precision. It is no wonder that they make themselves felt now and again. If we spend a lot of time on our feet, our feet and legs become tired and may also swell. If this is aggravated by incorrectly fitting shoes we may also suffer from blisters, pressure points, calluses or aching legs. Hot weather also puts a strain on our feet and legs. It’s really important to pamper your feet and legs with supportive skin care, something much more than just moisturising.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Hydrating Foot Cream for dry feet and Revitalising Leg & Arm Tonic revive tired feet and legs and help work to prevent swelling. With real Silk Powder, Deodorising Foot Cream helps control excess perspiration keeping feet dry, comfortable and fresh through the day. Rosemary and Sage combine to revitalise, you’ll be walking on clouds. Silk Body Powder leaves feet feeling truly refreshed. Both products have a deodorising effect and minimise foot odour.

Tip: Sprinkle a little Silk Body Powder in your shoes to keep them smelling fresh.

Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence and Sage Purifying Bath Essence are both ideal foot baths. Amazing what a 10 minute foot bath with a refreshing Bath Essence will do.

Revitalising Leg & Arm Tonic invigorates, energises and tones the skin. It soothes and minimises water-retention (swelling) and tired legs arms and legs regain a sense of lightness. Rosemary essential oil energises and supports circulation. Borage helps reduce the appearance of varicose veins and cellulite. After a long day of sitting or standing, Revitalising Leg & Arm Tonic refreshes and energises limbs for continued activity.

Tips:

For dry skin, blend Revitalising Leg & Arm Tonic with your favourite Dr. Hauschka Body Oil, Body Milk or Body Cream.

Use Revitalising Leg & Arm Tonic as a 3pm pick-me-up, works a treat! Decant some into an old Toner bottle and keep in your desk drawer.

Lastly, for toenail care, use Neem Nail & Cuticle Pen or Neem Nail & Cuticle Oil 30ml.

Happy Customer

“I spend my days either walking around in heels or in bare feet and as a result my feet are either sore and tired or dry and cracked. I’m not kind to my feet, which is probably why I love the Hydrating Foot Cream. I put it on at night and not only do my feet feel cool and soothed by the next morning the cracks are gone and they’re lovely and soft. I gave this product to my Dad who had horrible cracks in his feet that really hurt. After five days he called and asked what on earth was in the Hydrating Foot Cream as the cracks had almost gone and his feet felt better than they had in ages. We both still use it and it is one of the products I recommend to everyone.”

Beat the Heat Make-up Tips

Always cleanse, tone and moisturise before applying makeup. You may wish to use a matte moisturiser such as Rose Day Cream Light or if you have a combination oily T-zone skin then use Melissa Day Cream. If you have a dry/dehydrated skin that needs a moisturiser that’s activating yet very light in texture for summer time, then use Revitalising Day Cream. Leave your moisturiser to absorb fully prior to make-up application.

For a long-lasting make-up in hot weather our International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar, recommends this technique…

1) Apply Colour Correcting Powder, Loose Powder or Compact Powder first.

Our Powders and Foundation blend together beautifully. Dr. Hauschka 100% natural make-up is free from silicones, so you won’t get a patchy look.

2) You now have a matte base to apply your Foundation.

3) Apply Colour Correcting Powder, Loose Powder or Compact Powder again to set make-up.

4) Apply Blush and/or Bronzer.

5) Mist your make-up with Toner.

Multi-tasking product TIP
At the moment I’m loving Blush Duo 03 sun-kissed nectarine for both cheeks and eyes.

HOT TIPS for a long-lasting eye liner and brows

1) Moisten an angled brush with Toner.

2) Pick up colour with your brush from just the one corner of the darkest shade of your Eyeshadow Palette or Trio.

3) With your brush apply a line to the lower lash line from outer to inner, starting a little further out than the outer edge of your eye.

4) You’ll need to pick up more colour with your brush, then apply to the upper lash line from the outer to the inner and beginning from the extended colour from your lower lash line so the two meet.

5) Define your brows with the residual colour left on the brush and set with Brow & Lash Gel.

If you prefer a more defined upper lash line that will also stay the distance.

Apply Eyeshadow for a matte start, then Eye Definer Pencil and set with Eyeshadow over the top. Alternatively use Liquid Eyeliner.

Long-lasting lipstick

1) Apply Blush to your lips first, which provides a matte base.

2) Use Lip Liner over the entire lip area rather than an outline.

3) Apply your favourite Lipstick, ‘kiss’ a tissue to remove excess, and re-apply.

Helps keep your skin looking clear and your eyes bright, add some organic apple cider vinegar as well. Aids hydration and digestion and helps flush toxins from the body.

Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water or herbal teas daily to keep your skin plump and hydrated.

2) Compress and Hydrate

Compress and hydrate your skin prior to cleansing with Organic Cotton Compress. This softens pores enabling a much deeper cleanse, and you’ll use your Cleansing Cream and Soothing Cleansing Milk more economically as well on hydrated skin.

Remember to complete your cleanse with 2-3 cold water splashes or a cold compress. This simple technique activates a tiny muscle beside the hair follicle ensuring any remaining dirt is washed away and your skin will reward you by feeling silky soft without harsh exfoliation.

It really is worth that extra 2 minutes, try it out for a month (skin cell cycle) and see how your skin feels and looks.

How to Compress & Hydrate video.

3) Get a good night’s sleep.

It really is beauty sleep. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time each day to support your body’s rhythms.

Use botanical actives in an oil-free formulation for your night care. Night Serum benefits all skin conditions, wake up to refreshed skin or Regenerating Serum in support of a maturing skin.

No night cream, which impedes your skin’s natural elimination and regeneration phase.

4) Incorporate relaxation and self care into your life.

Make little changes, dance or do yoga in your living room instead of watching TV. Lose yourself in a good book, a recent study found reading reduced stress by a whopping 68% and listening to music 61%.

Have a regular Dr. Hauschka Facial Treatment with a Dr. Hauschka trained Esthetician. Time seems to stand still while you immerse yourself in this ‘so much more than a facial’ treatment. Your skin looks radiant, you’re feeling calm, deeply relaxed with a sense of lightness and inner balance.

5) Go for a walk

Walk, jog or cycle every morning for 30 minutes. If you have a friend that could join in, all the better, you’ll encourage each other.

Benefits: fresh morning air, movement supports your lymph system therefore your immune system, uplifts your mood, clears your mind, increases blood circulation and oxygenation, strengthens bones and muscles, increases metabolism, increases energy levels…

6) Mask treatments

into your skin care regime to really make a difference.

Clarifying Steam Bath and Cleansing Clay Mask – Once a week deep cleanse and gentle exfoliation, follow with a Cream Mask. Then on another evening during the week, after cleansing and toning, apply Cream Mask.

Cream Masks
Revitalising Mask – our top selling mask that benefits all skin conditions, refines pores and skin looks even toned, rejuvenating, soothing and cooling for sensitivities, our ‘go-to’ mask the night before a special event and also highly recommended for post holiday sun-stressed skin.
Hydrating Mask – For soft, plumped skin treating any dryness or dehydration.
Soothing Mask – Strengthens a sensitive, red, irritated, stressed skin, also recommended for rosacea to use as a day cream as well as a mask.
Firming Mask – a warming mask using all forms of the rose, to firm and tone, to support a maturing skin.

7) Invest in a quality set of brushes

A must-have for professional application. A beautifully blended eyeshadow look comes from quality brushes and Foundation takes on an air brushed look with Foundation Brush blending application.

Look after your brushes and wash them weekly with an eco friendly gentle hand wash liquid. Always dry your brushes laying flat, preferably in sunlight, you don’t want any moisture or soap getting into the head of the brush as it will compromise the glue.

Almond

Almond Oil key ingredient (1) 2016

Our ingredients

Each and every one of the ingredients in our products contributes to their overall effect. Careful thought goes into the selection and sourcing of the raw materials as well as the way in which the individual ingredients are combined to form complete Dr. Hauschka products. We also adhere to the highest quality standards.

This tells you more about the individual ingredient, Almond. Where Almond comes from, why we use it and what functions it performs in our products.

Tinted Day Cream

Almond oil supplements the rich Tinted Day Cream formulation and additional raw materials round off the overall composition. With valuable avocado and almond oils, protective rose wax and quince seeds, Tinted Day Cream sustainably prevents skin dryness.

Dr. Hauschka Skin Care; Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik

Why is almond oil used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

The almond oil pressed from the seeds is a mild and highly lipogenous skin care oil. It is well absorbed by the skin, leaving it silky soft and smooth. The vitamin-rich almond oil is also extremely well tolerated by the skin. As the almond oil regulates moisture levels, it can be used for both dry and oily skin. It even optimally nourishes sensitive skin. Almond oil enhances the skin’s elasticity for toned, radiant results.

Almond-Profile-large

Plant profile

All sorts of things come to mind when we think of almonds; marzipan and macaroons, for example. Or maybe snacks of nuts and raisins or breakfast mueslis. But whatever the context, what we picture in our mind’s eye is the edible almond kernel. But what about the plant that goes with it? The up to 8-metre high, frost-sensitive almond tree with its grey bark belongs to the rose family and is also closely related to the cherry, peach and apricot. We can see this relationship when we look at the pink flowers with yellow stamens. The almond kernel we eat is actually the almond seed which is inside the hard shell or pit. The robust pit is enclosed in the dry, green, bitter and inedible fruit.

Almond Oil key ingredient (2) 2016

Origin, cultivation and processing

The almond tree comes from subtropical China and Asia Minor and is a member of the Rosaceae (rose) family. It was natively found in Central and Western Asia but is today mainly grown in the Mediterranean and California.

Almond-Profile-nut

We use organically certified almonds from Alicante and Albacete in Spain. We also predominantly acquire almonds cultivated using Demeter farming. These are only of the best, edible quality and ready for the oil to be carefully pressed out of them at body temperature for use in our products. Every year, almost 46 tonnes of almonds are processed for our products.

A traditional, artisanal oil mill in the Black Forest carefully presses the almonds at body temperature.

Almond-TopImage
Almonds already grew naturally in the Stone Age and their cultivation is thought to go back to the Bronze Age.

Almond-Slider-04
The almond is probably the oldest cultivated fruit of the the Old World, with a success story that continues right up to the present day.

Almond-Slider-03
In Mediterranean countries, the almond tree is seen as a symbol of vigilance and rebirth because it blossoms early.

In 2014/2015 over 1 million tonnes of almonds were produced globally.

prunus-dulcis-mill

Almond Tree
Synonyms: Sweet Almond
Scientific Name: Prunus dulcis (Mill.)
Family: Rosaceae (Rose Family)

Constituents: 54% fatty oil containing oleic acid, linoleic acid and palmitic acid, protein, enzymes.

Mild almond oil has a good slip and glide and is taken up slowly by the skin. The oil is the conditioning base of Dr.Hauschka After Sun, Concealer, Daily Hydrating Eye Cream, Quince Day Cream, Revitalising Day Cream, Cleansing Cream, Clarifying Day Oil, Hydrating Hand Cream, Lip Care Stick, Lipsticks, Soothing Cleansing Milk, Rose Nurturing Body Cream, Almond Soothing Body Cream, Rose Day Cream Light, Regenerating Day Cream, Regenerating Neck and Décolleté Cream, Regenerating Body Cream, Firming Mask, Tinted Day Cream and Almond St. John’s Wort Soothing Body Oil. In Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream almond meal binds particularly well to dirt particles and thus gently cleanses the skin.

Almond Soothing Body Wash, Almond Soothing Body Cream, Almond Soothing Bath Essence, Almond St. John’s Wort Soothing Body Oil and iconic Cleansing Cream are some of the examples of products which include almond oil.

Being Sun Smart

Should I use a moisturiser and SPF in the one product, or a moisturiser first and then apply a dedicated SPF?

Our concern with moisturisers that include SPF is that they’re usually applied first thing in the morning, with no reapplication, giving a false sense of security. By lunchtime protection ability will be dubious. SPF protection is all about reapplication.

Many moisturisers that include SPF are not Broad Spectrum either, offering UVB protection but not UVA .

We recommend applying a high quality SPF Mineral Make-up Powder, reapplication is easy, over Moisturiser and Foundation. As SPF Mineral Make-up Powders can look a little dry, mist Facial Toner/Clarifying Toner or Rose Water to give it a more natural, dewy finish.

Alternatively for face and/or body use an entirely physical block (zinc and/or titanium dioxide) SPF Sunscreen over your usual Dr. Hauschka Moisturiser or Body Moisturiser and remember to reapply.  A true physical block doesn’t require absorption, it will protect your skin the moment it’s applied.

Sunscreens

Look For
• Active ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, a physical barrier that reflects UV light rather than a chemical barrier that requires absorption.
• Antioxdants – vitamins A, C and E.
• SPF 15 to 50 depending on your skin tone and sun intensity.
• Broad Spectrum UVA and UVB protection. SPF rating is on UVB.
• Use lotions, NOT sprays, due to likely inhalation.
• Water-resistant for the beach or pool.

Avoid
• Retinyl palmitatem, synthetic vitamin A, due to phototoxicity.
• Oxybenzone, benzophenone, octocrylene, or octyl methoxycinnamate which may be potentially carcinogenic.
• Synthetic chemical preservatives such as parabens and methylisothiazolinone (MIT).
• Very High SPF which may contribute to a false sense of security and offers little additional benefit, see below SPF chart.
• Silicones and petrolatum which are occlusive and block pores.
• Synthetic chemical fragrance.

Sunbathing Dos and Don’ts

• Apply sunscreen before sun exposure.
• Apply generously. Low application amounts reduce protection. About six teaspoonfuls of sunscreen for the whole body is recommended by the EU as the correct amount for an adult.
• Allow sunscreen to be absorbed before putting on clothes, this will help avoid staining.
• Reapply sunscreen frequently to maintain protection, especially after perspiring or swimming, towels and sand can also rub off sunscreen and reduce its protective qualities.
• No sunscreen product gives 100% protection against UV rays. Over-exposure to the sun is a serious health threat.
• Remember to avoid sun between 10am and 4pm.
• Do not take the SPF to its limit, remember your reapplication times.
• Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight. Up to the age of seven, children are particularly sensitive to the sun while their skin gradually develops thicker, protective skin cells, additional use of protective clothing is therefore very important.

What about Vitamin D?

We need sunlight for Vitamin D, around 20 minutes per day, and not between 10am to 4pm.

UVA & UVB

The sunlight that reaches us is made up of two types of harmful rays: long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) and short wave ultraviolet B (UVB). Basically, UVA rays are ageing and UVB rays burn. Overexposure to either can damage the skin. There’s also UVC – these are the shortest and strongest, but they’re absorbed by the ozone layer and don’t typically reach the Earth.

UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the skin’s thickest layer. Unprotected exposure can lead to premature skin ageing and risk of skin cancer.

UVB rays will usually burn the superficial layers of your skin. The intensity of UVB rays vary by season, location and time of day, with 10am to 4pm being the peak hours. Sunburned skin can cause permanent damage.

Screen Shot 2014-11-17 at 5.27.12 pm

What does SPF mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. Sunscreens are classified by an SPF number which refers to their ability to deflect UVB rays.

SPF rating is calculated by comparing the amount of time needed to burn sunscreen-protected skin vs. unprotected skin. So if a person burns after 10 minutes in the sun uses an SPF 2, they have double that time before a sunburn – 20 minutes. Skin protected with SPF 15 would take 15 times longer, or 150 minutes for sunburn to occur.

Keep in mind though, the increase from 20 to 45 level SPF provides only 2.8% more UV protection.

Cover-up

Think cool baggy trousers, maxi skirts and dresses, pretty tops, floppy hats and sunnies.

Hot Weather Beauty Tips

Hot weather, sun, wind, salt, air conditioning and humidity!

1) Dry, flaky skin

Inadequate hydration, dehydrating air conditioning and too much sun are drying to your skin and may result in dry, rough, flaky skin. Drink a minimum of 6-8 glasses of water and/or herbal teas a day to hydrate from within.

Remember you may need to change your Dr. Hauschka Moisturiser for the seasons to ensure optimum care.

Skin Tip: Always apply your body moisturiser to skin that’s still moist from your shower, this helps to lock in moisture. You’ll be applying your face Moisturiser on skin still moist from Toner, however, in warm weather keep a bottle handy to mist Toner during the day as well.

TIP: Keep your Toner in the fridge for a cool spritz

2) Sun-stressed skin

Revitalising Mask is a must for a sun-stressed skin, cooling and soothing, use twice a week. Cleanse early in the evening, apply Revitalising Mask, including the eye contour area, and leave to absorb for as long as possible, removing with a tepid cloth prior to bed time.

After Sun is our summertime and holiday must have body moisturiser for it’s antioxidants, cooling and soothing Ice Plant extract, and long lasting moisture.

3) Cover-up

Think floppy hats, maxi dresses and skirts, pretty tops, floaty palazzo pants and of course always sunnies.

4) Being Sun Smart

5) Fine lines and wrinkles

These occur due to the age-triggered loss of collagen and elastin from skin, but exposure to sun and dry winds, resulting in dry skin, is likely to accelerate the process. Foods and skin care high in antioxidants helps to significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of premature ageing, so ensure you’re getting your Vitamins A, C and E, fruit, vegetables, coffee, tea, wine, and dark chocolate.

Regenerating Range is specifically formulated to support a maturing skin.

6) Dull Skin

For a dull, dry skin use Revitalising Day Cream, our lightest in texture moisturiser, yet also our most activating. Apply Tinted Day Cream over the top to bring back warm tones to the skin and double the moisturising.

If dryness is not an issue, mix a little Translucent Bronzing Tint with any Dr. Hauschka Moisturiser for a sun-kissed healthy glow.

7) Breakouts

Recent email from a customer…

Q: Help! My skin is breaking out with this weather, make-up is disappearing from now oily t-zone by lunchtime. Using Rose Day Cream and in my late 30’s.

A: Rose Day Cream is too rich for you at this time of year. Here’s your recommended daily regime for summer:

MORNING
Cleansing Cream
Clarifying Toner
Melissa Day Cream – specific for mediating between oily and normal (or dry) areas of your face, helps to control shine, and has a matte finish. Another alternative would be Rose Day Cream Light.
Coverstick – a must have product, conceals and treats pimples

You may like to try mixing a little Translucent Bronzing Tint with your Melissa Day Cream as a tinted moisturiser instead of make-up or Foundation and set with Translucent Powder Loose in the morning, and during the day touch-up with Translucent Powder Compact.

EVENING
Soothing Cleansing Milk
Clarifying Toner
Night Serum

We also highly recommend once a week Clarifying Facial Bath and Clarifying Clay Mask and twice a week Revitalising Mask.

8) Sun-Stressed Tresses

Hair can suffer from overexposure to sun, sea, chlorine, heat and warm winds, making it dry and prone to breakage. Limit use of the blow drier, hair straighteners and curling tongs and don’t shampoo every day if you don’t need to. Use Hair Strengthening Treatment as a treatment for hair and scalp and/or scrunch into the ends, and use leave-in Revitalising Hair & Scalp Tonic daily.

“I finally found what I was looking for!”

When I was first introduced to Dr Hauschka Skin Care I was working as a Product Specialist for a major retailer looking after the Skin Care Department. So you could say I have tried them all!

My question regarding Dr. Hauschka was “Why would this one be so different, to the rest of them?”

I was asked to try it for myself and not to use anything on my skin at night.

Now this goes against everything I was taught as a Beauty Therapist.

I was in my early thirties at the time and covering up acne scarring from my teenage years with theatre make-up.

Going into week 4 of only using Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products on one particular day my husband asked if I was wearing make-up? I replied, “No, I only have a Tinted Moisturiser on!”

He said “Your skin is looking so good.”

From that day onwards, and now 15 years later, I haven’t looked back. I now know wholeheartedly, and heading towards my fifties, an all-natural, organic and biodynamic Dr. Hauschka, less is more approach, gives me the results.

I can now say “I finally found what I was looking for.”

5 Reasons to take special care of your neck and décolleté

Most of us are in a good routine with our morning cleanse, tone and moisturise ritual for our face, but are you taking the best care of your neck and décolleté? Here are the reasons you need to.

1) Skin in these areas produces less oil than on your face, and neglecting it may result in premature ageing.

2) Skin is thinner, with a lower adipose tissue compared to your face, which makes it prone to dehydration and dryness.

3) Side sleepers particularly may notice wrinkles on their décolleté, making it even more important to nourish and restore this area daily.

4) The angle of your décolleté to the sun may mean full UV exposure. Apply a physical barrier (zinc and/or titanium dioxide) sunscreen to protect against sun damage.

5) Neck and décolleté are exposed to environmental influences, so daily protection is required from the dehydrating and drying effects of air conditioning, pollution, sun, wind etc.

How to care for your Neck & Décolleté

1) Morning ritual: Cleanse neck and décolleté, tone, apply intensive specific care Regenerating Neck & Décolleté Cream to protect, nourish, tone and firm.

2) Apply a physical barrier (zinc and/or titanium dioxide) sunscreen and remember to reapply.

3) Evening ritual: Cleanse, tone and apply oil-free night care, Regenerating Serum.

Neck & Décolleté Treatment TIP: After cleansing and toning warm around a large pea size of Hydrating Mask between the palms of your hands and gently press onto neck and décolleté. Leave to absorb as long as possible, removing with a tepid moist cloth.

Regenerating Neck & Décolleté Cream

firms, tones and smoothes

As we age, the skin’s natural processes of renewal begin to slow and skin loses elasticity. Regenerating Neck & Décolleté Cream supports the skin’s natural regenerative functions. Skin is hydrated, refined and revitalised for a smoother, more supple appearance. Wrinkles are visibly diminished and skin looks and feels firmer.

Formulation

  • Highly regenerative and phytoestrogen rich red clover, powerful antioxidant acerola berries and whole pomegranate* are blended with rose extract to support natural skin renewal, enhance skin tone and support elasticity.
  • Ancient field horsetail, a plant rich in bioavailable silica, fortifies and firms the skin.
  • Witch hazel distillate and marsh mallow leaf extract support the skin’s moisture balance.
  • Rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants are nourishing coconut, argan, jojoba, sesame, sweet almond, macadamia and sunflower oils.
  • Shea butter and beeswax protect your skin without being occlusive.

*Pomegranates, an age-defying ingredient

• We process the whole pomegranate fruit, including the peel for our products, obtaining a preparation that promotes regeneration of the skin.

• Pomegranate peel is an important ingredient because its extract inhibits an enzyme that is responsible for the breakdown of collagen in ageing skin.

• At the same time, the extract activates an enzyme that’s involved in the production of collagen.

• Pomegranate seed oil contained in the whole-fruit extract stimulates cell division in the keratinocytes, cells which produce the important skin-strengthening protein keratin.

Tips
a) Use in the bath or in your basin water for compressing and hydrating your facial skin prior to cleansing.
b) Spruce Bath Essence has such an uplifting aroma it may also be used for home or office, pour a little into a bowl and add hot water for the aroma to disperse. Perfect aroma for Christmas time too!

Bath Essences & Compressing

An aromatic compress to relax and revive.

We also recommend to compress and hydrate your face prior to cleansing. This relaxes the skin and softens the walls of the pores to achieve deep cleansing. The skins own functions are also stimulated. A cool compress applied to the skin after cleansing closes the pores, expelling any remaining impurities, leaving you with a clearer, softer skin.  Make compress and hydration part of your daily skin care rituals.  Fay from our Discovery Centre Rozelle store says “Using a compress brings life to the skin, you’ll notice the difference with your cleansing.”

The Dr. Hauschka Organic Cotton Compress is large, please don’t cut it, as the many layers once folded help to retain warmth.

1)         Fold the compress in half and half again.
2)         Both folds to be length wise, not square.
3)         Place folded Compress into the basin of Bath Essence infused water.
4)         Squeeze excess water from the Compress.
5)         Place firstly under the chin, then wrap the face and press.
6)         Repeat twice, now your skin is prepared for using Cleansing Cream or Soothing Cleansing Milk.

Natural body care from Dr. Hauschka

Our entire body acts as a service provider for this basic 24-hour thermal rhythm, which is incidentally directly linked to our awareness.
In today’s world, however, we often lack the basic warmth – whether because our clothes are too thin or due to everyday stress. Our bodies have cooled down and this causes us problems with regard to falling and staying asleep. We remain wide-awake long into the night, perhaps yearning for a warm evening atmosphere. It’s simply impossible to fall asleep with cold feet.
We focus on natural rhythms and use natural skin care from Dr. Hauschka to help you achieve a healthy thermal rhythm. For example, when you get up in the morning, the blood vessels near the surface of your skin contract, allowing the warmth to become centred, or booting up internally. You connect to your inner self and feel awake. At this time of day, our Lemon Lemongrass products are the perfect choice for helping you feel centred and alert. When you head to bed at night, the warmth wants to flow back to the tips of your fingers and toes. Your blood vessels near the surface of the skin expand and your hands and feet warm up. A warm foot bath with a Dr. Hauschka Bath Essence in the evening assists this process. Regular foot baths can do much more than just briefly warm your feet. They help your body regulate its inner warmth with long-lasting effect.
The Bath Essences are complemented by our Body Oils, all-rounders that support our basic thermal rhythm. They can centre the warmth, release it and allow it to flow. Enjoy attentively applying a little Body Oil to your stomach or the soles of your feet. A little nightly ritual like a warm hug or a loving goodnight kiss. This is our Dr. Hauschka cosmetics culture for you.

Interview

An interview with Annette Greco, Head of Galenic Development, and Florian Junge, Group Head of Product Management for Body Care about warmth and rhythm in relation to body care

Annette, you develop various Dr. Hauschka skin care products for the face and body. Is the skin on the body different to that on the face? Won’t one cream suffice for everything?

Annette Greco: Our facial skin has very different needs to that on our body. It is an organ of the head, just like our sensory organs the eyes, mouth and nose. Rather than being highly metabolically active and warm, these are cool and associated with catabolic processes. Accordingly, our facial skin breaks down more. This is not followed by anabolic processes, explaining why our face is the part of our body where we tend to develop wrinkles. I don’t know anyone who complains about wrinkles on their thighs. However, no-one has ever said “I’ve got cellulite on my cheeks” either. My body experiences clear metabolic processes with heat development. My face experiences clear nervous/sensory processes with catabolic effect. The care products for the body and face therefore need to differ.

How do the facial and body care products differ?

Greco: When it comes to the face, I always have to strengthen the anabolic processes. With regard to body care, on the other hand, the focus is on the dynamics of warmth. When developing body care products, we ask ourselves how we can support the generation of body heat by externally applying products but also how we can distribute this heat and allow it to flow but also release it.

Florian Junge: Daily protection still plays an important role for facial care. I cover my body with clothes but my face is more exposed. I have to protect it differently. The preparation for the day ahead is different than with body care.

And what about the oil-free night care that you recommend for the face? Is this also important for the body? Should I avoid using oily body care products in the evenings?

Greco: No, that’s not necessary. If you view Dr. Hauschka as skin care that respects rhythms, the reason becomes clearer. The face and the body quite simply follow different rhythms. In the case of the face, we support the anabolic and catabolic rhythm. As the anabolic processes generally occur in the aqueous element, the anabolic night care for the face is purely aqueous. When it comes to the body, we follow this rhythm by supporting the great fluctuation in inner warmth. Body care is therefore all about warmth, which gives me a sense of inner comfort, but that I also radiate or release again. Whereas the focus for facial care products is whether or not they are oil-free, when it comes to body care, you need to see if they offer warmth. Warming products always incorporate oils. As such, you are fine to apply cream or oil to your body on an evening.

Despite this, some people still find that their skin feels drier in the morning if they have used a Body Oil the night before.

Greco: Yes. This shows us that our Body Oils not only care for the skin, but people as a whole. I therefore often apply a Body Oil followed by a Body Cream.

Dr. Hauschka Body Oils care for people as a whole? That sounds very unusual. Can you elaborate?

Greco: The Body Oils are the Dr. Hauschka products that directly address the body’s warmth. In fact, oil is nothing more than concentrated summer warmth, concentrated sunshine. The addition of medicinal plants enables the oil to be tailored to specific needs. I have to start by asking myself what I want to achieve with the oil. The six Dr. Hauschka Body Oils offer me a huge range of diversity. For example, if I want to centre warmth, I opt for Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Oil, whereas Blackthorn Toning Body Oil helps me stimulate the generation of warmth in my body. I now have all of the Dr. Hauschka Body Oils at home and play with them like a keyboard. I sense what kind of oil I’m going to need for the day ahead or require at the end of each day.

That means that everyone has to find their own body care regime. Do you still focus on developing products for certain skin conditions though?

Greco: We tend to focus on the different conceptions of people instead. We’ve looked at the different human constitutions irrespective of body or facial care. How do we treat morning people with warmth and what about night owls? Which skin care rituals can be used to help people who struggle to maintain a healthy thermal rhythm? Warmth is incredibly inspirational for our work.

Is it possible for body and facial care to be separately considered at all when you are talking about people’s different constitutions?

Junge: No, but we unfortunately tend to always juxtapose facial and body care very abstractly or even present them as polar opposites. In fact, they intertwine very well. If I have a good centre and well-regulated warmth, then I also have a radiant appearance.

Greco: I’d even go a step further and really talk about the preservation of people’s health. Body care is the central element for maintaining or developing beauty. If I don’t strengthen my body’s original human destiny, I can do as much as I want to my face but my actions will have no effect. I can promote true beauty by caring for my body on a level that goes beyond simple skin care. This is not about saying whether the skin looks less flaky or has one more area of cellulite. This can be an aesthetic side-effect. It is about something that really makes people special as humans and about caring for this. And ultimately about something that leads to outer beauty via our inner being.

Nowadays, many people spend all day working at a computer and experience the sensation of their head getting ever warmer but their hands and feet ever colder. Can the right body care help with this?

Greco: Moor Lavender Calming Body Oil helps me in the mornings by offering me enveloping protection. In the evening, a foot bath with Moor Lavender Calming Bath Essence helps me digest the many thoughts in my crowded mind. However, body care is no substitute for me consciously focussing on myself. To believe that quickly warming my hands would make everything good would be a mere substitution. I need stimuli to help me independently restore my natural warmth balance. Cold hands are not my basic problem. The basic problem is that I have lost the sense of self-attention that shows me what is and isn’t good for me. When it comes to body care, for me it’s about restoring a sense of self-awareness.

Is the way I treat myself, listen to my body and care for myself part of the Dr. Hauschka cosmetics culture?

Junge: I believe so, yes. People today yearn to return to a skin care culture. But not through the profusion of applications offered by the spa industry. A sense of wellbeing can instead be created through omission, by me consciously enjoying something rather than just subjecting myself to a huge range of applications. The Dr. Hauschka products can help me experience situations with a sense of mindfulness. That is what I regard as this cosmetics culture that preserves good health or something that can help people as a life companion while also being contemporary. For me, it essentially comes down to the desire for mindfulness and to learn to be in touch with my body again. Perhaps it is also a cultural task.

Greco: Culture means nothing more than designing things. And I don’t have to paint pictures or make stone sculptures to do this. It’s also about shaping my own biography, my own everyday life. This is what I regard as culture. And when the manner in which I use skin care products can act as a stimulus for paying myself some attention and taking on a truly active design role, this is what I regard as cosmetics culture. But it’s also about my awareness towards the environment. For me, Dr. Hauschka cosmetics culture includes a sense of responsibility to nature, for processes and for applications. As well as taking responsibility for myself again and radiating senses of warmth, sociability and enthusiasm. After all, the way I treat myself can also impact my encounters with other people.

Product Manager Florian Junge recommends a relaxing foot bath before bed

“I can’t get to sleep when my feet are cold. I therefore give myself a foot bath while sitting back and relaxing. I close my eyes and simply enjoy the experience for as long as I like. In total silence with no distractions.
If I want, I can also use Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence for an invigorating foot bath after hiking or prepare for foot and nail care through a foot bath with Rose Nurturing Bath Essence.”

The aromatic composition of Regenerating Hand Cream

Interview with Jörg Zimmermann

A special fragrance is created for each and every Dr. Hauschka product. Our in-house perfume specialist, Jörg Zimmermann, only works with purely natural fragrances from essential oils. We do not use synthetic chemical fragrances whatsoever.

Discover what inspired Jörg when developing the composition for Regenerating Hand Cream.

What role does fragrance play for you in a skin care product?

I sometimes compare the un-fragranced cream to a blank canvas. This acts as the ground where ‘Heaven’ and ‘Earth’ meet. Life already exists but the enlivening element is only added by the fragrance. The relationship that we build with the fragrance is often such a close one that it creates a certain sense of yearning. I ask myself what this cream needs and what I can do to give it a special personality. I wanted to take all of the things already contained in the basic composition of Regenerating Hand Cream and use positive synergies to enhance and sublimate them; to use the fragrance to extend beyond the product and enthuse. The fragrance gives the Hand Cream its own, unmistakeable language.

Is the fragrance meant to trigger something specific?

I’d instead say that it’s a motif that I want to make perceptible. Ideas, experiences and olfactory memories come together to form sensations and a certain atmosphere. Just as a sensory experience is made up of many different facets, a fragrance expresses a new material character through its novel combination of essential oils. I deploy my experience, intuition and imagination to check the use of the essential oils and slowly build up a picture, a fine impression. During this process, it is important to form transitions, a progression through the senses, a metamorphosis. The fragrance develops in front of you, from its head notes to its base ones, bringing part of the idea to life.

How would you describe the fragrance of Regenerating Hand Cream?

The products in the Dr. Hauschka Regenerating Skin Care range have been developed for demanding, mature skin. I quickly realised that Regenerating Hand Cream needed to have a very refined and rich fragrance. To preserve the close connection to other products from the Regenerating Skin Care range, I opted for an ambery basic note, which is already perceptible in Regenerating Body Cream and Regenerating Neck and Décolleté Cream. The ambery note comprises a mixture of warm, balsamic substances, which allow an association with amber and create a velvety depth. Vetiver, vanilla, sandalwood… are essential oils hidden within this. If you hold amber up to the sunlight, you will see a warm, enveloping shade that evokes a great sense of wellbeing. This note is in part the ‘basic tone’, which runs through the fragrance like a thread.

You can find the ambery fragrance family in the luxury segment of niche perfumery but also in the conventional sector. Most of the fragrances have sensual, oriental tones that remind us of Arabia. In the midst of these oriental jewels, the sensual rose appears as through from a garden from One Thousand and One Nights.

First Love

Limited edition special size Cleansing Cream & Rose Day Cream

When the first Dr. Hauschka products appeared on the market in 1967, the concept of a natural skin care range that promotes healthy skin was something entirely new.

Now, in 2017, Dr. Hauschka is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. As a thank you, we are offering Cleansing Cream and Rose Day Cream in limited edition larger anniversary sizes with 17% savings.

Cleansing Cream

The delicate aroma and pure, fresh feel it gives to the skin have made our Cleansing Cream a customer favourite for many years. The concentrated ‘cream’ is recommended for cleansing any skin condition and the perfect choice for a deep cleanse in the morning after the night time elimination activities of your skin. The lipid-replenishing composition with calendula, chamomile, St. John’s wort, anthyllis and almond gently invigorates and cleanses the skin. The appearance of pores is minimised.

  • Refines, revitalises and deeply cleanses all skin conditions.
  • Gentle and effective morning cleanser for deep cleansing after the skin’s night time eliminating activities.
  • Respects the pH (acid mantle) protective function, and hydrolipid layer of skin while cleansing.

  • Gently exfoliates only those skin cells that are ready to slough off.
  • Fortifies and refreshes.
  • Prepares skin for Toner and Moisturiser.
  • Minimises the appearance of pores.
  • Leaves skin feeling soft and silky.

Application: Compress and hydrate skin. Mix 1-2 cm of Cleansing Cream with warm water in the palms to form a smooth, creamy emulsion. Press mixture gently onto skin then roll hands up and away in a wave-like motion – ‘press and roll’. Start in the centre of the forehead then slowly work outward and down. Avoid the eye area. Repeat the press and roll action 2-3 times. Do not rub or scrub. Rinse with warm water then finish with splashes of cool water.

Note: Should you feel your skin needs a secondary deep cleanse in the evening with Cleansing Cream after Soothing Cleansing Milk, you may do so.
