Key Ingredients

Pomegranate Fruit Extract
Pomegranate fruit helps the skin to regenerate as well as having antioxidant properties. They also store a huge amount of moisture and vitality. The Pomegranate extract used in Dr. Hauschka Foundation is obtained by processing the entire fruit, including its skin.

Pomegranates not only taste good, they have a range of health benefits. Anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties have been ascribed to them. They’re also resistant to drought and can store much moisture and vitality in their fruit.

An age-defying ingredient

  • We process the whole Pomegranate fruit, including the Peel for our products, obtaining a preparation that promotes regeneration of the skin.
  • Pomegranate Peel is an important ingredient because its extract inhibits an enzyme that is responsible for the breakdown of collagen in ageing skin.
  • At the same time, the extract activates an enzyme that’s involved in the production of collagen.
  • Pomegranate Seed Oil contained in the whole-fruit extract stimulates cell division in the keratinocytes, cells which produce the important skin-strengthening protein keratin.

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is slow in penetrating the skin’s layers, it leaves the skin feeling soft and silky smooth all day. The coconut oil in Dr. Hauschka Foundation comes from a small farming project in Sri Lanka, which is certified by both Naturland and Fair For Life. This gives the formulation a stable, moisturising base.

Macadamia Nut Oil
Macadamia nuts take a very long time to ripen and are only ready when they fall from the tree of their own accord. Macadamia nut oil is absorbed easily by the skin and is unique among oils owing to the high amount of antioxidant palmitoleic acid that it contains.

The composition also includes nourishing Jojoba and Apricot Kernel Oil, Anthyllis which is a key ingredient to bring all skin conditions to a state of balance, protective Shea Butter and Candelilla Wax, provitamin A rich Carrot Root Extract and Silica to strengthen skin.

Tips from Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist

  • To find the right shade of Dr. Hauschka Foundation for you, apply three different shades on your cheekbones and choose the colour which blends best with your face and neck.
  • You should apply Foundation in small amounts starting with the forehead and then moving on to the nose, chin and cheeks – always work downwards to avoid emphasising pores and fine hairs.
  • Blend the transition between the neck, ears and hairline so that no edges are visible.
  • Because your skin will begin absorbing Foundation immediately, we recommend applying product from the top of the lid, rather than the back of your hand.
  • You can apply a second coat of Foundation for more coverage.
  • A moist sponge may be used for a lighter coverage, alternatively to achieve a more translucent make-up, mix Foundation with your Dr. Hauschka Moisturiser.
  • Applying and patting in the Foundation with a foundation brush helps to conceal redness and imperfections more effectively.

A nurturing base for an even complexion

For the Foundation to go on evenly, your skin should first be cleansed and moisturised. Otherwise, large amounts of Foundation will become concentrated on dry spots, creating an uneven result. Perhaps your lips, neck and the area under your eyes could use a little cream? This creates the optimum base for and even and long-lasting make-up.

Application and fixing

For seamless application, apply a little Foundation from your forehead down to your nose, as well as to your chin and cheeks. Always work downwards so as not to emphasise pores or tiny hairs. Next, spread the Foundation outwards to the sides of your face, blending in the areas of transition with your neck, ears and hair line.

Concealer before or after?

After! For greater coverage in specific areas or to conceal shadows on the inner corner of the eyes, add a little Concealer. But don’t cover up too much – leave the moles or freckles that are part of your beauty.

Why use Powder?

Powder helps to fix the liquid Foundation and enhances the staying power of your make-up. Use a Powder Brush to work a little loose power into your skin using downwards strokes. To create a more matte effect, you can press the powder onto your skin using a powder puff, gently rolling it back and forth. Powder Compact is a practical choice if you like to refresh your make-up while out and about.

Fingers, sponge or brush?

At hand temperature, Foundation spreads easily and harmoniously blends with your complexion. Please moisturise your hands well before use. This allows you to apply the Foundation evenly.

Easily, with a sponge

Application with a slightly damp sponge for speed of application.

Carefully, with a brush

When using a Foundation Brush, you can apply the Foundation to specific areas, increasing its ability to conceal blemishes.

Air brushed finish

Foundation Brush is great for giving an ‘air brushed’ finish, and for blending colour at jawline.

For a little extra glow

For a hint of summer sun-kissed freshness, mix a small amount of Translucent Bronzing Tint with your Foundation.

Mix shades

Different tones open up interesting opportunities: the shades can be combined in any way you like to create your very own, personal Foundation or adapt your usual shade to the time of year. A darker shade helps to emphasise your cheek area.

For a bit of quick refreshment

If you applied your Foundation a few hours ago, you can give your face a little extra hydration later in the day, Mist a small amount of Facial Toner onto your face.

Too much Powder or Foundation?

Spray a little Toner onto a Powder Brush and gently brush across your face.

For a long-lasting result, high colour correcting result

For longer-lasting results and a flawless complexion, apply a little Colour Correcting Powder to your face first, to colour correct and as a matte base for Foundation. Apply a little over the Foundation as well, to set your make-up.

Simply Quince • refreshingly uncomplicated

What makes quince so special?

Quince offers two interesting raw materials:

  • Quince wax -protects the slowly ripening fruit and also your skin. A very rarely used substance.
  • Quince seed extract from the core of the fruit. It has the gift to bind moisture. As an extract soothe and smooth the skin.

Why is Quince used as an ingredient in Dr. Hauschka products?

  • Quince seed extract helps your skin to retain moisture, perfect for a dry and/or dehydrated skin.
  • Quince wax protectively envelops the fruit, transferring this same ability to your skin for gentle and effective protection and strengthening your skin’s natural barrier.
  • Soothing and cooling, and leaves your skin soft and smooth, with the refreshing aroma of quince.

Who is Quince?

  • The quince is closely related to apple and pear. It is also belongs to the rose family.
  • It originates from the Middle East, from where its route into the Mediterranean area and with the help of the Romans brought it across the Alps and to the medieval monastery gardens of Europe.
  • For thousands of years it has hardly been altered by growers and therefore it has retained much of its original wild fruit character.

How does quince fruit get into our products?

Quince wax and quitztensamen

Quince wax

Organic quince from Spain are intended for juice production, however it’s a stroke of luck that Dr. Hauschka is able to get fresh press residues from an adjacent juice plant. The precious quince wax can be obtained with the aid of a particularly gentle process.

Hand processed Quince seeds

The quince seeds inside the fruit are surrounded by a slimy layer, which can absorb large quantities of water. The quince seeds are placed overnight in water, which creates a smooth, shiny texture around them. The next day, they are squeezed out by hand. This process, which was developed a long time ago by WALA/Dr. Hauschka, gently wins the valuable quince seed extract.

When does flowering, when green, when does the quince mature?

White to tender pink flowers blossom and from them develop small fruit, which already show the characteristic quince form and are hairy on the outside. As the ripening process progresses the bright yellow fruit give off a wonderful fresh scent.

Autumn is the season for Quince

The days are getting shorter, nature is slowly coming to rest, and it’s harvest time for quince. Here are two ways to immerse yourself in the season of quince.

  • Place a bowl of quince fruit on your table to enjoy their aroma for a while.
  • Then make Quince Syrup from them. Recipe below.

Quince Syrup Recipe

Quince Syrup makes a refreshing and welcome change, mixed with water or sparkling mineral water. Pour a little syrup in a cup of black tea, drizzle over a freshly baked cake or ice cream.

Quince Syrup:

  • 1 kg fresh quince fruit
  • 1 litre water
  • 250g sugar
  • juice of a lemon

Rub off the furry coating from the quince and wash. You can process the quinces with the shell and core casing, remove only the stem and the flower neck. Finely chop and bring to the boil with water. Cover and simmer for about 45 minutes at low heat. Pour through a sieve and press as much of the pulp as possible. Then pour again through a fine sieve or muslin cloth so that the juice is as clear as possible.

Now let the juice boil with sugar and the squeezed lemon for about 10 minutes. Fill into sterilised bottles and close immediately.

Rose Cultivation Partnership Projects

Damask Rose (Rosa damascena)

In creating the formulations for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, we draw on the many things that nature has to offer. For example, medicinal plants, botanical oils and waxes and genuine essential oils. Working with renewable natural raw materials has many logistical challenges, therefore long term planning is imperative for us. Many of the medicinal herbs we need are grown by our gardeners in our own biodynamic garden or in the fields on our Demeter certified farm, Sonnenhof. We also purchase other raw materials from regional sources as the climate is not suitable for growing some of the plant species from which we obtain raw materials. WALA*/Dr. Hauschka initiates and supports organic or biodynamic cultivation projects all over the world to ensure premium quality, sufficient quantity, continuity and longevity of ingredient supplies, and we embrace social responsibility and fair price principles. A prime example of this is Rose Essential Oil partnerships in Bulgaria, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and our most recently launched Rose Project in the Ethiopian Highlands.

Did you know?

• There are 30 organic or biodynamic roses in every tube of Rose Day Cream.

• We sell tubes of Rose Day Cream per minute worldwide!

• We purchase the highest quantity of the world’s highest grade organic rose essential oil. It comes from our biodynamic or organic cultivation partnership projects in Ethiopia, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria and Afghanistan.

• Approximately one hectare of roses is needed to obtain 1 kg of precious Rose Essential Oil, which is used in nearly all Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Make-up products and in many WALA medicines.

Harvesting roses in Ethiopia; Rosenernte Äthiopien
Rose Project – Ethiopian Highlands

Ethiopia

When it comes to sources of Rose Essential Oil, countries such as Turkey, Bulgaria, Iran and Afghanistan come to mind – but Ethiopia? As it turns out, the Ethiopian highlands, which are well known for their coffee, provide the ideal conditions for growing the very fragrant Damask Rose, and it yields an exceptionally precious essential oil.

WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care support the Terra PLC Damask Rose Farm, a fair trade initiative in Ethiopia. We are helping to create a self-reliant and economically sustainable community by establishing a biodynamic resource for Damask Rose Essential Oil, a key ingredient in the Dr. Hauschka range.

In 2005 WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care provided Ethiopian grower, Fekade Lakew, with rose cuttings and introduced him to a consultant to train and advise on biodynamic cultivation methods. It took 7 years before the first harvest of rose blossoms. At that time, in 2012, Lakew also initiated the biodynamic certification process. Once certified, his farm was the sole certified biodynamic source of rose essential oil in Africa.

A key benefit of growing roses near the equator is that the lifespan of the bloom increases substantially, giving farmers twice the time to harvest, and requiring fewer pickers who can often be employed beyond the typical picking season. Ethiopian roses in particular are nearly twice as heavy as blossoms from other countries resulting in a greater yield from fewer plants.

WALA/Dr. Hauschka Skin Care committed to purchasing all of the rose essential oil produced at Fekade Lakew’s farm for a period of ten years, and 60-70% thereafter. This ensures that the initiative has ample time to establish itself without becoming dependent upon a single customer for all its revenue in the long term.

Damask Rose Essential Oil from Ethiopia is used in the formulations of nearly all Dr. Hauschka products, including Rose Day Cream, Rose Day Cream Light, Rose Nurturing Body Wash, Rose Deodorant, Rose Nurturing Body Oil, Rose Nurturing Body Moisturiser, and many of our make-up products. When a Dr. Hauschka customer purchases products featuring this hero ingredient, she/he helps support the growth of this fair trade effort in Ethiopia and Dr. Hauschka’s other rose cultivation projects around the globe.

Rose Project – Iran

Iran

The cultivation of roses in ‘Persia’ is an ancient tradition. There are 1500 growers who work as independent operators for Zahra Rosewater Company, our partner in Iran. Through biodynamic practices over the last few decades the annual production yield is now 900 tonnes of rose water (rose hydrosol) and 150 kgs of rose essential oil. WALA/Dr. Hauschka purchase more than one third of all the rose oil and dried rose blossoms that Zahra produces. The Iranian government subsidises chemical fertilisers, so initially it was extremely difficult to convince the farmers to refrain from using them, and to embrace biodynamic agriculture. Education and training were and still are important pillars of the collaboration with these growers.

Anyone working with Zahra is family and as part of this family-oriented collaboration, older people no longer able to work receive a kind of pension, Zahra has improved the water supply to the villages and supports the schools. A local health centre set up by Zahra guarantees primary health care. Zahra makes it possible for gifted children to attend a special school. The hope is that they will return to their villages with a good education and work there. The idea is working, Lalehzar has the lowest unemployment rate in the region. Zahra also donates part of its profits to the orphanages of the Sanati Foundation.

WALA Medicines; WALA Heilmittel GmbH
Rose Project – Bulgaria

Bulgaria

Rose oil has been produced for the French perfume industry since the end of the 19th century. These days, however, the perfume industry uses mainly synthetic chemical ‘perfume’ as a much cheaper option. WALA/Dr. Hauschka  instigated long term supply contracts with Bulgarian rose growers and the provision of loans to support our new partners. Organic Certification was gained in 2003.

rose flowers, Ethiopia; Rosenblüten, Äthiopien
Rose Project – Turkey

Turkey

Some 320 mountain farmers in the Baskoop Rose Co-operative have adapted their methods of cultivation to supply certified organic roses. WALA is significantly contributing to securing the livelihoods of the local farming families and to the survival of the traditional and labour intensive rose distilling industry. WALA also bears all costs for agricultural, technical and organic consultations and some of the costs of certification.

Auf dem Rosenfeld
Rose Project – Afghanistan

Afghanistan

Did you know that 80% of the world’s heroin comes from Afghanistan? In order to combat the opium trade in Afghanistan and on the initiative of German Agro Action a project was set up for producing rose oil in 2004.  This project offers an alternative means of securing a sustainable and honourable livelihood for local farmers. WALA/Dr. Hauschka expressed an interest in the project in 2006 and has been supporting it ever since. Today over 700 farmers are growing organic Damask roses on more than 100 hectares of land. A large volume of organic rose oil is produced, most of which is sold to WALA/Dr. Hauschka.  This ancient Afghan tradition has been brought back to life with this budding partnership.

Our Rose Essential Oil is derived from Rosa damascena, named so from Damascus in Syria, also known as the Damask Rose.  This most fragrant of roses produces the highest quality Rose Essential Oil, also known as Rose Otto, or Attar of Roses.

Beat the Heat Make-up Tips

Always cleanse, tone and moisturise before applying makeup. You may wish to use a matte moisturiser such as Rose Day Cream Light or if you have a combination oily T-zone skin then use Melissa Day Cream. If you have a dry/dehydrated skin that needs a moisturiser that’s activating yet very light in texture for summer time, then use Revitalising Day Cream. Leave your moisturiser to absorb fully prior to make-up application.

For a long-lasting make-up in hot weather our International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar, recommends this technique…

1) Apply Colour Correcting Powder, Loose Powder or Compact Powder first.

Our Powders and Foundation blend together beautifully. Dr. Hauschka 100% natural make-up is free from silicones, so you won’t get a patchy look.

2) You now have a matte base to apply your Foundation.

3) Apply Colour Correcting Powder, Loose Powder or Compact Powder again to set make-up.

4) Apply Blush and/or Bronzer.

5) Mist your make-up with Toner.

Multi-tasking product TIP
At the moment I’m loving Blush Duo 03 sun-kissed nectarine for both cheeks and eyes.

HOT TIPS for a long-lasting eye liner and brows

1) Moisten an angled brush with Toner.

2) Pick up colour with your brush from just the one corner of the darkest shade of your Eyeshadow Palette or Trio.

3) With your brush apply a line to the lower lash line from outer to inner, starting a little further out than the outer edge of your eye.

4) You’ll need to pick up more colour with your brush, then apply to the upper lash line from the outer to the inner and beginning from the extended colour from your lower lash line so the two meet.

5) Define your brows with the residual colour left on the brush and set with Brow & Lash Gel.

If you prefer a more defined upper lash line that will also stay the distance.

Apply Eyeshadow for a matte start, then Eye Definer Pencil and set with Eyeshadow over the top. Alternatively use Liquid Eyeliner.

Long-lasting lipstick

1) Apply Blush to your lips first, which provides a matte base.

2) Use Lip Liner over the entire lip area rather than an outline.

3) Apply your favourite Lipstick, ‘kiss’ a tissue to remove excess, and re-apply.

“I finally found what I was looking for!”

When I was first introduced to Dr Hauschka Skin Care I was working as a Product Specialist for a major retailer looking after the Skin Care Department. So you could say I have tried them all!

My question regarding Dr. Hauschka was “Why would this one be so different, to the rest of them?”

I was asked to try it for myself and not to use anything on my skin at night.

Now this goes against everything I was taught as a Beauty Therapist.

I was in my early thirties at the time and covering up acne scarring from my teenage years with theatre make-up.

Going into week 4 of only using Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products on one particular day my husband asked if I was wearing make-up? I replied, “No, I only have a Tinted Moisturiser on!”

He said “Your skin is looking so good.”

From that day onwards, and now 15 years later, I haven’t looked back. I now know wholeheartedly, and heading towards my fifties, an all-natural, organic and biodynamic Dr. Hauschka, less is more approach, gives me the results.

I can now say “I finally found what I was looking for.”

b) Spruce Bath Essence has such an uplifting aroma it may also be used for home or office, pour a little into a bowl and add hot water for the aroma to disperse. Perfect aroma for Christmas time too!

Bath Essences & Compressing

An aromatic compress to relax and revive.

We also recommend to compress and hydrate your face prior to cleansing. This relaxes the skin and softens the walls of the pores to achieve deep cleansing. The skins own functions are also stimulated. A cool compress applied to the skin after cleansing closes the pores, expelling any remaining impurities, leaving you with a clearer, softer skin.  Make compress and hydration part of your daily skin care rituals.  Fay from our Discovery Centre Rozelle store says “Using a compress brings life to the skin, you’ll notice the difference with your cleansing.”

The Dr. Hauschka Organic Cotton Compress is large, please don’t cut it, as the many layers once folded help to retain warmth.

1)         Fold the compress in half and half again.
2)         Both folds to be length wise, not square.
3)         Place folded Compress into the basin of Bath Essence infused water.
4)         Squeeze excess water from the Compress.
5)         Place firstly under the chin, then wrap the face and press.
6)         Repeat twice, now your skin is prepared for using Cleansing Cream or Soothing Cleansing Milk.

We serve people, not markets

When Dr. Rudolf Hauschka founded WALA in 1935, he certainly asked himself these and other similar questions. And he found the answers in products obtained from nature as well as the establishment of the WALA Foundation, to which WALA Heilmittel GmbH belongs. Over time, these answers resulted in the development of a very special cosmetics culture with a clear objective: the sustainable creation of persistent values for people rather than a quick profit.

The locations in which we develop and manufacture Dr. Hauschka products are closely linked to our responsibilities towards the environment and the people we deal with. We have been based in Eckwälden since 1967 and have made a conscious decision to remain there. WALA’s biodynamic medicinal herb garden, product development facilities and product manufacturing facilities have all been located in this agricultural region in southern Germany at the foot of the Swabian Jura Mountains since the 1950s. Eckwälden is a small village where shepherds drive their flocks of sheep through. At least, that is one description of it. On the other hand, we have brought a real cosmopolitan feel to the village. For instance, when international visitors come to see us, but also when organic raw materials for our products are brought here from all over the world or we prepare the transport documents for the shipment of the over 130 Dr. Hauschka products. Shipments that will go to customers in some 40 countries worldwide.

And the WALA Foundation?

All profits generated by WALA Heilmittel GmbH initially go to the Foundation as its owner. This then invests them in the GmbH’s development. After all, its sole purpose is to promote WALA’s prosperous development. The Foundation appoints our GmbH’s management and ensures that our cosmetics culture shapes everyday business practices. It enables us to invest in not only the quality of our products but also the development of our around 1,000 employees as well as sustainable projects in both Germany and other countries from which we obtain raw materials for our products. The WALA Foundation provides us with the necessary independence and freedom to continue our responsible use of money as well as to fulfil a certain cultural mission: to develop and manufacture natural products that care for people’s skin, have healing properties and promote beauty.

An interview with Dr. Johannes Stellmann

Managing Director of WALA Heilmittel GmbH, about beauty, money as an enabling instrument and corporate responsibility

Dr. Hauschka has embodied a very special cosmetics culture since 1967. What does this involve in your eyes?

It starts with the way in which we develop and manufacture our products and continues with our skin care treatments. However, the overall driving force for our company, our origins and our use of resources are also all of a cultural nature. For me, the guiding principle is ‘different from day one’.

Different from day one? What was so different in the early days of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care?

Simply take a look at the way Elisabeth Sigmund worked. She essentially started to develop her own natural cosmetics in the early 1930s. These eventually then came onto the market in cooperation with us in 1967. If you think about it carefully, you will see that she developed these products for over 35 years before they hit shop shelves. She took a great deal of time for her work. This process was totally different to all others. Then, there are our origins. WALA was actually founded as a result of a charitable enquiry when Dr. Ita Wegman, co-founder of anthroposophic medicine, asked Dr. Rudolf Hauschka to develop medicines without any use of alcohol. These were intended for children, the elderly and the seriously ill. The result was the alcohol-free WALA medicines. This shows that we are actually a cultural organisation. We wear an economic gown but I believe that we are driven by a clearly cultural stimulus. Even our finances show that we are still a hybrid company.

WALA as a hybrid company? What does that mean?

‘Hybrid’ means that my commercial framework contains a large charitable element. This makes us very different from Bill Gates, for example, who earned a huge amount of money with monopoly pensions and then pledged to give away 90 percent of his assets. I am always intrigued at how people can divide their consciousness in such a way that they can do something to earn money and then be charitable or generous afterwards. We want to find a business structure that means we do not have to blush when the value is created. To do this, we have a different mindset from the start. We look at the creation of a product followed by its use in a different cultural arc. This charitableness that others often incorporate at the end of their life is something we make part of the here and now, of everyday practice.

You referred to WALA as a cultural organisation. That surprises me as it manufactures medicines and natural cosmetics. What makes WALA a cultural organisation?

On a basic level, the culture dictates that we regard ourselves as ‘enablers’ rather than ‘makers’ with regard to both our medicines and our cosmetics. We support healing and flourishing. We do not aim to replace or suppress the immune system with WALA medicines, but to support it. Similar applies to Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products too. We support the skin to help it return to a normal skin condition. And in doing so, we actually train it. From this perspective, we are a training institute at product level. However, this is not in the form of a service; the trainer is a product, and I find that fantastic. We are very process oriented. And we are not about instantaneousness; we are not ‘this second’ people who offer rapid-effect creams. We are about allowing things time. Our company thrives on time, for example during gradual skin care treatments that I take my time to enjoy or manufacturing processes that take time to mature. This has a cultural dimension for me.

You once said that Dr. Hauschka develops products for people, not markets. Can you elaborate?

Take our Rose Day Cream for example. This has been part of our product range since day one, since 1967. It does not have any right to eternally exist per se but I do not currently see any reason why we should remove it from the market. I also choose to ignore standard product life cycle theories, which dictate that Rose Day Cream should be removed from the product range after ten years. That is not the way we work because this product is a classic. Why? Because we develop products for people, not markets. Elisabeth Sigmund asked what people need. She never asked where a market could be found, but instead always focused on the requirements of people’s skin. This is a completely different approach. It is about needs. And this approach continues to guide us today. We start with the question of what people need rather than where there is a market that we might be able to tap into. We prefer to put our money into product development, the manufacturing process and high-quality raw materials.

It is thanks to the WALA Foundation that you have this freedom to invest the money where you choose. What is the Foundation’s role?

The WALA Foundation is the sole owner of WALA Heilmittel GmbH. It offers us the major advantage that capital cannot be taken from the company as a result of either private interests or inheritance. In other regards, however, things are far more difficult for us than for other companies because we cannot obtain equity from external sources. In other words, we cannot approach investors and ask them to join us and bring a few hundred million euros with them. That road is closed to us. We operate without a safety net.

You use the profits in a very special way and say that this money is an enabling instrument for you. Can you elaborate?

Firstly, we view money as an integral part of all activities rather than just from a profit perspective. Right from the outset in the value-added chain, we ask ourselves how we can fulfil the responsibility that we bear. For example, if I pick up a jumper in a shop and buy it, I essentially trigger a manufacturing order for the new jumper that will replace it on the shelf. This means that I cannot remove myself from being responsible for what happens in the manufacturing chain. Ten years ago, I could have said that I did not know anything about this but in today’s digital age, I can find out about the manufacturing processes. If I take this responsibility seriously and transfer it to us here at WALA, I have to think forwards from the value-added chain to the product. That means I have to pay attention to how the raw materials I buy are produced. And then, I have to look at how we actually manufacture the product. And if I have done my job well, then hopefully we will generate a profit. The question then naturally arises of how we will use this profit. It is of huge benefit to us that we do not have to serve owners. Instead, for example, we can enable new partnerships for organic raw materials, which might not be produced otherwise. This was the case with shea butter from Burkina Faso, castor oil and mango butter from India and essential rose oil from Ethiopia. Alternatively, we can enable partners to become completely independent from us. Initially, project partners often rely on us 100%. We are extremely committed to making them independent within a few years whenever possible.

It sounds like the money you put into projects is a seed that multiplies as it grows.

Most definitely. And if we stick with the idea of the sower who has to accept that not every seed will grow, this also applies to us. You could naturally see this as us wasting money, but we are wiser after doing so than we were beforehand. When I start something, I also say “yes” to failure. I cannot develop without making mistakes. These are simply part of the renewal process. I therefore always talk about the ‘error compost’. One example is our new Dr. Hauschka Make-up line, which was launched at the start of 2017. We started developing the new line in 2011 and 99% of what we did went in the bin. But if we had not done this, we would have developed something mainstream black, rectangular, circular. We would never have devised the curve of constant width as the design for the powder trays and would probably never have decided to use dark purple rather than black for the packaging.

What is your vision for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care? What does the future hold?

The principle of being ‘different from day one’ will continue to guide us. We are committed to ensuring that our products meet both our own and all legal requirements with regard to quality and safety. However, we also always say that we try to forge our own path. My conduct is shaped by the inner commitment to doing things differently to others. And this takes courage. It also fits well with our central idea of learning as we work and working as we learn. Errors, failures and mistakes form part of this. Without them, I cannot learn.

How many countries are involved in you being able to enjoy a Dr. Hauschka Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Milk in your bathroom?

For example, the essential lemon oil comes from Italy and the lemongrass oil from Nepal. Field horsetail for structure-giving extracts comes from wild collections in German-speaking countries. Sage for fortifying extracts is usually grown on our Demeter farm whereas the nourishing oils found in the Body Milk come from jojoba and olives grown in Argentina and Spain respectively. Our employees combine these organic raw materials in Eckwälden to produce Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Milk. Once bottled and packaged, the finished product is supplied to users in some 40 countries on all continents.

How to Enhance Your Eyes

Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar

Choosing the perfect eyeshadow

To really enhance your eyes, to make them look more alluring, bigger, brighter and the whites appear whiter, then choose eyeshadow colours that fall opposite to your iris colour on the colour wheel, as opposed to colours that are the same or similar colour as your eyes or colours that match your clothes.

Complementary colours

Colour wheel
Colour wheel

The opposite of blue is orange/golds/browns

The opposite of green is lilac/burgundy/pinks

The opposite of brown is aqua/blues/greens

Using complementary colours provides the most contrast between your iris colour and your shadow colour, therefore it’s this contrast that enhances your eyes.

Suggestions to enhance your iris colour

Blue Eyes

Eyeshadow Trio 04 sunstone, Eyeshadow 05 amber, Eye Definer 02 brown/05 taupe, Liquid Eyeliner 02 brown, Defining Mascara 02 brown, Volume Mascara 02 brown.

Green Eyes

Eyeshadow Trio 03 ametrine, Eyeshadow 03 rubellite, Eye Definer 06 plum/02 brown, Liquid Eyeliner 02 brown, Defining Mascara 02 brown, Volume Mascara 02 brown/03 plum.

Brown Eyes

Eyeshadow Trio 01 sapphire/02 jade, Eyeshadow 04 verdelite, 02 lapis lazuli, Eye Definer 01 black, 03 blue, 04 green, Liquid Eyeliner 01 black, Defining Mascara 01 black/03 blue, Volume Mascara 01 black.

Hazel Eyes are multiple colours so choose the same recommendations as for brown eyes using the colour wheel concept to contrast differing colour flecks in your eyes to highlight.

Aside from complementary colours, everyone needs a brown, taupe and neutral shades palette too, This also includes brown eyes, which can use browns, just need to stay away from muddy browns. Eye & Brow Palette with matte shades for both eyes and brows.

Application Tips

  1. Always apply eyeshadow from outer towards inner, not the other way around, for a professional and uplifting look to your eyeshadow application. When you apply from inner to outer you end up with colour dragging your eye downwards.
  2. When you’re applying your deepest colour to the crease, always keep your eyes open to ensure correct placement of the colour.

Sustainable Partnerships Around The World

Celebrating Cosmetics Culture
Organic raw materials from around the world

Creating a better world
Sustainable partnerships all around the world

In creating the formulations for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, we draw on the many things that nature has to offer. For example, medicinal plants, botanical oils and waxes and genuine essential oils – naturally of organic quality wherever possible. Many of the medicinal plants used grow in our own biodynamic medicinal herb garden or in the fields on our Demeter farm, the Sonnenhof. We also purchase other raw materials from regional sources. Our climate is simply not suitable for growing some of the plant species from which we obtain raw materials.

Fragrant roses for essential rose oil, almond trees and jojoba bushes, for example. We want to purchase these in organic quality for our formulations as well. To do this, we sometimes have to instigate the production of organic raw materials in the first place. Essential rose oil, mango butter, castor oil and shea butter are just a few of the raw materials to which this applies. We support farmers financially and with our knowledge of organic farming. We help them obtain organic certifications and guarantee certain purchase volumes.

It goes without saying that we are committed to fair trade conditions characterised by mutual trust and independent development opportunities. We therefore have a solid and long-term working relationship with many organic farming partners, including ones who grow almonds and olives in Spain, jojoba in Argentina and macadamia nuts in Kenya. We help our partners increase their production capacities and, where desired, finance regular visits to them by biodynamic consultants.

The aim of such involvement is always to enable the partners to develop commercially and achieve economic stability that makes them independent from us.

We also believe that such partnerships should involve good local working conditions. Thus, we have encouraged developments such as the creation of social areas for the workers of an oil mill and supported the construction of suitable sanitary facilities, for example. After all, it is not only financial independence that is important to us, but also better social conditions for people locally.

An interview with Ralf Kunert
Managing Director of naturamus GmbH, a WALA subsidiary

Click play for Interview with Ralf Kunert, managing director of Naturamus GmbH, sourcing raw ingredients.

Mr Kunert, what exactly does naturamus GmbH do?

As an independent subsidiary of WALA Heilmittel GmbH, we purchase all the raw materials for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and WALA Medicines. This involves about a thousand different raw materials, such as essential and fatty oils, fresh plants and pharmaceutical auxiliary substances like emulsifiers or raw globules for medicines.

You purchase the raw materials in organic quality wherever possible, but what do you do if this quality is not available?

If a raw material or sufficient quantities thereof are not available in organic quality, we initiate raw material partnerships around the world on behalf of WALA. The WALA philosophy expressly states that these partners should become financially independent. To do this, they need to sell their products to a wider customer base. We put a great deal of time and energy into implementing these principles.

You have already found a partner for the high-quality organic macadamia nut oil used in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products. What criteria did this partner have to meet?

Organic quality and fair trade are key criteria for us. We therefore purchase organic macadamia nuts in Kenya and process them to obtain oil in our own production plant for quality reasons. Our local partner is LIMBUA, an organically certified Kenyan company that sells macadamia nuts and avocados that it purchases from smallholder farmers. LIMBUA was established as a result of the impressive ‘macadamiafans’ initiative founded in 2009.

What kind of initiative is macadamiafans and what makes it so impressive?

First and foremost, macadamiafans is based on a social concept. The initiative helps macadamia farmers in Kenya create short channels between producers and consumers. macadamiafans offers farmers and their families direct access to the export market so that intermediaries no longer take a large portion of the profits. This all happens in cooperation with the WELT:KLASSE Foundation. Student companies from Germany are responsible for selling the Kenyan macadamia nuts.

Once again for clarity: you are impressed by macadamiafans but buy from LIMBUA. What is the relation between these two partners?

macadamiafans Kenya Ltd. is the initial source. The founders, Hannes and Matti Spiecker, also established LIMBUA Group Limited to help farmers receive a better income. LIMBUA follows the exact same philosophy as macadamiafans. Whereas the market-related activities of macadamiafans, as a LIMBUA educational project, still follow the original idea behind the initiative and focus solely on student companies, LIMBUA also sells directly to large, commercial customers. This improves market access for the smallholder farmers who are already involved in the initiative, including for their other organic products. Since 2009, a major rise in interest has also been seen from neighbouring farmers. The expanded customer base means that it is now possible for more and more smallholder farmers to get involved. The latest technology with mobile phones and fingerprints comes into play here.

Mobile phones and fingerprints? That sounds interesting. Can you elaborate?

All macadamia nut purchases and sales made by LIMBUA are digitally recorded using LIMBUA’s computer system. This provides excellent transparency for Kenyan farmers. These use their fingerprint to confirm their identity in the system and log into their account, where they can not only record inspections of their farms by organic consultants but also the number of kilograms of macadamia nuts they are selling to LIMBUA. Once the figures have been recorded, the farmers receive a text message indicating how much money they will receive per kilogram of their nuts. As soon as these nuts have been recorded at the LIMBUA factory using a barcode reader and the quantity has been confirmed, the money is credited to the relevant farmer’s mobile phone account. It really is brilliantly simple! And the whole process takes just a few hours.

You previously mentioned short channels between producers and consumers. But surely LIMBUA has to profit from the sale of the nuts as an intermediary, meaning that the farmers earn less?

LIMBUA naturally has to cover its costs. However, all of the profits currently go into expanding the activities in Kenya to enable more farmers to earn a fair price for their products. The farmers are definitely benefiting from the initiative.

You mentioned that farmer training is also recorded in LIMBUA’s digital system. What kind of training?

The farmers have a wide array of organic farming training courses and consultant visits financed by LIMBUA. The visits and participation in the training courses are basic prerequisites for the conversion of the farmers’ land to certified organic farming. This enables them to vastly increase their earnings as organic produce achieves a higher sales value on the market.

Are farmers not tempted to mix in conventional nuts with the organic ones?

The risk of this is extremely low. When the macadamia trees are in blossom, LIMBUA employees estimate the expected crop yield. If a farmer delivers more nuts than expected, he will only be paid once he has explained where the additional nuts came from. The nuts are also naturally subjected to residue analyses, for example to check for pesticides.

How many people currently benefit from selling nuts via LIMBUA?

In Kenya, 5,000 farmers receive a regular income from selling macadamia nuts to LIMBUA. This naturally benefits their families, meaning that ultimately, over 25,000 people can enjoy a better life thanks to macadamia farming. Many school children in Germany also benefit.

Why does macadamia farming benefit German school children?

It does so on a completely different level. The school children I mean are those who work with macadamiafans and the WELT:KLASSE Foundation to sell the Kenyan macadamia nuts in Germany. Several of them get the opportunity to visit the smallholder farmers in Kenya and gain an extremely valuable experience in doing so. They obtain a clear picture of how the global value chain works and how our purchasing habits affect people’s living conditions in the source countries. If you take care to buy sustainably produced goods, you not only protect the environment but also help to support farming families. By establishing the LIMBUA Foundation, LIMBUA is following a similar concept to WELT:KLASSE in Kenya.

A Kenyan foundation that uses school children to sell macadamia nuts?

Not quite. The objective is slightly different. The LIMBUA Foundation is a non-profit organisation that works with schools and universities in Kenya. It focusses on raising pupils’ and students’ awareness of environmental correlations. It provides lessons on organic farming and biodiversity in general schools and at universities, but also at the LIMBUA tree schools. The aim is to create extensive social commitment that will hopefully create mutual understanding between Kenya and Europe.

Do you simply buy the macadamia nuts from LIMBUA or support the project in other ways as well?

First and foremost, we buy the nuts. However, we also assist the company with marketing, for example. In this regard, we believe that it is important for LIMBUA to not only offer macadamia nuts but also other products as the smallholder farmers’ entire farms are organically certified and used to grow all sorts of products. In 2016, for example, we worked with LIMBUA to have an initial batch of avocados from smallholder farmers in Kenya processed to make oil. We are also naturally aware that companies in the expansion phase can often face major liquidity problems. We have therefore supported LIMBUA in relation to finance matters and pre-financed the harvest, for example. It is simply important to us that we develop a long-term partnership based on social and environmental responsibility. We know that our customers also value this.

A transparent supply chain for Kenyan macadamia nuts

When the macadamia trees are in blossom, the expected crop yield can be estimated. The volume of macadamia nuts supplied is compared with this estimate. If the volumes match, the farmer is paid based on a fingerprint login and a mobile phone account.

How do you know what’s really authentic natural and organic skin care?

screen-shot-2017-01-26-at-12-47-16-pm

Natural Organic Skin Care

The difference made transparent

What percentage of the ingredients in natural cosmetics are organic? What are the minimum standards and the maximum values?

Furthermore, how can you describe the high quality of a product other than through its material properties – its finely tuned composition, its more than biochemical effect?

We don’t think ‘natural enough’ is good enough for your skin. Only the very best, highest quality, natural and organic ingredients for long term results and healthy, radiant skin.

from www.natrue.org

Our entire skin care and make-up range is certified with the international quality seal for natural and organic skin care and make-up – NATRUE.

The NATRUE standard distinguishes between:

  1. Natural skin care and make-up
  2. Natural skin care and make-up with at least 70% organic ingredients
  3. Natural skin care and make-up with at least 95% organic ingredients

This makes it interesting as the term ‘natural skin care and make-up’ alone is neither legally protected nor defined on a binding basis. At www.natrue.org, you can find the certifications given to the individual Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Make-up products for complete consumer transparency.

Go to Brand Directory Dr. Hauschka and click on the product image below. For example when you check Rose Day Cream you’ll see it’s certified to Level 3 – Natural skin care with at least 95% organic (and/or biodynamic) ingredients.

Please note: We have a preference for biodynamic ingredients, these are classed as ‘organic’ ingredients for certification.

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 10.56.32 AM

Look for the NATRUE label for your consumer guarantee that products are genuinely natural and organic. NATRUE certifies the entire product formula, not just one or two ingredients in that formula. Furthermore the entire formula is completely audited from supplier to finished product once every two years. Wherever available, we procure our ingredients from biodynamic or controlled organic farming. If an organic version of a raw material is not yet available on the global market, we initiate organic cultivation partnership projects.

You can count on our products being free from synthetic chemical fragrances, dyes and preservatives, mineral oils, parabens, silicones and PEGs.

We do not, or ever have, or outsourced, any testing on animals, we test on happy to help out human volunteers.

There is more to quality than good raw materials

Our formulas depend on the high quality of the natural raw materials – but also on the care with which they were grown and processed. By using biodynamic agriculture, we actually put more into the soil than we take out. We believe biodynamically grown plants are the highest in vitality and it’s this vitality we wish to transform for your skin.

In Dr.Hauschka skin care and make-up, the ingredients come together to form complex compositions made up of more than just the sum of their components. Only when their ingredients interact and are supported by our unique rhythmic manufacturing procedure do our products take on their very special quality that enables them to stimulate your skin’s natural activity.

How to Master Contouring and Highlighting in Easy Steps

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-11-35-24-am

You’ll need: Your existing Dr. Hauschka Foundation plus Dr. Hauschka Foundation 05 nutmeg, Concealer 01 pale sandRouge Powder and Translucent Powder in loose or compact to set.

About Dr. Hauschka Foundation

If you want less coverage, more like a tinted moisturiser, then mix Foundation with your Dr. Hauschka moisturiser. For mid coverage then use one ‘coat’ and you’ll fine ‘dries’.  If you want more coverage just apply a second ‘coat’ of Foundation after the first coat ‘dries’.

TIP: A foundation blending brush is a must for a professional foundation ‘air brushed’ application.

When contouring and highlighting think – darker areas recede and lighter areas highlight

Step 1: Start with your face cleansed, toned and moisturised.

Step 2: Apply your usual Foundation all over, remembering to include eye area.

Step 3: Apply Foundation 05 with fingertip as shown in the brown areas in the above pic, then with a slightly damp beauty blender press, in a press and roll movement, into the base foundation to blend.

To find the correct place for the cheeks, feel with your finger for the hollow under the cheekbone.

Step 4: Apply Concealer 01 as shown in the white areas in the above pic and then press and roll into the base foundation with the other side of the beauty blender.

Step 5: Apply Translucent Translucent Powder with a fluffy Powder Brush to set.

Step 6: Smile and apply Rouge Powder with a Rouge Brush to the ‘apples’ of your cheeks and blend up and outwards. Our favourite at the moment is Rose Duo limited edition.

Step 7: Do eye make-up and lips

Step 8: Close eyes and mist your face with Toner, to set complete make-up and to leave a dewy finish.

Dr. Hauschka Eyeshadow Palette, limited edition Eye Definer Brush and Eyeshadow Blender Brush

My eyes tell the story of all the experiences I carry within me

Going through life with your eyes open, expressing your personality, enchanting others, the windows to the soul, it’s always all about the eyes.

Eyeshadow Palette has four satin matte tones which are flattering for all ages. Use on both your eyelids and brows to create a delicate look for daytime or make a dramatic entrance in the evening. You determine what kind of appearance you want to make each day. Explore the versatility of the four earthy tones, which highlight every eye colour and accentuate every look.

Offering both colour care

Protective silk, soothing black tea and valuable plant extracts of anthyllis and witch hazel pamper the sensitive skin around the eyes for radiantly beautiful eyes.

International Dr. Hauschka Make-up Artist, Karin Sattar, has created four different looks to fit every occasion using the Eyeshadow Palette.

NUDE LOOK
Discreetly flattering

This is a low key make-up that achieves its effect by kilful understatement with light opacity and smooth transitions. For the nude look, less is more.

How to achieve the look

  1. Apply shade 01 over the entire eyelid
  2. Emphasise three areas with shade 02: the lid crease, the upper lash line and the lower lash line
  3. The lashes remain natural and only a light layer of Mascara is applied

EVERYDAY LOOK
Whatever the day brings

This easy daytime make-up suits every woman and any occasion, work or in the weekend. Everyday elegance in just a few simple steps.

How to achieve the look

  1. Shade 01 on the whole eyelid.
  2. A little shade 02 on the crease and the upper and lower lash lines.
  3. Highlight the outer corner of the eye above and below with the darker shade 04.
  4. Apply a little shade 03 and spread it gently towards the inner corner of the eye.
  5. For more depth, apply Kajal Eyeliner Pencil 04 Soft Brown to the outer corner of the eye and blend.
  6. Apply Volume Mascara to emphasise your lashes.

SMOKY EYES
Sensual and expressive

Effectively applied smoky eyes give your look the right level of sensuality, while also creating an air of confidence.

How to achieve the look

  1. Prime the eyelid with shade 01.
  2. Apply shade 02 in the crease.
  3. Now draw upper and lower lid lines using the Kajal Eyeliner Pencil 05 Black, taking the upper lid line toward the brow.
  4. Then use the the Eye Definer Brush to apply shade 04 directly on top and also blend this outward from the lower lash line towards the corner of the eye.
  5. Then create a connection from the outer corner of the eye up to the eyebrows with shade 03.
  6. Apply several coats of Volume Mascara to the eyelashes.
  7. Finally, create glamorous accents with shade 01 directly below the eyebrows.

RED CARPET LOOK
Skilfully attract attention

There is always a special occasion, so here’s the make-up for your next big event! Highlight your eyes expressively and treat your lips to pure colour.

How to achieve the look

  1. Prime your eyelid with shade 01 and then use shade 02 to emphasise the crease and the lower and upper lash lines.
  2. Apply plenty of Kajal Eyeliner Pencil 05 Black, running past the corner of the eye out towards the brow. Use a small dot to mark the end of the lid line in advance. This makes a precise curve possible.
  3. Mist a little Facial Toner onto your Eye Definer Brush, now apply a little shade 04 to set the eyeliner pencil.
  4. In this look, a strong coating of Volume Mascara is applied to the upper lashes, while the lower lashes are only slightly highlighted.

TIPS

  1. If you are wearing dark eye make-up, reduce the amount of colour on your cheeks and lips. Use just a little Bronzing Powder and a delicate Lip Gloss.
  2. To lift the eye shape and make the eyes appear more open, begin applying shade 03 in the middle of your lower eyelid. From there, apply the shade in one stroke to the outer corner of the eye and along the lash line back to the middle.
  3. Simply use the darkest colour 04 anthracite to draw a line along the line of the eyelashes to give the impression of thicker eyelashes.
  4. Take a deep breath before applying the eyeliner so that you can hold your breath for a moment to draw a precise line.
  5. Highest quality brushes will always give you a professional and blended look. Check out our limited edition Eye Definer Brush and Eyeshadow Blender Brush.

YOUR EYEBROWS complete your look

Groomed eyebrows form the framework for the make-up that you have just created. They are important for a harmonious overall appearance. So take a moment to look in the mirror and see how your whole face looks more open.

To find the right shade use your hair colour as a guide. Generally your eyebrows should not be lighter than your hair colour, but rather a touch darker. Or if you prefer to go for a dramatic look you can use 2 shades darker shade to make eyebrows more thicker and prominent.

Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 9.12.32 am

How to find the right shape

  1. Hold a pen or pencil perpendicular to your nose, the starting point for both brows is on this straight line
  2. Use the pen to form a line from the tip of the nose through the iris. This point marks the highest point of your brow arch.
  3. Align the pen from the nostrils to the corner of the eye, this is the line where the brow should end.

Black Tea – Beautiful Eyes

Screen Shot 2016-04-07 at 12.10.35 PM

An interview with Marie Calas, Head of Skin Care Development at Dr. Hauschka

As Head of Skin Care Development, you work on many different formulations. Nurturing, nourishing plant extracts are always part of these. In the case of the Eyeshadows, you have opted for black tea. Why tea?

A cooled black teabag is a tried-and-tested home remedy for tired or irritated eyes. Tea contains tannins, which, when used in a compress, are refreshing and reduce puffiness. We want our make-up to have the same effect. However, instead of placing damp tea bags on our customer’s eyes, we integrate the plant’s nurturing properties into our formulations.

How do you transform tea into Eyeshadow?

It is actually a rather complicated process. First, we create an aqueous extract made from organic tea leaves and mix it with extracts of witch hazel and anthyllis. These nurturing plant extracts are common in our skin care products, but as liquids. To integrate them into a product that comes in powder form, the essences are sprayed onto a natural mineral and air dried. This gives us a fine powder that embodies the strengths of the three plants. This process, which gives structure to a liquid, ultimately transfers the same benefits as a cup of black tea: it gives us clarity and restores order.

When is colour added to a formulation?

The powdered extracts of tea, anthyllis and witch hazel come together with other ingredients such as silk powder and silica to form the basis of all our Eyeshadows. The colours are created by various minerals, such as iron oxide or mica. These pigments range from soft notes of rose and peach through an entire palette of earthy shades, to a vibrant lilac and dark anthracite.

Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 4.45.00 PM
Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist

How do you create a new Eyeshadow?

We developers let ourselves be inspired – ideally by nature itself. We look at the world around us as well as at our inner landscapes. You could say that it is an act of creative visualisation in colourful dialogue with everyday life. We try to translate this dialogue into skin care formulations. Once we have created initial product samples, we involve other colleagues from the Marketing and Skin Care Consultation departments, as well as our International Make-up Artist, Karim Sattar. Karim tests the new Eyeshadows on various skin tones and gives us specific suggestions for the final formulation: perhaps a little more mica, maybe a little less coverage, or possibly a stronger hint of red. It is important that the new shade not only has the perfect composition but can also be perfectly combined with other Dr. Hauschka products.

Screen Shot 2016-04-07 at 12.07.52 PM

Black Tea
This tea is not only popular as a stimulating drink, though; it is also a sought-after cosmetic ingredient.

Tea gardens cover the hillsides in southeast China like lush green carpets. Here, in Hunan Province, tea is cultivated and harvested for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. This peninsula is home to the organic Qingshan tea farm, which is renowned for a classic black tea with a mild flavour and a reddish-brown colour in the cup. This tea is not only popular as a stimulating drink, though; it is also a sought-after cosmetic ingredient. The dried tea leaves contain caffeine and valuable tannins with soothing, decongesting and toning properties. These properties are especially beneficial for the sensitive area around the eyes, which is why extracts of black tea enrich the entire Dr. Hauschka make-up range including Mascara, Eyeliners and Eyeshadows in all shades.

10 Eye Makeup Tips To Enhance Your Eyes From Our Expert

Your eyes dictate the shade

Tips from internationally renowned Dr. Hauschka makeup artist Karim Sattar

Before Dr. Hauschka makeup artist Karim Sattar picks up his brush, he looks deep into your eyes. “I determine the colour nuances of the iris and select Eyeshadows, Eyeliner and Mascara to match. In my line of work, ‘match’ means ‘correspond,’ not the same colour.

In the same way that I would not put a green picture in a green frame, I prefer to surround the eyes with complementary shades. It is this contrast that makes your eyes shine brighter.”

Tip 1. Choose Eyeshadows based on eye colour

Blue eyes love Eyeshadows with orange pigments: shades of gold, sand or brown. Green eyes look particularly beautiful when highlighted by red pigments: colours such as lilac or pink. Brown eyes are wonderfully uncomplicated: as brown contains all colours, all Eyeshadow colours match brilliantly.

Tip 2. Co-ordinate your Eyeshadows and your outfit

Skilfully applied eye make-up should correspond to a striking accessory rather than your clothing. For example, it should reflect the colour of a piece of jewellery, a handbag or pair of shoes.

Tip 3. Eyeshadows for people who wear glasses

Glasses on people who are near-sighted always make their eyes look slightly smaller. Bright, shimmering shades are therefore ideal as they widen the gaze. The cut of the lenses for far-sightedness makes the eyes look larger. If desired, this can be counteracted using matte, dark shades

Tip 4. Eyeshadows for drooping eyelids

Make-up can also be applied to drooping eyelids. However, the crease should be kept dark as darker areas stand out less. On the other hand, a lighter shade should be selected for the upper lid and inner corner of the eye. The eye make-up should also be rounded off by applying white Kajal to the inner rim of the bottom eyelid.

Tip 5. Use Eyeshadows to optimise proportions

If your eyes are positioned closely together, the illusion of a wider gap can be created by simply applying lighter shades to the inner corner of the eye and darker ones to the outer corner. If your eyes are further apart, apply the Eyeshadows the other way round: darker shades on the inner corner of the eye and lighter shades on the outer edges visually draw the eyes together.

Tip 6. Combine Eyeshadows and Eyeliner

For particularly intense, long-lasting colour, use a brush to dab a little Eyeliner onto your eyelid and smudge it in before applying a suitably coloured Eyeshadow to the lid as usual.

Tip 7. Use Eyeshadows instead of Eyeliner

Instead of using Eyeliner, the lower eyelid can be highlighted using an Eyeshadow. This creates soft lines and smooth transitions to the lower lashes.

Tip 8. For the perfect finish

Dr. Hauschka Eyeshadows come in two different textures: Eyeshadow Solos combine colour with silky shine, while the four shades in the Eyeshadow Palette are designed to be matte, making them also ideal for eyebrows.

And to reduce shimmer or to add shimmer

Tip 9. To reduce shimmer of Eyeshadows

Use a brush to lightly dab a little Translucent Face Powder Compact onto your eyelids over your make-up.

Tip 10. To add shimmer to matte Eyeshadows

For deep colours with a shimmering finish, first apply one of the shades from the Eyeshadow Palette (e.g. 04 anthracite). Next, use the same brush to apply a little Eyeshadow Solo (in this case 04 taupe) to give the look a bit more sparkle.
